Pop up hard side camper on a flatbed with side entry by Alaskan Campers

- If you are in the market for a pop up camper truck camper but you want the protection and comfort of a hard side camper vs a soft pop up camper...then you need to take a closer look at the pop up hard side truck campers from Alaskan Campers.
They have been making pop up truck campers with fold down hard walls for over 60 years. They were originally used by construction workers who had to build the Alaska Canada highway by day and sleep in the snow by night hundreds of miles away from any town.
Thats a seriously awesome history for a truck camper company. So you can have peace of mind that the folks at Alaskan Camper know what they are doing. What works and what doesn't work.
Yes their campers are pricey but if you look close you will see they are worth every penny if you find yourself camping in a snow storm.
Another big selling point is that the camper pop down giving the driver better gas mileage and better control since the center of gravity is lower. This probably pays off greatly when off road.
I have already told myself that I will own one of these someday! I just need to save up some cash lol.

It would be nice if the had a floor plan that included a wet bath and/or a shower in the dinette - like four wheel campers.
It would also be cool if they did a shell model so it could be had at a lower price point. The hard side pop up style is awesome!
I'm very impressed how they made use of all the space amazing :) I don't even like to travel and I want one
LOL thanks for watching.
I love these. But alot of money. I think a wet shower stall could be installed where current toilet is up to the ceiling and make the top portion sleeved inside lower portion and just compress and extend with roof. Drain the gray water into outside water bag and your good. And also retain the canister toilet. It would work. Maybe I should buy one and modify it. lol
Quality, meets style, meets worth the money. Buy nice or buy twice. 👍🏻🇺🇸
true words. Thanks for watching.
Truckcamper Magazine has said in a post that he has never received a complaint about Alaskencampers.
A beautiful truck camper.
Very good video.
Brian was more relaxed too.
Always a pleasure. Be safe.
They have a great track record for sure. Thanks for watching.
That flatbed is AWESOME! That's now on our dream build.
That's a neat build of an Alaskan camper, I have an late 80's one and we have "hammered" in it off road, sure It has some issues it's over 30 years old. will have to investigate this integrated water heater/heater featured, would be nice to see an install of a non rooftop AC, maybe a mini split in an AK camper. My AK camper is also installed on a flatbed though it is the truck bed style. put tool boxes where bed would sit.
The cassette toilets are the best invention for campers and small trailers. I wish more manufacturers would use them. When your an avid rugged outdoorsmen and trek to crazy places that system is the best.
It depends on your travel style, but I imagine most folks will use rest stop & public campground toilets or a dump station. 💩 management & proper emptying procedure are critical. You do NOT want to attempt dumping a full cassette all at once...unless it's a pit toilet.
The cassette toilet take up way too much room and the box its in is a waste of space you could put i the biggest porti potty and have a nice seat on top and you can still carry the tank in to empty out or dump
I always loved the look of Alaskan Campers.
Great idea since all the soft side pop up campers look dingy when raised. Problem is that Alaskan campers look dingy too.
Love these walk throughs!!
Hmmm. I like it! I’ve been looking at a Mercedes Sprinter 4x4, but can’t get over the cost. I also like an oldschool 7.3 diesel e350, but can’t get around having to convert it to 4x4. I could see getting a used diesel flat bed truck with 4x4 and adding one of these to the back. Nice tour!
I love the sailboat interior.
The “cool factor” of Alaskan Campers brings to mind Steinbec’s “Travels with Charlie.”
Nice! They need to make a north south sleeper model so you don't crawl over someone to get up.
LOVE the flatbed setup
Me too
Impressive products and a really great tour, thanks man!
This Alaskan plus xp camper lay out that will be perfect.
I have always always wanted an Alaskan camper. one without the cabover. mom needs a getaway alone. lol
I'm sold on that flatbed camper now I just need the truck
Awesome I wish! Was checking out flat bed campers and saw Mixflip and remembered your gun reviews!
Great impressive versatility... diggin the toilet.
geruner probably comes in handy when you are miles away from a real toilet.
I like how it is tucked away and swivels and easy to dispose. Even if someone were to be in bed you could not be seen. Very smart.
geruner, ya don't hafta dig a toilet, there is one onboard. HaHaaa! I understood ya, it was just a feeble attempt at humor. I dig it too! ........................PEACE!!
sshhhh dont look now buuuutt your military back....ground is showing.
The toilet is child sized. I believe an adult American male wouldn't fit into the cabinet. I'm 6'2", 256 lbs and at mid-70 yrs old, it's not for me. The builder has an excellent record and experience, so customized (side entrance on the driver's side, a bolted Lazee-boy, etc would be possible.
Flip: "Bryan 5 questions";
1)"Do Alaskan Campers utilize hydraulic linear actuators?"
2)"Can a 38 Special round chamber and fire in a .357 Magnum firearm & same for 44 Special/44 Magnum?"
3) Is Dolly Parton taller sleeping on her stomach than standing up?"
