@Hey I think there is something to this. Some see humor, like intentional humor, in the gospels. For instance, Jesus walking across the water, so who gets out of the boat and tries walking to him? The apostle named rock, of course. And... that gently pokes fun, respectfully, at St. Peter while avoiding even friendly irreverence toward Jesus.
Once, in a fit of sadness after being rejected by a girl, I was in tears literally asking God, "God, just give me someome to love!" I had my music playing on shuffle in the background, the very next song that started playing was "Dont pray for love" I was laughing through tears😂😂 I believe I got to briefly experience God's humor
My favorite story in this regard concerns Saint Teresa of Avila. As St. Teresa made her way to her convent during a fierce rainstorm, she slipped down an embankment and fell squarely into the mud. The irrepressible nun looked up to heaven and remarked to God, "If this is how You treat Your friends, no wonder why You have so few of them!"
Went to Mass today and Fr. told a joke in his homily. Jesus was walking through the streets of Heaven and He noticed people in the streets who were not supposed to be there. He went to see St. Peter at the gate. "Peter you are slacking off, letting the wrong people into Heaven." "It's not me Lord. I sent them away like you told me to, but then they go around the back way and Your Mother lets them in." (He told it to illustrate Our Lady's desire for our salvation.)
wait I heard the same joke. But like the joke also had a part where it said mother Mary let them in through the back door, and it made me feel really good, I don’t think I can ever forgot that “joke” statement.
One afternoon my electricity went off in my house. I sort of panicked because I never had it go off since I moved there. I was thinking, "I hope it goes back on before it gets dark." So, Later on I thought," OK, I think I'll read the Bible for awhile while it's still light out. So, I asked God which book in the Bible He wanted me to read. He said start in Genesis. Which I thought was sort of odd. But, I started to read it Then I got the joke, when I got to Genesis 1:3 And God said, "Let there be light."
@soundofmaggots - I apologize for my comment. I was thinking it was from another video that I had said in my comment to them that God speaks to me in my heart/spirit. Sorry about that.
I recently bought a beautiful drawing of Jesus. It is pretty large. I was trying to put it into a frame which I had used for another project. The drawing is of Jesus smiling broadly. I love it. Anyway I was struggling to hammer the nails in the frame straight. Some were okay but the last one was really giving me a problem. I said to God "I really want to put this picture of you in my room! Help me out here! YOU were a carpenter!" I smiled as I said it with much love, affection and joy. Next thing, the nail went in perfectly. The drawing is next to my bed.

I KNOW God has a sense of humor because He'll often joke with me when I'm talking to Him. Usually I'll be in my car, just telling God my problems, and He'll often respond to me in the form of a Christian radio host talking about a certain subject, sending me a sign that relates to something I'm dealing with, or sometimes I'll just hear His still, quiet voice in the back of my mind, giving me direct counsel- sometimes He'll even completely roast me or crack a joke at my expense. One of these times I was talking to God about my own downfalls and frustrations- I don't remember the exact details- and immediately a meme popped into the back of my mind- the one of Michael Jordan saying, "Stop it. Get some help." It felt very much like God sent that vision to me and it made me laugh out loud, because in context to the conversation I was having with Him, it worked well and I didn't see it coming. I'm sure I sound crazy to some but to this day I swear God sent me that meme. x'D
I think another way to make God laugh is to try to figure out His mysterious ways. It's hard enough to figure out people, let alone the one who created us.
Having a relationship with Him where well humourous things take place is one thing. Jokes that mock God and the things of God is something else entirely .
I often wake up during the night and will pray the Divine Mercy for those in most need and dying. Yesterday, our daughter sent us a text of an adorable kitten in need of a home one 2 cats recently died). I was excited and told her that if the family was able wait till we returned from vacation in a week, we would immediately connect with them. So, I began to fall back asleep and caught myself saying, “ for the sake of Your Sorrowful kitten, have mercy on us and the whole world.” I was now more awake and began to chuckle, quickly thinking, God has a great sense of humor and HE SURE KNOWS what was in the back of my mind!

God loves us so much he even gave us the great sense of humor. Not in a disrespectful way, but just another way to free our minds. Every situation is different .
Jesus came upon a small crowd who had surrounded a young woman they believed to be an adulteress. They were preparing to stone her to death. To calm the situation, Jesus said: "Whoever is without sin among you, let them cast the first stone." Suddenly, an old lady at the back of the crowd picked up a huge rock and lobbed it at the young woman. "Mom, not you!"

