better to just insert a knife behind the head, if you interrupt the spine and cut downward, both blood flow and all vital functions through the spine get completely interrupted.. much more humane than almost any method, instant, and bleeds the fish as well.. best way of preserving meat.. get that fish on ice and you will be happy...

Growing up back in Rhode Island it was possible for two guys on a small boat to land 400 pounds an hour late March early April. I've seen the schools 20 feet thick under the boat. But here in Virginia... they're so few and far in between it's not even worth looking for them. One of the best baits out there and fine table fare fresh, smoked or canned. Thanks for the vid. You took me back for a little while.

Macks are a great gamefish in their own right. They hang around the West End of the Cape Cod Canal most summers until late fall and are prime bait for large striped bass. When the bass are sated, and fishing for them gets tough, macks will take a streamer on a fly rod or a slender spoon like lure on fixed spool. They fight harder than most inland trout. The late great Frank Woolner wrote about this angling, freshwater tackle in saltwater is a delight!

We actually do the exact same thing here on the west coast of the United States. Here in southern California we have such an abundance of Pacific chub mackerel that we can catch them off of the pier day and night from spring to fall. In the winter I think they head south to warmer waters. Though don't quote that. I have heard conflicting information on that subject without any confirmation either way.

Feathering for mackerel is about the same from shore as from a boat, except you are more likely to get snagged up and lose all your gear if you use a heavy lead from the rocks.Should be easier from a beach, but keep your fishing weight lighter than normal as most of the Mackerel will be running near the surface.

For me, mackerel are EXTREMELY easy to catch. All I need to do is chum the water with mackerel carcasses (the guts, heads, and spines), put a little piece of a mackerel fillet on a size 1 J-hook, drop it in the water, and my dad and I will be catching them like nobody's business! However, it might work differently for other people.

Hi Graham love your videos, I have at the ripe old age of 81 have been persuaded to buy a boat with my Grandson and Son in law. I grew up in Portsea and used to go out with the lobster fishermen, on the way out they used to drag a heavy weight and a string of feathers off the stern, ( no fast boats then, just chuggers) and invariably we would catch mackerel. Now how do you know where to stop on the way to your fishing spot and fish for mackerel for bait.

The cheapest and best tackel to fish mackrel. Just use BLACK hooks. All You need. Make youre own. Take a trash bag over your fish Box. And make a smal Hole in the bag. When You Get a fish. Put them down the Hole. Then You dont Get any blod in the boat if they are kicking Around With the tail.

Hi Graham, First of all Thanks a bundle for all your very entertaining video’s not to mention the information included! Thanks.
Well thats the grovelling done now the question’s.Of a similar age as yourself but never having gone sea fishing can you guide me through the novices starting point. I can work out I will need some gear but what? My match, freshwater gear I can see is a bit on the light side!
I am not completely on my own having a friend to go with, who is quite proficient and has some experience. I watched your video when you visited Tony’s tackle in Eastbourne and that gave a number of clues on starting. What I am asking is where to start. Hope you can help. Thanks again Bob.S. I've caught 2 mackerel
