I had the same thing happen in the Wind River Mountains in Wyoming. I woke up to some noise, flung the door open of my camper and found a grizzly bear on its hind legs, front paws on the hood of my brand new F350. He ended up putting big scratches from those massive claws in the hood! Come to find out, they like to lick the windshield because of the dead bugs. Congrats on the new outfit and enjoy making more memories!
WOW! That is a good reason to wash the front profile of the camper!! Don't want him coming up there to lick any bugs.
Awesome. You mind telling me where in the Winds? I spend a lot of time on the reservation side and have heard of some grizz sitings in the bull Creek drainage. Never seen one though. Be interested in the rough location.

Wow! NIce! I've been motorcycle camping for the last few decades with a 2 man tent, themal rest pad and a Jet Boil...this would be like a luxury hotel! Love it! Got me thinking now, the old bones would be happier!

I watched your video based on a share from a FB pop-up camper page. He commented how you had a bear scare the first night out in it. We have traveled out west to that area the past two summers from VA and love it. We roughed it in a topper for two summers, talked about it all the way home last year and invested in an older pristine slide-in pop up when we got home. We are shooting for a Sept. departure this year and hope to do this every year. We too love the lifestyle and as we move closer to full retirement plan to spend more and more time out there!

I'm glad you took off your shoes in the new camper. I would do the same after years of my Dad's upbringing but I digress. lol
I'm 51 and looking at a similar rig but with a F 250. At the end of the day, I'm single and have a job I enjoy but the routine is getting old. I love the West and 'someday' will move out there. But where? I'm tired of exploring through the computer screen waiting for retirement. I feel like there are many more opportunities that would present themselves vs sitting at home. Now I just need the balls to spend some savings and just do it. Glad I came across your channel today. Good timing for me.

If you’ve got nothing stopping you, there’s nothing stopping you. Good jobs abound if you are good at what you do, are in an industry that’s doing ok right now, you have a bit of cheddar saved up. It often amazes me how little I need to be happy. I once took a 13,000 mile, nine month Overland trip and it turned out that it didn’t really cost me more than about $1500 a month including everything... and that includes all of my living expenses, storage unit, insurance and everything else. I also once took a two week trip to Belize and had an extraordinary time and the entire trip including airfare only cost $850 for two weeks! The way I see it ( if you watch my channel you will learn this) my dad died at 56 years old-I’m going to be 51 this year just like you-If you really want something, there’s no better time than today to make it happen. Tomorrow you might not be so lucky to have that perspective. My friend Brian moved out west two years ago from Philly. He hadn’t really spent much time out here. At this very moment he is touring in a sprinter he just bought and is camping on Lake Tahoe. He said he will never go back to the East. Cheers, Kurt!

@@HateTheIRS Each to his own. Some people want to camp only in generic easy to access campgrounds. Some want to go and actually feel like they are away from everything. I prefer the latter.
@@deepsix1827 that’s why I will never take out loans. Unless it’s necessary, and I know for a fact I am able to pay it off.
If I take a 20k loan for a car, I’d want 20k in my bank account, so I 100% know I can pay it off.
Then why get a loan? To establish credit history, or if I am buying a house, I’d make sure I have 100k available, so if I lose my job, I’m still able to make the payments.
Glad you told me about Part 1, thoroughly enjoyed! Montana is an amazing place, glad you're finding out about her beauty. Housing prices have pretty much tripled here in the last decade, hope you can find a nice reasonable bit of land if you're called this direction. The land is good, people are good, pace is good, life is good. Looking forward to Part 3!

