I belong to a running club and we run 10 to 12 races every year. I signed up for an 8 mile run this year that wasn't part of the club. It was hands down the most emotional run I've ever done. Finish Liza's run. Liza was a mother, teacher and avid runner. She was running her home training route and was abducted and murdered. We met up at 4am on a Monday morning and finished her run. Everyone should be able to go for a run, wear what you want and feel free from fear. My hat is off to you.

I've been harassed on my runs and it's mortifying
A lot of guys are like "just tell them to f off" or to flip them off, but pretty much every woman knows that it could lead to a violent situation where we're bound to lose
It steals our joy, some of it is hard to forget because it intrudes on our private space and our peace
I have a lot of male friends who support my running and who would never act like that towards anyone
We need to stick together and combat the culture of harassing women, telling men who do it that it's making women feel unsafe and that it's not just "a joke"

One of my favourite videos all year.
You were all outstanding, but it's the stories behind it that do it for me. They just have you nodding along because it's so easy to relate to the being afraid of the dark, or the lack of access to facilities, the harassment.
You've highlighted so many important things whilst doing something difficult at the same time. This is feminism in action - showcasing how women can support women whilst opening important conversations at the same time.

Hands down my favourite RC video to date! Such a great achievement and the stories that came along with it. On my last run at night, a car passed me 5 times within 20 minutes and sped up each time, I’m sure to intimidate me. I’m scared to run at night again. It only takes one experience to ruin it. Thanks for a great video.

I cried 🥹 loved it! I still remember to this day when I was running in broad daylight and a group of lads shouted “check out the a*se on that” and that was 6 years ago. These things stay with you. I truly hope things will change x

Ahh, Wonderful Women, thank you so much for this video! First congratulations on your epic run, but second, thank you so much for talking about all of that stuff in your own voices. I can't tell you how long I've been searching for a video just like this. I also feel so much less alone after hearing you tell your own stories. I'm a solo runner (not many running groups where I am) and often need to run in the dark due to work, and winter coming in. It might seem odd that that voices of people I've never met can make me feel like my experiences, doubts and feelings about being a woman runner are valid, but you have. Thank you for being wonderful, and for being honest.

This was an amazing video for multiple reasons. As women we have this joint understanding and experience of the world and I think it unites us in a way. Although men likely cannot completely understand this experience it still means a lot to have those that do their best to help us feel safe. I was running along a path one afternoon with nobody in sight in either direction except a man walking towards me. The path was very wide and we would have passed each other easily, but he instead chose to step a fair few metres off the path before I got to him to add distance between us, I'm assuming to help me feel at ease/show he wasn't threatening. It's small, but the gesture meant a lot

Thank you for an amazing video. I always enjoy these, but I didn’t anticipate the stories shared between the running. So good to hear these experiences and as a male runner it was good for me to learn how others feel. I don’t enjoy running at night myself, but I don’t have to think of the fraction of what is talked about here.

This is such a wonderful video. I loved that everyone got a segment. It was also nice to see everyone cheer each other on while tackling quite a difficult challenge. There was so much joy in a lot of the video while also speaking about the challenges of running and running as a woman especially. The honesty about safety, fear, injury, was something I quite appreciated. Also, love the diversity in everyone's experiences and backgrounds. Personally, the fact that Kalia was there was great. I was inspired and loved all of you but as an Asian woman, I appreciated that.

Thankyou SO much for sharing your stories, & for shedding more light on the issues so many women, if not all women face in running (& sport for that matter).🙏🏼 Where I am, it’s rare for me to get even just a couple days of running in without being honked at, yelled at, cat called, jeered etc. I’ve had to change up my routes cause I had a creeper show up on a route that I’d been doing (obviously too) regularly a couple months back. As you said it so well Sarah “we just want to go for a run”.
Not sure what the solution is, but I would hope that with more of us talking about these things, it will eventually change. I related 1 of my experiences to a fellow male runner recently & he was oblivious to this sort of stuff. Of course, he hasn’t had any of the negative experiences I’ve had, & we run in the exact SAME neighbourhood, on the same routes. He was surprised, shocked & horrified.

This totally got me and I hope it highlights to male identifying people of the things we need to think about / consider just to go for a run, I’m always lit up like a Christmas tree in the dark and only ever wear my shokz headphones. And not just running in everyday life too. I never wear more than one earbud in public or my shokz and I hate it when I’m in a taxi and the driver asks me a question about the route when I’m somewhere new showing that you don’t know your surroundings is very anxiety inducing for me too

Quite easily the best Running Channel video so far.
Apart from the obvious fantastic challenge, it was well filmed and very thought provoking.
It’s such a shame that women in sport face so many barriers when all they want to do is train and enjoy themselves.

