Niiiiiiiiceeee! I'm totally into creating websites :) Mostly basic stuff, but if you'd like me to help you, just shoot me a message! If that's how I could support you :)
After the past week or two of Uni hell, then needing to psych myself up for the exam period just about to begin - I think I needed this video Simon. You're an inspiration to many! Keep doing what ya doin'!
Simon, as much as I love your videos, I really wish you would get some rest from RUclips every now and again. I don't think I've ever seen you as tired as you are in this video. Your thesis (and sanity) should be your top priority. Unless your side-projects are actually making you happier, I don't know. You do you, just please don't run yourself to the ground! All the best to you and good luck :) You can do this.
1:11/1:40 - I love the motivational Hank Green Twitter quote placed atop your computer! It is exceptionally pertinent to the Ph.D. research and composition process; yours especially, considering for how long you struggled to get your code working properly. Best of luck in finishing your Ph.D., Simon! You're nearly there, we all believe in you!
Submitted my thesis a month ago and you have NO IDEA how much joy i am getting from watching someone else suffer through the exact same things (code not working, rewrites, having to hold 20 different subsections in mind at the same time, 12 hour work days, no break for 2 months, no mental energy for life admin or simply deciding what to eat). This is truly a cathartic experience, thank you. Props to you for juggling a podcast and youtube channel along all that too.
I really enjoy these videos and it's an excellent insight into the student-life. Somehow, these videos really make me motivated to pursue my education, even though you demonstrate how exhausting and draining it is.
Discovered you through The Yogscast a couple months back and thought you seemed like a pretty cool guy so I decided to look you up on RUclips. Now I'm addicted to watching your adventure through your PhD (even though it's two years old now). I'm currently an undergrad double majoring in chemistry and cannabis chemistry and I was contemplating going all the way to the PhD in some field of chemistry. Although, as of now, I do have a deep passion for chemistry, after some research and watching your videos, I think I might just go for a master's instead as it seems the smarter overall route. Absolutely love the videos, can't wait to get to the more recent ones after I finish this series. P.S. Love the The Shawshank Redemption intro
Thank you for making these videos. I am on my way toward a bachelors in astro-physics and stoked for the PHD process (will be in school forever)lol. It is really nice to see your dedication to higher education. Keep it up, your almost Dr. Simon!
Simon I just want to let you know I love checking in to see what the life is like. I just got accepted to college for physics and am looking forward to this admirable grind. Rooting for you!
Damn, footage from August...that pHd really takes a toll lmao. But srs though, these videos are pretty motivational for us students, who just go through normal struggle of library every day,and study session after study session !
Simon, I think I needed this video after the hectic past few weeks. Thank you - you continue to be an amazing inspiration to many! Also, you're in the final stretch of the PhD, you can do it!
Great video simon! I have 5 midterms to write in the next two weeks and 7 assignments. Good luck to everyone else currently struggling with school (or really, anyone going through a tough time) it'll be worth it when you come out the other end
That intro was amazing! I'm new to your channel Simon, and I gotta say, you have got to be one of the most creative scientists I have ever met haha. Also, hang in there, you can surpass the PhD struggles
I am in the same situation like you. I am currently writing up my phd thesis in physics and this is driving me crazy. Hoever, las week I have done 12 pages in 5 days. Very proud on that. The bad think is, that I still have to finish some important experiments in the lab :-/
oh, boy. I 'only' have to do the writing and may be some analysis here and there, but that is already enough for me at the moment. Wish u all the best for the rest of your experiments.
Simon I really love your videos and have been watching for almost a couple of years now. I'm a little concerned with how you're working yourself into the ground tbh. Surely you'd focus better and get more work done if you have a proper weekend away- no work, no youtube, no podcasts, just you on a mini holiday. Trust me, you'll work so much better the following Monday. Please look after yourself :)
A delightful video as ever. I always watch your videos regardless of length, but I love these wee ones because thery're the perfect length for those fake study breaks we take on you tube when we should be going outside to get some vitamin D. #HardtogetVitDinIceland Did the Hank Green quote in the backround..it reminds me of that famous Samuel Beckett quote if you know it?
