I am just trying to set up a newly acquired Juki machine and nz made swiftquilter frame. Until now I have managed with an ordinary Janome machine . Now looking foreward to greater production with no crawling round the floor to pin things. Also revamping tidying and organising sewing room ,so this is very helpful. My material comes from thrift shops , including pure Egyptian cotton sheets for three to five dollars. My poor linen cupboard is bursting at the seams !!!! Hahaha . Hoarder with a purpose !!!! Oh boy, you will be amazed at how much easier and faster it is to quilt on a frame! Be sure to watch my "How to Load All Three Layers" ...it's a full length video of Saturdays with SederQuilts, and full of wonderful info ... We show several options for different frames, including a Juki on a Grace frame.
You might also enjoy watching my "How to Make a Quilt Design Wall" ... I recently saw the option of fusing CherrywoodHandDyedFabric to a door... it makes a Beautiful Art Statement when not in use, and is a fabulous little design space... I bet a soft fuzzy flannel sheet would fuse nicely to a door, too... I kinda sorta prefer having lines or grids (plaid gives lots of measurement options, for laying out blocks... but a solid doesn't distract from the creative design process) ... Either way, using a Design Door would be a great use of untapped space! I'll have to experiment and let you all know my helpful hints for that process!
And then, to Efficiently Piece your Blocks Together... my "CLOTHESLINING" class at SederQuilts.com is very useful... it saves time and space (Stack & Label first, then Sew like Crazy Accurate)... and eliminates the Twisty Turny Oopsies... it was a game changer for my piecing productivity!

Brenda sews those darling blocks by machine. I think she has a bag of scraps, a small pressing board, and a small cutting table, all efficiently placed by her machine. Thanks for watching and commenting!

thank you so much for your detailed cutting instructions. I usually err in the cutting and it really messes things up. It takes me days to cut a quilt because I have to be exact, exact, exact. It's a relief to get cutting instructions that demonstrates why I go wrong. Also I don't like wasting fabric. Bless you.

I like using a weight on the far end of my ruler. Helps a ton!
🌸Yes! I agree! A weight is sooo helpful to keep the ruler from moving! 🏋️♀️ I sometimes even lift the weight up and down a few times 💪... waaaay more than I ever did when I thought I might use them for exercise!😉
I use an old cast iron as a weight, my cutting did improve

Your rulers cost & what material yours table top? Mine is glass table top.
Please give some information about quilting tools .I have domestic sewing machine . Please
I'm a two-ruler cutter myself~ I find that it gives really good stability to ensure that the ruler edge that you are using to cut is completely lined up with the edge (and isn't veering). Still my go to method.....But I did swing for the Creative Grids Stripology XL ruler, and it is a game changer if you have strip intensive projects. It saved me a ton of time, and is very accurate. The XL also has the squares incorporate for squaring up blocks.Thank you for your video!

I like to cut 2 ×10 " squares, 4 ×5" squares and whatever else comes. 10" squares can be cut into 4 ×5", 8 bricks, or 9 ×3" or 16 ×2 1/2" squares later. You can also cur them in 1/2 for larger pieces. You can always cut them down later, can't put it back on. 5" can be cut in half or quertered too, depending on your choice. I live in Aussie, so our fat q's are slightly larger, and we can sometimes get 3" strips along the edge.

I rarely cut my scraps “just for the sake of cutting them down”… But I do have several styles of quilts that use 2 1/2 inch Squares or 5 inch Squares… So yes, I like to cut scraps (for those quilts) into 5 inch squares as much as possible, because I concur with you, you can always cut them down smaller later! 🌸Thanks for watching SederQuilts! When we buy the fat quarters are we supposed to wash them first? Just trying to get myself psyched up to start a simple quilt. There’s so much I don’t know.
🌸Excellent question! No. You do NOT need to prewash for quilting.
If most of your fabric for the quilt is already prewashed (recycled clothes, red fabrics that might bleed, or stinky for some reason...) you might also want to prewash “yardage” (new fabric that is a yard or more)...
But No, you do not need to prewash for quilting
Many of us use pre-cuts now (5” squares, 10” squares, or fat quarters) and you certainly don’t want to pre wash those
If you mainly SEW or make CLOTHING, then yes, you want to prewash yardage before cutting out pattern, so it doesn’t shrink after you have it all sewn together.
Cherrywood hand dyed fabric is ALREADY prewashed eight times during the process of adding their yummy colors to it... and many people use it to make clothing.

