** (Yes, we realize Adam refers to the dino as Lucy and then later he refers to it as Sue ... Just one of those things.) **
Adam this is not a cave, this is a temple for DIY people like me.
Adam, I have to ask, there is one thing that I would flock to if I clocked it straight away. Ramirez/Connors sword from Highlander. Is that one you bought or did you make yourself? As a big Highlander fan I'd love you do do a show and tell with this. Also, have you ever considered making Ramirez's peacock outfit? That would be awesome and I think you would love his hat. Also, if you had to make one from scratch, how would you go about it. Thanks.
I believe the Sue is from the original skull that it was cast from hence he named it Lucy instead but forget sometimes.
Ha .. I had to do a rewind to check :D - Is Lucy from the oldest known human?
Pool table is gone.
I always thought is was a bit much for the space.
The difference between the two spaces is related to the connectivity of the items. The mass of “unrelated items” that welcomes them at the entrance is difficult to absorb and categorize. The “shop” with the tools and materials is quickly dissected by the brain. Though I admire the shop side, I delight in the exuberance of the entrance. Thanks for the mini tour.
Well said. Agreed.
It's the difference in head room for me. If the workshop had a lower ceiling with tools hanging over your head then it would feel completely different
You nailed it! Also I agree with Ben Dohrmann about the head room. Well said, both of you!
i.e. CHAOS!!!! v order
@@bendohrmann9428 yes the lower headroom with all the stuff hanging from the ceiling will make some folks feels claustrophobic. You also worry you'll bang your head or knock stuff down accidentally. Also, it is more disjointed then the main workshop area in terms of organization.
Your shop reminds me of a phenomena I discovered when learning animation. When we're creating an animation, particularly a hand drawn animation, as creators we get so intimately familiar with any given frame of animation that we can see all the detail of that frame in a fraction of the time it takes for someone watching it for the first time. For that reason, I realized that I needed to leave things on screen for 2-3 heartbeats longer than I think they should in order for them to look right to others.
In that same way, I'd guess that Adam has such an intimate familiarity with everything in the cave that he can parse and process the space so much faster than other people can. I feel like I would need to either take 5-10 minutes to just stand there and give my brain time to process everything around me, or just blank it all out and not process any of it at all.
I came here to leave this comment basically. But you framed it better than I ever could. He knows every piece. That's why he takes it in differently than someone seeing it for the first time.
👍😎 Well said
normally ''caves'', storages, garages that are like this have poor lighting and you don't see much, the fact that you can see everything clearly makes this just much more impressive
It shows how proud Adam is about the things he makes and collects. He is proud of that weird thing in the corner he hasnt thought about for 6 months. Proud of every detail.
it's a practical issue, he talked about it in a video, he recommends a well illuminated work cave.
'This is a celebration' After you said that, my concern and overwhelmness I feel when I see your space vanished. It's an Aladins cave of creative chaotic wondor where every piece of treasure has a use, a purpose or a story, and I love that.
The cave is a reflection of Adam’s amazing productivity. He has produced so many incredible and beautiful things!
hey, you're down here, nice to see. it's funny how you also got your cave filled with HP, Apollo and R2D2 equipment
It's also that he has the funds to buy a whole ton of shit. Having more drills and r2d2 suits than you know what to do with isn't productivity
@@jakobvanklinken But it's still cool! 😋
amazing and also incredibly spastic* productivity
It's like a museum of movie and creative awesomeness! Love these videos, thank you for sharing!
I’d love to spend a couple of hours just meandering and geeking out there. As overwhelming as it seems, once you get to the shop it does have a calming affect because it’s the space we all know. Oddly seeing your chaos make me feel more comfortable with mine. Not in a, “At least mine isn’t that bad.” More of a, “Oh, we all kinda have the same issue.” I also like the fact that even you have some of your kids crap in your space. 😂 This is life. 👍🏾
Fuck I'd spend days there, could imagine going there with Adam as his kid and st 5pm when Adams hanging out the door about to lock it wanting to go home for dinner, I'm still lost in awe at the random uniquities and tools within!
