    Herne Bay is under appreciated. A beautiful place for a day out. When the tide is low a flat, safe sandy area is exposed that stretches a mile from the pier towards Whitstable. Amazing to play on for families. Herne Bay has fantastic sunsets. Lots for young families entertainment.

    My Nan moved from Peckham down to Herne bay in the 70’s back then it was known as Hernia bay. Now it’s Hernebaydoss! Btw Canterbury council pulled a fast one when their jurisdiction moved to encompass Herne Bay.
    They nicked all of the stone slab paving that ran the length of the front and proceeded to put it round Canterbury Cathedral. What a cheek!

    • @jackryanmiller
      @jackryanmiller  Год назад +1

      Ha ha I had no idea about that! To be honest I didn’t realise Canterbury was THAT close to Herne Bay so I’m surprised it’s included in that district 🤣

    The structure out at sea, when you was stood at the end of the pier, used to be the head of the pier.
    It was initially weakened in WW2. The military blew up two sections of the bit in the middle (the connecting bit, which also used to have a tram line on) and added a Bailey bridge. This in attempt to improve sea defence.
    It was later destroyed in the 70’s and dismantled completely in 1980.
    There used to be a little cafe at the end as well.

    • @jackryanmiller
      @jackryanmiller  Год назад +1

      Ah thanks so much for your comment. That’s amazing - to think the pier originally went out that far ! Would’ve loved to see it back in the day. I’m glad the structure is still there

The pier was badly damaged by a ship colliding with it resulting in much of the pier being demolished leaving only the pier head seen in the video 😢

    3:36 That used to be the arcades. The games were fun, but both the owners were arrogant arses.
    In Bishopstone Glen the Fairy glen is still there. It's just off one of the paths, but it's more noticeable in autumn.
    6:09 People know not to walk in that area. It acts like quicksand. The fire station had to buy an Argocat just to rescue these idiots. I happened to be by the fire station waiting for a bus when their Argocat was first delivered. All of them were fighting like little kids for first dibs.
    7:20 Those beach huts are new. There was nothing there before.
    8:50 Those gardens are my go-to spot during lunch break if I'm working all day and it's not raining.
    9:36 That's the end of the original pierhead. The history of the pier is something else. It's worth googleing.
    The last I heard was a company in London expressing interest in doing paddle steamer day trips to Herne Bay pier if and when it gets restored. That just sounds so cool.
    11:51 £6 for small battered sausage and chips?! You were ripped off there. Where I go it's £3.70