I have watched umteen videos and have never seen anyone use two rulers to cut anything. I have used two rulers by somewhat an accident. I found that with one ruler the cut can be on the left and I am right handed. This makes an accurate cut awkward and allows slippage. I needed to make the cuts easier, more safe and more accurate. The two rulers allow this. Thanks for showing me that using two rulers is sometimes the way to go.

Paola Jo, thank you so much for your video - I loved it and your uniqueness, My absolute best friend has latex allergy which has curtailed her life so much even going to the doctor is dangerous never mind a hospital! However, as for me, I'm not a very experienced quilter (have oodles of books and going short-sighted watching videos) I DID appreciate how you explained cutting fat quarters. I found your video while searching for the most efficient way to cut fat quarters into 2 1/2" strips. As you were cutting 5" squares I was desperately trying to work out how many 2 1/2" squares I could get from a fat quarter :-) I was scribbling madly while trying to watch. I bought three FQ and need to make 40 x 2 1/2" three strip sets and was trying to see if I have to buy more. They arrived this morning in the post and, if I won't have enough fabric, I will have to phone the shop to try and order three more before they are gone. I live in Dublin, Ireland, and it is so difficult to get supplies; for a capital city we don't have a quilt shop, just a few small stockists (like home businesses). If I order from the UK postage is bad enough, but it's impossible to order from the US as it would put fabric out of my price range altogether, hence my search for efficient frugality!! Again, thank you so much for giving so much information besides cutting, I really appreciate it and have hit the subscribe button, bell and thumbs up. Best wishes from my part of the world. Sorry for the long comment.

Great! I actually keep those throw away strips to tie together my jelly rolls. I hate waste. 😊
I save selvages, too, if large enough to serve as "twill tape" when a seam needs stabilizing. (A shoulder seam, for example.) As long as the seam is hidden, in the finished garment, I'd rather use what I have, than to toss same and buy another equivalent in function. Plus: Often those bits and pieces are large enough to use for testing purposes, such as best stitch length, adjusting tension. Use for leaders, when needed, to start a seam. Stack works well for "seam jumpers" as in sewing over thick seams in denim. Easy to keep some in a Cool Whip container (another re-purpose, with lid, item). ✔👍

I have several huge cutting mats... from Joannes ... and flipped over... so I can still kinda sorta see the lines, but prefer to go by the RULERS, instead of cutting trenches in the same mat lines all the time (ask me how I know that ruins your mat quickly😳😬😉). Donna Bailey 🌸I apologize for my “much too short” answer! 🥰We have a new grand baby and I was distracted.
😎MrTallDarkHandsome&Helpful made my cutting tables from old church office doors and 2x4s, then we put a huge cutting mat on top (36x70). He trimmed one edge off to fit perfectly, and rounded all the corners and edges slightly, (even rounded and sanded the wood corners) to not catch or snag fabric.
🙃I prefer the mat to be wrong side up, so I don’t wear out the same exact line all the time. You can still see through it enough to line up the straight edge, but I “measure” with the rulers 📐or a metal construction tape. (Cutting mats can warp and are not always exactly the same as the other measuring tools.)
🔄I often rotate fabrics a bit, too, so the cut marks are more random and we don’t end up getting stuck in a rut on the mat that way!🤓

