When I was 15 (in 1985) , I escaped from an abusive youth facility in Redding California. I sang this song to myself over and over and over, like on repeat. as I made my way through the mountains and forests and then hitchhiking 200 or so miles back to my home town. It took my mind off the hunger and the cold and the fear. You might think that those are traumatic memories for a song, but it was the song that got me through the trauma of it.

Was wondering when you'd get around to Christopher Cross! He was prevalent in the early 80s as part of the easy listening/yacht rock sound typical of the time. "Ride Like the Wind" was his very first single (in 1980), and he followed it up with great songs like "Sailing" (#1 hit!), "Never Be the Same", "Arthur's Theme (The Best That You Can Do" (#1 hit!), "All Right", and "Think of Laura". He is now 70 years old and still touring! Others from this time period you might check out are Air Supply ("All Out of Love"), Eric Carmen ("All By Myself"), Dan Fogelberg ("Longer"), and England Dan and John Ford Coley ("Nights Are Forever Without You").

he deliberately kept the volume down in the mix to keep the flavour of the song with its wall of sound. He says too that with some of the guitarists around him at the time (Eric Johnson etc) he felt a bit intimidated. In retrospect it is a great solo as Rick Beato has pointed out on his channel where he later interviewed Christopher Cross

Michael has shared popular duets with male and female singers, but his own work is the absolute best. Play his live with Kenny Loggins, and his solo music, has smooth wide range , to falsetto. I remember when Christopher Cross's first album came out in 1979 & we all bought a copy. The whole album was good with one hit after another including "Ride Like the Wind". He won 4 Grammy Awards for it. He released a 2nd album in 1983 with a few hits on it. But sadly after that his fame declined. Success came quickly, all at once & then suddenly faded. Too bad as he was very talented.

Has not much to do with the reaction, but I felt the need to honor my Great Uncle who fought in WWII. When he came home, he became a hog buyer. Not glamorous, but he would buy a new Oldsmobile every year in cash . He would “ride like the wind” out west and get lots of tickets going over 100 mph. He was the only survivor of his company. Finally! Lots of memories attached to this song! It was very popular when I left my husband in North Dakota heading back to my home state of New Mexico. I took our 4 girls and rode like the wind! It was about every tenth song on the radio at the time. The volume was up to the hilt and I was belting out the chorus. Special song for me!

Y'all need to keep an ear out for that because he did a lot before and after he "made it"; from the 70's into the 90's. Great reaction! 🤘Rock On!🤘

One of the tragedies of this industry is the fact they shuffled this artist to the side after his major breakthrough and Grammy sweep. His voice was pitch perfect and he was a creative genius who surrounded himself with top notch musicians. He still performs and kills it every time.

@@Spo-Dee-O-Dee you know damn well that oftentimes success in the music business hasn't as much to do with talent as with luck, sex and the almighty dollar. Who ran the record label was often the deciding factor and they made judgements on their wallets and their crotches. I could tell you stories. Cross unfortunately was older and fat. But that didn't diminish his talent and many artists suffered the sophomore blues.

Gotta' do "Sailing" but also other top hits.. definitely (and in no particular order): "Say you'll be mine" "Never be the same" "All right" "Think of Laura" (much slower, but SUCH BEAUTIFUL sound. I must have listened to that song 100 times after a break up with one of my first girlfriends, named Laura, in my teens in the 80s), then there's "Arthur's Theme" (famous movie theme song).. but yeah, "Sailing" is most definitely the #1 hit that put Christopher Cross on the map.