A good message Fr Mike , shaking things up a bit , sometimes we as believers can look like we’ve been baptised in lemon juice , and one wonders were the fruits of the spirit have gone . Joy and laughter manifested by our carnal mind , by way of our flesh are always created at a cost to others , including those around us receiving it , our flesh tends to TAKE to receive joy . The Spirit of life SUPPLIES us with all joy through the love of Christ Jesus flowing out of us , and the laughter and happiness manifested becomes your shining light giving others the love you’ve received , to God be the glory. Galatians 5:22-23 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. Know your Identity in Christ Jesus and keep your eyes on him , and you won’t sink Mathew 14 v 22 to 33.
Thank you for this video, i really enjoy Watching your channel because you answer questions i often ask myself. Moreover you are totaly Right, in a Good and respectful relationship there is also room for jokes.
Thanks for answering a question I didn’t know I had. Also, my opinion is that God has the greatest sense of humor because he created humor. However... there is a line.
I am a proud Catholic but I find this joke funny: "Moses came back down the mountain and met his fellow jews and said 'Ive got good news and bad news. The good news is I got him down to 10, the bad news is adultery is still on there".
I think the best God/saints/catholic/jesus jokes are ones that have a basis in the true nature of God. The joke about the boats and helicopter in the flood for example define God's work in the world. Also, jokes about Jesuits are fair game.
I always thought of that as more of an anecdote rather than a true joke. One of my favorites A very religious man was once caught in rising floodwaters. He climbed onto the roof of his house and trusted God to rescue him. A neighbour came by in a canoe and said, “The waters will soon be above your house. Hop in and we’ll paddle to safety.” “No thanks” replied the religious man. “I’ve prayed to God and I’m sure he will save me” A short time later the police came by in a boat. “The waters will soon be above your house. Hop in and we’ll take you to safety.” “No thanks” replied the religious man. “I’ve prayed to God and I’m sure he will save me” A little time later a rescue services helicopter hovered overhead, let down a rope ladder and said. “The waters will soon be above your house. Climb the ladder and we’ll fly you to safety.” “No thanks” replied the religious man. “I’ve prayed to God and I’m sure he will save me” All this time the floodwaters continued to rise, until soon they reached above the roof and the religious man drowned. When he arrived at heaven he demanded an audience with God. Ushered into God’s throne room he said, “Lord, why am I here in heaven? I prayed for you to save me, I trusted you to save me from that flood.” “Yes you did my child” replied the Lord. “And I sent you a canoe, a boat and a helicopter. But you never got in.”
Amen god loves yall😭 lets all pray for those unsaved and less fortunate people guys who dont have our blessings and salvation and as a bonus: god helped me to worship in public 💪💪🙌
OK. That was funny. I was seriously telling an atheist here about salvation. And all of a sudden the video started and you made that funny noise. That startled me. LoL.
Matthew McConaughey impersonation... Fr. Mike has helped my life so much. I look at things in a new and different way Perfect Jesus humor is from Kinky Friedman and the Texas Jewboys
I found a book by a stoic, Marcus Aurelius. When Jesus died on the cross and then lamented “Father forgive them for they know not what they do.” he mirrored some of that stoicism though was certainly not imperfect and, wishing not to be besmirched with their murder, he thus lamented. God must have been that stoic ten times over. It is a big leap to think that God would hold that sin against Jesus and Jesus knew it. Thank you for your teaching. I appreciate you.
Father, on the other side of this, I often wondered and mostly believe, that God has a sense of humor. As an example, whenever I'm having one of those crazy days when nothing can seem to go right, I look up and say or think: "Okay, God you can stop laughing." And then I begin to laugh at myself. Is that okay?
@@winnie7668 Humor is a gift from God. (Even though we don't know every little thing that makes Him laugh.) It helps so many people from being depressed too.
Stephen Colbert did a really interesting interview that echoes a lot of the points in this video. As a Catholic, he's made jokes about Catholicism, but he said one thing he will never joke about is the Eucharist because it's the true presence of Christ. He also references C.S. Lewis's views on humor in The Screwtape Letters. Really insightful stuff.
I stopped watching Family Guy for the said reason; Seth McFarlane and company make egregious jokes about Christ without remorse. Screenjunkies and Wisecrack on RUclips are also pushing their humor to a blasphemous line.
I did not allow that program you mentioned in my house, it was so cute my daughter would tell on her dad & I would say well you know what to do then. She would change the channel, or turn the TV off. 👏😀
Throughout my life, occasionally when I’m in deep doubt, God will speak to me in the most ironic humor. As in, once in adoration, consulting a friend about spiritual restlessness, the *exact* line from “Your Grace is Enough” (another friend had Christian contemporary playing on her phone) played as follows: “You bring rest to the sinner’s restless heart…” (paraphrased, it’s been awhile since I’ve heard the song) Or, at least, that’s the example that comes to mind when I think of God’s sense of humor. Coincidence? Maybe. God working hands-on? Most likely.
