Josh understands shows like this and OFAH better than any other American reactors. Gets the humour and the character dynamics/emotion are not lost on him either.
Maybe because he’s open minded and because he’s from Gary Indiana and has seen a lot more of the harsh side of life. A lot of Americans from comfortable circumstances are narrow minded and inept (and small minded).
I can't imagine anyone not liking this guy lol
I really enjoy these shows bud, thank you =]
Brilliant episode set almost entirely in a cell, with just two people.
A masterpiece of scriptwriting.
The fact that shows normally do this in later seasons to have a bit of fun and have some character development, Porridge has it in the third episode of the first season.
This episode really hits the nail on the head with regards to some of the biggest challenges of doing time. This series was more than just a comedy, it had many incredible moments of serious connections to the real challenges of prison.
This was always one of my favourites. So wonderfully written and performed. Ronnie Barker is a genius and Richard Beckinsale and him have such great chemistry. Classic pairing!
Superb reaction, you really get it. This is a really deep comedy without any pretensions to being so. Two excellent actors, both long gone, Beckinsale from a heart condition at a freakishly early age. R.I.P. Lenny & Fletch.
Thanks bud, I really have been enjoying this show. That is sad to hear.
Fun fact...lennie godber "Richard Beckinsale" is kate Beckinsale dad.
@@quintisalive who rattled your cage?
He’s also actress Samantha Beckinsale’s dad.
Fun fact: Richard Beckinsale played Lennie Godber.
You're joking!????....
That is awesome, thanks for the info bud.
The newspaper Fletch is reading is The Sun, an ultra-popular tabloid famous for its Page 3, which used to always consist of a photo of a topless "lady".
Really enjoying your Porridge reactions. Grew up with this series when it first came out (yep I'm old). As you say the characters grow throughout and at times, the storylines can get quite deep and you find yourself really getting a feel for the struggles of prison life.
Me 2 is old ....watched it first hand
Born 1970, grew up watching Porridge. Earliest TV memory is Jon Pertwee turning into Tom Baker.
I remember this episode from when I first watched , so many years ago. To write comedy can't be easy, but to write a half hour episode about two guys locked in a cell with absolutely nothing in the way of distraction, and still make it funny, warm, engaging, and to make you feel you have learned by the experience of watching it. Two great actors, and a great script.
Love the fact that you love porridge…Ronny Barker (Fletcher)was an absolute legend..national treasure
Why was godber sticking his finger up at Fletch why did he say gruff unpleasant exterior what does that mean
Porridge was good at occasionally glimpsing the bleakness of life in prison, why it should be a deterrent. There's an episode where you spend some time hearing the bangs and clangs of each cell door being slammed closed and locked before lights out at the end of the day. It's haunting and demoralising to have curtailed freedoms represented by a series of hollow, dull sounds. A very well made show.
Nice to see an American enjoy what is a quintessentially British sitcom starring the late great Ronnie barker very rare for an American to understand this very British humour- might like ( as others have suggested) RISING DAMP and OPEN ALL HOURS both very old but very brilliant.
Shame about Richard Beckinsale (Lennie) who died at 31. He'd already starred in 3 successful sitcoms (The Lovers, Porridge, Rising Damp) and you wonder how his career would have gone had he lived for another 40 or 50 years
Had no idea he died so young. RIP Young Lennie
Wish I not saw this, hope I love more than just 2 more years and rip Lennie
Father to Kate Beckinsale the actress
I think he would have played some of the roles that ultimately went to Nicholas Lyndhurst
Yes I miss Richard as if he was a family member. To die of of a hart attack at 31 is just to young.
Btw this show is gives the most accurate portrayal of prison in the UK.
Such a simple episode and one of my all time favourites.
