Since I started my modern city in 2021, I’ve really liked it. At least the downtown is cramped, but thats how it’s meant to be. I have one thing though. I have never used actual roads in my city. Instead, I unknowingly went with walking paths made up of stone bricks; and you know what, I like it. It’s relatively small, and they work perfectly. I’m constantly redoing things until I like it, and I believe my city has a long and storied history both behind it and ahead of it.
That’s really cool! A lot of cities have whole blocks with walkable paths, with roads in between for traveling longer distances. If you like it then keep it coming!
Cities with history behind it makes it so much more fun to build. My first city had history where I started building it on a cruise ship, and even though I am taking a break from that city to make a better one, it is really cool to think about.
4:04 I agree nobody wants to live next to factories or places like that but if you want the true American spirit sometimes a highway or two doesn't hurt and adds a touch of realism if you feel me
True. Sometimes it can’t be avoided. It’s more of a general rule for building “nicer” cities. Still though, a lot of Lower income housing don’t have a choice and get built in shitty areas anyway
I started building a city on super flat. I didn’t build an upper layer, so I’ll just have to gradually increase the ground level as I go. I’ve specifically started with structures that don’t typically have basements. Or I could do the task of using world edit to shift everything up 🤔
Tips for anyone on console - if you owned the old legacy edition and can still go onto it, you can make a flat world thats as deep as a regular one and has ponds, trees, and grass details then convert to bedrock edition. My 6 year old city world on bedrock edition was made that way and it makes terra forming way easier.
When I started a creative world way back in like 2019-2020, it wasn’t meant to be a town or city or anything, just a place where I can build huge mansions. I wanted my first house near a village, but couldn’t find any, so I literally built my own in this lil valley next to a river. Yeah it sucks. But the funny thing is throughout the years I found 2 plains villages, one desert village, and a taiga village as well lol. I’m trying to expand the custom village over the river and make a better, bigger one. But I don’t trust myself to get carried away and start building things like modern apartment buildings right next to my quartz box homes. So idk what to do with my village
When creating a superflat world in Java, you can click "customize world", then "use presets", then choose "overworld" your superflat world will be 64 blocks deep
Spent my first 3 years of city building in survival, now I can't be bothered with anything other than building in minecraft since ive played starting in 2012. Now I go ape shit with creative, an auto clicker & a shitload of mods including a building wand. Terraforming is my passion and I yearn for the leveling of jungles to make my city grow. Cities are addicting
For building city’s. To make your city feel more real. Pick normal world. For a cartoony city you should pick flat world since cartoons tent to have flat surface. Either of them are good. But i like normal world better, but you can pick your self! Just remember to treat these world equally none of them are better than both of them literally building in both of these worlds are so long! But its okay i recommend taking credit of real life buildings but make it different i also recommend building citys with friends are relatives. To make your city faster!!!
Great tips thanks ! I'm currently building a New York inspired city over a huge swamp island that I've flattened and drained before. I hope it's gonna be great!
im gathering as much information as possible on making a world myself, as i would like a project to work on. i think this video would help me make a city. I dont think superflat is good because if you do need to make something bigger than what you have, it wont help since you ran out of space
ok i regret that i just realized the seed i picked is bad. Also in superflat does the bedrock stay the same coords as a reg world? and if so the world height is the same height has a reg world, right?
I'm glad you enjoyed! Which city is better is definitely a matter of opinion. Both cities use quite different styles. while everything in my city is a little bit oversized vs. the player, from what I've seen, many of your buildings are a little smaller. Which is a really cool style choice! Often many of my buildings turn out pretty plain/flat because of the scale and many of your builds don't have that problem. Really though, neither is better than the other because they are both very unique!
@@zombieplays9 I like the way how you said that. Your style is pretty unique when adding a downtown city with a beach. Mine is more located in the suburbs, because I’m from Illinois.
@@DJ_Gaming543 yeah I didn’t really have too much of a set climate for building and now some parts look weird. Probably most similar to east coast if I had to guess tho
Yeah, scale and size matters. Had a build ing in mine, was gonna be the tallest in my city by around 10 blocks (It’s a small city that started as me building a regular Minecraft village, so everything is built in that style) but the base was so wide that it looked super short.
