The toughest pop top truck camper ever made by Overland Explorer : Overland Expo 2018

  • The guys at Overland Explorer in Red Deer Alberta Canada make some of the toughest overland campers ever made. If you watch my previous videos of their TDK off road tear drop camper then you will know what I am talking about.
    This year they showed off their new truck camper with a pop top roof. I am already a fan of pop top truck campers so it was awesome to see one from Overland Expedition.
    One of the most impressive parts of the camper was that the soft material of the pop top was actually R4 rated insulated. For comparison, the front door of your house is probably R4 rated. That's impressive!
    Another impressive feature was that the roof itself is so strong it can hold 200 pounds with the roof up!!! The braces are built like tanks and they can be built even stronger if requested.

    I like some of the construction details, but a bare bones unit starting at $25K is going to have a tough time competing with better-equipped and lower-priced units from Four Wheel Campers and BundutecUSA.

    love the durability, toughness, and especially the simple but stout lift system. but for 25k i would expect a wet bath for the full size unit. it looks like it has room if u shift the sink toward the cabover bed, or half the bench seat.

    This is the perfect camper for a 1/2 ton 6.5 bed truck. I love the fact that it's a little undersized so you can close your tailgate which allows you to keep your factory backup camera and adds some security when it's not in use as well. I'd like to see more modern technology like solar, lithium battery and a small inveter, but that stuff can be added. Honestly, $25k is a decent price for something built this tough.

      G Henrickson that's the cool thing about overlanding. You can put a nylon truck bed tent from Napier for $200 or you can use a rooftop tent, or use a pop up camper, or use a tear drop trailer, or use a cargo trailer with a rooftop tent, or you can use a 4x4 van, or a surplus military truck converted into an expedition vehicle or urban adventure dual sport bike and tent and so on and so forth. The options are endless. Some options are affordable for every man....others take lots of money.

    very nice unit indeed, @15:32 the metal eyelet on the trailer looks like it would snap easily. i know my 3500 would put some stress on it for sure. for $25,000 USD I could get a palamino soft or hard shell camper, maybe even a adventurer or lance. but this unit would be great for back woods fishing in northern ontario on the logging roads. interested if they would come down in price eventually.

      Show me a camper for 2k that won't fall apart when taking it down a washboard road, Also Im not sure if you've been in the market for a bed camper that would fit a tacoma, but the lowest I've been able to find is around 6k for a older model, shell only. even then they sell way to quick that unless you jump on it the second its posted you'll lose out. Ask me how I know.. keep in mind similar builds sell for this price from Four Wheel Campers, as well as Phoenix Pop up campers.. Its just what the market will bring.

    • @mixflip

      chicovonchico I would request huge polycarbonate dual pane windows upon making my order. They will work with you. The owner probably asked for those specifically for some reason. The owner also swapped the location of the roof access and vent fan. His money....his choice.

    hey mr. mixflip, i have a question for you....i have a 2013 access cab tacoma with a snug top camper shell on it, and i want to install a rooftop tent on it, the guy at a local pick up trick out your truck place said i can't because the rtt would be too heavy for the camper shell, by the time you add people and all that goes into the rtt....you have any ideas? thank you!

    • @mixflip
      @mixflip  5 лет назад +1

      Sadly he is correct. A traditional fiberglass camper shell cannot hold a 200lb tent plus people. It will crack. You need a bed rack which is simply a bar braced system specifically designed to hold up a tent and people. You might be able to mount it to your roof area but you will need to buy a cross bar rack system to mount the tent to.

    • @107jester

      Roof rack like a construction rack mounts on your truckbed and will ride above your snugtop i have the same setup for a roof top tent on my dodge.

      I'm glad someone else realizes how stupid campers are without a Wet-Bath or Dry-Bath because it defeats the reason the camper was designed. Get a damned tent, cot and air matress. Or better yet for those "Adventurous" who probably havent' actually off-road with a camper (It's not a picnic) get a damned Truck Shell and put a matress in the back because that's all this damned this is for 25k.

      chicovonchico tough campers cost a lot. Look at the price of the legendary Alaskan campers...$30,000+. It's possible to go cheaper and cut corners sure...the trade off is longevity. Off road campers get beat to hell on wash board roads, bounced off rocks and boulders and fallen trees on non-maintained mountain roads. Many campers cant survive the level of shaking, vibration and impacts that off road campers are subjected to. If you camp at a KOA RV facility then this isn't the camper for you. It's not for everybody. I love it but it's not for me since I don't own a 4x4 truck. I have a Hyundai Tucson 2wd lol but that day is coming to an end soon.

      @miked7061 5 лет назад +1

      You have to consider all the costs associated with it from materials, labor, engineering, research & development then turn a profit. It's a great product and wouldn't mind paying. I've learned that people who complain about the price of things usually don't understand the entire scope and value of the product. Go buy a tent then but don't bash his customers and business.

    • @thegan9143
      @thegan9143 5 лет назад +3

      @Mr Sunshines and you might be an idiot if you can't understand the difference between cost and valuation. What someone is willing to pay is some formula that includes input costs and quality but weights the perceived utility of the thing more. You can build the most expensive house using the most expensive material and labour and it might cost you $500k but if its no different functionally from a $200k house guess what its worth?

      Don Leamon users might want to remove the camper for better off-road capability or especially to service the truck in an unplanned breakdown, maybe someone wants to stay in camp for the day while the other explores. It’s one of the major selling points to having a slide in.

    • @donleamon8653
      @donleamon8653 6 лет назад

      Well, if you think you're going to be in an area that you want to take it off, then leave the jacks on. But for most guys (at least that I know well) that buy these types of pop's, they never leave the bed. And you get these TO take off-road. So you sure as shit don't want legs dangling down.
