Welcome to Heavy Recovery with Steve!
I'm Steve - a Heavy Vehicle Recovery Driver from the South of England. I've been involved in recovery all my life, from a young age working in a family-owned car recovery business and acquiring the licences necessary to operate some of the largest vehicles on the road, to eventually working for some of the largest recovery firms in the UK.
I've set up this channel to provide insights into the world of recovery and whether you're here with the intent to step into the world of recovery or just interested in seeing the action - I hope you find thoroughly enjoy the videos!

Must be a nightmare breaking down abroad like the driver has. Was bad enough me popping a water hose on a van in Glasgow - was easily fixed on the spot but the sheer terror and panic that hit was something else.

Another great video Steve, I always look forward to them. I felt sorry for the driver but I guess he used to taking the unexpected in his stride.
I can remember breaking down in Spain in a hire car and that was stressful enough (vehicle was swapped by hire company) let alone trying to get a repair done in a foreign country.
A nice unit and spotless cab.
Hi Paul thanks for watching , driver told me he spends 2 months away from home travelling all over Europe in the truck , so seemed quite relaxed about the situation he was in.

I have a question regarding underreach designs. I've seen two different design out there.
The T-head with grabbing forks, which your trucks has, and a "wheel grabber" which gets a hold of the wheels and uses them as achors instead of the axle or other parts of the vehicle.
What are the pros and cons of each design? Why would someone use one over the other, and which one do you prefer?

Hi Zoltan thanks for watching , we tend to use lifting forks in the UK more so than wheel frames where the wheel sits into the frames.
The wheel frames we mainly use our for coaches with independent suspension that doesn't have a front beam axle to lift on.
Lifting forks i find a lot easier and quicker to use and less likely to ground the wheel frames out when going over speed ramps and slopes over here in UK.

Great job as always. Driver seemed like a nice guy, credit to both of you for being calm and professional about it all. A question if I may - what sort of percentage of jobs would you say you’re able to film on?
Thanks for watching , very small percentage i can really film in UK as most companies plaster there names and logos all over and easy identified with there coloured scheme . Was hoping to film at least 1 every 2 weeks but now need to find something bit different every time to hope make it worth watching.

How do European truck drivers contact vehicle recovery services in the UK?
Some contract or just wing it on the day?
Hi Graham , normally if under warranty the local dealer nearest to the breakdown will contact us threw there home dealer abroad.

I Gotta Say, its Pretty convenient that the trailer had TWO Electrical Connectors on it, so that you could leave the tractor connected, AND be able to operate the tractor's own Marker / Indicator / Brake lights as well via Backfeed from its connection to the trailer.
I'm surprised you don't plug into the trailer directly more often for the Electrics even if you need to disconnect the tractor from it.
For car drivers, I'd day that its less confusing to use the trailers own lights, vs the light board you have, especially because then the side indicators and side markers are also functional which helps us car drivers with seeing what's going on.
Also, I like how MAN made the tractor air connections as accessible as they were, sure they were under neath the nose of the trailer, but you didn't need to go diving under the hood, or get under the tractor to get at them, if only they were all that easy.
I do have one query though, Does your wrecker also have a reasonably high amperage 12v / 24v Power Connection on the back (Usually an Anderson SB Style plug) that you could connect onto tractors that also have such a connection to keep the towed tractor's battery topped up?
Might be useful for times when you need to keep the ignition powered on for various reasons, as well as for jump starting purposes (even if that means having to sit and wait 5-10 mins for enough charge to transfer to allow the stranded vehicle to start).
Thanks for watching and comments , i have a battery boost on board comes in handy to start vehicles with charging faults to get better access for loading.
Good job Steve,especially being a Ukrainian driver. Must be a nightmare.breaking down abroad. Used to run Spain on the coaches for a couple of years and thankfully never had a problem. Always give you a flash when I see you. Who worked that car transporter job on the M3? Scarey ride for the driver. Take care motorway jobs aren't the best.
Hi Neil thanks for watching , our company did get called to attend that job on M3 by Highways Agency but got cancelled on route as Police got involved and called there own contractors out.
Nice work and feel sorry for the driver breaking down in uk, would that have to be recovered back to Latvia if it can’t be repaired in the uk, be a hell of a drive lol
Hi Roy thanks for watching , Man dealer would want to fit new engine i would of thought but company will get it transported back home on low loader and rebuild engine themselves.
At least someone in Latvia will know what they are doing to repair it and most probably cheaper lol Not a lot of chance getting it repaired in the U/K from what i have seen of MAN Stealers in the pasted ??
You didn't tow that rig far but modern trucks are complicated bits of kit, good job Steve 👍

Really enjoy watching them :) Just wondering what the reason is behind you decoupling the red Airlines from the trailers and hooking up a direct Suzie from your truck, wouldn't the airline you put directly into the test point supply main air to the trailer between the airline from the unit?
Hi Callum , we have to still run a emergency red line to the trailer in case the unit becomes detached from wrecker in a accident and the brakes will come on the trailer stopping it rolling away.
@@HeavyRecoverywithSteve Hi Steve, thanks for replying! I see so the principle is behind the towing vehicle coming detached from you rather the trailer becoming detached from the unit. Would the same principle not happen between the wrecker and test point in the event of a detachment? That way if the trailer was to detach from the unit the trailer would brake, and if the vehicle on tow was to detach from the wrecker the main airline into the test point would snap braking the unit and trailer together?

I was just wondering if there is any reason when recovering a unit and trailer you use the light board rather than the trailer lights? Is there a reason or is it just personal preference? Thanks.
Hi Simon thanks for watching , just preference on day mate really , if been night i would of used electrical susie so would have had lights down the sides on the trailer as well. Good luck on job Simon glad you finding the videos of interest.

Guessing your not too preferential to wheel webs, feels like a better alternative to double picking those things if I were say.
Hi Sterling thanks for watching , when using wheel grids you still have to double lift sometimes , as engine sumps and suspension can be low and can be damage on boom. So you have to lift onto blocks and make wheel frames smaller so the truck wheels sit higher in frames giving you more clearance and allow for bouncing in travelling.

Hi thanks for watching , the forks need to be chained to the axle to stop any sideway movents when cornering and to stop the axle lifting out from the forks.
Do you drag the whole weight of the truck just from the front axle?

Would it be possible to just leave the truck in neutral and take it to next exit to find someone to pull the other half shaft out. Or does that risk the transmission to much

How do you find Milwaukee compared to Dewalt?
Hi Al thanks for watching , Milwaukee is 3/4 and only gun i really need , Dewalt is 1/2 and struggles with half shaft bolts over 24mm . Had couple of Dewalts and found batteries become loose on body of the gun after a time,
Is there a reason why you dont tow the truck in neutral ?
Thanks for watching , the drive line has to be disconnected to the gearbox to safeguard and potential damage whilst being recovered , by simply selecting neutral will not stop this.

Hi Simon thanks for watching , you get a few truck drivers move over but that's about it mate.
All cars are obliged by law to move over and slow down it is the law brought in last year to protect those who go out on recovery work i lost 4 mates whilst out on recovery jobs dam near got hot by cars on more than one occasion to the point where i had cameras on every corner of my truck to help the police prosecute
If only you could of gotten a lane shut your life would be so much easier