I absolutely love the line “this is what I do when left to my own devices” as an explanation of the cave. I love that. I’m using that about my workshop from now on 🥰
I'd be like a kid in a candy shop (while still being wise enough not to mess with or touch anything), and as an aspie with ADD - I get the feeling and the quote "you should see how it is in here [the mind]" is SO accurate.
is it Lucy or Sue? Once while spending time with my aunt as a young adult, I saw a sign she had up. It said "A creative mess is better than tidy idleness" and I took that to heart. These days I look at my surroundings and appreciate that they are often in fact a tidy synopsis of what my grey matter has going on.
Wonder which it is too, unless it has a proper name like Lucillel Susan or something like that.
It's probably Sue, which is the name of the T-rex at the Field Museum in Chicago. [Most complete T-rex fossil ever found] And Lucy is the name of a female Hominin skeleton.
It's awe inducing. That entrance to the shop is like walking into the mind of someone. It's so chaotic and yet there is somehow logic to it all. I dream of the day your cave becomes a museum.
Just the fact that you can look into a camera and, in all seriousness, say "Sorry the shop's a wreck right now, I'm just tackling a wiring problem in R2-D2's head" is a testament to how far you've come in life, and why so many younger makers like myself look up to you. How nonchalant you are about dropping that kind of cultural hype bomb on people like me is its own kind of cool power. Keep doing what you do, Adam.
The shop space is more ordered where things fit into their place and are generally in order. The rest of the space is more chaotic with so many different shapes and different things everywhere. The extra height and open area in the shop also generally feels less restrictive. Even on camera it’s interesting how moving to the shop space fees relieving even if the other space wasn’t bad.
Also the shop space is just a garage type space. Everyone knows there's hammers and screwdrivers, pliers, etc. in those sorts of spaces and you're not going to randomly encounter a t-rex head or any of the other things. The stuff area is complete mystery until you delve into it.
That and the fact that people are more USED to the shop area because they have seen it many more times on YT, People are much less bothered by something they are used to. In extreme cases a person very bothered by something will confuse "familiarity/strangeness" with "good/evil" and then try to declare the unfamiliar thing as evil/bad/illegal/etc.
My reaction as well. Even on video, I found the beginning chaotic and overwhelming (though not necessarily in a BAD way), but once he was in the shop area there was that moment of relief where almost instantly it felt like everything made sense spatially. A garage/shop space is at least a frame of reference where it all intuitively clicks (even if it is organized to make sense to Adam, and I’d probably end up spending twenty minutes just trying to find the tool I needed).
Someone else mentioned it too, but the shift from the entrance with the lower ceiling to the shop area with the high ceiling and brighter lighting may also be why people relax more in the shop.
I have absolutely no business to be there except the fact I’m a huge Mr Savage fan. But this is bucket list territory for me. Heck, even just an hour conversation with Adam would let me live the rest of my life in complete bliss.
I feel the same, there are so many great people in the world that it would be amazing to meet but Adam Savage and his collection of crazy stuff and stories is so high up the list.
You have a principal when weathering an item ""if one spot stands out in particular, that's a bad thing". I think the same applies here. There's just so much going on, that no one item is "the" thing.
The shop area is less claustrophobic, I think I would relax more in the slightly more open space.
I would pay to tour your shop. I love everything about it.
same here, i could easily spent an entire day in there and be geeking out the whole time
This sort of 'non answer' answer to the question is perfect. Just perfect.
To actually see it and experience it if only just 1/1000th of it in real life. I completely understand.
Also a beautifully revealing and vulnerable space to share with us, those first few steps in.
Love it.
One of my favorite Tested videos! Loved the mini tour and Adam’s ability as a storyteller shining through him talking about his things.
Thank you, Adam. I really enjoyed that updated mini tour of your Cave! 👍
For your project, sending me prayers for my friend and family 💞
First time he pointed out the T. rex it was “Lucy” the second time it was “sue” I hope he’s eating enough lions mane mushrooms as to protect his cognitive fortitude. Adams an American treasure.
