it's so funny to me how people made thinkpieces about how this "EP" was supposed to be Hayden abandoning her mainstream fanbase and when someone asked her on Tumblr she just said that "she liked drone music so she wanted to make a drone project"
I remember seeing that lol, she also made some videos about circles and stuff related to the shape of sounds, which seemed a bit strange at first but make total sense now
ah thank you for this. I've seen so many people pushing the narrative of the album (/EP) being some act of rebellion but nobody was actually providing a source for it... it felt like something people had made up to make themselves look cooler because /they/ like Perverts. Nice to have confirmation that she just made the music bc she likes the sound lol.
By the way, Anthony, it's labeled as an EP solely to get out of a contract with Dr. Luke. Her label is a subsidiary of Prescription Records which is owned by Dr. Luke, which she didn't know when she was signing to them and had no other label to turn to. They needed an "EP" (under ten tracks) from her. It shouldn't be treated as an EP, it's just labeled that way as a middle finger to Dr. Luke.
Ethel Cain is so unbelievably talented she gives me what I don't even know I needed. The way she is so meticulous and intentional with every single choice she makes is so evident but in a way that makes you appreciate it even more, not in a way that seems contrived. I personally loved Perverts but I think the people that like her other work will appreciate this even if it's not their thing
Ethel Cain could lock me in her basement for 12 years, only feeding me rats and sewer water, and I would thank her for the incredible opportunity and apologize for breathing the same air as her.
I believe that the reason this project is labeled as an EP is because Ethel Cain wanted to get out of her contract with the publishing rights to her music, which is ran by Dr. Luke.
Played this on repeat while driving home from work. Straight up disassociated, ended up in Colorado feeling like I got abducted by aliens. 10/10 EP, would listen again
This "EP" is the equivalent of how Nico went from the gorgeous, folky baroque pop of her solo debut Chelsea Girl to the drone-laden, nightmarish avant-folk sound of her second album The Marble Index.
I used to think Ethel Cain was overhyped, but she really won me over with this one. Perverts is the most dark and hauntingly beautiful “EP” I’ve heard this decade.
This album has been on repeat for me recently. Perfect fit for the long, quiet, dark, somewhat suffocating winter. I LOVE the shift she has made and look forward to listening to wha she comes up with moving forward
My theory on why is that this is an EP and not an album is because Hayden wanted to make an album trilogy that follows the Ethel Cain storyline from Preacher’s Daughter, and Perverts is separate from that. This is just pure speculation though, Hayden didn’t actually confirm this was the reason lol
Honestly, if she alienated the TikTok pop girlies with this one then good for her. A large portion of those fans were getting wildly parasocial with her.
I think she’s mostly calling it an EP because it doesn’t follow the Ethel Cain character’s lore/storyline cause Inbred is also technically an EP and it’s like 45 minutes long
honestly to+for me this ep sounds like what i thought she would sound like. in a good way. we're all lingua ignota stans over here, including myself, so when i started hearing about ethel cain it was always comparing them. so i went into preachers daughter expecting something more musically + vocally fucked up and was obviously not met with that lmao. which isn't a bad thing ofc, it's good for artists to be different from one another, it just wasn't what i was interested in musically. this ep is way more up my alley and i also super respect it as an artistic move and departure for her a lot. from what i've seen it seems to have scared a couple of her hoes which is fun
I'm surprised you looked into the meanings, explanations, stories, inspirations, and the concept in general instead of just the sound which is also great, whether you understand it or not. I'll take a strong 8 to a light 9, however I still think you underrated Preacher's Daughter.
9 songs and a runtime of an hour and a half. Truly one of the EPs of all time.
some might even say, of all time.
I mean according to her label it does qualify as an EP…
@@aubreyxengland That is indeed what razorsphere said

Some people get confused when they discover that most of the times, people make the music they make simply because that's how they want it, lol
chronically online people on twitter are a disease
I remember seeing that lol, she also made some videos about circles and stuff related to the shape of sounds, which seemed a bit strange at first but make total sense now