i am inspired by your vlog. the most interesting thing for me is the time-lapse of you doing work. i would really love if you put more timelapse in the next video or maybe make time-lapse video
as a physic engineer student only on his second year i can say this video actually helped with motivation to deal with the exam stage of this year. "if you want something to get done, you have to learn it" was amazing
Usually when you explain the maths you're doing I'm like "i have no memory of this place" but for once I know what you're talking about (multiple linear regression). It's a nice feeling.
2:30 What sort of multiple linear reg are you doing? For my industrial placement I was grappling principle component regression and all the maths was terrifying!
You said that you were doing multiple regressions, dont forget to do some tests to the model. like indiviual t-ratio and jointly statistically significant test and explaim the diferençes (like the existençe of multicollinearity), and tests for heterostaticity, for later rearrange of your model. You also said that you cand chek one variable or something directably, i dont now if this helps, but, search for FWL theorem.
I've been learning about how to use multiple linear regression in ecology and how to do it in R for the last two weeks :p I'm in my first master biology :)
Just a recommendation, if you sleep on the floor you have to lift up you mattress and let it ventilate from time to time, preferably every morning, because there might start mold to grow, due to your sweat.
Simon, I have a question for you: do days seem to fly by as your days are busier with the PhD work? I have just started university and weeks have passed so fast already.
Simon - I see you like singing - I do too, probably a lil too much :) I sing bass and will have (hopefully) my grade 8 in singing by the time I start uni next year - I wondered how competitive entry for the chapel choir is, and also for the a capella groups please? Exeter looks like the best non-oxbridge uni for singing - of course course content is of paramount importance but singing opportunities are a big part of why I want to go there. Thanks :)
Not looking forward to this...am 1 yr from when i need to hand in. But, heading home from uni now (at 9pm :P) having just got probs the most exciting result of my Phd so far :) :) I was wondering Simon, what do u think u ll make videos on when ur no longer a student?
I sure hope so! I think it's the same as anyone who does videos about being a student, I always hope they continue so we can see where that education took them. Everyone's paths are so different :)
I'm also about 1 year from when I need to hand in my PhD thesis.. First article done and submitted for publishing. Need to get started with 2nd article. Then the thesis, according to supervisors, is just these two articles tied together with a ribbon. But I'm sure I'll get my own harrowing at that point in time when I quickly realise that is much more than that. BUT one can hope.
This may sound odd but I was thinking about going to Uni when I finish college but I'm a bit worried about the money side. I understand there's student loans but I was wondering how do you manage your money/loans?
The plan has changed too much to give you a coherent answer to the first question. I use Mendeley to organise my literature though, and that's really excellent!
I have found a great interest in physics and am in my last year of high school. i would love to do physics at higher level schooling but i am not very good at maths, any advice? love the vids btw
Unfortunately in my experience the only way to get better at maths is to practise practise practise! Anyone can do it, at the end of the day it's just a bunch of rules that you need to follow to get the answer; it's just a question of patience and practice. I wasn't very good at maths at the start of school, but after some teachers believed in me and convinced me to do lots of problems and practise I got there in the end. You can do it too!
What does this guy do for money? I'd love to do PhD studies but feel like I'd definitely need a way to find housing and what not for a reasonable price, while also having time for said PhD studies.
Simon, will we get a chance to read the Thesis when it is published- or more specifically, will you post a link for those who are interested?
YES - for the \emph{last} time I will be posting a copy of my thesis on my website when: a) I have a thesis, and b) I have a website
The \LaTeX is getting to him.
Niiiiiiiiceeee! I'm totally into creating websites :) Mostly basic stuff, but if you'd like me to help you, just shoot me a message! If that's how I could support you :)
i believe in you!
Simon, you are the most motivated person I have ever seen.
Nah, that's Casey Neistat. Though he's got a LOT more money than me haha
Most people at Oxford are dedicated.

