That first bit about prepping your art in advance (having your water jars already filled with clean water, having the paint ready to go, paper at arms reach) that's actually been a huge game changer for me. I actually started doing that very thing about 2 months ago and it's been a huge improvement in motivation! Any time I have an urge to paint I've literally been by-passing the "ugh... I got to set up first, nah... I'll paint later"...my gear is ready to rock and roll! Highly recommended!
Yes, the tiredness happens to me all the time. I'll get all excited to sit down and draw or paint--get to my art space and suddenly I am so exhausted to the point the point that I need to take a nap. It so frustrating! Wish I knew why that happens. Because when I can get myself to paint, I really enjoy it.

Omg yes, the second one. I recently bought a set of gouache, and I have all my supplies and brushes ready, but whenever I think about the amount of work it takes to finish an entire painting I just get drained thinking about it so I keep putting it off for later :(

I discovered I really need the ability to just sit down and paint in the moment. What has helped me immensely for that is an aquabrush. Sometimes just the thought of going to get water in a jar was too much effort. Ha! But with my aquabrush, I can just start. No prep work at all. Thanks Mako for all these good tips and reminders!

I can relate to burnout in my daily life, thank you Mako for sharing this side on nurturing our creative process. Its one thing we know the proper techniques on how to paint/draw. It's another to have the courage and motivation to get started 🙌
This is exactly what I do and it has made a huge difference in my "down time" as well as the quality of my painting since I now paint / practice daily.
This is going to be long but I wanted to share to maybe give ideas to others. I work long hours as an accountant, when I come home I am brain dead and literally want to do nothing....
During the week I started this process, I created a binder and printed off a ton of reference photos onto Vellum paper for tracing. I use my tablet for a visual reference for color and detail..... anyhow each night I with come home, sit in front of the TV, drink my tea, and trace my outlines. I purchased a box of dry erase lapboards with grids (25 for $20) but obviously this isn't necessary so that I can pretape my outlines to the boards so they are ready to go. I then purchased an old car console ($9 new) because it has cup holders. You can make something similar by gluing or nailing things together to hold your water cups and palette.
I can set it on my console on the couch or bed and it just doesn't move and spill my water PLUS it has the center part where I can put a cup for my brushes and tins with my paints.
This makes it possible for me to be creative every day without having to put everything together to paint
I can't tell how much I can relate to this. This is a video that should be pinned to the boards of all working mothers everywhere

The other thing I struggle with is knowing I'll get into it. 8pm? TIME TO PAINT! Then it's 2am and I have to leave for work in five hours. So I'll get up EARLY to paint. 4AM! TIME TO PAINT! Then I'm late for work. Even if I manage to stop painting at a reasonable hour to go to bed, I'm still wired for the next several hours on "Creativity Juice" 😄

Thank you for all those precious tips, Mako. I'm a school teacher and, as school begins every September, I have to move to another town to reach my workplace. School takes all my time and sometimes I feel very tired. Slowly I'm getting used to this life and, year after year, I feel less tired. I'm trying to keep drawing during this time and never forget to bring my sketchbook with me. Now I'm more determined to keep doing what I love and find time for myself and my art!

the "painting kit" suggestion is exactly what has worked for me working from home for the past six months! I used to focus mostly on acrylic painting, but it is messy and requires a ton of space. But then I got a small travel watercolor kit, and cut up a ton of 4x6 paper cards, and that made it so much easier to be regular at practicing my artwork. Thank's for the list Mako!!