The original Sue is in The Field Museum in Chicago, found in the US. Lucy is an anthropological humanoid find from Africa.
Yeah. She's "Sue". He has a video of him assembling the parts which were modeled on the original.
at 2:31..." come in, come in, come in." Spoken like a true mad scientist who is the only one who truly understands the amalgamation that makes the cave what it is. Love ya, Adam!
I totally get your feeling of the "clutter" being a representation of what's in your head. I struggle with keeping that interior clutter from spilling out. While not a hoarder, I also feel dreadfully uncomfortable in sterile "everything in its place" spaces be it homes or offices. Your shop speaks to me.
When I went to teacher school, we learned a bunch of stuff about learning styles. We also learned that NO ONE fits neatly into any of the learning style boxes we were learning. That said, Adam (like me) is a mostly kinesthetic learner and probably lives mostly in the concrete random part of his cognitive space. Move the wrench 30cm from where he put it down and he won't be able to find it...
Concete sequential folks would probably find his cave aggravating and abstract sequential guys would start "man-spaining" why a different organizational paradigm would be more efficient.
I love it! I would need to just stand there for a minute, and then want to wander around for far too long. This is like an inspiration wonderland!!
Spaces like your cave are just works of human art. I've been lucky enough to see a few people's working spaces that were.... not dissimilar in their feel to what I imagine the cave is like, and it's just always a kind of impressive that never gets old.
The 3 areas of the cave remind me of the 3 ways I portray myself. The shop is how I appear to everyone and try to appear to myself, the collection is when I lose myself in all the things I love and try to drown myself with them, and then the entryway is what my mind feels like when I sit and meditate. I have never seen a space that represents how it feels to live in my mind so clearly, Thank you for showing me the space.
The correct amount of clutter is either all of the clutter or none.
I’d love to take a walk around the shop. It’s probably one of the greatest museums in the world.
Wow! Now I understand what it feels like to enter the cave. The complete overload of impressions, the smell of the workshop, and Adam's lovingly inviting support to help guide you through it. Wonderful video!
Oh Adam, thank you so much for letting us have a glimpse of something so personal and what is for a lot of people (myself included, of course) a dream space to witness.
Adam, I totally relate to what you are saying about the Hostile reactions to your space. I'm sure you know that has everything to say about them and I know you don't take it personally. You're a good guy. Thank you for sharing this amazing collection of Wonderful Treasures!!
@modest mouse colored person if somebody was really hungry I can see it, on the other hand, I hate eating outside and would be the opposite, hey adam, go grab a bite and I will wait at the shop!
@modest mouse colored person I agree. I could see a couple of reasons I'd respond like the two "aggressive" guys. There's a lot of interesting stuff and being overwhelmed sucks. ALTERNATIVELY or ADDITIONALLY, it could easily be out of respect for Adam and his time. If they have food plans and a timetable it might be efficient to not dive down a rabbit hole, let alone 20 of them.
@modest mouse colored person it shouldn't even be rude, but, like you said, maybe you had to be there.
I invited a friend of many years for the first time to my home. My walls are, on one side floor to ceiling books, and on the other floor to ceiling artwork by myself and other family members, photographs, curios and objet trouvee. He stayed with me for two weeks. In all that time he didn't look at the books, or make any comment on the art. It was as if he didn't see anything.
I was puzzled. When I go to a home that is even a bit like mine, I love to look on the bookshelves and take a long look at the art they display as I find it most interesting and informative about the home owner.
I still don't understand. I am guessing he was intimidated in some way, like it was a display of my wider taste and perhaps a higher education that he found unable to process or felt unequal to commenting on.
Adams cave is a wonderland to me. If Adam were hungry to go to a meal I would suggest he meet me at the door and he shouldn't let me in until later. Then he should be prepared to stay up VERY late.
Some people find maximalism overwhelming. It's a defensive reaction, not an aggressive one.
Has Jamie ever visited? I bet he would lose his mind 🤣
That was my reaction also.
