I found some metallic thread at the 99 cent store about 8 or 10 spools for a buck very flashy. Used for a chevron over abalone. I followed Anglers envy custom rods on youtube and did his chevron with black and dark blue on gold abalone to match my gold Shimano Reel to rod. I also use clarks and coats thread plus other threads from wallymart and other stores. Thanks for the tips you have been very very helpful with your videos.
All solid advice. Your table looks just like mine. The only item I didn't see was what I call a "bead picker ". It works in reverse. Squeeze to release. Really handy. I hold HOT guides with the it when heated with glue sticks. Thanks again! You're great!!!
Unfinished rod blank tip: For the past 25 years, I use a quality Sterndrive/Outboard Clear Coat finish for blanks. Moeller brand. It not only has UV inhibitors, its also has "plasticisers" for flexing. I hit the fresh blank with a quick 00 Steel Wool roughing, 2 thin coats of Moeller, light pass with 0000 steel wool and a final coat of Moeller Clear. Iso Alcohol wipe between coats. Can also be used after wrapping if you tape up the rod guides.
@@TheFishingHobby Yeah man, please do. Im 49 years old and have been rod building since I was a kid working on head boats in SoCal. Im also retired Coast Guard. In the CG, we used to use Devoe UV Spar Clear Coat for everything concerning outboard protection. Devoe lost the GSA contract in the late 90's and we were handed Moeller paints and sealants and they're great. We'd put their CC on everything from metal to fiberglass to plastic. Ive done 100's of rods with it. No complaints. Cheers. Edit: its self leveling if its not boogered on.
That's actually great information. I bet a lot of people don't even think of alternate materials that aren't specifically made for rod building. These are easy to find and work just as well!👍💯
May not be, but next time you have a guide break you could try to wrap a new one on and see how it goes. You can tell pretty quick if it is interesting enough to you to keep going with it 👍
Is not as hard as it looks. I started about fifteen years ago due to breaking an eye off a shark rod. I was fearful that is wouldn't hold but after five seasons of rod bending action it held just fine. I have built over 100 since then. All the rods I currently use I've either built from scratch or remodeled and redone. Give it a try you may like it as I do
Thanks! You could do that. Water based spar urethane makes a good color preserver and epoxy sticks to it too. There are oil based spar urethanes that I wouldn't use under epoxy but they can be used instead of epoxy. They darken threads quite a bit and tend to yellow over time, but a lot of bamboo rod builders prefer oil based spar urethane instead of epoxy. I have used oil based spar as a thread finish and it is easy to work with but takes a long time (weeks) to fully cure and stop off gassing. Water based spar urethane doesn't work well as a finish coat but works great as a color preserver followed by epoxy. Hope that helps you out.

You just saved me a whole lot frustration, I'm new and having trouble with my guides. That running a heated guidefoot on the clue is brilliant

I can generally get 5-7 rod blanks finished with one can, depending on rod lengths. Can is $19 on Amazon.
Very interesting! I will have to look into that one, thanks 👍

Excellent tips to keep in mind. Thank you so much for sharing my friend.
Once again, your showing us that you don't have to buy the Emperor's rod building materials. Thanks again!
nice video I did not know about the coffee filters I use everything ells. I use the little plastic shot glass from the Doller Tree as well.
I know those little plastic cups! Great tip 👍
Super interesting
Thanks!
Bunch of awesome tip and locally sourced items brother, great job. I'm not crafty so rod building may not be my cup of tea lol.

Love your tips!!! Could you use the spar urethane as a coat for underwraps and then use regular epoxy over the final wrap?

That is cool! My kids are really into bowling (I noticed bowling in your name).
VooDoo rods is a good supplier, Donart Rods and Mud Hole. Most of them are good suppliers. Utmost is good for Blanks.
Hadn't looked at Utmost, thanks!