Ello.! I’m currently building a city in Minecraft, and I’m not doing a flat world! I’m using the normal world, I found a really nice terrain area and I’m currently doing a nature type city, so allot of soft colours and green ❤
There is another tip on building a city in minecraft as well, that is how to get around? Cars or Trains (Subway)? I chose mine with a Railway, don't get me wrong, there are still roads, but the primary way to get around is by Subway
This is exactly why I want to build a city. It’s a lot more than planting any building you please wherever. I’m trying to keep it realistic to as how cities, and transit are built in real life. I just started playing MC in 2023. I’m playing in survival and my first phase is to create a large map. Both 3/4 and 4/4 map to get a feel of what’s around, and where to plant my buildings. Ie- I love modern luxury homes so I’m looking for great coastal views and private islands to build them. Since I’m on survival, I found a nice flat plains to create item farms, and also a normal wheat farm. Thanks for this video!
So imagine there is a man on stage in a white magician suit. In front of him is a rectangular glass case, with a wooden board separating it in half. On top of the board there is a thin piece of fabric, on top of the fabric are a few stacked wooden blocks. The man smiles, pulls out the fabric, and watches as the blocks don't move. After pulling out he does a dance and shouts: "COCOCOCOCOCOCOOCOCOCOCOCOCOCO!"
If you're on Java, the superflat limitations don't really apply since you can make customized superflat worlds on Java. It's not as intuitive as it was on Legacy Console since Legacy Console provided you with menus to select blocks and to adjust how many layers of a selected block you want, but in Java you have to write all of that into a text input field.
As someone who is currently building a minecraft city (For 3 Years Now), This video is soo relatable. when i started my city, i started debating with myself whether i use normal, superflat or a mod that generates realistic terrain, eventually i settled on superflat (which was my biggest mistake, i already made this mistake with a previous city being 3 blocks deep LOL), for now im experimenting on things like changing the generator of my world from superflat to normal (though im not sure if it will corrupt my world) or using world painter (And might corrupt my world as well). For scaling, that was one of the main problems i had as well, but not in terms of interiors, its the scaling of my islands, or building heights because i cant fully view my build on a low render distance before, leading me to believe its bigger than it actually is but i fixed them by adding height and width. i also prefer the 5 block roads but prefer 4 sometimes on a tight area. And lastly, the monument LOL, i remember having to move the statue of liberty style island sooo many times just because it was closer before to the actual city
@@morganisapro8k so if you just want to turn an already existing road into a motorway you could slowly make the road wider until you can add a line in between to split into 2 lanes I suppose. You can also split the middle line in 2 different directions to add a separator. Lmk if this helps, and feel free to Join the linked discord, cuz there’s people in there who are much better at making roads than me that could probably help
I knew a few of the tips because I played cities:skyline. In general, if you want to build a city in any game, I'd lean on the rules of skylines. So I also knew about which buildings are important (schools, hospital, police, fire department, crematorium etc.) because of it.
I personally started toward the outside right on the border between the suburbs and the city. That way if I got bored of one I could work on the other. Just remember that most of your city buildings should be pretty short towards the outside and get taller the further in you go
The only problem that you mentioned that I have in my city is the road thing. Each of my lanes for a two way two lane road is one block wide. My two lane roads are two blocks wide, and my one lane roads are four blocks wide. (Also my cars are three blocks wide)
I’ve wanted to do this so much and I’ve tried several times, but I’ve never managed to actually continue. This has always been a problem. I’ve never been able to commit to a project, even on non-Minecraft projects like making alternate history maps. I hate it.
