I'm an American that the chance to visit southern England. I found it magical. The cliffs of Dover were worth it all by themselves. As a history buff, there weren't enough hours in the day. Everything was awesome including the people. London, Portsmouth, Brighton, loved it all. One of the best trips I have ever had.
The 1st time I visited Dover was in the early 90s while on vacation from serving in the U.S. Army stationed in Germany. I bought a new Nissan Maxima and covered England and Ireland on one big Pub crawl. I recommend Tiddly · Fox Farm Brewery. Dover was the *best* place I have ever flown kites. I'd never flown a stunt kite in a smooth, strong, continuous wind like that before. I had just switched to a Prism kite that is particularly fast and was putting on a show for a woman and what I assume were her two children. I never got a chance to talk to them because, after a minute or two, a seagull decided to fly through _my_ flight zone and got tagged by like lines. I'd recently switched from nylon to Kevlar lines, and they almost cut that gull in half. A big puff of feathers, a squawk, and a woman running two crying kids to their car. Very memorable; I wonder if the kids still think of that; I'm positive that the woman does.

Southeast England is THE most perfect place to live in my opinion ♥It's near the beautiful beaches and calming seaside, while also being close to London :) The weather is great, the villages are beautiful and it has everything I could ask for all in 1. I can't wait to move there!
Thank you Rick, absolutely splendid. Only one point, the ' battle ' site at Battle, the open field, has pretty well been dismissed by recent archeology, which now places the actual battle site close to a roundabout on the outskirts of the town - interesting :)
Portsmouth is my hometown abd i love it here.. but he is right about some of the godawful post war architecture.... so much of Portsmouth was bombed... both my parents spent there adolecent years from age 14 to 20.. and grew up experiencing the bombing and frequent air raids and of course rationing.... both their fathers(my grandfathers) served in the Royal Navy and spent most of the war away on board ship... one of my grandfathers experienced serving on 2 different ships that were sunk by the Germans.. one in Scapa Flow and one in the Med.... in 1957 when i was 5.. i still recall areas of undeveloped demolished buildings that were old bomb sites..12 years after the war.... Portsmouth was always one of the poorest cities in the country.. was pretty much broke after the war.

One other thing, for those who may be interested, the ship ' Warrior ' was the first of a new navy, Victory was old navy, men often press ganged into service, terrible conditions and food. With Warrior, men applied for positions, they were well paid, uniforms were washed and cleaned and food was much superior, setting the tone for the modern navy as we know it today. If you have the opportunity, take a full tour around this fabulous ship, almost lost, but saved and restored just in time.

God bless you brother. Great to see you outside The Still and West pub in my home town of Portsmouth, UK. Your videos are some of the best travel guides online. Thanks. Love that guide's accent on the HMS Victory: proper Pompey accent.
After WW2 much of Europe had been bombed, and therefore required rebuilding “fast”; hence poorly executed post war architecture. So sad, but luckily it’s being replaced in many areas!
@mary hartsdale They want us like Rabbits in a box -- squeeze us all out of the countryside into Smart Cities and 'Re-Wild' the countryside including some farmland. At least with the 60s tower blocks there had to be a designated amount of free space around each block -- not any more -- they're just packing them in.
@@tamaracarter1836 Many of the hideous buildings of the 60’s and 70’s were not replacements from war time destruction but a deliberate attempt by politicians in league with architects to “modernise” the country. The results of course were a disaster. The good news is that a lot are now being replaced with better buildings though regrettably in some cases the replacements are not much better.

I just discovered my English heritage and want to explore these places.
Americans be like
@@chaden9498 Well before a certain division in the past, our history is very much their history too.
I can't blame them for being proud of our heritage. I am as well.
Bill, with the last name Jenkins, you have Welsh ancestry
Don't go too near to the edge of the cliffs, they crumble from time to time. The cliffs at Birling Gap underwent a large rearranging about 20 years ago. I used to live in Brighton four days a week ... I miss the walks along the front and the cafe that sells homemade Italian ice cream. Thank you for the documentary, happier times
Europe is rich of history and Greenery. I Love it.
Hope you n ur family women also like n love pakistani 🍌
Your books are so useful! I have used them several times on my trips to Europe. Love them and your shows. Thank you for doing what you do.
Southeast England is THE most perfect place to live in my opinion ♥It's near the beautiful beaches and calming seaside, while also being close to London :) The weather is great, the villages are beautiful and it has everything I could ask for all in 1. I can't wait to move there!
Really enjoy your shows. You make history a wonderful journey!
Thank you Rick, absolutely splendid. Only one point, the ' battle ' site at Battle, the open field, has pretty well been dismissed by recent archeology, which now places the actual battle site close to a roundabout on the outskirts of the town - interesting :)
Lovely scenery
Great weather
I love maritime history. I love Portsmouth, have been several times.
I'm Indian,I like to watch your all videos.... Feel like I am there....but .it's not possible.. really you r great , because making this kind of video... Thank you so much, keep healthy sir...🙏
If you ever come to london can show you the sights!