I’ve spent some summer months camping and backpacking in the greater Yellowstone area and have seen grizzlies and lots more calling cards such as trees shredded like a scratching post attacked with a gaffers hook 8-10’ up, or torn up ground in Glacier from a bear searching for bulbs or pocket gophers.
Grizzlies are amazing creatures and worthy of respect and caution due to their incredible physical capabilities.
Please be safe. I would never be without bear spray in a holster on my person especially after finding that my camp site got sniffed around like this .
I to would have explored around the area later in the day, but with spray and with extra vigilance and, depending on topography, some deliberate noise making so as not to surprise the “neighbors”.
I would likely have a can also in the camper and in the cab jic.
As I cruise towards retirement age, I’m looking forward to having a rig like yours, but I’m not sure what my comfort level would be say up in Alaska with the really big bears…when backpacking, I got used to setting up my kitchen well down wind of my tent and hanging my food, so i can’t help but cringe a bit when I see others cooking greasy food right under their fabric fold out roof tent as it seems like a recipe for getting a late night inspection that you do not want.
For me I might want a camper where I could access the cab from the camper in an emergency if I had to bug out or I might consider a vans immediate potential mobility a little less exposed to human or animal threats.
Also not totally sure of their efficacy, but I might stow an air horn in the camper as a potential deterrent to curious critters.
In my opinion a firearm, especially if it’s treated like the only defense, is more likely to provide a false sense of security when you are in true bear country,. Especially as it is pretty unlikely that most could put down a grizzly quick enough for it not to able to settle the score with you in a very ugly way. What’s most practical is being aware of how to minimize unexpected contact by modifying our own behavior.
The mantras I got from backpacking in grizzly country were don’t surprise a bear, never eat inside your tent and don’t wear smelly products.
With boondocking in fairly remote areas I’m not sure I’ve figured out my own comfort level of minimizing risk in a soft sided camper vs my experience the even more vulnerable position of being in a small tent…that said, there are certainly places with good reason that prohibit soft sided campers as a truly motivated bear could easily shred canvas or smash or pry open plastic window. But it’s not like the news is full of stories of deadly bear on camper attacks…just that on the rare occasion when the worst happens in the backcountry (if it wasn’t triggered by surprising a sow with cubs or a bear with a carcass) a lot of the time it turns out somebody ate in their tent…
Not being at the top of the food chain can be a character building experience lol

You can change the bulbs that came with the camper to softer light, this way it looks better with all those clunky lights hanging from the ceiling. LED lights use very little battery!

Enjoyed your video of part #1 of your loop through Montana, Wyoming, etc. Looking forward to watching the rest of the series. I am also interested in your pop up truck camper. I currently own a Ram 1500 Lariat, 4X4, crew cab, short bed that I take off road frequently. I also own a Crosssroads Cruiser fifth wheel camper that I love, but I would like to miove back into a more simple method of camping.
I started out tent camping, then moved into pop up camping trailer and truck camper, then moved up to a hard sided camper, then up to the fifth wheel.
Now, at (77) years old I want to move back to smaller, lighter, easier camping methods!
I currently live in central Oklahoma, but I was born in the east and have done most of my camping in the forests of WV, Ohio< MD, MI, and PA. Its just become too much preparation and expense to keep driving back to PA every year pulling (34) feet of fifth wheel camper!

Ads are interesting.... basically, I can control how many there are so I create "breaks" in my videos in production to place them. I generally only have maybe 2-3 ads for an hour video. However, after uploading a video, RUclips auto fills your video with ads that you then have to go back and delete out what you don't want. If I left all the ads in that RUclips suggests, an hour video would have about 20 plus add breaks. As a creator, we have to have ads. Otherwise, we get paid nothing for our work. And, I will share that ad revenue is marginal at best. Thanks!

Very nice. We almost bought one but ended up getting a custom made Phoenix Minimax popup with wetbath. Once you sleep with someone else on an east/west bed, but you quickly appreciate opening it up to north/south and not rollover your partner on a bathroom run in the middle of the night.

I've not really looked at them much to do a comparison. I've seen them though. Are they 100% composite and aluminum? You don't want a camper with wood and staples.
4XPEDITION Aluminum Exoskeleton. No wood or metal frames. You basically can screw in mounts anywhere on the shell and it holds. Only wood is the benches and kitchen. Propane heater and just as light as the on e you have.
I really was not crazy about a pop up for security and extreme temps.
I’m driving a 2019 Ram 1500 6’4” box. Probably will upgrade to 2021 if they go to Uconnect 5. I love to get the air shocks too this time. I think these both it will be a great setup.

