  • The more ideas the comic book media offer to help fix Marvel and DC the more it becomes clear they want to murder superhero comics. This week CBR suggested DC go all-in on slice -of-life comics. Despite all the evidence that DC and Marvel fans don't buy them. CBR writer David Harth claims the strong reaction to the Trinity backup stories in Wonder Woman are proof superhero fans want more slice-of-life. The problem is nobody is talking about those stories and nobody is buying Wonder Woman to read them. Harth even points to several past slice-of-life comics as proof we need more. Too bad all of them were cancelled early due to low sales. Wes and Aaron discuss the latest stupid take from David Harth and CBR and set the record straight. Comic book media want to murder superhero comics.

And it goes right back to the story problem. In cases her losing the clothes she just bought. Because she was attacked. It has never been the main plot of a single issue. Till writers like Tamaki.

Spider-Man was stuttering like Shaggy to the point he was even stuttering in his thought bubbles, which were very excessive even for the era. I don’t even give him credit for Venom as I hate derivative characters that have the same powers as the hero, it just dilutes the hero. Also, there's a large number of Slice of Life comics on there, so there's already a built in audience there. TBH, it's entertaining to see a fussy, career-driven person with Damian Wayne's personality driven straight up a wall, just like we know he's done to his parents. Even a "slice of life" story requires narrative conflicts that powers cannot insta-solve.
Edit: Also, the vibe I get from the small backup stories is that either the writer of the main story is desperate to stretch things out, or cover for the fact that the team can't finish a complete book within their deadlines.

So I will give example of how right Wes is when it comes to DC's YA books. We would order them at NEC, but we would order them through the book distributor we had an account with. Why? That allowed for us to return them for credit, as opposed to not being able to with Diamond. It also allowed us to take a bit more risk in the number ordered with the returnability. Usually what would happen is you'd get terrible sales on them...sell maybe 20% of what was ordered. Then the remaining 80% would go back for credit. I can tell you for a fact if we didn't have returnability on the books we would barely have ordered them at all. Why? They don't sell to comic fans, and the people that do want them do not shop in comic shops. Basically I don't see how DC makes any money with them as the interest is just so low. Slice of life works in American comics when it's done in the right places, and by people know how to present it. But nobody wants it 24/7 in their books. I like a good slice of life issue....but an issue...maybe 2 throught a 12 issue run in the year. But not all the time. It's not what I am looking for. WTF20.

The so called "slice of life" parts on Superhero comics in the past was there usually to build the characters a d their relationships, but ideally never occupying most of the issue, or if so, (and it wasn't always welcome by readers) would be like in Clairmont era X-men as a "filler issue" between two major sagas. Today, it became a joke thanks to fanfic Tumblr writers' infiltration. We don't need more of that!

If I want a slice-of-life manga, I can go read "Frieren: Beyond Journey's End", it's about an immortal Elf that defeated the Demon King going on a journey of discovery, to learn about humans, we follow her, her apprentice Fern, and Stark the warrior as they travel from town to town, learn about each other, the world and periodically fight monsters and demons along the way to go to Heaven. It's considered one of the best anime of 2023 and the manga is popping off, that's my slice of life, not whatever DC and Marvel's trying to write

While slice of life stuff can be done well and add to a character, it should not be the main focus of a superhero comic. For instance, a lot of Spider-Man stories and Robin stories (either Dick Grayson or Tim Drake) have had slice of life stuff, but there were still plenty of superhero elements (battling villains, investigating crimes, etc.). It’s one thing to have a change of pace issue showing what the heroes do on their “day off” and another to have the slice of life stuff take up more than 50% of each issue of what is supposed to be an action series.

They've completely lost the plot at CBR, haven't they? Or at least this Harth guy has. Did he ever even talk with a person that likes superhero comics? And I don't mean some Twitter/X weirdo, but an actual person who buys and reads those comics. Because the utter nonsense he writes in that article (if you can even call it that) makes me think that he never interacted with one.
Is that Kenneth Rocafort's art behind Aaron?

I actually like slice of life when they are just a small fraction of the main story that help building a character’s personality. In a superheroes story the main focus should be always on action and/or adventure.
I used to read superheroes comics for escapism. What happened recently?

