I saw Anthony Fantano at a record store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my browsing, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen vinyls in his hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the vinyls and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and grinned at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by opening his mouth really wide.
Could you imagine looking at like pre-socrates ancient greek philosophers saying the earth was flat and going "ermmmm.... yeah. didn't age well my dudes"
Spot-on as usual Anthony. She burned all the bridges. Here's an example: a part of the brazilian lgbt community used to love her, she performed in São Paulo and people treated her like a QUEEN. It was honeymoon... until she started talking shit about brazilians in her FB page because of a few trolls. She said all kinds of prejudiced stuff. Even her fans couldn't find a way to defend her, some turned their back on her. And now I highly doubt she'll be invited to perform again... And it's not because of her skin or her gender, it's because she's vicious and out of control. (Will Azealia Banks come for you bc of this video??? I'll wait.)
She’s African American and we practice forms of African spirituality as well in particular voodoo so how can we appropriate what was given to us ALL Africans in the diaspora.
The writer seems to conveniently forget that people STILL buy tickets to see Lauryn Hill live, despite the fact that she is NOTORIOUS for canceling shows. That’s how much of an impact she has had.
"It's that this kind of conversation represents a privilege afforded to male artists throughout history, from Van Gogh to Dostoevsky." Right. Except Van Gogh was a social outcast who died in anonymity. Some privilege, hey? The author of this junk needs to stop writing shitty articles and pick up a fucking history book.
Being an Azealia Banks fan is an exercise in separating the music from the person, much like you have to do with Kanye sometimes. That being said, I agreed with most of the points in this video, save for the fact that her music is mediocre. Heavy Metal and Reflective, Desperado, and Miss Amor are all examples of great songs she made, and I think her contribution to hip hop is important.
She's a self-sabotager, she always will be. It's like she can't help herself. She can't stop fighting, can't stop causing drama. She could have blown up. But her window is gone, you know? You have a certain window where you can become a star if you plan it right. But she didn't. It's over. It's Rita Ora territory for her for the rest of her career. And it sucks. Because she's better than that.
It's a real damn shame about Azealia because while everything you said here is true I still think her 1991 EP back from 2012 is still her strongest work - fresh and full of promise. She went left so quick and went so wrong so fast and her music suffered a whole dang lot.
John Doe yeah people still saying 212 is her only hit is dumb asf . I don’t see how anyone can sit there , listen to her music and come to that conclusion.
whizzard blizzard magnum opus is a bit grand isn't it? Best work maybe, but let's reserve the hyperbole for classic albums, otherwise we run out of language!
Kinda hypocritical for her to get (rightfully) upset about alleged sexist criticism about her physical appearance, and then slam Sia who largely stays out of the social media pop sphere because she's severely anxious, suffers from bipolar and has low physical self-esteem, claiming that she's too ugly to show her face etc etc. That's just fucking sad, man.
Pitchfork sucks ass at op-eds and thinkpieces in general. So glad you did this one. You should also do one on that godawful Mark Kozelek critique back in 2014
theneedledrop Yeah I thought so. It was just so infuriating to read the author fucking compare a joke song to sexual assaults. Keep up these videos! Love your channel!
This is the greatest video you've ever made. Not only brilliant criticism of Pitchfork's article and Azealia as a person, but also an enlightening perspective on artistry and influence.
Honestly you were too nice Anthony. Azealia Banks is totally fucking irrelevant. Even people who'd call themselves a fan of her didn't buy her album. They downloaded one track and follow her shenanigans on social media.
JedidiahJ pretty much yeah, I like some of her music but she's such a fucking not job that, barring a fetish for sadomasochism, I can't possibly understand how ANYONE could actually identify as a fan of hers.
Bravoman001 How so? I liked every single from Beauty Behind the Madness and I bought that album. It's an album I like a lot. He was also instrumental in the success of Drake's moodier works by way of production and writing credits on both "Take Care" and "Nothing Was the Same." I fail to see how The Weeknd is a one hit wonder who's irrelevant with bandwagon fans.
Weeknd sells major records and all his singles go number 1 and even before the mainstream success he has classic mixtapes that are critically acclaimed that has changed and revolutionized his genre and created dark wave r&b that is so popular today he is bonifed talent and a force in the music industry rn and that can't be argued
It sucks that she's done so much negative to her career because Broke with Expensive Taste is ... really fucking good. It's an album that really grows on you.