A lot of people have this problem, including me. I just had to promise myself that this would be the last world, and instead of deleting the world, I would get rid of anything in the world I didn’t like. It feels really good when you start to get a big world, and eventually you don’t really want to start over
@@zombieplays9well I never delete the old world. I absolutely hate deleting history lol. But good news! I have started, I’ve only made a pink suburban house so far but I’ve used some of your tips like building several blocks above the ground in a super flat
I was building a city in Minecraft I built a four lane road as a main road I already built the gas station near the intersection I also built storage units/police station/diner/few houses I normally prefer roads that are 5 blocks so I can be able to fit vehicles I know how to build vehicles in Minecraft I already built cars/trucks/vans/semi truck/fire truck/police car/ambulance also at the intersection in Minecraft I built a car wreck I used redstone as blood I also used armor stands as people and dye leather armor as cloths I know how to use banners as mirrors for the bathrooms I know how to make road signs for the roads and highways and even interstate I was planning on building the neighborhood and also build a school in that area.
I am making a fictional city and this video was coincidentally in my recommendations, and this was very helpful. You see, I want to keep my city more realistic than my older projects. And with the building skills I have (by the way I’m 13 and I don’t know if most kids have building skills the way I do, or there are kids that actually build better than me) I should be able to complete my city successfully and maybe one day publish it to planet Minecraft.
1) superflat or regular 2) climate 3) districts and zoning 4) scale *no less than 3 block high ceilings 5) roads *no less than 4 wide lanes 6) dont delete world if you make a boo boo
I had lost my files for my old city (rip Birminghan) so I used a 1.18 worlds and boy it was a challenge so I found a way to make it easier use coordinates and just build over lower land and destroy higher land and if you want make small hills
I had a city on the server I'm on, it was called Winter Haven. Things happened and it was deleted. I was planning on rebuilding it even better, but the world reset happened, and now i idk if i want to anymore.... I think i just want to join someone else's city, build a house and lay low....
Thank you for the advice mate, I really appreciate it. Do you have any tips of how to improve my world? I'm currently making a London world at the moment, and the scenery feels quite empty. I don't even know what build designs should I even do, and even if I do attempt to look at Google maps for some references, the result turns out quite disgraceful. I want to improve my builds whenever it comes to apartments, houses & offices. Do you have any tips so I can improve building those?
You dont wanna do super flat. It would be better to make a world painter map with mountains, rivers. And have the water level at 30-40 so you can still build underground
For the super flat underground problem I have a Minecraft creative city and I build it at y level zero so I can build underground and not waste time breaking the blocks so all the roads are levelled, another reason to build in the sky is because this way you can mess around on the surface, maybe do something stupid like blowing stuff up ir build something like a map or something else so just build in the air,it saves time and means underground is possible
@@zombieplays9yeah but I really like building mines because I think it’s really fun and 20/30 blocks can’t make a proper mine, also for me I just feel that being at y 0 is satisfying, and skyscrapers still have 300 blocks o be built, for me I build underground all the time and usually build really deep, since my city is connected with metro tracks which are really deep IRL,it really depends on your style of building if you build 20-30 blocks high or higher so it just depends what kind of builder you are
The city is far from finished and that’s a huge project. Sometimes there are empty spaces waiting for builds first too. I work on different parts of my city depending on what I feel like at a given time, so sometimes some parts look a little worse
This may seem obvious for most but one thing I’ve learnt when starting a Minecraft city in a normal world, always look up a good seed on the internet or something, don’t hope for the best
I should’ve watched this 3 days ago, I already built 3 floor apartments, a city hall and a fire station and missed the opportunity to make a subway bc its a flat world
Why do people keep forgetting that superflats are fully customizable? The ground doesnt need to be 3 blocks deep. You can make the world as deep as you want, and you can customize block layers
Offices are actually industrial in nature. An example of that is game dev offices making a product which is what industry does commercial sells products. So therefore offices are not commercial they are industry.
I mean technically yes but when I say industrial I mean traditional factories, and I fit offices more into commercial because their buildings are more similar and have similar needs
True. It definitely all depends on the scaling and styling you are going for. At the end of the day there are an infinite number of ways to build a good city and there is really no right or wrong.
@@regentofregrets644 easiest way to transfer from city to suburb is to put a river between them tbh. You could also split them with a commercial district, as they are often placed in areas like that irl. Best way to transfer from suburb to country is by just slowly adding in more trees and spreading out the houses more and more. Get rid of sidewalks when you turn a street. Change the texture of terracotta with road lines and get letters addon. This will help roads look more realistic, and use letters to name buildings and shops. This will make your city significantly better.
