Hello Steve. Thanks for recovering me that day, I needed that save on a friday afternoon. Awesome video, very insightful. What you dont see in the video, is how much of a nice guy Steve is. Very friendly and helpful. Absolute top man. Good luck with all your videos! See you down the road 👍
I have no idea how you guys do that job. You seriously have nerves of steal. Total respect for the service you are doing every day, both of you guys, Matt and Steve. Real heroes, both of you dudes!
Gawd, this brings back memories. My worst ever was going out to a double deck bus that had run out of fuel. Back in those days it wasn't quite as bad as now (early 2000s). It was on the hard shoulder of the M1 and here's me standing right on the 'rumble strip' for lane 1. I requested a lane closure or Highways/Police assistance but gave up waiting. That was not a pleasant experience and I poured in just a couple of gallons- enough to get to the services. Fortunately priming the good old Gardner took seconds and it was on its way, but the pouring of the fuel into the tank on the offside? Never, ever again.
Hi Derek thanks for sharing that mate , think we all been on jobs like that mate on reflecting back what our we doing out there putting our life on the edge.
@@HeavyRecoverywithSteve true. All I can add to that is that I'm glad I've not had to do some of the HGV stuff you've done. Full size wrecker, tractor unit and trailer? I take my hat off to you for that. Really superb videos, Steve. Naturally I've seen plenty of buses, but the wagons are new to me.
Much like the USA, the UK really needs a ‘slow down - move over’ law. I try my best to move over from the inside lane if I see anything stopped ahead. But this video really showed how bloody sketchy working these recoveries are with vehicles driving past! Fantastic work as usual Steve, and the roundabout manoeuvres were super impressive! 👏🏻
most of the EU countries have laws about it. Surprised the UK doesn't with all their excessive workplace safety laws - or they do and no one knows about it which is a problem with a lot of things in the UK
Agreed, for example here in the Netherlands they will close off the lane completely with digital signs above the road, and often also slow the other lines down.
Why? Most Countries work on the basis of having every single aspect of life written out with dos and don'ts. We don't. We have more general laws about safe driving (due care and attention etc) and these used to work well. The problem is that they are not enforced. You can bring in all the laws you like but if the training and enforcement isn't there, you're wasting your time. PS I have stood out on the hard shoulder with failed vehicles, so don't think I'm just dismissing this. Road safety is getting worse, but new laws are not the answer.
I’m impressed with the roundabout footage. I know those ones well, so impressed you managed the last one being that length. The first one is generous in width, but quite a deep bend too.
Oh my goodness that's frightening having to work on the shoulder lane like that. Good defensive posture there, but absolutely frightening that people don't slow down or move over. Great job with this and nice video.
wow i always had a praise for truck trivers getting their wagons around but the skill involved in the recovery of those wagons is something else !! even more appreciation for recovery drivers !
Shocking to see how many people who have space to move over from lane 1 into lane 2 to give you extra space just don't bother. Something I've always done. If there is some one broken down or vehicles on the hard shoulder then I move over to lane 2 if there is space to do so especially when I'm in the. Wagon. Take care and stay safe Steve
Thanks for taking us along on this recovery. Would be nice to see traffic move over to make it a bit safer for you and the driver. Here in the US, drivers must, by law, move over (or at least slow down) from the lane nearest a recovery or emergency vehicle. I was worried you'd have a long walk back to get the cones! Stay safe!
Thanks Steve, i dont think many people would realise how dangerous a job that you do. Inchs away from a live lane in some instances. And may i say that is very good driving, that cant be easy.
Thanks for watching, i normally do the same on 6x4 disconnect the prop shaft and strap it up out the way, otherwise your be looking at removing 2 half shafts.
Respect to you Steve as a driver who has been recovered a some 5 times by you guy's its not an easy job especially on dark nights and in the winter snow on the ground and you have to get underneath just a thought how about having a little collapsible trolley for the cones certainly save your energy such as in this video having to carry them back stay safe now.
Great video, love how even though you're obviously busy you still try and explain what's going on. Amazed how few people move over when lane 2 is obviously clear, I always move over when passing vehicles on the hard shoulder, should be law like most other countries.
I work on the m40 as ISU so I spend a lot of time on the hard shoulder it can be a scary place. but you dun what you cooed the only over thing you cooed do is call for traffic officer's to do a lane 1 block great vid and I mite see you at a RTC one day
Steve only recently found your channel and I have to say that the recovery on the motorway and so close to the 1st lane I take my hat off to you that is dangerous Love the videos thank you
Imagine doing that on Smart Motorway! I still find it hard to believe people don’t move over in the UK and find it acceptable to skim passed at 70+mph… On the continent people make the effort move over or slow down. It was nice to see some HGVs making an attempt though…
Where are the traffic officers when you need them. They should be blocking the lane for safety, or at least have a vehicle with flashing lights to make drivers aware, as there aren't any overhead gantry notifications on the M40. Great video Steve, enjoying them. Must admit, you're a lot quicker than Ron in the USA😂
Good morning Steve, many thanks again for these fantastic videos you make, just shows how much effort and care also risk you put yourself into when trying to sort these incidents out on duel carriage ways and motorways…. This shows us from your point of view how dangerous life can be, hope you enjoyed your bank holiday weekend unless you were working or on call…. Many thanks for showing how important we need guys like you on our roads. CHEERS Steve, take great care buddy