Like I said, Porridge is classic TV, slighty slower then the likes of OFAH and Red Dwarf, it's a comfy sitcom, still funny and has some great moments, but it is indeed one of them shows the whole family could sit down, enjoy and when the credits rolled you felt you really had been entertained! :)
In the era this and many other great TV shows were aired, I bet noone had a single problem paying for a TV license, now... Sadly, the BBC we loved back then is well and truly in the history books, in the most part, from a small handful of shows, which they are shutting down too. People actually despise paying the license fee because it is genuinely not worth the money when it comes to BBC content now, apart from the Attenborough documentaries, they are second to none I will admit, not even Discovery can touch the quality of Sir David's stuff... For many years the amount of people wanting it scrapped and the BBC being funded by the subscription model is growing, and this reflects the state of their sitcoms if you ask me, generally, they are just rubbish.
This is a really good show I am really enjoying it.
Another good series is open all hours with Ronnie Barker and David Jason
Porridge is a brilliant gentle comedy - timeless
Another great vid Josh. Spot on review of the episode. Considering the entire episode was shot in a cell and be so good is testament to the script by Ian La Frenais and Dick Clement. My favourite episode of all time is Just Deserts. Peace out andhave a great day. 👍😁
Thanks bud I appreciate that. This was a great episode I really enjoyed it.
Yeah, up until about 10 years ago or so, we used to have topless women in the daily news papers, it was standard. Always on page 3, so the models were referred to as page 3 girls.
After done these I can't wait for first episode of going straight to see how you think of what fletcher does
Credit must also be given to the writers , just 2 guys not 30 odd like nowaday. Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais (Miss Jones`s real brother out of Rising Damp ) they have 141 writing credits between them, including , Auf Wiedersehen Pet, Lovejoy, The Likely Lads, Shine On Harvey Moon (us older Englishmen will know then) also movies such as The Commitments, Vise Versa, Bond- Never Say Never Again, Flushed Away , to name but a few .
I loved Ronnie Barker, he reminds my of my late grandad so much..🥹
Well done Josh. You really understand .
Porridge is awesome and i am glad you're watching them josh. Peace out brother. ✌️
This is one of the best uk shows there is only second too only fools and horses
This is a really great show I am really enjoying it.
Hope you’re ok Josh. Miss you and hope you’re safe from what’s happened
What happened?
I noticed he replied someone 3 days ago.
@@paquitomoralles that’s good to hear. Miss his reactions but hope he’s safe and well. Wish we had an update. Could give him a donation page to help him out
@@paquitomoralles hurricane went through where he lives and destroyed everything from what I’m aware. He out a video telling but I believe that was what happened
Thanks bud there was alot of flooding but not close to where I live. Thank you though I appreciate that alot.
I don't know if it has been mentioned before but don't forget about Porridge the movie that came out a couple of years after the series ended.
This episode always had a Pinteresque quality to me. And Ronnie Barker is just incredible. He seems to shapeshift into this role.
Cheers Josh, loving it matey..
Love your channel, it's interesting to see an American reaction to British comedies. You will probably also like the BBC show ' *_Ghosts_* '.
Thanks bud I appreciate that. I will add that to my list =]
Good episode - great series
It was a really good episode I enjoyed it =]
2:27 "oh dear..." Bit flowery for a nick in the UK in the 70s 😂
British comedy at its best.
This is a great example of a bottle episode.
Great writing this episode. Its a lot like the Marooned episode in Red Dwarf. Two opposite guys trapped together by circumstance., trying to make the best of a bad situation. Could have been done on stage with no change of scenery, just two actors and one take.
Good old page 3 of the Sun newspaper, a topless beauty ever mon-fri.
That is so wild lol
You must watch Keeping Up 'Appearances' one of the very great UK sitcoms of the 90s
I will add that to my list, thanks for the recommendation bud =]
Enjoying your Porridge reactions. I like nearly all of the episodes but series 2 gets better than the first.
Page 3 of The Sun newspaper was, until a few years ago, always used for large, topless shots of young ladies.
What on page 3 now ?