Also, the reason people are more apologetic about Kanye than they are about Azealia is because Kanye has a prolific body of work that will influence music for the next 20 years (whether you like it or not). Azealia has been riding the hype of one hot single for the past couple years and instead of releasing more intriguing or challenging music, she just does a little dance on twitter begging people, "Please, keep paying attention to me!".
MrMultiGamer And the irony is that this melonhead is giving her just that. RELEVANCY! A genius thing to do would be not mentioning her name at all since yall like to call her irrelevant ao much but publication and critics alike can't even do a simple thing called ignoring.
Broke With Expensive Taste is one of the best "Rap Albums" in years. It is truly Innovative Original and Refreshing. Listen to the music, not the twitter rants, not the fb live bs, not media outlets especially the media outlets perpetrating as DJ's and music channels.
This is not true. She has more work other than 212 that was well received. This video maker says Azealia has done nothing since 212 and yet he reviewed one of her albums after 212, said it sucked and his video was downvoted into oblivion because people disagreed. There is no rational reason to hate Azealia Banks, and most claims you make about her are just based on lies.
I thought the album was really good. One of the best female rap albums in a while. But I also think she is pretty nuts. She also didn't ask for this Pitchfork hipster to write the article though. I think the bigger thing is why did this idiot think this was such a necessary article? Was there nothing else to write about?
Holy Shit...this video is brutal. I'm an Azealia Banks fan, but I have to admit...the only thing stopping Azealia, is Azealia's self-induced destruction. If she just chilled out, she could've been on Rihanna's level, or at least give Nicki Minaj a run for her money.
I really wanted to support her. She was always vocal about the oppression and mockery of black women, which is something I believe does happen in our society. But when she acts out and says/does all of these crazy things, she is NOT a valid representation of black women. The Kanye comparison is spot on as well. Kanye has done some outrageous things but he has never been as disrespectful as Azealia.
I won't say that I know this is all 100% correct information because it's secondhand, but my close friend used to be a massive fan of her and she says (similarly to what you've said) that at the beginning of her career, she used her platform in a very productive and thought-provoking way, outlining the systemic struggles that black women are met with, and the black community as a whole. It's depressing that her positive message can be viewed as almost hypocritical retrospectively, as a person can't simultaneously be vocal about the plight of a minority and be super bigoted towards those from India or the Middle-East, as well as being overty homophobic. I agree with you wholeheartedly and I think it's a shame that some people view celebrities as the voice or representation of black women, or that a single female celebrity with a twisted view on feminism or gender issues is the voice of feminism as a whole, or that a celebrity with a poorly thought-out political platform is the voice or face of that political faction, etc etc. I hate seeing people feel like they have to apologize for the views of a celebrity because they too belong to that minority, or sex, or gender, because in a better world people wouldn't equate a single person's views to the viewpoint of the whole.
DAMN! You called her a one hit wonder-SAVAGE! You're right tho. I never thought of her like that because of the spectacles she creates to keep herself relevant. But the fact is as an artist- SHE IS A ONE HIT WONDER. Most just fade away. But she's trying real hard to cling to the edge of cliff of her fame. This might be the start of a new normal for mediocre artists in this new age of social media so get used to the bullshit people!
Fuck, these comments are brutal. Yah, she's fuckin' nuts but I don't see why that has to factor into how we view her music. I'm not arguing she's not crazy, but all that aside, does nobody listen to her music? I don't think people would shit all over her if she wasn't as outspoken as she is. Like "Broke With Expensive Taste" is the shit. I make no apologies for saying that.
Honestly, the article's implication that THOSE kinds of tweets are typical black woman behavior is kind of.....ok, extremely racist. (Way to go, Pitchfork.) And repeated shitty behavior is never a product of mental illness alone. It's a product of having no morals.
Jeez, Fantano. You mercilessly killed her at the end. I like Azealia and I think it is really sad what happened to her. She got the chance of being famous and to make money but blew it.
Album Surgeon rick ross' album wasnt that bad. The production sounded classy, he unfortunately had some trap songs cuz trap, and he talked about so interesting things about his life. Some of the lines were weird tho lol. More life was booty cheeks.
"Aileen Wuornos gets so much unnecessary hate and gets neglected and it's all because she's a woman in a misogynists world. Absolutely sickening. I mean she did kill 7 men, but thats not the point, the point is she is a woman so she should be rewarded for being a woman, and her actions should never dictate how people treat her." I know thats a very extreme example but thats pretty much what this article is saying.