tuwanda37 🌸🥰🤗🥰🌸Thank you! I’ve had all three of these pieces of clothing for about a decade... they are so comfy and practical for me...
💗The solid gray vest with huge gathered pockets was an expensive purchase from a cute little specialty shop, but goes with nearly everything in my wardrobe, so it has worked out to be a penny per wearing! It’s a rayon knit paperweight T-shirt fabric... washes beautifully, never shows wrinkles, doesn’t add any weight or pressure to my neck... and can be tied closed, or worn inside out (pocket side in) for a changed up look. I plan to make some of these in other colors!
👗The black&white paisley dress is also rayon... it’s a comfy loose version of a “babydoll” sundress, with adjustable straps, and a gathered ruffled bottom edge... the neckline is scooped in front, and straight in back (with a bit of covered elastic). I have about 6 of these in various colors! I think LORI found these at Target years ago... works great with leggings and a turtleneck, or over a long slender t-shirt dress, or alone as a comfy sundress on a hot humid day... and it’s perfect under my vests and cardigans... or to add just a ruffled skirt look under a plain T-shirt.
🧣The pink rayon scarf was probably also purchased at Target. Again, I have several colors of this style, but was very disappointed that some get staticky or scratchy and don’t drape as nicely as this one.
😷With all my allergies and sensitivities, I’ve used these long loose layers for years to cover my nose/mouth... or used a corner of them to open doors, (tie one knot to assign a constant clean corner vs dirty corner... and wash them after each use)
(👩⚕️As a dental hygienist for 30 years, I had the habit of always using my right pockets as clean storage and left pockets as dirty storage.)

Just found your channel. My biggest pet peeve is having to keep buy blades too. I love a super sharp blade that glides through like butter. You mentioned that you sharpen yours. Can you provide a link to where you buy the tool you use. I would love to have one.

Hi loved your video, I have fibromyalgia and sensitivities to smell too. I would love to know what the board is you were ironing on. It looks much easier than the usual ironising board.
My first quilt lesson was with a nurse who told us there were many toes cut off from rotary cutter accidents, please make sure you Close the rotary cutter when you put down, a good habit to get into.
I have seen people sew the selvedges cut off for book quilts as the spine of the book.
Scraps can be used to stuff things with we came up with in our group door sausages that keep the wind out.
Have subscribed and hope to check out more of your videos. I've been quilting for awhile and have to every now and then get back to basics again.
Jodie McNamara 🌸Thanks for asking! 😎MrTallDarkHandsome&Helpful made my huge cutting tables from old church office doors, AND he built my huge ironing board! 🤔I should ask him what kind of wood he used (not regular plywood... more of a pressed partical board, but not stinky)... it’s 30x59 inches... wider than width of fabric for most bolts! So I can almost fit a full yard of fabric on there at one time! I can press most of a two yard cut in one fell swoop! he rounded the corners, and added three small but sturdy side boards underneath to fit securely around my biggest regular ironing board... then we added three layers of Hobbs Heirloom batting. We’ve covered it with a fresh layer of fabric every so often... an old cotton sheet, super smooth chintz, old white cotton tablecloth, a nice striped quilting cotton... it’s due for a new layer again. We use a staple gun most of the time... but sometimes the staples bend too easily...so he adds some fancy fencing staples in a few spots. I’ve tried thumb tacks, too... and upholstery tacks. Recently we moved it onto a sturdy rolling cart. 🤓

I wash all of my fabrics (except pre-cuts) as soon as I get them. Then I give them a good steam-iron press. (Then they're put away until I can get to them!!) I have allergies, too, and it makes it more "pleasant" working with them after they've been washed!
Joanne Donovan 🤓 Excellent idea! Washing and pressing all fabric right away is a very good habit! I used to do that, too, especially when I sewed mainly garments. 😉I would serge or zig zag the cut edges before washing, so they would not ravel into a knotty mess. It is not attached with suction cups... there are actually a couple sets of holes (left handed or right handed) to screw the handle in place, and when you press down on it, Pins poke through those holes, through the fabric, and into the cutting mat to hold things beautifully (looks like something designed for spy Maxwell Smart, the man from UNCLE😎). Sadly, these wonderful handled rulers are no longer available anywhere. 😢 I have two other short tutorials🎥 (Quick Tip Tuesday videos) about cutting with two rulers you may enjoy! 🌸Absolutely!!! There are Oodles of Good Options... and everyone has their own preferences... but yes ma’am, you may certainly cut up old clothes for fabric!
🥰100% cotton is usually best for quilts.
👗Thin, or delicate, or stretchy fabrics are easier to use if you add an iron on stabilizer (interface or adhesive) Pelion 101SF is excellent, Mistyfuse is fabulous for appliquéing those fabrics onto stronger fabric.
✅Heavy or thick fabric (sweatshirts or denim) are also usable, but the seams get bulky and can be difficult to sew across or quilt through the seams.

