    Great, clear instructions for beginning quilters, My first time watching your channel. I certainly will recommend your channel to her. We live about 150 miles apart, and things always seem so hectic when we visit. Going down for a few days for Easter. Hopefully she will be able to give the four patch a try over the next few weeks. Thanks,Cheryl for your easy and patient instructions.

    If you prewash and then use starch when pressing it makes materials easier to work with. Great video! But I almost had a heart attack when you said to throw away the scrap, lol

    Thank you for your video and easy to follow instructions. How many 4-patches do I need for a single size quilt.

    • @TheSewingRoomChannel
      @TheSewingRoomChannel  2 года назад +1

      Measure the size of your current bed cover. Divide the width by the size of the 4-patch block. that will tell you how many blocks to make in each row. Then divide the length of your current bed cover by the size of your 4-patch. This will tell you how many rows to make. For the total number of 4-patch blocks to make multiply the number of blocks in each row times the number of rows. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching, and happy sewing. 😍

    What are your thoughts on washing fabric before using material for a quilt?

    • @TheSewingRoomChannel
      @TheSewingRoomChannel  6 лет назад +2

      Hi Melissa. Every quilter has their own thoughts on this. I don't always wash my fabrics first before cutting. But, if you are using very dark fabrics in your quilt, there is a greater risk for the fabric dye to run into the lighter colors. I had this happen --- so, I now wash all the dark fabrics before I use them. Happy sewing.

      I always wash materials first in case of shrinkage. Then I iron with starch. It makes them a little stiffer and easier to handle .

  • @gailjeffmoore933
    @gailjeffmoore933 6 лет назад

    I have a question,..do you prewash your material from fat quarters first? thank you, GAIL

    • @TheSewingRoomChannel
      @TheSewingRoomChannel  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Gail & Jeff. That is a good question. Technically you should because if the fabric is going to be used in a project that will be washed later it might shrink. The problem with prewashing fat quarters is you would have to do a zigzag stitch around the 4 sides to prevent the fabric from unraveling during the wash cycle. I take the risk of not prewashing my fat quarters. Happy sewing.

    Hi Sherrill thank you for this and can you do this for a four patch that measures five inches

    • @TheSewingRoomChannel
      @TheSewingRoomChannel  2 года назад

      Hi Cheryl. Divide 5" by 2, and then add 1/2" to to that measurement. That is how wide your strips should be cut. Merry Christmas. Thanks for watching, and happy sewing. 😍

    "Go ahead and throw that away"...What? Nooooooooooooo!! Great tutorial except the throwing away part. So much can be done with the scraps, strips, extra, etc! :)

    • @lilpeachydreamerster
      @lilpeachydreamerster 4 года назад

      I read some of the comments before watching the video, and when I got to that part, I laughed so hard. That's a lot of fabric to just throw away! That's a border strip, or another 2.5" strip. Could definitely be cut for a scrap quilt or turned into bias. The possibilities are endless.
