I'm recently in the plant community so I am learning a lot each day. Something I have realised lately is the over the top hype for variegated plants in the plant community? So plants are basically "cultured" to have variegations, sold for a ridiculous amount when from an evolutionary perspective, variegations are (often) the least functional part of a plant. Particularly, the white variegated plants (thai, marble pothos) are very slow growers because they lack chlorophyll. So that's basically like paying a fortune for a plant that's not as functional lol it's like paying more for less product. I'm finding that. variegated plants are the ripped jeans of the fashion community lol

I'm excited for my burle marx variegata to arrive and I've wanted a jose buono/imbe for a while but other than that I'm fine with normal white variegated or unvariegated plants :D
Not a fan of bob see or tortum (it just reminds me of a dried up sago palm that HATED me and whatever I did to it), in the same way with obliqua but I can appreciate how they might be for others.

I'm a sucker for anything with variegation. I have a Jose Bueno for years. I got it locally in Florida, before plants became a thing again. Mine is growing up a tree. I dug a piece up and brought it into the house, where it is making its way up a pole, with huge leaves. Very rewarding. I would love a Thai, which is way out of my budget. I am also hungry for the variegated Philodendron Billietiae, which is way-way out of my budget. I remember, before the current trends, many of these plants were dirt cheap in Florida. A friend just gave me an alocasia odora variegata, which I love. I remember when this plant was just another nursery plant. I have a Mickey Mouse alocasia (variegated), which is now selling for big money. The same friend recently gave me a cutting of Hoya Kerrii (variegated). I had one grow up a trellis and flowering. When I moved from that house 15 yrs ago, I took so many plants with me, but didn't take a cutting from the hoya. I had so much to do, I thought I would just buy another one when I had the time. Little did I know. I'm 60 yrs old, and I worked at a plant shop when I was a teen. So many plants that were just familiar and ordinary, are now rare. I'm trying to collect plants from my youth. It's not that I'm trying to recapture my youth, I'm trying to recapture the beauty I experienced from being around them, but have been denied because of the current prices.

Up to last year, most flowershops in my country were still selling run-of-the-mill products with little diversity. At some point, I began my search for the unique. It all began at a small nursery near my workplace. I already had some interest in Hoyas and aroids. I began to spot new aroids at this nursery, and then more species at a nursery outside town. Though the first nursery is not the primary grower, therefore a bit more expensive, it is more under the collector's radar. That made things easier to get. Some plants, however, are a way too expensive, and with some patience I expect local growers to bring down the price. My prediction: Hoyas will soon follow.

This is off subject of your video, which I so so enjoyed btw but I just want to say, I would LOVE to see your shop! I live in America so I can't order from you (yet) but I would just love to see it and I think it would be a great video idea to give us a tour of "The Rare Plant Shop". Show us around, maybe the day to day of things as it goes there. What do you think? PLEEEEEASE!!!

I love love love amydrium mediums! In the US the “blue” form has been being sold as silver amydrium medium or silver form. There is also a variegated form of the amydrium medium! I love them all! And they are fast growers! Well the variegated one not so much. Love videos like this thank you ♥️

So interesting to see that the philodendron tortum is rare in some places in the world! I’ve seen it in hardware stores for $10-20AUD for a couple of years now and I actually just picked one up a month ago! Finally I have a ‘rare’ plant 😏

I really really hope the Philodendron PP goes down in hype really soon, because the demand for it is just ridiculous at this point. (Also because I want a nice one for a decent price lol). A plant shop just listed 5 of them for $150 a pop, and they sold out in less than 2 minutes.

Oooooh! I'm really pumped for that variegated syngonium! I've been wanting one forever and I'm so hesitant to spend the cash on one of these high-demand plants! But, I have a few other syngonium so I'd be more at ease getting that one.
Also, would you do a video on sustainability and the houseplant market? Esp. from the grower/seller side of things. I've been thinking about that a lot but I haven't seen anyone do a video on that topic and I'd love to hear your take!

#19 - is the cebu blue pothos normal form that's variegated~

The other E. aureum variations also fenestrate when they grow upward.

My mind is blown...I realize at 40 years as a plant hobbyist I have no hope of collecting all the beautiful plants I would want to have around me in the years I have left to live. So I think I will just have to wing it from here...ha-ha! Seriously Kaylee Ellen you have out done yourself this time. Thank-you for the content.

I think there is a plant you may want look into called Crinum lily queen emma. It’s kinda rare in United States where a full size mature cost few hundred dollars of getting but the good price of them is when they are young or seedlings.

I love that yellow is coming back. I am leery about white because some turns brown and I don't know what will and what will not. I would love more mint variegation to get popular so I can find some!