Thats why i would be nervouse to have a tent in MT. Bears are all over the place. I realize some of it is hard shell but a grizzly thats stands 10 feet tall would not be fun to wake up to. Beautiful video and landscape. MT is such a great place. Safe travels!

It is a good life. I would say my 1500 wasn't really ideal for that sized camper. It was pushing the limit. I would go with a 2500 and a longer bed so the camper doesn't stick out the back.
WhT an awesome rig for overland travels. I have a Toyota FJ with a rooftop tent. I am widowed and now 75 years young. I am thinking of what to do to keep exploring and need to be off the ground, that setup could work for me. Does your ram truck carry the weight or did you need to add airbags? Same thing happened to me in my Four Wheel Camper. Felt the camper rocking, looked out the window and came nose to nose with a black bear. Come morning, I took photos of all the paw prints all over the side of my truck. That's the reason I never cook inside the camper. I live in BC Canada. Pretty everywhere I camp is black bear and grizzly territory.
Ya BC is bear country for sure. Coming from Arizona we have Black Bears but I have only seen two in the last 30 years of adventuring in the wilds of nature in that state. We have more Mountain Lions than anything but I have only seen one of those.
@@4XPEDITION I live in North Vancouver. The more "rugged" portion of Vancouver. Backcountry is a short run away. I have a black bear den in my neighbour's yard. Soooo....we see a lot of bears. lol

Welcome to Montana. Always have a weapon when camping up here and never store your food open and definitely not in the cab of your truck. 🙂
Where to keep the food? It's better in the popup camper than the cab?
You don’t need a handgun for the bears. That just get bears killed needlessly. Especially hand guns. You need a 357 magnum or better for revolvers and really a 44 or better for semi-automatics. Then you have to be incredibly accurate under very high stress situations. It’s not like on tv,,,,, not at all. There are very few who would actually successfully stop (kill) a bear on the run flat out and straight at them with a rifle, let alone a handgun. A shotgun with alternating double ott and slugs would be the absolute best. Carry bear spray. It really does work.
I have 58 years of living in the remote wilderness in the heart of grizzly and black bear country. I never exactly feared them, respected them, but not fear. Mountain lions on the other hand. If you are approached by one of them, they are only approaching you for one reason. It’s rare this happens, even more rare in the case of black bears and almost, not absolutely, almost unheard of by grizzly bears. Bears do have more encounters as they are not nearly as nocturnal as Cougars, and they are more numerous, frequent more areas that humans also frequent.
I owned about 8800 acres of land for Ranching. Of that, about 7500 acres was just natural land, most had been logged at least once in the 50s. My dad bought it after being logged and bought and bought as each plot came up. He was huge on letting it go back to natural and so we had a very diverse wildlife habitat. From prairies in the foothills to the side of a mountain as marginal pasture. I had dealt with bears, wolves, cougars, wolverines, badgers, anything with teeth. Rattlesnakes. Deer, elk, moose, it was all there. A great place to live!
You do not need a weapon beyond bear spray. I know.

@@Ninjahalfbreed1 - How so? People can carry what they want. I’m just quoting statistics. Where I live there is not the freedom to always walk around with a firearm. In Canada you cannot possess a firearm in a national or provincial park. Not even if you leave it in your vehicle,,, you are in violation of the law. No right to bear arms in Canada. So the best defence here is common sense and then bear spray if you can’t exercise common sense, or are incredibly unlucky.
Do you know how many people WOTH THEIR FIREARMS are seriously injured or killed with their firearms not even discharged?? Or they discharge every round in the magazine and the bear doesn’t have a scratch. I have been in the situation where I had to use my firearm as a defensive tool and I was lethal. I have nerves of steel. Others are not even close to controlling the adrenaline and marksman shooters in competition won’t hit the side of a barn. So it could be said that YOU are gonna get someone killed! Think about it seriously, you may not be correct yourself. It happens.
Cool Camper. I have one of the competitor campers - I like some of the things on this one. Specifically the area above the bed isn't hindered by the push stick that I have to use. And the windows, the windows in this are great. Aside from that pretty similar.
There is one huge difference. This one has no staples or wood in its architecture. All composite material and aluminum. What camper do you have?
I have Jeep gladiator with 23 zero roof top tent. I have a trail cam wifi that set up outside pointing to Jeep at night. I got several videos of Black Bears trying get in back of bed to the Domectic Fridge.
Did they wake you at all or just discovered on the footage the next day?
No same thing. Woke me up. I felt car moving, then heard a thump. Unzipped window look down he was looking up at me. Then walked away. Americian Black Bear. AKA ghost of the forest. They are so quiet. Amazing animals first time had camera on trail, that he did not use. Second night had it set at campsite, and got footage of him.

