    How long after surgery should your Oranda start to swim properly? Just done the surgery a couple of hours ago on mine following your video. However he is still sitting on the bottom sometimes moving around bottom as usual but still not swimming around tank. This was my last resort as struggling with huge head and possible swim bladder as just hangs out in the bottom of tank never swims around any more been a month now

      This surgery will have no effect on a fish with swim bladder disorder. Actually, this procedure is nearly always useless. Even blinded by wen, most goldfish cope just fine and don't need the wen cut off. Their sense of smell and their use of the lateral line and other senses make it easily possible to find and compete for food even without sight. I've had a few fish blinded by wen and they never lost weight, swam oddly, or had any trouble at all.

    I had one exactly same red oranda as you have, i lost him because of light gone when I'm not at home and he dies due to lack of oxygen. 😭

    oh dear..this Wen trimming is not for the faint hearted ! Btw, how is your Beloved Oranda doing now? Hope it is well. Thanx for your good video demo.

    Why would you want to encourage wen growth unless you WANT blinded fish? Wen growth is mostly genetic. I never feed to encourage it. Some of my fish grow larger wens, some don't grow much of any.
    There are several fish in her background swimming all weird and floating around. Swim bladder disorder results from overfeeding (major cause), too much water depth, poor genetics, etc.
    We don't slam our fish with animal protein. They need plenty of natural veggie matter. Their diet would consist more of veggie matter in the wild.

    How do you know that this isn't very painful for the fish? And also what is the purpose of breeding these fish? Is it only for aesthetic reasons? I don't see how this is not animal cruelty ? They have issue swimming and also you have to do this stressful surgery everytime the wen blinds the fish. Just seems very unnatural. I don't understand how people support breeding these fish. So would be interesting to know why.

    • @CanineGrowTime
      @CanineGrowTime 2 года назад

      Again this procedure is generally useless. The fish can find food and swim even completely blinded. I've had several that thrived despite being blinded by their wens. Many think that this procedure will help a fish that is swimming oddly. Truth is - it usually won't. Overgrowing/overfeeding these fish will lead to swim bladder issues oftentimes... which cannot usually be resolved once they set in. As for why people breed them, much like Pugs... it's because people like them. Simple.

    I'm so glad I found this. One of my goldfish is living up side down because her wen grew too big...and it's still growing. I was looking for information everywhere but I couldn't get it, before your video. I'm not sure I can make it or not but it was really helpful. I wish I could.

    best answer is dont buy any fancy goldfish instead buy a common goldfish

    • @denisepollitt1021
      @denisepollitt1021 7 лет назад +1

      Atheist Sam Paul . I agree with this to some extent my friend. Only problem is, common's grow huge! I don't believe they should ever be kept in an aquarium.
      However fancy goldfish (as I'm sure you know) only grow 8" or so. I keep fantails, the least "mutated' fancy imo.
      Even though they're nothing special, I think they're are beautiful, they stay small enough for a big aquarium and best of all, they don't suffer from all the hideous modifications we've made to many other fish. The worst examples being bubble eye and celestial! Those poor fish break my heart.

    • @edstar83
      @edstar83 6 лет назад +1

      If people stopped buying them, they wouldn't breed them any more and there would be less variety of fish. Not the best answer.
      The only fancy goldfish that I'm not a fan of is the bubble eye. It just seems kinda cruel to breed them.

    How many gph should a filter pump to be adequate for a 75 gallon Goldie tank?

    • @luarosie
      @luarosie 8 лет назад

      750 gph. tank size times 10.

    • @jamiecolburn3276
      @jamiecolburn3276 8 лет назад

      +L Thrailkill I thought it was 5 times the tank size with canister filters and 10 times the tank size with hob filters?

    • @luarosie
      @luarosie 8 лет назад

      I think a sump filter is x10. but I'm really not sure. I know there are tons of videos on youtube about filtration and tank sizes and stuff.

    • @luarosie
      @luarosie 8 лет назад

      at least x10 was supposed to be a 'better safe then sorry' kind of measure. and it cuts back on water changes.

    I'm considering doing this for my fancy goldfish that has uneven tail. The size difference in his tail makes him swim weird and his body is slowly bending to one side. have anyone ever done this to a goldfish??? did they feel pain in their tail? Will their tail regrow evenly afterwards? really wanna know... X(

    I have a problem in that, initially, you said you would only do this operation if it was life threatening. Your fish had breathing problems because the wen was covering the gills, so you decided to do the procedure. My problem is that you started cutting away from his eye, before you did his gills. BLS (Basic Life Skills = ABC = Airway (Gills), Breathing (Gills) , Circulation..... I think eyesight comes way down the line. Wouldn't you uncover the gills in the first instance, in case something went wrong with anaesthetic and you had to abandon the op?

    yes, flapping bec of pain. othrwise why woul flapping be accompanied by scissoring? cause & effect .....pay attention to fish behavior.