@@zombieplays9 That’s what I did years ago. I have a world with multiple cities and towns basically a country, took a long time to change all of them. but definitely worth it when you see the difference at the end.
Assuming it was on bedrock, after the caves and cliffs update they lowered the minimum height to -64, meaning you have a significant amount of space below you.
So i had a 2 year old city which i built on a creative server, The server was 1.12.2 but playin on it was so fun. i made so many friends aswell, but all good things come to a end and they decreased the world border size destorying 30% of the city, then i gave up
I started building a City without any idea how to properly build one 😆. My only plan is to add command blocks to make it functional lol. This actually help me, thankyou!
And also make sure to simply have fun. Bored of making realistic big streets and buildings? Build whatever you want! It is your minecraft city, don't make it feel like some big committee trying to make a profit made it.
Very true! You can creat some very unique cities by this rule. This video was more meant as a way for people who wanted to make a semi-realistic looking city to build a good foundation just using stuff that I learned, but really there is no right or wrong!
Hi crib here i have a question Is this open to the common discord members? because I'd love to participate and help with building and designing the city I've been told by many people in your discord that I'm a great builder and that's only in survival imagine what I can do in creative
Hey Crib! I usually let people join when im streaming in the city, but I rarely open it outside of that. If you catch a stream i'd be happy to let you build.
I need help. When I build a city I feel tired decided to delete the world and start over How do you overcome that? Like you don't want the feeling of starting over.
1. Think about how cool it is to have a giant city 2. Work on multiple different areas at once. I jump around all the time In my city. Some days I’m working on a house, sometimes a city building, sometimes an interior, and every once In a while I’m just making roads and terraforming! Have multiple tasks available to you at once and choose what you want to do on that given day. If you build something and decide it’s not good enough, just get rid of it. That’s rlly the best advice I can give
If you are a pc user you can custom design your own world on world pai nter and there's alot of tutorials on here on how use it but there's another app to where if you wanna build it on bedrock you can export any Java world to bedrock. Only or pc users
Tbh creativity does have no rules but when making a city its okay that you dont follow one of these rule not all Minecraft cities are perfect as long as your having fun, being into it and as long as it is a city.

That’s frickin awesome
For building city’s. To make your city feel more real. Pick normal world. For a cartoony city you should pick flat world since cartoons tent to have flat surface. Either of them are good. But i like normal world better, but you can pick your self! Just remember to treat these world equally none of them are better than both of them literally building in both of these worlds are so long! But its okay i recommend taking credit of real life buildings but make it different i also recommend building citys with friends are relatives. To make your city faster!!!
Superflat with custom terrain >>> imo but yes normal worlds are less work
Great tips thanks ! I'm currently building a New York inspired city over a huge swamp island that I've flattened and drained before. I hope it's gonna be great!
Sounds like a great idea! I wish you luck!
im gathering as much information as possible on making a world myself, as i would like a project to work on. i think this video would help me make a city. I dont think superflat is good because if you do need to make something bigger than what you have, it wont help since you ran out of space
For my superflat I am constantly building more and more terrain. The world is still infinite, but if ur good at terraforming imo it’s better
the best terraforming im good at is making huge dents in the ground lol
ok i regret that i just realized the seed i picked is bad. Also in superflat does the bedrock stay the same coords as a reg world? and if so the world height is the same height has a reg world, right?
Nice tips. I will definitely use these in my city to make them even better.
I don't want to cause any beef but which city is better, yours or mine?
Thanks for the tips man! Appreciate the help
Glad it helped! Best of luck!
Yeah, scale and size matters. Had a build ing in mine, was gonna be the tallest in my city by around 10 blocks (It’s a small city that started as me building a regular Minecraft village, so everything is built in that style) but the base was so wide that it looked super short.
scale and propotions can entirely change the feel of a build
Would you like to do an updated tour of our city world? I think it will help a lot of fokes with realism inspiration
I’ll take you up on that offer. Check ur DMs when you get a chance.