It would be interesting to see them together again in each of their spaces
@@alasdairspitzer4625 giggity
Highly dought it as they admitted that they never hung out outside tge show
He’s been there, yes.
This is my absolute favourite one you’ve done. I’ve wondered literally for a decade now what the place looks like when you come through the front door.awesome
Thank you so much for the tour! I can totally feel the difference between the two sides. The entryway is dark and more cluttered. It gives me anxiety just looking at it. But when you come through to the shop, its bright and wide open and more organized.
Here’s a question…Adam, would you consider yourself to be a hoarder?? 🤣🤣
It's his collection
@@linguini8331 it’s a joke..hence the “🤣🤣”
reminds me of my style of housekeeping in my shop. I like to refer to as "There appears to have been a struggle"
Adam,
The cave is controlled chaos where the shop is cramped organization. The whole experience of going through your building is a great physical example of how your brain processes things. It is the same thing that you see at Jamie's M5 shop, he has everything categorized, labeled and shelved where everything can be easily seen. His problem solving style is on full display there just like yours is evident in your space.
Thanks for this. Not only is it fascinating, it gives me some comfort. I'm involved in a year-long process to cut down on stuff I've accumulated over the years. (I'm now in the fifth year of this '"year-long" process.) Your describing The Cave as a "celebration" makes me feel a lot better!
Adam, I love your space and totally understand how a space like that is a reflection of your mind. Even in my little office space I try to enjoy as much of my hobbies as I can. Having stuff you find interest and enjoy is only work while if you can enjoy and share with others… I honestly hope the world is able to enjoy your space as a museum someday. Seeing your workshop and collection of precious things is inspiring.
i love seeing this because it reminds me so much of my studio and my house in general. so many things to look at everywhere and a general sense of chaos in its most beautiful form.
I love it - whenever anybody gives me a hard time over how much stuff I have in my shop - I can send them to see this video! Thanks Adam.
I find the space very relaxing and comfortable. I look around and see so many familiar things, its like being amongst old friends. I'd be so honored to see this place in person. Adam, you have achieved what I can only dream about. We are kindred spirits my friend. This is the life I wish I could live, it just never worked out that way for me. But I can't complain. I'm happy to have what I do have and we all can live vicariously through you. Thank you for sharing!
The array of droids in the process of disassembly / assembly gives some real Anakin Skywalker vibes (from Episode 1.)
Controlled Chaos.. With out sounding bad, this would be like being able to crawl through the recesses of your mind with each item representing a thought or memory with a whole book of stories that each individual item could tell you without you having to say a single word. The upside is that we would want to hear every single story you do have to share for each item because the more we know, the more we can appreciate where you are in life, where you you came from, and where you are going to, and how your knowledge, wisdom, and experience can help shape our current and future story as well. Thank you for sharing!
As a 44 yr old just diagnosed with ADHD last year, I'm going to adopt that line when referring to my mess to help explain it. "if you think this is bad imagine up here".
The observation I would make is that we've all seen the shop portion of the shop in almost every episode, so I think it also feels more familiar. The outer part of the shop is stuff we rarely see.
The shop being the "calm" makes total sense. When you think about how data is processed in the mind it creates this interesting thought experiment. If you were to say "I need a screwdriver" You could generally look around the shop and find one. The same could be said for pretty much anything in there. Of course a new person would at first struggle but having followed your shop for so long I feel that I could be asked a question on a tool and find it just by asking myself "Where would I put this thing". So moving into the shop mentally just has the person tell themselves "Oh I know where the things I need are". Even if they are not actually doing any work in the shop.
The VR tour of Adam's shop was just a delight to experience. Coming to Adam's shop in real life would be over whelming but absolutely a dream come true.
I love the cave so much !🤩I remember going to some weird little second hand store here in nz and it had the exact same vibe and it's such an amazing aura to be around! I love that everything has a story to it, especially in a lived-in space like the cave!