I had my brakes lock up when I was driving down the old A50 near Coalville on a Pall-Ex run down to Surrey. Was pretty scary as the truck just stopped dead as I was pulling away from a roundabout. I was only doing about 30mph at the time but a tipper nearly drove into the back of my trailer and obviously assumed I had just slammed on the brakes for no reason. The recovery guys came out and told me to drive it slowly to their yard in Coalville on the shunt valve. It turned out that one of the air lines under the trailer had ruptured. A few days later a similar thing happened with a truck stopping dead on the A1(M) in Yorkshire and another truck went straight into the back of it and the driver was killed.
man Steve they dont give you much slack here in my state michigan we have a law move over if you cant slow down they hand out tickets another great job stay safe
Awfully scary Steve....here in the Netherlands working like this is not allowed until things are made safer by the people that take care of road and traffic, in most cases one lane would be blocked with signs above the road.
Not to mock your kind, but you're probably by far the politest brit i've ever seen on the internet. Just a question, do you wear safety goggles at all? I understand they would probably be really annoying but with the work underneath vehicles and next to the motorway i bet you have a hazard of getting lots of debris in your eyes?
Hi thanks for watching and kind comments, yes do wear safety goggles sometimes when removing prop shafts from tippers that go off road, always sand and grit laying on the underside of truck.

Hi Keith, yes be safer on smart motorway, the Highways would close off lane put speed restriction in place too slow traffic passed me.Normally they would be on scene before me and have all restrictions in place be i arrive.

You really need something like what we have in Scotland: TRISS Trunk Road Incident Support System. Basically Highways Agency but less of the jumped up cop attitude! See them all over the trunk roads sitting behind broken down vehicles in there vans and huge LED signs telling you the issue ahead and to make space etc.
Another very interesting job Steve. Can I ask what the blue bar looking thing under your truck between the front and rear axles is for. Sorry if its a stupid question. Keep safe mate. Regards Jas
Hi Jason, blue bar you asking about is a tow pole or fixed bar used for towing when you may require the broken down vehicles to remain in contact with the road, dont use it much, thanks for asking.
hi steve you know better than me but you say the off side half shaft had 2 come out id have thought as long as 1 half shaft comes out either side there would not be cross pressure going threw the diff so the diff and gearbox would be fine
HI Stu , yes you correct mate either half shaft would disconnect drive to gearbox, but bit of bugger getting half shaft back in on diff lock side even when you previously engaged diff lock.If i was unable to tow it over to the side i think nearside half would be safer option rather than removing prop, thanks for comments.
As the truck has "only" lost air, and the engine runs ok (I assume) would it not ok to leave the truck engine running whilst being towed. This would ensure the gearbox is lubricated and avoid the need to remove the half shaft?