4) Did you know my wife accused me of being immature and I told her to get out of my Fort?"
5) Do you know you're a great guy and we all appreciate this walkthrough?
Bryan: " Yep,Yep,Yep,Yep,Yep"
😀🇺🇸👮
Good showing mixflip. I have a 24' RV. Too heavy to tow w/jeep. I have a Smittybuilt roof rack w/awning n RTT. All good for now. Yet, I'm looking for something I can stand up in. Kimbo builds a comparible one for a Toyota Tacoma. It's mostly made of aluminum. The one doing the video could have done better. If someone could build a camper thing combining the best of wee roll(aluminum shark cage frame = No rot or rust),kimbo truck camper thicker aluminum walls n partitions,n Alaskan camper craftsmanship (ex.;cassette toilet ect.) Also the Australian Icarr tear drop (aluminum inside n cabinets, ect.)A retired person wouldn't need a house,n be able to travel at will. And be able to stealth camp. Therefore I nominate you CEO of the company to be !!!
Love the concept of theese campers, but they are way out of my price range new. And on the east coast they are difficult to find.
So I ended up building my own. And yes, it has both an inside and outside shower.
😁
Let's see your home built model?
I'd like to see it as well.
The 'pots and pans storage' door should open on the other side for access from the kitchen.
they will do that for you. It is not 3 feet long though so no real issue.
Good stuff. Brad from TrailRecon, Jason from Jason K, and you all have a different perspective. Keep it up.
Thanks for watching.
Like it nice work hope they do larger size flat bed style
Hm, looks good!
I would get like a permanent shower because I like surfing everyday and need a warm shower after the ocean
you need one of these, so do I.
Their lightest one is maybe 1,300lbs. My personal weight budget for any camper shell is sub 300lbs, with even lighter being way better.
@@daveybernard1056 oh you mean a bare topper canopy?
@@bruceberg3574 Right. No sink, shower, heavy stove etc. Just a bare shell, with backpacking stove and sleeping bag/pad. Any unused weight capacity will be spent on winches, shovels, water cans, fuel cans. Not "luxury" stuff.
What about decks on pickup campers have you seen them.
“Framed wood body ”!? Why wouldn’t it be aluminum framed, at least on the body super structure, for such an expensive product?
Nice tour, great product thanks!!
Thanks for watching
Is there a bigger fridge / freezer?
Love Alaskan popup campers, but the fact that they still use wood framing is a major turn off for me. As expensive as these things are, they should be using aluminum framing throughout. That would also make them significantly lighter and less weight has so many benefits. Plus it needs an indoor shower. Aside from those issues, Alaskan is one of my top 2 favorite truck camper manufacturers with FourWheel campers.
D LG there is nothing wrong with wood framing IF you maintain your camper, there are many that have been around for years that are not rotten. Everything has its issues, what most dont understand is that most aluminum framed campers still use wood inside the aluminum tube for screws to grab, so what happens when that rots?
@@1966cambo I must disagree. Anything that is exposed to the harsh elements will eventually suffer water infiltration and we all know what water does to wood. Of course, these campers are built far better than the typical wood framed camper, but there is simply no question that aluminum framing would make them even more durable, over the long term.
Would like to have seen the features of the flatbed tray
Very nice!
How about showing the pop up procedure ...
Ask and you shall receive....

Where are the jacks to get the camper off the trucks? Thanks
Nice tour. Thanks. If possible, could you ask about how much can be carried on the roof? Just solar panels or could you put racks on top and carry gear? Could you stand on top? Again, thanks.
How is it attached? Is the camper bolted down to the flatbed and frame?
Sounds like to keep on less expensive side; slide in used truck camper, used 3/4 ton vs 1 ton truck, better gas/diesel mileage.
Can they add a shower?
I really like the look of these but jeesh that’s a lot of cash. What if you want to lower it in a storm, you have to expose your bed to the elements while lowering it!?
you can still drive with it up, its just not ideal and good to keep it that way
No jack stands when you want to remove camper from truck
worth $14,000 max.
Can you drive with the camper up and open?
How dust proof are they tho?
I love the setup but never seen a truck camper on a flatbed. How does that work or are campers set up so they can mount on a flatbed
Usually the sides of a regular truck camper are elevated because of the wheel wells in the truck bed. On a flatbed camper the whole thing is flat. You could probably make a regular truck camper work on a flat bed but you wouldn't be able to get a flatbed camper on a regular truck.
i could 'look it up'..but when you say $42 G's...does that include the 'Flatbed'??.....Cheers!...Do you also make 'One' that is basically an Empty shell With a Heater?..
He didn’t show it come down?
Insulation?
Is there an inverter? How much solar can you add? Can you use lithium batteries?
1997 too 2018 almost 30 years. Must be that common core math, just giving you shit, math on camera is hard.