All that they have to do to fix DC Comics is to have a story that that brings back the pre-Crisis DC Universe and Multiverse, but which also brings back the post-Zero Hour DC Universe and Multiverse.
All that they have to do to fix Marvel Comics is to have a story that brings back the pre-Age Of Apocalypse Marvel Universe and Multiverse, but which also brings back the pre-One More Day Marvel Universe and Multiverse.
That will undo all of the bad and stupid stories in DC and Marvel from 1995 to the present. All it takes is for the Presence, a.k.a. the Source to magically alter reality and for the One Above All to cosmically alter reality and both respective comic book universes and multiverses.
A DC Universe where the Crisis On Infinite Earths never happened and a Marvel Universe where the Age Of Apocalypse and One More Day never happened. That would undo Infinite Crisis and Final Crisis, and Countdown, and that would also undo Civil War, Civil War II and House Of X/Powers Of X. It's not perfect, but it's a start.

Growing up we had an obviously sexist statement we would make as young boys: "girls ruin everything.
Sorry ladies, we DID shortly grow out of it .. we of course changed our opinions over time, but what we really meant was, every single time parents and teachers demanded we let girls play, little sisters, classmates, with whatever we were doing, the rules had to change, often the entire activity, to accomodate them. Sure we were throwing dirt clods at each other, but the next thing it was literally a tea party?... Not cool.
Of course, once they started to hit puberty, they got priority in baseball because they got the height and development and coukd kick ass, and ultimately we learned to respect that, but the situation changed again, persisting in our hobbies, or when girls discovered boys, turning to ostracization in, or due to our hobbies..
We learned in a more nuanced sense that there are those boys and girls who want to play, those who liked the activity as it is, from D& D to stick fighting, and amongst those, those rare, oft misunderstood visionaries who saw the potential for even greater games or saw a chance to add to it, and of course, there were those who didn't like it as is, wanting various changes to the rules, some of them unpopular some necessary but buzz kills, and finally, those dreaded induviduals who wanted everybody to play an entirrly different game or activity andvtried to force it. There were also those who crticised you for playing it at all.
It wasn't "girls ruin everything" at all, it was "not all activities are for everybody, and shouldn't be." or more colloquially, "stay out of our stuff".
Sure it was gatekeeping, but really can you blame us? For the rest of my life I've seen niche activities destroyed upon the mainstream altar of "more popularity is good" even if it was unrecognizeable in the end, and an entirely different audience that attacked us for not being true fans becaysecwecdidn't like the new better version that they now liked (when they had been criticising it and us before)..
The curse is similar to "may you live in interesting times" but it has become "May the niche thing you love go mainstream"

They know the model Manga uses when it comes to the different genres they just don’t want to try it. They need established IPs and characters to get attention and have those fans to blame when they fail. Anything they do original will not sell. Oh yeah, they also don’t have the ability to be that creative. Lol

@@user-tc7gd5fq1r How is it taking away? Supporting characters are necessary in order to tell a good story. MJ and Aunt May are two of the best examples. Both of them are important to Peter in all the right ways. They are his family and ground him as you stated. Not every character can be the main character and this is what the current writers do not understand.

Slice of Life, oh God now I'm getting a bad feeling about why they've been aging Damian Wayne so fast. They want to catch him up to John as quickly as they can so then he can come out as bisexual to and they start dating each other soon after and when John dumps his current boyfriend Jay Nakamura because of reasons Damian and John will celebrate by blowing each other on the first issue of their new ongoing title Romantic Super Sons

My hero academia has more than 100 million copies in circulation across 40 volumes. It is the top superhero comic in the world at the moment. It does have some slice minor slice of life alements, the main focus are people trying to become heroes. The best xmen books probably can't even get a tenth of its market and that is marvel/dc core audience.
Slice of life already has its own following and they don't care about the day to day live of a superhero and it will be about superheroes if it's marvel and dc

Wrong on alot of things, but I'm just gonna point out "Superman's Girlfriend Lois Lane" sold very well, and you know what most of it is still entertaining because it's well written. Is there some really stupid issues once in awhile, yes and those issues are very stupid, But for the most part the stories are fun, funny, entertaining and well written. You can fight me on that (and climate change), but one thing we can agree on Superhero Comics should be action based comics first.

When spice life stories are just about hanging out at Starbucks but with only poc or alphabet characters proliferating the place they are not spice of life but agenda driven.....at best the spice of life was the breather story between adventures not the focus of being lazy and slothful and how the world upsets the writer but a story that brought characters together then bam something bad happens like lois dieing in lex's earthquake and Superman feels for that moment weak like he was kicked in the balls....for we the reader know what he lost and is feeling since it was built up right ..