@@adamdenby1282 similar, just a little more covered up
@@adamdenby1282 Prince Harry jk
I hear it so much, still thinking any page of topless guys (chest to stomach prefer if smooth) is what I enjoy most
@@MrRossKendall boo
Keep up the good work Josh👍❤
He will shakey,
lol
Thank you =]
They made a Porridge movie. It's really good!
bro…just checked out your channel and can’t believe you’re watching porridge…u da plums
To understand British comedy I think Only Fools and Horses must be watched it it's entirety as it covers aspects of British life.
Josh has watched every season in its entirety
Watch "last of the summer wine" for an outside London view of life!
@@brianlaunchbury4491 Not my thing unfortunately.
My grandad watches it on repeat though lol.
That's my list. I know Last of the summer wine is great but not just for me 👍
1. Only Fools and Horses
2. Porridge/Going straight
3. Dads Army
5. Some mother's do ave them
6. Inbetweeners
7. Alan Partridge
Young guy is Kate Beckensale's dad!!!❤❤❤
You got it spot on
Thanks bud.
Top show follows in the same vein throughout.
This Fawlty towers and Blackadder goes forth are all perfect comedies in my opinion
They are both great =]
@@AfterWorkReactions wow thanks for the reply you didn't have to i no your busy but lonely geek here so greatly appreciated mate
Hey, did you know Richard Beckinsale (Godber) is the father of Kate Beckinsale?
Great reaction vids 👌
I know someone else has said this but Lennie Godber's daughter in real life is Kate Beckinsale
Yeah there used to be a topless woman on page 3 in some newspapers
That is wild lol.
In the UK there used to be page 3 girls who were famous for being topless in every daily paper of The Sun on page 3
Bloody feminists!
Used to be? Damn it
That is so wild lol
Kate Beckinsale from the movie Underworld, is the daughter of Richard Beckinsale
youre doing Porridge now?
somebody get this guy his honorary British passport
Good vid Josh.
Thanks bud =]
page 3 newspaper only reason i bought it
LOL
You da bollax too..love that you get it
It is strange to see an Americans reaction to this ! As it is specifically British LOL universal translator engaged !
They got lots of names i ilke the tallywacker very classy
You really need to watch Rising Damp.
the sun newspaper used to have topless women on page 3 they were know as page 3 girls
The page 3 girl was a topless photo of a model they would have in a newspaper unfortunately they stoped it cos they thought it was sexist but I think they should of just added a page 4 guy to make things fair
Hope you are ok
Brother, what happened to Spaced? :o
Very sadly Godber, Richard Beckinsale, died when he was only 31.
Rising Damp is your next series..
I knew Josh would enjoy Porridge. It's such a well-balanced sitcom. There's enough of a storyline and emotional moments without it interfering with the comedy. I love OFAH, but for me the Trotter family grew too much and it became complicated, unwieldy and smooshy. On the other hand, the Roy Clarke sitcoms could be like groundhog day, overly repetitive with every episode following pretty much the same formula. Fawlty Towers was devoid of any empathy for the characters other than perhaps pity. I love all of those programmes, but Porridge just seemed to get everything right.
Up until a few years ago in the Sun, Daily Star, Daily Sport newspapers we had topless women on Page 3. Now its just women who have bikini's or bras.
👍👌😂😂😂❤
💜👍💜👍💜
😂😂😂🎉🎉🎉🎉
Just don't make them this good anymore.
Check out the American version. Not as funny……But y’all Tried.✌🏻😬🏴
No American version of any British comedy has worked. They’re always terrible. They don’t have our wit.
@@bewd4310 wasn't their version of Steptoe & Son and The Office hugely successful over there?
@@MarcoNegrisEye an American version of steptoe that sounds weird Lol
Your views drop quickly when you watch this old crap
When are you gonna watch the young ones. Where rik and ade got started. Don't watch .Red dwarf. Beyond the season your on. Poor writing. And a change in viewing habits in the 90s.
😆