I expect a make-good sponsorship video for that contract breech.
Tbf I did literally plug your squarespace code that one time ;P
hahaha I forgot about that
Real Engineering Love your videos man
i'm dreading getting to this stage of my PhD, but it would also be exciting to finish
this comment aged... interestingly

After the past week or two of Uni hell, then needing to psych myself up for the exam period just about to begin - I think I needed this video Simon. You're an inspiration to many! Keep doing what ya doin'!
I don't know why, but my favorite vlogs of you are when you vlog really busy days :)
Never quit man! This Phd will be such a huge accomplishment!
Simon, as much as I love your videos, I really wish you would get some rest from RUclips every now and again. I don't think I've ever seen you as tired as you are in this video. Your thesis (and sanity) should be your top priority.

Kind words, but perhaps he's the best judge?
Paraquito He probably feels obligated to his subs, which is bad.
Mike exactly
RUclips gives a more instant gratification which can be lacking when doing a project as big as a phd

Oh, I feel you on the rewrites - currently trying to do major revisions on my first and second chapters whilst writing my third chapter.
The fact that your motivation and persistence with work makes me motivated really helps, thanks!

Hi Simon! I am also in the late stages of writing up my PhD. I watch your videos to keep motivated throughout it all. Good luck with the writing up!
PETITION FOR SOLERO TO SPONSOR SIMON
Simon I just want to let you know I love checking in to see what the life is like. I just got accepted to college for physics and am looking forward to this admirable grind. Rooting for you!

Favorite vlogger using favorite movie quotes, the feels!
Now I need to try Soleros to get my productivity up! Any other productivity tips?
Really appreciate what you're doing, Simon. Even with heaps of work you keep posting these awesome vlogs... And it just gets better. I'm a big fan.
Hey you're getting towards the end.. keep it up.
My favourite channel, this guy never fails to inspire, absolute legend. Love you Simon
That intro was amazing! I'm new to your channel Simon, and I gotta say, you have got to be one of the most creative scientists I have ever met haha. Also, hang in there, you can surpass the PhD struggles
It's so motivating to see how much you're sacrificing for your Ph.D. Keep up the work, you're almost done!
I really love your time lapse videos/segments btw! :)

Another nice video to watch with a good message. Good luck with finishing your PhD!
In my a level chemistry class today we were learning about atmospheric pressure (to work out the moles of a gas)!! Love your channel!!

2:22 It says 'solero please please please send me free stuff I love your lollies'. It took me 5 minutes to land it so thank me later.
edit: future me here, use "," and "." to skip a frame backward and forward respectively.
You are so amazing! I know that it will work out for you. Just remember to keep the bigger picture in mind!
The closing phase of all scientific thesis's is depressing...
this video makes me scared for when i come close to finishing my phd
keep it strong boi! love you braddah
A delightful video as ever. I always watch your videos regardless of length, but I love these wee ones because thery're the perfect length for those fake study breaks we take on you tube when we should be going outside to get some vitamin D. #HardtogetVitDinIceland
Did the Hank Green quote in the backround..it reminds me of that famous Samuel Beckett quote if you know it?
Love the Shawshank quotes, classy addition.
You are a brilliant human being who is interesting enough on your own that nothing you ever post will be boring. So there.
i am inspired by your vlog. the most interesting thing for me is the time-lapse of you doing work. i would really love if you put more timelapse in the next video or maybe make time-lapse video
Great video! Good luck as you finish up the thesis!
Thank you Simon, these videos give me hope to finish my thesis

Was just watching a skrapz vid and now watching about a PHD student. Your vids are good though my man keep up the work