This video made me think of another topic Id love to see discussed in its own video: The commandment of Honor thy Father and Mother when your parents are/were emotionally abusive or toxic or even if you just never had a good relationship with them. I hear this brought up a lot and it also is a personal question. I even know of some parents who use that commandment to manipulate and guilt adult children. Would love to hear a response to this! Prayers for this wonderful ministry
I made a joke and I don’t know about it because I was joking with my friend and I said “Jesus if your here move the table” and now it’s made me anxious and I don’t know why but after that I think I felt like I messed the joke up
When you truly try to follow His plan for you, there will be a lot of things you dont understand at first and some that are just purely insanely funny. I think He has a great humor. We also have humor so it had come from Him.
fearing of and respecting God are worth so much more than a little bit of funny feeling we got from thoughtless humour. From now on I will be more selective and careful about those jokes and see where they are coming from. Father Mike, can you please do a video on how to handle when people around you (friends, acquaintances, coworkers) take God's name in vain? Thanks.
Silently pray. "May the Holy Name of God be blessed. Begone Satan!" I forget the source, but that is what I found recommended. But if you find yourself ending up wrathful in that, perhaps another means. Maybe just ask the Lord to show them the error of their way. Or wait until you may be alone in the evening and pray the Golden Arrow Prayer with reparation for what they said that day in mind.
Exactly Father, certain jokes aboutt parents are disrespectful such as weight issues. God has humor but be careful that we don't pull him off his throne.
I like this topic alot and was always wondering about it so, thank you so much for it! As someone in their mid-20's and in a world where most of my generation grew up with shows like Family Guy or TV humour that wrote really disrespectful jokes about God and Jesus I never really laughed at it and felt odd why others were. It made me doubt myself because I didn't want to be someone who ruins the party at all, but these jokes were always spoken with a layer of insult and disrespect, moreover people nowadays throw insults and mean words and get away with it by saying its a joke so many times. If its someone I am close to and we've already established a relationship then I would get it, but too often I see strangers just telling mean jokes as if I can tell whether they are joking or not on our first meet. So, thank you for this! Boundaries are always important as well as the context of the joke too. I donno if God jokes back at me but I'm pretty sure He does, there will be moments I will do things that are difficult in life and think about how God would advise me, and I feel like sometimes I keep making the same mistake and in my head all I pictured was God shaking His head and sighing, telling me how many times He had told me He loves me and will never leave me in a loving Father way that's just feeling like, 'My child, believe me. Have I ever lied? Why are you making it difficult for yourself?' It makes me laugh cause I can relate to that feeling before with people in my life xD It's weird but it pumps me up when I sort of got reminded by Him about His character and nature that is so obvious that I felt like 'How could I forgot about this?!'
Fr. Mike, it was a great pleasure to have seen you in our magazine. Your messages always keep me focused, so seeing your picture on the magazine actually made me read it with more enthusiasm. The Spirit of life SUPPLIES us with all joy through the love of Christ Jesus flowing out of us , and the laughter and happiness manifested becomes your shining light giving others the love you’ve received , to God be the glory.
Galatians 5:22-23
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
Know your Identity in Christ Jesus and keep your eyes on him , and you won’t sink Mathew 14 v 22 to 33.
Amen..well said!
Thanks Fr. Mike.
I agree with Father Mike, we cannot disrespect God or Heaven, it is forbidden to disrespect the Lrd in new testament and old testament
I am a proud Catholic but I find this joke funny: "Moses came back down the mountain and met his fellow jews and said 'Ive got good news and bad news. The good news is I got him down to 10, the bad news is adultery is still on there".
Agreed. Not funny whatsover. Offensive if anything.
😂😂🙏
😂😂😂😂
Thank you Fr.mike..God bless..
I think the best God/saints/catholic/jesus jokes are ones that have a basis in the true nature of God. The joke about the boats and helicopter in the flood for example define God's work in the world.
Also, jokes about Jesuits are fair game.
Well, I'm 90 percent sure there not catholic anymore anyway so...
idk
I always thought of that as more of an anecdote rather than a true joke.
One of my favorites
A very religious man was once caught in rising floodwaters. He climbed onto the roof of his house and trusted God to rescue him. A neighbour came by in a canoe and said, “The waters will soon be above your house. Hop in and we’ll paddle to safety.”
“No thanks” replied the religious man. “I’ve prayed to God and I’m sure he will save me”
A short time later the police came by in a boat. “The waters will soon be above your house. Hop in and we’ll take you to safety.”