Can you let me know what kind of sharpener to use to sharpen my blades, thank you so much and enjoying your video. This was from May 25 2018 cutting fat quarters. Its hard to find a good spray bottle, the lids are cheap and fall off, I get so frustrated.
Donna - if you ever use Febreze, keep the empty spray bottles. Their spray attachment is perhaps the best one available. The empties from window cleaner fall apart a lot faster, but I use those until I use up the Febreze.
I saw a video with an awesome spray bottle. They got it at a hair supply store. I’m going to check that out now that you reminded me.

Naomi -- whatever works! I just happened to have a Febreze bottle and noticed how sturdy it was, so am saving it for dampening fabrics. I'm simply one of those "re-users" of anything not broken. :) Sometimes cheap, in other words.

We started filming a great little tutorial about the sharpener I use, and looked into carrying them… Being a bit of a blended “perfectionist and procrastinator” with a healthy scoop of oodles of good options popping into my head (and misplacing my lists) …. Oh dear! It’s still on several of my lists of videos to make!
I don’t remember the brand name of the sharpener… it’s a green round, two sided circle with a coarse and fine option…. And then a two pieced handle that screws together to hold the rotary blade. It must be 40-50 years old… I’ve had it forever!

I love these huge mats available at JoAnns (wait for a good sale or coupon... they usually are about $100) They stay put quite well. 😉I keep import paper patterns or notes under mine. I use the backside first ... and eventually turn it rightside up. (See my previous comments)🌸Enjoy!🤓
I use a ironing formula that gives the fabric the feel and look as if you starched. Take wrinkles, lines and created lines where you do want them.
1 1/2 cup of water mixed with 1/2 of plain white vinegar(not the cooking kind). It’s usually in the cleaning products at Walmart.

Oooo, there's definitely Scot in your make up flower, as i absolutely hate excess waste in ANYTHING. I do all sorts of crafts and have done all my life because of a wonderful lady called Mum. She taught my brother Jim and I everything that she knew in crafting, but she was frugal as you put it with all resources. Me, i'm just a miserable Scot who hates putting anything in the bin. At the moment i have been card making and i keep ALL bits of matching card for that just in case scenario that some of us know about and quite often i was right in keeping it, although it drives my husband nuts. I need a she shed that's all mine that i can go out and play in, making a mess without someone narking about the place being untidy. I do tidy up my crafty diningroom, but i prefer playing as it's a lot more fun. I have had fun listening to you as you went thru your process and oh how i can relate to the things that you said. But... the handle has two retracted pins that stick through the fabric into the cutting mat when you push down on the handle🤓 it’s the bomb! SederQuilts - It seems that you find the handle on the ruler the most useful, if my opinion is correct. Have you ever considered making your own handled ruler? Why not buy the suction cup "handle" that contractors use to handle installation of mirrors? You can find those gizmos on Amazon. That way, you can unhook that handle and transfer it to another ruler when necessary. Here is a description of the thingy: The cheaper ones are about $12 --- Useful - This handy Double Handle suction cup lifter can firmly stick to any clean non-porous flat surface, an ideal tool for lifting and moving glass, sheet metal, granite, furniture, home appliances and so on. Two questions....Is your cutting mat turned with the wrong side facing up? If so, what is your reasoning for that? Thanks in advance for your response.
Cheryl Taylor 🤓Good eye! Yes it is! There are several reasons... (and several mats😉) My first two cutting mats wore out...
🌸I had 6.5” repeats marked in one color, 10.5” repeats marked in another color...(our church ladies use those sized blocks) I worked out of town full time and couldn’t attend the Quilting time, so I cut LOTS of squares , and eventually cut all the way through the mat in those main tracks.
🤓Then I moved those marks over to a new starting spot... and wore through those tracks, too.
So I flipped that mat over on one table and bought a new mat.
🤔Then Marcia Stephens told me to not trust the mat markings, Always Trust Your Ruler Markings; and Don’t Cut On The Lines All The Time... it creates trenches and inaccurate cuts... Marcia recommended cutting at all sorts of different angles on the mat, whenever possible, to increase the life of the mat... just trust the hard ruler and a metal construct tape measure.
The next reason is NOT ALL RULERS AND MATS ARE MARKED EXACTLY THE SAME. So be sure your ruler and mat are marked equally.
Mats can warp. They melt a twitch from hot things (tell me you never set the hot or still warm iron on there while cleaning up!) or from sun ; or they bend while standing behind the hutch next to a heat vent, etc.

