      @@brianprentissI've been a Rush fan since discovering them in college in 1979. For many years I've promoted songs from this album on social media - and this song "Available Light" in particular. Indeed, remember the "Hold Your Fire" album from 1987 that was considered "controversial" by many fans? I considered "Hold Your Fire" to be a transcendent album by Rush - and I always thought of "Available Light" as being a reflection of the beautiful music on "Hold Your Fire."

      Presto may be one of rush's worst album in many people's eyes but in mine it is their best album. For the record all songs on presto are very insightful- a truth from the other side of life that no one wants to hear or talk about. It is hard to pick the best song on presto ( depends on the mood you are in).

    • @rumourhats
      @rumourhats 11 месяцев назад

      @@DuaneElliott-j6o Presto really feels like a Geddy solo album - singer/songwriter alanis morissette type stuff. it's not really rock, it's too clean, too much separation between instruments. It's a pop-rock album - which is cool, if you like that sorta thing. But considering grunge was happening, steve albini, the pixies, sonic youth, etc... Idk, I feel after PW, HYF - Rush could have made a raw/noisy album, but they're too canadian, too well refined for that, I suppose. Presto feels like a continuation of the songwriting of HYF, but it lacks that 80s synth pazzazz.

  • @davin6175

    There were a few really strong songs on this album that are forgotten or dismissed simply because they came at the very end of a long album. This is a prime example being the closing track on the album.
    I certainly would agree that this a career highlight of the power and emotional delivery Geddy was capable of vocally. Stripping back the band's arrangement lets us discover what Geddy has always done. Red Tide was another underappreciated gem from the end of this album. This may not be the kind of song or sound Rush is typically known for, but as usual, when they challenged themselves to do something different, they did it well!

    I remember hearing this for the first time when it was released in 89' (WTF, 31 years?!?!), I was 17.
    I was fortunate to have my brother introduce my sister and myself to Rush just as Moving Pictures came out and have been on the Rush Express ever since!
    New album releases were an event! Get some funds together, ditch school, whatever it took for us three to go to the record store and score that new vinyl, then cassette, and CD by this album. Go home and listen to it together for the rest of the day.
    But this track, this track. I immediately connected with it and it was the first song to really get me emotionally and make my eyes leak! And also the song that opened my emotions up to other deep tracks (Losing It, Afterimage and a few others got me going as well after this). I wondered how these three guys could just shred and melt your face one moment then turn around and make your face melt by crying in another, pure magic these three.
    Such a dark and pretty song where all 3 are on extra point, and the subtle yet powerful guitar work just cut to my core, not to mention that snare. Always wished they would play this live but no luck but we did get Losing It on the last tour and it was most excellent. Now with Neil gone, Afterimage and The Garden are damn near impossible to listen to...

    Presto was so beautiful, but a chaotic departure from 1987's Hold Your Fire. New producer, more experimentation, etc. The entire 80's was this revolving door for them. But Available Light is just on some other planet of pure aesthetics. You hear a lot of musical movements in this piece, and it may be the one song where Geddy's voice, Alex's guitar, and Neil's lyrics are in absolute harmony. But you can probably say that about many of their songs. They have been profound influences on me, and I am grateful for what they have left us.

    I think this is one of the best vocal efforts that Geddy has done. The song as a whole is typical of Rush, just sublime.

    Alex lifeson occasionally plays keyboard too. Also geddy controls sounds with foot pedals as well

    I wondered for a time when this was first released if this song might not be their best ever. 30+ years later I think it is probably behind the likes of Limelight and Spirit of Radio; however, it is right up there with their best.

    Neil's poetic nature is familial - his brother is a poet. :) Def one of the gems of their career. Beautiful.

    PRESTO and ROLL THE BONES are brilliant albums. Although the musicianship is incredible and polished the highlight of the 2 albums is the amazing song writing. The only constructive criticism on the two albums is the lack of bottom end (BASS),hence the thin, crispy sounding production. Also noted in interviews by Geddy,Alex and Neil. Hence as soon as they hit their next album COUNTERPARTS they purposely went back to basic raw sound, less keyboards and more bottom end. Allas COUNTERPARTS was born. Another amazing album from RUSH. The first song ANIMATE is a good start for a reaction as it is an opening statement of a going back to their roots while in thunderous form. CHEERS!!

    Might be Rush’s most underrated song, imo. I just love it. I wish they played this one live. Presto is such an underrated album. Some of Neil’s best lyrics are on this album, imo.