“No thanks” replied the religious man. “I’ve prayed to God and I’m sure he will save me”
A little time later a rescue services helicopter hovered overhead, let down a rope ladder and said. “The waters will soon be above your house. Climb the ladder and we’ll fly you to safety.”
“No thanks” replied the religious man. “I’ve prayed to God and I’m sure he will save me”
All this time the floodwaters continued to rise, until soon they reached above the roof and the religious man drowned. When he arrived at heaven he demanded an audience with God. Ushered into God’s throne room he said, “Lord, why am I here in heaven? I prayed for you to save me, I trusted you to save me from that flood.”
“Yes you did my child” replied the Lord. “And I sent you a canoe, a boat and a helicopter. But you never got in.”
Thank you and godbless 🙏 👍🏻
I needed this, thank you! I was wondering about this for a long time.
So happy to see this subject come up! I've always wondered about it :)
Psalm 2: “He that sits in the Heavens shall laugh; the Lord shall have them in derision.”
Thank you Father Mike for clearing this up! It's good to know 🙏👍Amen
LoL.
Taking the name of the Lord you God in vane will not go unpunished.
Thank you Father Mike!!
If it’s meant in genuine love, and respectful humor, I feel like God will smile at it. ❤
Thank you father Mike,
you are a blessing to me !
When God was giving out Chins, I thought he said Gin, so I asked for a double..🤭😉
Matthew McConaughey impersonation...
Fr. Mike has helped my life so much. I look at things in a new and different way
Perfect Jesus humor is from Kinky Friedman and the Texas Jewboys
Yes.
Humor is a great way to convey a message.
Bojan!
@@RezaChity-G Yeeeeees?
Thanks Father Mike 💪
I like to think God has a sense of humor
Anonymous User trust me he does.
If we do he does
All emotions come from God. Amusement certainly was made by Him for us to experience and express our surprise at ironic or unexpected situations.
I read this question and your answer in the Catholic Spirit!
Our Lord was quoting a psalm.
As the saying goes, "There are no sad saints," we may not have seen the face of Jesus directly, but we can imagine what His smile might be like
I needed this video. I was very scrupulous after going through medevial scholastics
Of course!
Ha-ha yes of course. Humour is a good way to cope with difficult situations.
God has a great sense of humor. S. Padre Pio was his reflection and he loved to joke around.
Thank you i needed all of these videos.
Thank you, Father!
I stopped watching Family Guy for the said reason; Seth McFarlane and company make egregious jokes about Christ without remorse.
Screenjunkies and Wisecrack on RUclips are also pushing their humor to a blasphemous line.
It’s a joke, they don’t mean it offensively 🤦🏻♂️
Sub 2 Coach yes they do.
And College Humor is terrible, too.
I enjoy going to open mics and sending up my beloved church - using humor as a way to ease the pain of betrayal
I did not allow that program you mentioned in my house, it was so cute my daughter would tell on her dad & I would say well you know what to do then. She would change the channel, or turn the TV off. 👏😀
Thanks Father!
Thank you my father
Totally confirms what I had been thinking. Thank you!
Throughout my life, occasionally when I’m in deep doubt, God will speak to me in the most ironic humor. As in, once in adoration, consulting a friend about spiritual restlessness, the *exact* line from “Your Grace is Enough” (another friend had Christian contemporary playing on her phone) played as follows:
“You bring rest to the sinner’s restless heart…” (paraphrased, it’s been awhile since I’ve heard the song)
Or, at least, that’s the example that comes to mind when I think of God’s sense of humor.
Yes!!!!! Wonder what he'd say about that. Great question 👍
Begone Satan!"
I forget the source, but that is what I found recommended.
But if you find yourself ending up wrathful in that, perhaps another means. Maybe just ask the Lord to show them the error of their way. Or wait until you may be alone in the evening and pray the Golden Arrow Prayer with reparation for what they said that day in mind.
That Matthew McConaughey impression was lit
My view on this is its okay to laugh with God but not at him.
Yes and it's fine to laugh at ourselves: we could all do with a little more humility.
Thank u for this information Fr., God bless u! ☺🙏
That Mathew McConaghuey impression was on point.
Fr. Mike, it was a great pleasure to have seen you in our magazine. Your messages always keep me focused, so seeing your picture on the magazine actually made me read it with more enthusiasm. Not that I don't but this time it was a more connected. Thank you for your way of expressing love to God and thank you for your time in helping us thru questions we have. By the way the magazine's name is North Texas Catholic.
Laughing with him is always different than laughing at him.
