Alternative Genres Are White "Safe Spaces"? STINKPIECE
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 19 янв 2025
- In this video, I'm responding to an ignorant piece of clickbait being passed off as music writing that paints all alternative genres--but specifically alternative rock--as a "safe space" for whites. Our writer fails to address the plethora of alt genres where that's obviously not the case, and so much more.

RATM a white band? wtf? Two of them are hispanic and one is half black. This article is so stupid that it made my head hurt.
I would also like to mention that RATM identifies as Libertarian Socialist and thus roping them in with the Alt-right is fucking stupid.
Slight mistake. So Zach is Mexican, Irish and German, Brad is Polish, Tom is Kikuyu Kenyan, Irish and Italian and Tim is French and Irish. So that would be one person is half hispanic-half white, one half black-half white, one white and the last is a Polish Jew. I had thought I read somewhere that Brad was hispanic but it was an honest mistake. I don't believe this invalidates my point though. It should be noted that anti-Jewish and anti-Polish sentiments are often carried by white supremacists.

@@Steven11400 I read the lyrics and I don't think they are.
The writer of the article doesn't address actual genres that have been "safe spaces" for white supremacists/neo-nazis, namely black metal and Oi!. I don't even understand what point the author was trying to make. Most artists in any alternative genre are left-leaning in the first place. R.E.M, Midnight Oil, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Aesop Rock, A Tribe Called Quest, Digable Planets, The Weeknd, Fleet Foxes, Slipknot, KoRn, The Knife, Lucinda Williams, Björk, Public Image Ltd, Kemba, all these artists either made music or have members with outspoken political views that are pretty liberal. And, as you said, there have been many, MANY alternative bands with non-white members, a lot of them pretty big names like Smashing Pumpkins, Alice In Chains, or Soundgarden.
The whole whole article is just clickbaity bullshit, meant to get people baffled by the title to click on it for views or for people who are uninformed in music history to somehow believe it.
I find it really odd when clickbait writers point to subcultures that are enclaves of (for want of a better phrase) SJWs, and claim that they're a hotbed of racism or sexism. I mean, if the writer is right, then surely it's an admission that their whole ideology is completely faulty. Same goes for those feminist-written articles claiming that male feminists are all misogynists. If that's the case, you may as well abandon feminism right now.
The entire idea that a music genre can be a safe space is absolutely ridiculous. Also, while I'm not very familiar with Oi!, Black Metal isn't a "safe space" for neo-nazis, most of that genre's community disavow any sort of racism. Besides, any genre of music will have shitty people of some kind or another following it.
Solatic Syot I'm specifically talking about National Socialist Black Metal along with people like Burzum (if there's enough people for there to be an entire separate genre of it, it's notable). Oi! didn't start out as a nazi genre, but it got taken over by neo-nazis and it's pretty much the go-to sound for white supremacists now.
If you think Black Metal is a Nazi genre then then you're being really lazy here.
Terence Aaron National Socialist Black Metal. There are a ton of nazis in black metal.

It has become really annoying to read some articles in some portals. Noisey, Pitchfork, Fuse...all of them tend to be really biased and see racial ans sexism prolems where they dont exist, or if it does exist they tend to radicalize it. (Real) Punk Rock is all-inclusive; a true safe space. Very strong Stinkpiece, Mr. AF.
It doesn’t matter if it wasn’t inclusive. Everything doesn’t have to be inclusive
From American Hardcore - I believe it was Henry Rollins who stated that much of his pride in the hardcore movement was that it was something ultimately white - not in the sense of excluding others, or arguing for white superiority, but he viewed it as a form of American music that finally didn't completely rip off of Black artists. It was something original that didn't simply steal from Black artists as early rock and roll and basically everything blues-based rock up to that point had done. It was made (mostly) by white, middle or working class, adolescents tired of being told how they should act.
If the writer of this article had anything resembling an eclectic knowledge of music/cultural history she would have MAYBE had a decent thesis by starting there and perhaps moving into something that shows how original work is better for racial solidarity in the long run - perhaps comparing alternative music to the blues-rock culture that came before it and comparing the racial tensions of both.
Fuck it, maybe I'll write about it.
Nvm, I have a job.
No white artist ripped off black music. You sound stupid. And no, hardcore punk wasn’t the only original form of white music. What black musicians sounded like Black Sabbath or deep purple or Pink Floyd or any rock band in the 70s, 80s or 90s? What one’s even sounded like the who or most of the Beatles. And let’s be honest most so called black American music is horrible with the exception of r n b and Motown. The blues sucked, jazz sucks and even most hip hop sucks especially live.
I think there could be a more rich discussion going on here, in the video and in the comments section, about historically racially dominated genres and cross-over artists vs. cultural appropriation and who gets airplay on which stations. I think it's hard to define a viewership/audience of a genre without implicating the music industry in the racialization of audience. Like, I remember in highschool, Eminem, would get a lot of play on the Alternative Rock station (in Kansas City), when he was definitely not a rock band. I assume there has to be something there whether it's how the record label was promoting his music, or how the radio stations are making assumptions about which audiences where, will receive what music. I think there was a very strong cultural assumption by people in the industry that since Eminem was white, and occasionally talked about his whiteness within his music that he should be played on the radio station dominated by white artists (decisions made by the producers & distributors of the music more so than by the audiences requesting it).
I went to a mostly Black highschool in KC, and everybody listened to everything (I had friends who even listened to Smooth Jazz n' shit), however, to listen to as much variety of music that people wanted to there was a lot of searching and wading through stuff you weren't looking to hear (mostly radio Ads) in the genre'd (and racialized) radio stations. In highschool we'd talk about the differences between what was being presented to us as White Radio vs Black Radio and how we'd really like a mix of things. 'Cept, of course, what was labelled as "Mix" radio stations was some of the worst thinly veiled rascism: "We play all of the hits, with none of that Rap" but they would also definitely not play country music on those stations as well. It's not surprising to me that post-'90's Rap and Country are the two genres still managing to prop up the industry through record sales. 'Cause y'know, to Anthony's point: WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME THAT ALT_ROCK WAS RELEVANT? As a cultural force or an economic one? Like 2003 with the Strokes and the White Stripes? There've been plenty of bands (well a few) that have helped my faith in rock music limp along since the '90's, but there is just so much more exciting shit in other spaces...
It's my favorite MRA music vlogger, Altrighthony Fascistano! Sick vid!