Seder Quilts Makes a lot of sense to me. Especially the part about cutting right through the mat!! LOL That would take tons of cutting that an average quilter wouldn't be doing. I've also heard not to trust the lines on the mat. Don't remember who said that, but I do use one of my mats in the "up side down" position for squaring blocks, primarily because I find the lines too confusing and they definitely are not accurate. Cheryl Taylor yeaaay! I’m glad it made sense. My earlier cutting table was huge and low, I would hold the ruler w my knee... I probably used waaay too much pressure cuz I was too frugal to replace blades often enough. hey Paula can you use fat quarters to make your cross quilt with maybe use a rainbow color fat quarter bundle or two with light to dark fabrics and cut them like you are doing here in this video

Consider cutting first the 2.5 inch strip and then cutting the 5 inch strips the other way. Reason for that.., you get long 2.5 strips to cut further in different sizes or use them for binding.

@@damarisrempel9147 ❤It was a beautiful wedding gift… many shades of white on white delicate prints… snowballs and sashes… I did custom LongArm quilting on it… fancy digital feathers (AnneBrightDesigns) in the rectangles and triangles… then hand guided “LoveNotes” in many of the “circles”, with digital floral wreaths in some circles, and then some custom heart wreaths (digitally modified in Art&Stitch with some guidance from Marilyn @ KKsStudio) … the quilt turned out lovely!

Sheri Sterling yes there are 5” rulers available; and MSQC did offer the Olpfa no slip handle ruler (pins push down to hold fabric in place) at one time. But they are out of stock and no longer available. I believe the Olipfa company is no longer in business.
...and thin strips at the end of cutting the F1/4 can be used for string quilts...so keep 'em!
What about washed?
🌸Uffdah!! I do prewash fat quarters if they smell musty, or if they are not soft (some cheap fabrics have lots of starch). The problem is they SHRINK, and sometimes get WONKY, and might RAVEL quite a bit... so all the more reason to iron them nicely!🤗🥰🤗🥰🤗
What attracted me to your presentation is using the Fats
🌸Fat Quarters are a wonderful way to get a good mix of fabric without having to wait for the clerk to cut 9” strips off yardage!! Just look through the Oodles of beautifully folded fat quarters on display and get a nice selection!! 🌸
I forgot to mention that I always "overcast" the non-salvage edges before I wash the fabrics! (It's similar to serging, but nothing is cut off. My Janome has that stitch.)

But a straight cut 2.5 does not give you “bias” binding.
TRUE!! If you want to use Straight Cut binding, be sure to cut Width of Fabric, there is a little bit of stitch there... Do Not cut Parallel to the Salvage edges, there is NO stretch that way.
Bias Binding is cut at a 45 degree angle to the Salvage... that has the Most stretch.

FatQuarters purchased in U.S. are different measurement than Canadian fat quarters so be careful when following a pattern that calls for fat quarters...Canadian metre is 36".....a U.S. yard is 39"....so 18" and 19.5" would be the fatquarters measurements...
D H good point... the USA and Canadian measurements are different... a US yard is 36 inches, so half a yard is 18”... a Canadian meter is 39 inches, half a meter is 19.5”... Width of fabric varies, usually 40-42” wide for a regular bolt, (even though many of us grew up calling them 45” bolts of fabric.) 🌸

Rulers are not all the same. I always use the same ruler to cut a quilt.