I can totally understand why people get more relaxed in the workshop portion, which still a massive shock it's an organized chaos that people can understand with everything labeled and tucked into bins, while the opening area feels so amazingly chaotic it's a wonder RUclips compression can even handle the variation in pixels. It makes me happy to see that R2 getting fixed.
I'll be showing this to my mother to explain the chaos that is my space. Thank you for articulating it so well.
This walk thru just made my day!!! What a trip through one's space that is full of thiings from all us that are over 65 too see props and artifacts hanging every where (@@)! This one I will share with all my viewers and friends on FB for sure! Bear in Tx.
The Cave reminds me of the House on the Rock. Immediately overwhelming, but so packed with interest you can't help but be awed.
I've never completely understood the layout of where everything is until this video. it's cool having a mental picture of the layout between the spaces you're seeing. it's like when you finally start to understand where all the rooms of the millennium falcon are even though you've been seeing each of them for so long.
As always I'm affirmed in my level of collecting when I see Adam's shop. I LOVE my shop as it truly is a reflection of the maker.
"If you think this is bad, you should see what is like in here." OMG that's so true! What a great way to put it, well said!
I've LOVED MythBusters and all the cool projects that everyone has gotten up to since then since I can remember being able to watch cable, and I feel like I can relate to Adam and his shop in SO many ways, I would die to get to visit and see all of that in person, I practically squealed with happiness seeing the Firefly poster I have to my left in my office on his door (though I'm sure MANY people have the same one).
Adams aside about Vonnegutt reminded me of something a coworker of mine once said when I was talking about how hard it was to keep my desk area presentable at work and that my desk at home was 1000x worse, he pointed out that like the Einstein quote, a cluttered desk/workspace is the sign of a cluttered mind, and that you often see that it's the smartest and most creative people that have these sorts of spaces, and I think it speaks that even the more well ordered shop workspace is still comparatively a wild area.
I've learned SO much from Adam and MythBusters and it's honestly part of what has made me pursue my passion in Psychology, having re-ignited my desire to learn more and help people, and hopefully help push the field further in it's understanding of ourselves, and while not in the same sort of 'maker' space as them, the passion and zeal at which they approach projects and problems and learning new information to continuously grow has been a huge inspiration to me.
Thank you for the tour- a true privilege and joy
the workshop is more comfortable for people because we all feel like we've been there. we spend so much time with you in it, its like coming home.
Totally understand the reactions people have, the cave is awesome!! Adam mentioned Bernard Vonnegut, I went to college where he taught and because his department shared a building with the Astronomy department I’d walk by his office on the way to class. So, yeah that story was easy to believe :).
Thank you for sharing your shop in this state! It’s humbling and relatable. 💜
I like that the fact thats its half work and half play...build stuff and see props within steps of each other...ITS EPIC!!
Probably the coolest, most fascinating work space ever amassed. I consider it a privilege to take even a video tour and loved the virtual tour from a few years ago.
6:17 I love all the lanyards for visitor passes and such ^^
Honest to God I've been watching this channel for a long long time and never realized it's this small (or maybe just cluttered haha). That space is such a living thing and it never looks the same in 2 videos, it's basically it's own person. Awesome video!
Your passion rubs of thru my screen. Thx for showing us.
This makes me feel soooo much better about where I am coming from. I think I would find an empty space extremely overwhelming.... it’s an immersive, wonderful space....very zen. 😑
Thanks for the mini tour, that was awesome!
Great video. I think the reason people calm down once reaching the maker portion of your shop is because although chaos, the theme is tools and making, whereas the intro spaces lack that theme.
Your workshop IS your MASTERPIECE, Adam.
I have been thinking about this for a while. You need a 5 Story museum/ Workshop! & Sell VIP tickets & offer guided tours. It would be amazing! Maybe calling it the "Museums of Making" & if there's enough space offer private workshops to OTHER Makers in the SF area & "Maker artist in residence" program!
Wow, amazing tour. Can't imagine anyone not expressing delight seeing that.
I love getting this tour, I have a feeling without this kind of pre-tour walk-around I'd get a bit of geek-overload-heroworship-vapor-lock on getting in and looking around for the first time.
