      Hi there, Sweetheart Gaming! With enough consistency and some good timing (mentioned in the video), your pup can quickly learn that hearing their name is a really valuable thing! The key is to be consistent though. So try not to use his name unless you're working on training it. You can use less formal words, "here pup" or "pup pup" until he starts to have a reliable response to the name that you give him! Happy Training! ~Ken

    Go to him and tell his name(in this case his name is Jambo)
    " Jambo. " and give him a treat. DO NOT give the treat to other person or eat it, then he will know " Jambo " is a direct word for something tasty and good.
    repeat repeat and repeat, after a time go without a treat and say " Jambo " he will look at you. Mission succeded

      The great part is you can use a few😉 All of our own dogs have their normal names, and every one has at least 2 short-form variations. Through repetition and consistency they can respond to all of them. For example, our Toy Poodle, Hippy Shake is called “Shakey”, “Shaker”, “Shakin’ Bacon” and “Tiny Terror” and she responds to all of them! 😆 I’m sure you’ll come up with the perfect name soon. I have found that whatever the name you end up with is, you’ll feel like it’s the perfect name in a very short amount of time! Have fun with the process. Happy Training! ~Ken

    • @McCannDogs
      @McCannDogs  5 лет назад +7

      Hi there, Marty! It's important to train this exercise, without testing it. So you can work on getting that 100% reliable response to name, whether your pup is in a distracting environment or not. I would use something informal like "here" or another word, if you aren't sure what kind of response you'll get. By doing this, you can work on building successful repetitions by using the methods in this video! Hope this helps! ~Ken

    Quick question, how long should each step take? Should I slowly stretch it out and do maybe one step a day, or should i do the entire cycle in one day and repeat the cycle everyday?

    • @McCannDogs
      @McCannDogs  4 года назад +7

      Such a good question, Roman! Your progressions have nothing to do with the amount of time spent. It has everything to do with your puppy’s level of understanding. Once you feel like your puppy is “getting it” consistently, then move to the next progression. Some puppies may take a couple of days with a couple of sessions per day. Others may take a week with the same amount of daily training. It’s all about your puppy! Happy Training ~Ken

    • @roman-270
      @roman-270 4 года назад

      McCann Dog Training Thanks for the quick response! Another question, is it better if I focus on one thing to train at a time, or should I mix training? (For example, first I spend 10 minutes teaching my puppy it’s name, then 10 minutes of potty training, etc)

    • @McCannDogs
      @McCannDogs  4 года назад +3

      Another good question, Roman! That's a good strategy. It will keep things fun and will keep your puppy motivated to learn. And that is the ultimate goal. Specifically, with potty training, that's something that will present natural training opportunities throughout the day. You'll always be working on potty training with your supervision, and good management and great information. Having a reasonable schedule for your puppy and following the best practices will help on the potty training front. I love the idea of "training opportunities. " I have tried to explain this to my family with less success than I like. I guess I am not good at training my people, I guess!

    How do you eventually differentiate name from recall? My dog gets so excited about his name that we no longer use it around him unless it’s for recall. He has excellent recall though but I’d love to devalue his name a little bit so that I can use it without him expecting something amazing from me each time. At the same time, I don’t want to devalue his recall.

      The way I trained the name was not as a recall (like in this video, where the dog is trained to come to you when you call their name). I trained it as the same as “look at me,” meaning give me your attention. Now when I say my dog’s name he looks at me, and I follow with any other command necessary.

    Hi I’m trying to teach my 8 month old golden retriever all the basic commands his name, sit, stay etc but he is a super energetic dog and is constantly excited. Every time I try bring him out for walks he pulls and jumps on lead. He doesn’t bite the lead but he’s getting big and I’m getting tired of tugging back and forth with him. And when he sees other people he immediately wants to meet them and jump on them and then proceeds to run around crazily. I really need help, I feel like I’m going no where

    What if i got two puppies on my side?
    We have three beagles, one owned by my cousin and two for us.
    So its a bit harder than usual because when I use these they both try to snatch the treat.

      commenting incase anyone else needs this.
      Train them one at a time, pick a room like the living room or a bedroom and shut yourself & one pup in there to train 1on1. I'd also advise switching up which room you use so they know that the command isn't just for that specific room :)

    What do you recommend if your puppy doesn’t respond to kibble? She’s 8.5 weeks old and the kibble doesn’t incentivise her. Our breeder warned us about using chicken as a reward in case she gets picky and also against treats at this age? Any suggestions?

    • @McCannDogs
      @McCannDogs  4 года назад +2

      Hi there, Lesley! Make sure you’re using his kibble at meal times to make the most of his food drive at that point. You can always do tiny training sessions for his meals! Here’s a video that talks about some of the simple training exercises you can do with your young puppy: ruclips.net/video/JfQt4AsPl8g/видео.html

      McCann Dog Training Thanks Ken! I now have the opposite problem where she’s SO interested in food, climbing over me to get it. Do I need eye contact at the first stage of saying name then giving reward? She’s focussed so much on my hand and jumping up trying to get it that it seems like she’s not interesting and I don’t want her name to become white noise. Love all your videos.

    Do I use normal dog food for training? Or is there something else that's better?

    • @McCannDogs
      @McCannDogs  5 лет назад +1

      Hi there, Nelson! For this exercise, I would use something that your puppy really loves. If they have a favorite treat then I would use something like that to really get them excited about responding to their name! Happy Training ~Ken

    When their name is associated with a treat can we switch to giving them pets and toys as positive reinforcement as well? At some point you would like to stop rewarding in dog treats, right?
