The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Such wonderful music and so many memories. 15 years old and pumping gas and listening to Motown when Motown ruled for this white boy. My buddies were into the British invasion and I was 💯 percent Motown and my favorite was Levi Stubb's and his four tops and who could scream like the wicked one, Wilson Pickett

my name is Jonathan R. Strausser. Back in 2007-2008, I started a "very small" album re-issue record label (if you want to call it that) called MIDGET RECORDS. I was going to re-issue the entire FULL albums/singles discography of my favorite artists. My first artist was going to be JAY & THE TECHNIQUES. Since I'm a Pennsylvania native myself, I said: "Why not?!" I've enjoyed their music since I was a little kid (in my 40's now). It was going to span their entire career from 1967-1975 or 1976 (I don't have the exact information in front of me @ the moment). Disc 1 was going to be entitled: THE ALBUMS, while Disc 2 was going to be entitled: THE SINGLES and MORE! (or something to that effect). It was going to feature ALL of their singles in mono and/or stereo plus their tracks for MOTOWN and several "never before released" unreleased recordings recently discovered @ the time (2007-2008) by Nicole Loi @ UNIVERSAL MUSIC in NYC.
As my life and luck have almost always ended on a low-point, my investor never came through with the funding, Jerry Ross wanted to sabotage the project by cutting the collection down to 1-CD (losing many tracks in the process) citing that my $19.98 price-tag was WAY TOO MUCH for a 2-CD set (however, when he made the CD deal with CHERRY RED/RPM RECORDS (@ my suggestion) shortly after my "proposed" collection fizzled out, he charged somewhere around $24.98 for a 1-CD collection (I had NOTHING to do with this part), plus, it had to be imported from the U.K.) and UNIVERSAL MUSIC kept raising the costs of everything on me. It amounted to @ or around $30,000 for about 10,000 2-CD sets. That was the bare-minimum I could purchase from them @ the time. I was getting in WAY-OVER my head. I dipped my feet in the water (so to speak) of the music world but found out very early that it's a cut-throat business. I'm glad I got out of it when I did before I started!
Don't get me wrong, I still like music but I'm very selective in my music tastes nowadays. I'd much rather prefer easy listening, soft rock or just simply rain and thunderstorm sounds. I still never got over this, it still bothers me to this day about not being able to release this collection. I feel like I let collector's, fans, and Jay Proctor himself down. Most of all...I let myself down. The UNIVERSAL VAULT FIRE probably destroyed most of the master recordings that were initially supposed to be on this collection. Had I released it initially, they would have been digitally preserved.
If there's one thing I've learned in my life it's this: "You can be the smartest man, know everything about everything...but without money or connections you get nowhere." (Jackie Gleason as Ralph Kramden)

Bands of the mid-to-late 60s like Jay and the Techniques were pioneers. Those familiar with music history know that, even as late as the early 60s, combining races in music ensembles was strictly forbidden (that is, if your wanted to make money through public performances). Musicians of differing races who wished to play together -- and there were many -- did so behind closed doors and, usually, in the small hours, all to avoid detection. So, hats-off to these groups. They blazed a trail.