Rick, were really enjoying the travel through out Europe. I would love to see how individual citizens live in their towns and valleys. Thanks for taking us along. God bless! 😍😄
I will visit England this year ,so beautiful
James Brown thanks 😊 best wishes for 🇬🇧 from Japan
I was born and grew up in southeast England, I've also served my country and travelled to many locations across the world but for me you still can't beat the Kent countryside in Summer. I currently live in Humberside, and the northerners seem friendly enough 😉
Thank you for the wonderful travel logs of Great Britain!
Great show! Better than most on TV these days!😊👍
Dear Rick, thanks for this Beautiful Video. We visited in ouer Hollydays in the Year 2015 from July to August.A verry Amazing Land ❤I love it.👱♀️🏴🇩🇪🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻👋
One other thing, for those who may be interested, the ship ' Warrior ' was the first of a new navy, Victory was old navy, men often press ganged into service, terrible conditions and food. With Warrior, men applied for positions, they were well paid, uniforms were washed and cleaned and food was much superior, setting the tone for the modern navy as we know it today. If you have the opportunity, take a full tour around this fabulous ship, almost lost, but saved and restored just in time.
Rick, I love your shows and tours. Please consider tours/shows further east in Europe. Georgia , Armenia, the ‘Stan’s. Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Ukraine. Also thank you for making these “free” as I do have access to a PBS. Happy travels 🍻
And Russia, don't forget our European neigbours in Russia and the countries in the federation :)

Gracias por mostrarnos tan extraordinarios lugares y paisajes. La música, su relato y las imagenes te hacen viajar y desconectarte de donde te encuetres. Extraordinario y magnifico! !! Un millón. Un abrazo desde Chile
i remember having tea at the Royal pavallion wit h my mum, we were served on royal china it was amazng
I want to go here one day. So beautiful!!
God bless you brother. Great to see you outside The Still and West pub in my home town of Portsmouth, UK. Your videos are some of the best travel guides online. Thanks. Love that guide's accent on the HMS Victory: proper Pompey accent.
Binging Rick Steves since I'll never get to go to Europe now.
*EVERY* Modern Building is hideous. What are they thinking adding all those eye sores around all that beautiful historic architecture?
After WW2 much of Europe had been bombed, and therefore required rebuilding “fast”; hence poorly executed post war architecture. So sad, but luckily it’s being replaced in many areas!
They're ruining London with 100s of thousands of ugly apartments with no thought of town planning
This may sound crazy but its a United Nations plan
It's really funny how foreigners think it rains a lot in London, when that is literally the driest city in the UK!
The UK? London is one of the driest capitals in Europe. Only Athens and Madrid are significantly drier
Indeed! If they want rain, they should go to the west coast of Scotland, which holds the record for the rainiest place (as well as the least populous) in Europe.
@@EASYTIGER10 I think Norwich (the city) and Norfolk (county) are the driest place in the United Kingdom!
@@Stirlingshirecastle It´s a little known fact that Amsterdam receives far more rain than London and Paris not a lot less than London.
I was there a month ago,on a road trip with the family
Had 1 day of rain
And we totally loved the country and the people
I hope I do them justice with my video
Ots incredible how many people are blind to your own back yards!...love your own country because if you font others will...and your missing out! Uk is just fantastic!
Enjoyable travelogue of one of my favorite parts of Britain.
Some of the most beautiful countryside I know is in SE England
You've probably not been to Yorkshire.
Hi there Rick at this time when we can't travel, I've added 'as close to being there' virtual 4k walks, including many in Europe. I hope it'll give both you and your viewers an enjoyable leg stretch until the time comes when we can visit with our real legs. Thanks for all you do and keep 'em coming won't you?
South East of Britain a great ares to visit . Canterbury a marvellous Cathedral a spiritual place a must to visit great services to attend particularly on feast days. Ann Deakin 2ndMarch 2021.

This is a great video, as always!!
yes true.
This is my favorite Brighton. 👏👏👏The white lime coastal street of the Strait of Dover. I lived in London. I'm very happy. Thank you very much.👍👍👏👏💝from, japen in toyoko
I always love watching all your videos, it inspired me more to go to Europe. Hoping someday I would be able to visit this places you've been. Thank you.
Low key we know Rick loves England. We know Steve and we got your back pal! 👊🏻 lol.
I toured this area a couple of years ago. Rick's video showed me that I missed a few interesting spots. Thanks, much.
I can watch it endlessly!
I can't believe you were at Dover Castle, and never once mentioned the Louis Blériot memorial. The Frenchman was the first person to fly across the English channel, and crashed/landed just a few hundred metres away from the castle. He was also the inventor of car headlights and the first mono-plane.
Absolutely love it! Keep up the excellent work!!! -JMS