I wish I could have them install a hard sided pop-up top on my Sienna Mimivan using the existing roof. I would like to keep the installed Backup camera, DVD Player and front Sunroof.
L2Cotton i was just thinking the same thing.
How was it mounted to the truck
I like the idea of a pop up hard side camper, but when you open and close these there open to the outside, if you really went to Alaska, they would be full of mosquitoes!
Tundra1966 ?
"water can't get in" means "it leaks a lot"
They look great but how can I justify buying a camper to put on my 2017 f250 that cost more then I paid for the truck especially when you can buy a new pop up trailer for less then $10,000. I’m sorry I’m not bashing your product but that price is ridiculous .
Where's the shower?
No indoor shower; they have an option for an outdoor shower outlet. Very few pop-up truck campers offer an indoor shower option and those I've seen are not very practical. You'll probably need to jump up to a much larger & heavier hard-sided truck camper with a wet bath if the shower is important to you.
Seems like these haven’t changed very much over the years.
awesome too.
You know the saying, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". Would love to have one.
That's great because you can buy a older model and still have most of what the newer models have.
Do you make a flatbed for a 3/4 ton?
"tons of space: means "almost NO SPACE at all"
I'd like to see someone sit up on the bed. I am watching a lot of these videos and no one's sitting on the bed I wonder why?
Weight
just under 2000 pounds
Ya like tommy said, none of their models have a shower. Not even the 10’ one
Brandon Halcyon you can have a shower installed. The technology of a water hose, a shower curtain and a show pan with a drain isn't rocket science. If you want it they can build it for you or you can set it up yourself and save a few bucks.
mixflip oh I know the could, just saying none of their models offer it standard. Just thought it was different. This is why I liked xp camper more to be honest.
yeah seems like a missed opportunity to turn that toilet area into a chest high wet room with a drain pan, and have the shower curtain be detachable from the roof.
can you use in winter?
Sam Wong yes
Cha-ching!$$$$$
Crazy. $42k.
Agree
Yeah I could see 30 tops but not anything over that
Including pick up to
Love the camper. But there's no way I could do a cassette toilet that's just nasty.
black tank more your style?
🇨🇦
Nice job.......who supplies the verticle lift actuators?
watch and listen.
Nice but .. Expensive .. Darn
Way too much money and no shower, how do you justify?
Exactly wtf 42k and you still got sweaty balls lmao
shsj sjsjsjsi and a stinky ass, is this 2019 or 1819?
Because when he designed it in the 1950s this was one step up from a tent
98K.... I could pay off my mortgage with that much cash and be able to take a shower. I think I'll pass. ...I like truck campers, but my goodness. I purchased a used 1999 Elkhorn 9T that has everything in it for 2500$. sits on my used F250 2006 5.4 supercab 8' bed. i invested a total of approx 8K in a used truck that now has a new engine in it with a 50k mile warrenty.. so total investment is less than 12kcash. no debt. So this to me seems wasteful, but im glad there is a market for this, that means someone is making money to burn on this industry which is actually good for everyone..
"Wasteful" isn't the word I'd use. Someone had to buy the truck & camper that you eventually bought used. I agree it would be unwise to go into debt to buy new, but there are folks who can afford to pay cash. Good on them...and good on you for wisely avoiding debt. 👍🏼
How did you come up with 98k?
Wood 😕
Way over priced for what you get
Carnut The higher price is due to Limited numbers, better materials and custom orders. Understandable but more than I’m willing to pay.
Lots of ways to reduce weight inside. Most other Brands are doing it.
sure and lots of ways to have it last a few years. I have seen these used since I was a kid, relative has a 1960s model they still go fishing with.
I'll bet they don't make them with a shower.
You pay them....they will install it.
They make a shower arrangement where you stand on a tub mounted on the floor and have a wrap around curtain on an overhead track. You then use a pull out spigot on the sink with a spray head to wet and rinse. It would do in a pinch but an outside shower can easily be added.
no shower:-/
Fu Dog Whisperer you can have it installed plus there is one outside.
They truly messed up on the design. The camper door should have been on the driver side
99% of American campers have sidewalk side access because Americans park on the right side of the road. Im sure they can build your camper to your specs though.
mixflip yea it's the time old debade that's the same with the gas cap . For me it's always better to have it on the drivers side ( person in charge ) for smoother operation . Use the tool and don't let the tool use you !
I agree all gas caps should be on the drivers side. Or even better how about a gas filler on both sides or in the middle near the license plate?
Curb side only makes since.
nathan koroush you do not camp on the curb
100 grand, no shower........ nope
Its almost like they dont want to put one in. The option to take a shower inside is nice. People have been asking for a while.
@@plants4thewin I am not ever going to shower outside in the winter, the name is "Alaskan Campers" almost a throwback to cold camping ha ha ha put in a shower dammit
You can get a shower added to the build +4k not sure if it’s new
I'd like to see someone sit up on the bed. I am watching a lot of these videos and no one's sitting on the bed I wonder why?
