  • The Sony Xperia 1 is the latest from Sony and represents a collaborative reboot of their smartphone lineup. Bringing all of Sony's electronic devisions together including Sony Alpha, CineAlta, Bravia as well as gaming and high end audio - Sony are using all of their strengths to develop a smartphone that will compete on the level of the iPhone, Huawei P30 Pro, OnePlus 7 pro, Samsung Note 10+ and other flagship phones.
The phone features a 6.5", OLED, 4k HDR display, 3 cameras that are capable of Eye-AF, HDR recording in 4k CineWide 21:9 video, and can render in 10 bit 4:2:2. This is a contender but how does it stack up?
This phone is the one to watch. It features a unique design for a smartphone and is capable of not only incredible stills, but is the best video smartphone on the market.

I too was a long time iPhone user until I changed to the Xperia 1. I love this phone! It shoots great video and can take awesome photos. I really don’t know why there’s been so much negativity about the camera. My only gripe is I can’t shoot 60fps in Cinema Pro but maybe that’s because the app only offers 2k and 4K. I’d be happy with 1080p if I had the option to shoot at 60fps. Regarding wireless charging, personally, it’s lack of doesn’t bother me one bit. Putting the phone on a wireless base to charge means you can’t pick it up and use it whilst it’s charging and I’m pretty sure it’ll be a lot slower than charging via usb.

@Steffany Santos what about the mid-range phones, which are neither expensive nor cheap, coming from China? I guess that this is the mid-rangers' time. They're pocket-friendly, but do provide you with a nice experience. I don't think I'll ever be able to buy an Apple or a Samsung flagship phone😕. They're so expensive 📣🔊! The mid-range also reminds me of the middle path in Buddhism: neither too harsh nor too lax. Moreover, China seems to me be on an innovation spree! What Chinese do today, the rest will do tomorrow.

Great video. I too have the Xperia 1, and I love the quality of the image/video it produces. Too many people, reviewers included, forget that great photography is more about capturing a scene in it's natural state, versus adding all this post processing to make the photo Instagram ready. I am huge fan of how the Xperia 1 takes natural looking shots. In some cases, the quality reminds me of my A7iii. Glad you highlight this in your review.

Back in the early days of digital I bought Sony-Erricson phones primarily to provide a portable camera. They always did make the best camera phones. These were certainly not smart phones; sort of candy bar phones I think they were called. I used to increase the image by a few percent to store images at 1800x1200 or 6x4in prints. I still have the images today in my annual folders and they still look impressive on a monitor ;-)

I think Sony doesn't want to step up too much of their smartphone camera game because they do sell those cameras to many partners and so they do not want to compete directly with them. It's the same thing with their smartphone release date, they announced it at MWC or IFA then released it 2 months later when its already too late. For Photography I think you should check out Huawei P30 Pro phones.

      Hey Kevin! 😁
Fancy seeing you here. My experience with this phone was a very mixed bag.
Cinema Pro is tremendous in both daylight and low light, but does need a gimbal to get the most from it.
Images, it's very capable but it didn't blow me away TBH. Additionally, the stock video recording leaves a LOT to be desired, with 4K recording practically unusable with poor image stabilisation and overheating problems at just 4 minutes into a video.
Not a bad phone at all, but I agree with you that the P30 Pro is far more capable 👍

Thomas Schlüter the Sony’s are miles ahead of the Z cameras so I’d say that’s a plus. I say money because they want to make plenty of it but over the long term. If they gave us everything now, the old stuff would be obsolete and they wouldn’t have to produce anything anymore. Nobody will ever make the perfect camera. I do think the way society is going that phones will conquer real cameras though. And I mean that in the sense that people will not value and really need or want people to take their pics because their phone pics are “good enough”

I want to see Sony do well because I have a Sony XZ1 myself and I know from experience that this thing is probably way better in some areas than the more popular phones of 2017. Sony has the ability to make great phones, but the fact that they signed that deal that blocks them from putting a fingerprint scanner in the power button in the US, and that their marketing is nonexistent doesn't help them. Sony could be in Samsung or LG's shoes if they just pushed a little harder for it, because Samsung phones are garbo for lack of a better term. I'll probably get flamed for that but I have my reasons.

I intensely dislike cell phone cameras, not because the don't produce seriously good images and videos, but because of the total lack of photographers control over the process. I sometimes teach digital photography. I always start with the basics of aperture, film speed and shutter speed. There is no artistic, technical or creative input from the photographer. Also; I am privileged to to spend weeks in Central Europe every year. I am offended by tourists doing "selfies" in which they reduce a 600 year old church or a 200 year old bridge to a background

If there's any actual gripe that I have with the Xperia. All I want is the 4K 60fps with stabilization that the Note 10 + has. They have awesome contrast adjustment in their modules and Sony has the horsepower and the camera know-how to get it done
We love the Slow mo 1080p. The 4K HDR, the Cine Alta app.. but you are absolutely correct we need an ecosystem of editing power that will allow us to put it all together on the fly.

I don’t think Sony missed much of a boat not including RAW. You’re talking about a relatively small group of people that even know what RAW is, let alone want to have it suck up all the room on their phone. It doesn’t sound like development dollars that make sense, even if many are making their phone buying choices based on the camera. I’m a photographer, and personally wouldn’t turn on an option to shoot RAW on a phone. In an emergency (without another camera) it would be an awesome option, but not one I’d pay for. A lot of phones take great pictures, but I don’t think it’s going to change photography much more than it already has.

Nice review. In the comparison section, I think that Huawei P30 pro would be an obvious contender. In terms of stills, it has both 5x optical zoom, ultra wide (also useful for macro), and raw support in camera. Put that into a phone with a in screen fingerprint reader and with a 40w fast charger included (70% in 30 min) and you have quite the package. Disclaimer I currently own the Huawei, and had it since April. Therefore bias may occur.