I liked what you said about Kid Cudi at the beginning. That is exactly why Cudi is such an important artist to me. He puts his suicidal thoughts and depression perfectly into his lyrics, and makes many feel understood. That is exactly why I like Kid Cudi, and your reviews never really mentioned the topics in his lyrics. Good to know that you acknowladge it in this video though :)
Aww yis. Been waiting for Fantano to really rip into Pitchfork for a while now. Don't get me wrong, they have some great moments of music journalism... but then they have moments like this :)
i sympathize because i feel her voice is needed she has a following for a reason. i sympathize because shes human and i know what its like to feel voiceless, not excusing her actions. and her music is cutting edge and you know it, shes innovative af and has pipes her ranges are hypnotizing and also disrespecting culture is a no no especially one as deep rooted as african. regardless of how "made up" you feel it is anthony js i get that you are a commentator but please be more objective and not so pretentious thank you babe

"Aileen Wuornos gets so much unnecessary hate and gets neglected and it's all because she's a woman in a misogynists world. Absolutely sickening. I mean she did kill 7 men, but thats not the point, the point is she is a woman so she should be rewarded for being a woman, and her actions should never dictate how people treat her."
I know thats a very extreme example but thats pretty much what this article is saying.
This is probably one of your best segments besides actual reviews now.
6:08 well this aged like milk
This channel just rips off The List with Mr. List wtf
love that guy
What do you mean and I can’t find the channel btw.
one of my favorite series of yours
6:15 aged like milk
If this was a diss track it would be the most savage of 2017 so far
"What do I know about privilege? I didn't go to Princeton."
OOOOOOOOOOOO SHIIIIIIIIIITTTT SOOOOONNNN
It’s funny that the same author mocked Azalea Banks on twitter during one of her many beefs
50 Song Memoir
Max Power Sucks that some of the album is showtunes esque but there are still a ton of great songs on there !
I'll prefer not getting a "good night sleep, forever" thank you very much
I really enjoy this series. Quality content. Keep it up, memethony!
wow a ten?? I knew Drake did better on this album, but damn!
Aww yis. Been waiting for Fantano to really rip into Pitchfork for a while now. Don't get me wrong, they have some great moments of music journalism... but then they have moments like this :)
plus there's an example of an artist who was shunned in the same way - BOB
TheHajinator that's because the illuminati is mad that he's exposing the truth that the earth is flat so they ruined his career
MORE OF THIS. I LOVE THIS SERIES.
id say she puts her struggles in her music did u not hear BWET?
i sympathize because i feel her voice is needed she has a following for a reason. i sympathize because shes human and i know what its like to feel voiceless, not excusing her actions. and her music is cutting edge and you know it, shes innovative af and has pipes her ranges are hypnotizing and also disrespecting culture is a no no especially one as deep rooted as african. regardless of how "made up" you feel it is anthony js i get that you are a commentator but please be more objective and not so pretentious thank you babe
@@omaraorwhatever8428 lol she called all Irish women ugly, called us all barbarians and responded to a dude saying “don’t you have a famine to go die in?” She’s a scumbag man, no one needs her xenophobic ass.
yo this was the baddest burn ive seen in a while
212 still bangs tho
You provide a valuable service. Luv u
6:16 well that part aged like fine milk, didn't it?
That was the best Spanish I've ever heard. Thank you Anthony.
Pitchfork is just The Needle Drop for Anthony Fantanos.
So is this Waldo or YG?
These stink pieces are some of the best content youve put out. Please do more.
Pornography is the best Cure album!
I agree
No, it's boring.
Pornography is the first Cure album I owned. Great purchase on my part, so I agree with you.
It's the only one (of their early works) I can't get into for some reason! Nothing grabs me or makes me want to revisit it yet
I really thought y'all were actually talking about pornography, not a band who made an album called pornography
MORE STINKPIECES PLS I LOVE IT WHEN YOU'RE ANGRY
3 years on. Can confirm she has fallen into obscurity.
This is a reality check for the ages. I really hope she sees this!
Holy shit this was fucking savage. You just ethered her soul. RIP Azealie Banks 2011 - 2017.
I like it when I bump into a new channel and I know it is my next on-the-bus-world-blocker. 👏👏👏👏👏
BWET still slaps
I couldn't agree more. When it comes to Azealia Banks, all I ever hear about is Twitter beef with ANYONE. Never hear or have heard about her music.
Azealia Banks cycle:
1. Insult someone, or say something racist, homophobic.
2. Backpedal on any harmful statements, and say i have a friend of that race or sexual preference.
3. Become victim in one way or another.
4. Talk about the plight of black people and get attention she craves.
5. Release a song/album.
Aaaand repeat
You could make a video like this for literally every article on pitchfork.