I created a flat city with my siblings 2 years ago and we still build, and even if its opposite of everything you said it has its vibe and i love ittt
Awesome! there's nothing wrong with doing something different from what I do, at the end of the day if you like it thats all that matters.
Ello.! I’m currently building a city in Minecraft, and I’m not doing a flat world! I’m using the normal world, I found a really nice terrain area and I’m currently doing a nature type city, so allot of soft colours and green ❤
Awesome to hear! I wish you the best of luck
@@zombieplays9 thank you, I did watch the vid, thanks for the tips!
how did you get the thing that shows your cordinates while in the chatbox?
It’s a creator option in settings I think? If you can’t find it I’ll log on to give you directions lol
There is another tip on building a city in minecraft as well, that is how to get around?
Cars or Trains (Subway)?
I chose mine with a Railway, don't get me wrong, there are still roads, but the primary way to get around is by Subway
True. That can make a huge difference for how your city feels
What about boats or flying machines that would be interesting
Thanks for the advice! Even though i dont play minecraft as often anymore i still use the advice for a roblox game im making.
That’s a really cool use for the video! I’m glad I could help.
just saying that this is the only city that i’ve made tyat is actually fun to make, i got examples from u and all other stufff, ty!❤
I’m glad ur enjoying the process!
Glad I could help. That sounds like a really cool project so I wish you luck!
After pulling out he does a dance and shouts:
"COCOCOCOCOCOCOOCOCOCOCOCOCOCO!"
Bro what is this 💀
If you're on Java, the superflat limitations don't really apply since you can make customized superflat worlds on Java. It's not as intuitive as it was on Legacy Console since Legacy Console provided you with menus to select blocks and to adjust how many layers of a selected block you want, but in Java you have to write all of that into a text input field.
Yeah I completely forgot about that when writing the script…
you can actually do this on bedrock, there are website you can use!
It’s pretty much just a collection of things I’ve learned by building my own lol. Glad I’m not the only one having these problems lmao
Making a city and started today, thanks for this video
Glad I could help I wish you luck!
Question: How can I smoothly turn a road into a motorway?
i want to make a motorway but i dint know how to smoothly turn it into one
@@morganisapro8k so if you just want to turn an already existing road into a motorway you could slowly make the road wider until you can add a line in between to split into 2 lanes I suppose. You can also split the middle line in 2 different directions to add a separator.
Lmk if this helps, and feel free to Join the linked discord, cuz there’s people in there who are much better at making roads than me that could probably help

Epic vidoe, thank you for the advice, i might use some on my own city that i have been building for almost 2 years now!
@@kremsnita446 awesome to hear!
I knew a few of the tips because I played cities:skyline. In general, if you want to build a city in any game, I'd lean on the rules of skylines. So I also knew about which buildings are important (schools, hospital, police, fire department, crematorium etc.) because of it.
Awesome! Hopefully there were still some things that you found helpful still.
Where should you start? Should you do the entrance of the city first or the middle of it?
I personally started toward the outside right on the border between the suburbs and the city. That way if I got bored of one I could work on the other. Just remember that most of your city buildings should be pretty short towards the outside and get taller the further in you go
0:55 This is only an issue in bedrock, in Java you can set how many blocks you want under the surface of a flat world
Yeah… bedrock is slackin…
in java you can change the superflat depth easily on the presets section, where it says "2*minecraft:dirt" just change the 2 to whatever number
Yeah true. I forgot this existed on Java lol. I pretty much play on bedrock exclusively
The only problem that you mentioned that I have in my city is the road thing. Each of my lanes for a two way two lane road is one block wide. My two lane roads are two blocks wide, and my one lane roads are four blocks wide. (Also my cars are three blocks wide)
Yeah… that’s pretty narrow imo. For backroads sometimes that’s fine, but for mains it’s a bit small…
@@zombieplays9 Yes they are very skinny 😂 but they make them iconic in a way and I can squeeze in more buildings too lol
@@johnlarson1683 true, it can definitely help create a more stylized look to your city and make it easily recognizable

Tip for superflat, click on the old minecraft version, premake a world with more layers of ground. Then load the world in the normal current version.