So inspiring to us who are commencing college ..I needed this today! :)
This vlog was so real and amazing!!!! LOVE IT!
Don't forget to take a sweet submission photo when you finish (willemhuiskamp.weebly.com/uploads/2/2/7/2/22720116/willemshark_orig.jpg )
Haha well mine definitely isn't going to be as cool as yours!
Enjoyed the video, by the way. Sounds like you're well on track to a great thesis - just endure a little longer!
2:30 What sort of multiple linear reg are you doing? For my industrial placement I was grappling principle component regression and all the maths was terrifying!
i 10000% respect your grind man
Go Simon. The way you finish a work like this is just to do a little bit every day.
Definitely tell us your thoughts on "The Prince" when you read it.
I'm watching this and writing my last words on my MSc thesis
And was that ... " and they all lived happily ever after. The end." ?
Is about solid-state acids, I'm using solid-state NMR to investigate these materials.
. . .and the NMR lived happily ever after LOL
Keep up the hard work!
I've been learning about how to use multiple linear regression in ecology and how to do it in R for the last two weeks :p I'm in my first master biology :)
lol the picture of pixle girl in the beginning. Somehow she seems familiar, I'm not sure why...
GOT anyone?

hmmm...
Just a recommendation, if you sleep on the floor you have to lift up you mattress and let it ventilate from time to time, preferably every morning, because there might start mold to grow, due to your sweat.
I was waiting for this for so loooong!!
Simon, I have a question for you: do days seem to fly by as your days are busier with the PhD work? I have just started university and weeks have passed so fast already.
You're awesome! Keep going :)
We use linear regression all the time in clinical epidemiology!
YoursTruly same in psychology
It's the most basic statistical tool that exist. Everyone uses it 😀
shawshank is one of my favorite films now I feel like watching it.
This video is just the story of my current PhD life! I am exhausteeeeddddd!
Why did you do this to me ? You made me watch Shawshank Redemption again even when i had a ton of other shit to do
I am done with university when i still rading undergraduate, can’t imagine how you get throught this.
Simon - I see you like singing - I do too, probably a lil too much :) I sing bass and will have (hopefully) my grade 8 in singing by the time I start uni next year - I wondered how competitive entry for the chapel choir is, and also for the a capella groups please? Oh my gosh i also happened to be in rewriting some stuffs on my final year project and idk how i could carry forward like you did. :(
The beard has really grown on me. I love it.
I’ve literally just finished reading The Prince by Machiavelli and read Common Sense by Thomas Paine before it- they’re both great, great reads.
I am so getting a Solero, right now! :D
This seems to be a well structured account of Simon's now seemingly rapid decent into madness.
the shawshank redemption theme in the beginning sucked me into the video in two seconds
Love the Shawshank dub in the background during the intro.
I am in love with the "Umbrella" part of this video.
Simon, we are with you!!! Bla, bla bla ;-))) Thumps up!
Hi Simon, just wondering, do you ever experience severe neck or back pain from sitting for long hours?
Shoutout to the RealEngineering shirt at the beginning
Hoo boy, Simon's using regression
(Currently taking that myself in undergrad)
Have you ever used Plotly for visualization?
No bed frame? Daym
I am shocked to write this, but the beard is growing on me. :D
Not looking forward to this...am 1 yr from when i need to hand in. But, heading home from uni now (at 9pm :P) having just got probs the most exciting result of my Phd so far :) :)

where can I get this edition of the books he bought
Keep up the hard work mate. When's your Aviva?
This may sound odd but I was thinking about going to Uni when I finish college but I'm a bit worried about the money side. I understand there's student loans but I was wondering how do you manage your money/loans?
please share how you plan the writing of the phd and what programs you use to organize your literature etc. Thanks!!
The plan has changed too much to give you a coherent answer to the first question. I use Mendeley to organise my literature though, and that's really excellent!
Simon Clark awesome! Thanks
Cosmological constant t-shirt?
Hey that's a 'Real Engineering' t shirt. Can you send me the link where I can get them?
I have found a great interest in physics and am in my last year of high school. i would love to do physics at higher level schooling but i am not very good at maths, any advice? love the vids btw

You typically get paid for studying a PhD. It's not much but enough to get by
Cool, thanks!
LOOL I just had a red berries solero before watching this video .. I'm a solero fan too
Haha Simon ;) Great explanation of multiple linear regression ! 🙊🎉 MAGIC stuff #economist #econometrics
Good introduction by Shawnshak
where is new vlogsssss
Is that a grammar mistake I see in the description...