Who’s Ethel signed to now?
This sounds interesting. Can you explain why exactly making an album instead of EP is middle finger?
Contract is 2 ep 1 album
isn’t she signed to AWAL/Daughters of Cain?
Damn, oof, yikes. Christ. None of the above.
Giving Hayden a yellow flannel has earned you a special place in puppygirl heaven, Anthony.
+2
i feel like i just had an aneurysm reading this
How do I get in too
10:27 RIP David Lynch 🩶
I thought the same thing ;_;

“PERERTS” is definitely one of my favorite songs from this EP.
i fixed it immediately after posting, chill 😭 -editor
@@theneedledropit’s fine lol, I just found it kinda funny
@@theneedledrop anthony you aren’t fooling us by posing as your „editor“
Still can't believe Ethal Cain named this ep after Anthony
I’m not a huge music nerd so I came to this video thinking the H3H3 guy made an album and you were clowning on it.
Ethal Clain
This is a funny joke
the trans girls are healing after the trauma of preacher's daughter

In memory of David Lynch. I found Perverts to be pretty Lynchian with the soundscapes it's conveying.
the fact that my name is Hayden and hearing him praising Hayden makes me proud to be a Hayden😭😭😭
Thank you for clarifying that I do in fact have the correct opinion on this proyect Melon
Perverts was a very pleasant surprise for me. As someone who never really liked her music, this EP really made me fan
mother, in fact, mothered. this is the mothering.
I mean the hour and a half "EP" is a drone music classic, a mainstay really. Even if she did it to spite Dr Luke it still works :)
I-i-is Classics week over????!! 😢😢😢😢
No disintegration I feel awful
no perverts and lana were just so good that they were considered instant classics on release
@Zaid95959ik bro i’ve been asking for disintegration for years, that and siamese dream
Quite weird that they ended it after only 8 days, and without the description marking the end of it if so…
A 10/10 but how many times can you actually listen to it? It's hard to shake off the darkness afterwards.
Honestly, if she alienated the TikTok pop girlies with this one then good for her. A large portion of those fans were getting wildly parasocial with her.
RIP Classics Week 2025 🫡🫡
Great description
i used to pray for times like this
the way I was stalking your account waiting for this review ! Thank you melon!
Genuinely the most terrifying album I’ve ever listened to paralyzed me and I couldn’t turn it off genuinely freaked me the fuck out of
Gooner
Be quiet Anthony you’re interrupting my quiet time.
I gave it a 10/10. Enamored
Where's the description
Perthony Vertano OMG
Anthony. I have an idea. U should do a tier list on songs with great music videos
OMG I thought that you would hate this EP, I'm so surprised
not so much of a fan before but this one is on repeat.
WHERE IS THE VESPERTINE CLASSIC REVIEW
Next year mate
David Lynch would have loved this record. I know I did
I think she’s mostly calling it an EP because it doesn’t follow the Ethel Cain character’s lore/storyline cause Inbred is also technically an EP and it’s like 45 minutes long
Plus I’m pretty sure her label describes an EP as a project that is between 2 and 9 songs, with no mention of length counting
First yellow flannel of 2025!
Just got PREACHERS DAUGHTER on CD from ETSY, Hope to buy PERVERTS too, soon... Why they are not released on CD amazes me!
All I want is her to now do a collab with Boris

Cameron Winter heads do yall think we’re ever getting that Heavy Metal review
I kind of doubt it, but I hope so.

You should review "Ring" by The Connells, the album really deserves more recognition
I am what I am, and I am listening to an hour and twenty nine minute EP
Need a colab with Uboa next
now interview her!
Love love love this EP!!
Why was ethel referring to you in the ep title?
this is not the right time anthony. please delete this video immediately and reupload it when i have time to watch it. thanks!
Ouuu yellow flannel, good for you Hayden
YEAHHH EIGHT OUT OF TEN BABYYYYY
Stay based and never change melon man.
I appreciate you being open with us Melon but you didn’t have to say you’re “feeling a strong 6 to light 9” to make your point
wow! - I'm a little stunned (in a good way)
I gave it a 7, just dragged a bit too much for me to think of it as any more than 'good enough'
