  • Here is a link to a video I made showing how to make a cardboard box rod wrapping jig: • DIY: Make A Free/Inexp...
    This is a technique I came up with a couple of years ago. I'm sure I'm not the first one to come up with this idea but I haven't seen it before so I thought I would share it. It is pretty easy to get a guide foot in place and locked down for finishing up the wrap using this method and it makes covering the point of the guide foot an easy task.
    There may be some draw backs to this method...but for my rod building, this method will do an adequate job of securing a guide to a rod.
    Here is a link to my playlist of rod building videos I have made: Fishing Rod Building - DIY Rod Building Jigs - Rod Customizing: • Fishing Rod Building -...
    Let me know what you think and if you have any other methods you would like to share, please let me know!

    After watching your first video it’s the only way I wrap guides now. I’ve also wrapped guides as large as a 24-26 it’s all in the tension.

      That is true, the more thread tension the more weight it will hold 👍 Good point. I don't use a whole lot of tension while wrapping ordinarily so I still use tape or rubber bands for larger guides. I'll pin your comment to the top of the list so others may find it. That is good info for people to keep in mind.

      The Fishing Hobby, I lighten up after I move the eye into final position then finish off my wrap. Yeah to much tension makes the tag hard to pull through.

      That sounds like a good way to go!

    You need to do a video on how to shape a fly rod handle and build a drill lathe.

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby  4 года назад

      Good idea! I'll keep that in mind for a video sometime 👍
      I use a lathe, but a drill powered lathe is something most people can afford and may even already have the stuff to make one.

    That is what our friend on the A-T sight used to start his rods I forget his name he is from Mexico and I sent him a rod dryer when he was starting.

      I figured others must have came up with that before. I had never seen it but the internet is a big place and even just the AT site has thousands and thousands of posts. If you think of his name, let me know and I'll go look him up 👍

    I have a broken snake guide on my fly rod, the guide that's broke. Is right next to the joining end how would this be done

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby  3 года назад

      If it is a snake guide, you would just wrap it on like this video shows really. Doesn't matter so much where it is located unless they did something like a strengthening ferrule wrap that continues onto a guide foot. If that is the case, you probably should redo the ferrule wrap and locate the snake guide just far enough away from the ferrule wrap that there is a little space between the two. That would make it a lot less work to replace a possible future broken guide in that same spot if it happens again.

    question about thread, can i use coats and clark (walmart) thread?

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby  3 года назад

      I use Coats and Clark polyester machine embroidery thread all the time. There are a few things to be aware of that I cover in this video: ruclips.net/video/EuAdjqtSSJQ/видео.html
      Hope that helps!