Please keep being awesome, please keep showing that science and engineering are awesome. The world needs you.
Amazing seeing this now, knowing what’s happened the last 6 months in Adam’s cave - this here is like the room of requirement! 😮❤
And such an incredible transformation since then! 👏🏼 Awesome work ❤🎉
I love the idea of surrounding yourself with things you love. Respect to you sir!
Getting the full walkthrough makes me realize that it's a lot smaller than I thought. An absolute great use of space. I wish I could visit one day.
I hope Adam knows how loved and appreciated he is
Thank you for showing your stuff Adam! Really love it, sounds comfortable for me, it look like my shop in much bigger! Love 🙂
Thank you for the tour.
Thanks for showing, amazing place.
Oh my word, your cave is the stuff of my childhood dreams. It would take me 2-3 hours to get from the door to your workshop. SO FREAKIN' COOL! And we can't even see half of it. Have you done a livestream yet where you just walk us through stuff out there? I'd love to be able to see more of what's in the display cases on the far wall, in the ceiling and just everywhere. So amazing.
Your place reminds me of the old army/navy surplus stores we had growing up. There used to be old Vietnam, WWII and even WWI stuff EVERYWHERE! tents parachutes, binoculars, compasses, knives, generators, ammo cans... Floor to ceiling! I LOVED those stores and would beg my dad to take me in the weekends because you could just dig through stuff for hours.
Oh did you ever catch the Major’s shop in Bar Harbor, Maine? Glorious!
Thank you showing us around the cave .... Every object has a story waiting to be told ...... I don't understand how ppl couldn't be fascinated by the caves contents
Before you said it, I felt less overwhelmed the moment you walked into the shop. It was so strange! I immediately knew what you meant about how other people feel when moving from the collection area to the shop without ever being in the space!
This video made me so happy :-) . Thanks for the guided tour and pointing out the “in my head mess”
Mr Savage, your cave of wonders is a magical space! I thank you for sharing Mate🤠👍, also thanks for all of the brilliant knowledge you've shared with us all (in multiple aspects) throughout the years❤️, Cheers friend
The proton pack would catch my view right away, Ghostbusters had such amazing props, and it was such a cool movie. I'm not a big fan of Hellboy, but after watching Adam spend so long on The Samaritan I'd want to see it. I'd definitely want to see and hold the Blade Runner M2019. Lastly, just the staggering variety of tools blows me away everytime, I could never imagine making use of half of them!
Thanks Adam for showing us, and letting us live vicariously through your skill and builds. And if it makes you feel any better I've had like2 pounds of wood chips scattered in a corner of my garage for like 3 weeks. It just hasn't annoyed me enough to want to clean them up!
Adams cave would be one of the things I would love to somehow spend a day in as part of my bucket list. I bet he knows roughly where every single item is if asked which is amazing in itselff, completely organised chaos and a reflection of just how much he loves being creative.
I think one of my favorite things about The Cave is that it is a delightful mix of total chaos and precise organization.
The wooden machinest toolbox grabbed me first, then the collection of machinest tool boxes punched me in the face. Aside from their intended use they are wonderful pooling places for irresistable tiny item collections. Great space, thanks for sharing!!
The cave is a larger version of my dad's workshop at my childhood home. The fun part was going through it all after he had passed... the stuff you find under other items that you either never knew existed or had not seen in years.
It’s awesome to see the look around of the shop, I had always imagined it being much larger even though Adam had mentioned the size. Seeing one angle at a time is so very deceptive.
This is a visual representation of how Adam's mind works, I LOVE THIS.
It’s so interesting how we construct ideas of spaces in our heads based on what we see onscreen. I feel like I now have a much better sense of the cave after watching this video.
That was overwhelming!!!
I liked this question the most. I could spend weeks happily digging through every corner of that place.
Living the dream I wish I had that cave. Honestly you could never be bored walking through history and movie magic.
I love the Firefly poster on the back of the door! Fantastic!