Hey!! Love your content. About this, it is super cool the way you point out how obviously mistaken it is t extrapolate on terminology with actual ideology of consumption. How is it that "genere" defines ideology?...specifically if we`re talking of what`s being happening in the last 18 years in which nobody can actually identify with anything being pruduced in the name of "arts". A white kid can easily enjoy hip hop songs as well as trash metal or even Justin B. withouth the neeed to identify with any of the ideologies behind what those artists represent. It sucks that many of the most opinionated people aren`t really clever on having firm base on that that they so much like to be seen commenting about. Look at my African-American over here!
Who cares if it is all white? Why is that a bad thing?
In 1994 my friend, who was seriously into RnB, solemnly predicted that RnB and hip-hop would be the most popular music. At that time the post 92 rush of Nirvana style sludge was still being thrown at people, loudly. I had to slap him across the head with the free music media paper that was published then and show him the charts. The RnB charts. The Hip-Hop charts. The Pop charts. The Alternative charts. Then i patiently explained to him that RnB and Hip-Hop were about 95% of the music dollar in our country, always had been, that we had separate charts because if it was all on one graph Nirvana wouldn't appear as a pixel.
Two of the whitest crowds i've ever seen were the raves when they first got popular (and full of kids) at that time, and the crowd to see Tool. I went with my brother and he said "A lot of nice clean t-shirts" and i smirked and said "Pretty white crowd." We could feel people around us getting uncomfortable, one even said "What are you saying?" but it was true, the crowd was rock solid mayo.
In Australia we've had this free-to-air music program that ran Friday and Saturday nights that played endless music videos. It would be radio fodder until about midnight, then all the NIN and Weezer and grungy crud, then at about 6am, when socialites are arriving home from clubs, it would all be hip-hop, fun-in-the-sun good life stuff, then back to mainstream by mid-morning finishing at noon. It was always a joke for us that the drop-d distorted guitar stuff we liked was really for white nerds, while other genres were for people who actually went out at those hours.
Yes the article was lazy bait, i know there's socio-economic details i've missed and the market is definitely more atomized now by genre.
That was a lot of words. Still not sure what your point was.

As a fairly left leaning guy almost all of my music is Alt genres Alt rock and Alt metal. I never knew I was racist, seriously get this shit outta here. The dumbest shit I heard, and I've read Polygon articles.
The article is silly but I think the point stands that, while there are always exceptions, music is cultural and racial. Reggae is primarily Caribbean and black, Black Metal is primarily Nordic and white, Country is primarily American and white, Grime is primarily a cultural melting pot (both British and outside cultures) and black. Bad Brains played typically white music (Punk) but H.R. was a black Brit of Jamaican descent and so they played Reggae too. The Beatles played covers of black Motown/R&B musicians in their early days but removed much of the 'black' out of their music and had far more success with (typically white) Western linear melodies. McCartney even said, Motown was a "template of what not to do." The Beatles' Indian inspired instrumentation ("Within You, Without You") also doesn't have as much commercial success as their jolly 'Western' 3-4 minute sing alongs. Indian classical music inspired music would struggle to be a successful single in the west because it is not their culture.