Wow! Imagine if you were in a tent with a huge bear sniffing around. YIKES!
Been there, done that... I had a huge bear trip over my tent guyline in the middle of the night. The next day a camper just down the trail had a bear raid his tent, steal his backpack and eat an entire package of PopTarts. (I never keep my food in my tent and opt for a bear canister far from my sleeping area).

Sounds like a great trip. That sunset makes the camper so worth it! Glad that bear wasn't too hungry! This last spring I built a little camping rig in the back of my RAM 1500; but nothing nearly as nice as your rig!

@@4XPEDITION was about 200 lbs maybe. Plywood and 2x4's, 2x3's, 2x2's. And the ARE canopy is 250 lbs. Short video on my channel.

Have it mounted on my old short bed GMC with the tailgate down. All things considered it's working out well. Planning my "escape" from NY State soon. Heading for Florida in October!

You need a trail cam. Costco has a decent one for about $100. You tie it to a tree facing your rig and it starts recording with movement.

I own a 2019 Rebel and Im thinking of getting a slide in like this. I just need to get an extended gas tank and the camper then im off!
Great series on the Camp X. Can you share more on the portable LED and mount? Brand, model etc.? Also as you have moved from a car to a slide in, perhaps a video on all the gear for the truck and slide in as a buyers guide for the new truck camper owner?

As someone who lives in Wyoming where we have a lot of black bear and Grizzly, I was surprised to see you taking off hiking without bear spray at the minimum,, just after a bear visited your camp. I hope you will carry bear spray with you when in bear country. Good luck and enjoy the mountains!

Lol. Welcome to the SLC valley. I live in Payson. At the very bottom of the long city. It sucks going north. That is a pretty cool set up.
Ouch. That is a horrible commute if you have to drive anywhere further north. But, where you live down there is sure nice.

I've been considering the overlanding/vanlife lifestyle for some time. Trying to decide on what rig. Searched 4x4 Ram camper and this came up. It seems a great option for getting into the back country. I'll search for your video explaining your decision to go this route instead of a sprinter conversion. I have the same idea of traveling the north and south west to find a piece of property to retire on.

I discovered Overland Explorer and was just so impressed with not only the components and building materials and quality but also the guys who own the company (Arnold and Mark) and their technical backgrounds I bought a Camp X Sight unseen. Yep! I bought it and drove 15 hours before I ever saw it in person. (Did a lot of research in advance and talked on the phone with OE as well as talked on Expedition Portal with a guy named Chad from Bozeman that had an unbelievably detailed build thread.) I really thought this episode came out right... good diversity. The next two episodes though... some amazing footage coming.