  • @jennierayner2152

I live in Australia was was talking to my brother - who also runs - about how to keep up training through summer....he's a shift worker and he'll knock off at, like, 11pm, and then go for a run, he's like "just train at night" and could not understand why I wouldn't want to do that. I hate that we even have to think about it and what really sucks is knowing that, if something did happen to me, everyone would be like "well why was she out running alone, surely she knows that's not safe???"
Thankyou for this video and to all of you for sharing your stories, and congratulations on an epic achievement...Hadrian's Wall and all it's challenges, no match for five women on a mission!

It took me a while to watch this video because I wanted to spare a special time to watch it and I'm glad I did. Congratulations on completing the challenge, you all rocked it!!! It made me really emotional, specially when you talked about the strugles that we face everytime we decide to go for a run, a disgusting comment, honk or action, as Sarah said, can affect you for days, weeks, months, years or maybe forever, and if you ask, 99% (if not 100%) of women have sadly experienced it.
Once again, suuuuper congratulations to Jess, Sarah, Mae, Sophie and Kalia!! You all did amazing and deserved a well deserved rest! Also, congratulations to all the team that gave them support during the challenge and helped film and edit it beautifully!

Ok it means more than you can imagine to talk about the cat calling when running. It doesn't make sense but to me whenever anyone "calls out" to me when running i get so self conscious thinking I'm doing something embarrassing. It's not necessarily logical but it so messes with my mentality before leaving on runs, especially in areas where I'm less comfortable (usually based on less experience in an area where i'm running). Besides the motivation for distance and pace this video provided, I feel like it's granted me perspective on other areas of running so thank you!!!

    • @marykalter13
      @marykalter13 11 месяцев назад

and i commented this like a quarter through this video so everyone's stories have made this even more motivating. i know on one hand this can be discouraging the fact that seemingly every woman have had a negative experience running (to so many different degrees), i think it's a wonderful thing how it's a seemingly universal experience for all women. we build on eachother and we support eachother and we make eachother stronger. this video has put this even more in perspective for me and i would encourage you to share this on every platform even in an abbreviated form, this is worth it and you all are worth it ❤

Loved the video! I've been running for more than a decade and this year decided to take things a bit slowly... Until a friend of mine asked me to help her train for a marathon. Which I did. She did brilliantly at the race. I know because I was right there with her. Currently I'm helping another female friend of mine train for her first half marathon. She's not using a watch - just her phone and Strava. She only does her long runs with other people and the others (all men) abandoned her because she's too slow for them. I now run with her and she's 2 weeks away from her first ever half marathon.
As a man, my biggest concern is getting chased by a dog while out for a run. This happened to a fellow run club member of ours and he ended up in hospital. Someone left their gate open and a pitbull came out and mauled him. So I carry a pepper spray just in case. The ladies' stories are sad, and the reason why so many female runners either hit the treadmills or only go running in groups.

Wow, awesome video. Really loved the video and wondered if you could do a follow up on what makes runners can do to help you feel supported and more comfortable. I always try to say hi to everyone I see while running, but there are some situations where I've love advise on the best thing to do to make someone feel comfortable. For instance, if you are coming up behind someone on the trail, how do we ensure not to make someone feel uncomfortable etc. For me running is amazing for my mental health, and I can't Imagine how hard it must be to have that taken away because of anxiety and the behaviour of others. We are with you all, and please, please make a video on how we can support better!

Well done to all of you!
Thank you for talking about all these issues that women runners face.
I'm a mom runner too. I am lucky as my children are older. It is easier to juggle motherhood as I don't have babies or toddlers.

A lovely heart warming adventure thank you ladies for talking about women and for showing everyone that muddy trails are fun. Hopefully it will encourage people to enjoy the outdoors and then to help in the protection of theses wonderful places.

    That was amazing!!!
It’s sad that as female runners we are scared or have to really think about safety while running. I won’t run in the dark and very rarely run trails alone. I wish it wasn’t like that 😢.
    You are all amazing!!

One of the best videos ever! It was lovely to hear your stories on running as a female. It's a shame worrying about running in the dark in fear of something happening. I worry about it more this winter as I'm training for a marathon so my runs will be longer, and I can only run before or after work :/

I belong to a casual, social running club that runs on Monday nights from a local microbrewery, year-round. We're lit up like Christmas trees at this time of year and we have an almost 50-50 split of men and women. Groups like this are very supportive of women generally. Parkrun is another venue where women can expect to be treated with respect and admiration.

I’ve never heard other women talk about the cat calls and other situations, but I’ve had to change my running route multiple times to avoid this. Thank you for sharing your stories!