@@zombieplays9 I used it to make a map of the United States and Japan
I did not build my city on a super flat world, and the hardest part is clearing out the area, but with mods now you can do it way quicker
Yeah even with commands it’s pretty easy now.
That sounds really cool! You should join my discord and show off some of your favorite builds.
Well I wish you good luck then!
1) superflat or regular
2) climate
3) districts and zoning
4) scale *no less than 3 block high ceilings
5) roads *no less than 4 wide lanes
6) dont delete world if you make a boo boo
"A little bit more work" why not just avoid this all together and just make a world painter map
Im on bedrock so I always forget worldpainter exists lol. Good idea tho
I had lost my files for my old city (rip Birminghan) so I used a 1.18 worlds and boy it was a challenge so I found a way to make it easier use coordinates and just build over lower land and destroy higher land and if you want make small hills

@@zombieplays9 sure

That’s a funny coincidence 😂 I didn’t do that tho. Still not monetized
True, but most people don’t need 64 blocks under them, and the More space you have under you, the less space you have over you for skyscrapers
@@zombieplays9yeah but I really like building mines because I think it’s really fun and 20/30 blocks can’t make a proper mine, also for me I just feel that being at y 0 is satisfying, and skyscrapers still have 300 blocks o be built, for me I build underground all the time and usually build really deep, since my city is connected with metro tracks which are really deep IRL,it really depends on your style of building if you build 20-30 blocks high or higher so it just depends what kind of builder you are
@M1necraftb1nary yeah that’s a good point. Like ur thinking
Nice city and very nice buildings, but there is a huge absence of greenery, eventhough there is space for it
The city is far from finished and that’s a huge project.
True
I should’ve watched this 3 days ago, I already built 3 floor apartments, a city hall and a fire station and missed the opportunity to make a subway bc its a flat world
Well I mean you could always move them with structure blocks
Tip: You could build your cities 10-20 blocks up but if you are on java there is a setting that can allow you to add blocks to the generation
Yeah I always forget that’s a think cuz I play bedrock
Why do people keep forgetting that superflats are fully customizable? The ground doesnt need to be 3 blocks deep. You can make the world as deep as you want, and you can customize block layers
Why do people keep forgetting bedrock exists and that’s only a Java feature 😭
3:03 “The lion- *ĦŒØÜĞĦJ*”

I'm curious, when you build cities or towns, do you just build the structure or do you put rooms, appliances, decor, etc.? Thanks.

Offices are actually industrial in nature. An example of that is game dev offices making a product which is what industry does commercial sells products. So therefore offices are not commercial they are industry.
I mean technically yes but when I say industrial I mean traditional factories, and I fit offices more into commercial because their buildings are more similar and have similar needs
random aside 3 wide lanes is fine if you're going for a more Japense stylied city / freeway 4/5 feels very american to me lol
True. It definitely all depends on the scaling and styling you are going for. At the end of the day there are an infinite number of ways to build a good city and there is really no right or wrong.
How would you transfer from city to suburbs or countryside I'm struggling to do this
@@regentofregrets644 easiest way to transfer from city to suburb is to put a river between them tbh.
Definitely not a bad Idea. For me personally though, I think changing all of the lines in my world is not worth the time. Its just too big of a world😅

You can customize a Superflat world to have more depth than the standard 3 blocks, or use one of the various presets available.
That’s a Java only feature sadly…
If you are a pc user you can custom design your own world on world pai nter and there's alot of tutorials on here on how use it but there's another app to where if you wanna build it on bedrock you can export any Java world to bedrock. Only or pc users
True! Always forget about it. Somewhat difficult but pays off well!
On Java you can select the "single biome" world and select the plains biome for it so there's depth but it's not so hard to work on
That’s a great tip actually! I haven’t thought of that cuz I don’t play on Java but that’s smart.
@@zombieplays9 and for your roads, i would replace the concrete with its powder alternative. No asphalt road is this smooth
@nasenmann.offiziell rlly I meant to do that forever ago cuz it would be more realistic, but I like the darker color of the regular concrete too