Thinking about the exact same setup...Ram Rebel with that style camper. Curious to hear how you feel the truck handles the weight? I'm a little worried about exceeding payload and the impact it has on handling, braking etc...? Thanks very much, love the video!
Handled it pretty well, to be honest. But, you should know that I sold off that entire setup earlier this year. Mostly because I sold it all for a great price and now I have a Powerwagon.
Wow did you pick a Great spot. All that green, the running clean water, the birds chirping away and snow capped mountains, all remind me of my home back east in New Hampshire, where we have the WHITE MOUNTAINS, LOL, just like Arizona does. Oh yea and the muddy roads, awesome.. Man I miss NH badly. I can't believe you sat there reading with the door wide open w a bear out there somewhere... At least if he nudges the closed door you could pull out bear spray or sidearm... Then again I was thinking maybe a Dad and child Sasquatch visited you this am. More likely them than a Bear, I would think the bear would have broken the window... How tall is your sleeping window about 8' off ground? That's about the dads shoulder height, with a back width of 50" ,, Can you imagine? He was probably watching you sleep and had his son shake the truck,, lol. It wouldn't be the first time.... LOL
I was just talking to my bud, Brian about the White Mountains. I would like to get over that way and explore more. I went on a long 13,000 mile trip over a 9-month period back in 2012 and roamed up in Vermont, Upstate NY and Quebec but missed New Hampshire. Would love to check out that state.
@@4XPEDITION Definitely you got to check out NH. If you got to White Mountains you will go onto the Kangamangus Highway, 34 miles long cuts through the W.M. at approx halfway point around 17 miles coming from either direction stop and there will be a beautiful place to sit in the Swift River , rock is all smooth will bring you downstream about 70 yards into a pool about 14 ' deep . you go right over the waterfalls into the pool. I been going since my parents brought us about 50 yrs ago then I brought my 3 Sons every summer Now my son's bring their kids (my grandkids) great native trout fishing swimming camping .. So many gorgeous places in White Mountains that the State maintains . caverns, rivers gorges that are safe to walk right through all setup safely.. Awesome new rig. Is this new co with the Camper slide in on the stock market? It seems everything you touch turns to gold.. Lol. I could live in that setup, it's perfect Jeff. Let me know if you go through NH. I'm heading back east soon I think, seeing how safe it is driving cross Country. Miss my kids too much. Be careful out there.
Much what I have planned as well. Funny how similar are stories are. I have a 35 acre farm in TN which I have thoughts of cabins Nd such.

Hey thanks Chris! I imagine you liked this one better than one of the previous video you commented on. ;-) Glad you are here. So, the ideal situation is summer in the green paradise and winter in the desert. This is my goal. 4XPEDITION to have two 'camps', one in the mountains and one in the desert. Since we only have this one life to live and I have only about 40-45 years to live it and up to my full potential, this is what drives my action. As you probably recall if you watch my videos, my pops died at 56!
Did you see bear tracks in the ground around your truck? I would think if a bear pawed your truck there would be scratches. My thought was mountain lion.
Honestly, the ground wasn't muddy around the truck so I didn't see any paw prints. You could be right, though.

They are beautiful units but 36k-44k is way out of most people’s ball park. You can have just as much fun for 20k less. But nice informative video.
Hi there Patrick! I think the cost is relative when you say "can have as much fun for". I don't disagree as you can spend $20k on a backpack trip around the world for an entire year or $20k and purchase a couple hundred massages at your favorite spa or what have you. You can get expedition trailers way less (Around the $10k-$20k range) and have a blast for way less...but you cannot really stand up inside them. Heck, you can get a decent RV for $30k. You can also get other slide-ins, but they are made of wood and stapled together. This is a true expedition slide in. 100% Composite and Aluminum. I think every tool has its purpose and the cost of it is defined by the market and buyers. There's definitely a market for them as Overland Explorer just completed the dealership deals with about 6 dealerships in the USA and almost all of them have preorders.

Nice camper. Did you add helper springs? At 1,200 pounds may not leave a lot of payload for a lot of 1/2 ton trucks. Nice to see 4 wheel campers get a little competition.
Couldn't agree more with you about FWC. I added rear AirLift bags inside the rear coils.

Good luck with your dreams , im.61 and been full time in my 25 foot travel trailer , I pull it with my 2020 Ram 1500 off road package . This camper life is great 👍 check out free boondocking at water management sites in Florida . You get reservations on line ahead of time .. they have them everywhere in Florida .

Seems Camp-X is so much more advance than FWCs, and better suited for the Northeast weather. What's the current weight of your camper as it sit on the truck, and can you sit up comfortably on the dinette when the top is down? Great video, thanks for sharing.
They definitely are more advanced. The camper weighs about 1300 dry if I recall. Yes you can sit up.
