I got my Alocasia about five months ago and she has been the most stress free plant. It dropped one leaf when I brought it home and that was it. I bottom water with pretty hard tap water, and I had it about three ft from an east facing door, so it got a little sun burn but she didn't really mind it bc she keeps putting out new leaves😅😅 I have it in cactus mix with lots of perlite and some spag. I think it's the most laid back Alocasia X)

I just wanted to say that I never had any problems with any of my alocasias. I have the cuprea, regina, silver dragon, amazonica, macrorrhiza, stingray, zebrina... and I've never had any bad expieriences with them. They also never go in dormancy en spring out new leaves all the time. I consider all my alocasias as the easiest plants I own. I water them when I think about it and I live in Belgium so the climate isn't perfect either. It's weird how some plants do better with some people or in certain houses! But good luck to every alocasia owner! If they are happy they are so rewarding!

My very first plant was Alocasia macrorrhizos, picking up a small stem from outdoor. I named her Diana. She's extremely easy-going, tolerating high and low humidity, over and under watering, light and heavy soil, full sun and low light, etc. When I was in my twenties, I went for a business trip for two months without asking someone to take care of my plants, and she was still alive and well when I was back. Two decades have passed and she's still with me, giant and healthy, and she has produced numerous babies over the years. So I guess if someone's looking for an easy-going alocasia, Alocasia macrorrhizos it is. It's the easiest not just among all alocasias, but among the entire house-plant universe.

If anyone is looking for care on the dragon scale they seem to be a bit different. More succulent and like to dry out a bit more. Also potting in a aroid mix of potting soil, perlite, orchid bark and moss for a more airy mix looks well. Also potting in terra-cotta saved my dragon!

I'm my very limited experience in plant care, I've learned that dark leaves prefer less light (such as shade or in direct light) and light leaves prefer more light. This seems to apply to my indoor plants so far.

So like many people I only got into plants last year in lockdown 😂 I've been shielding and missed new plants so decided I was going to risk ordering a random 'green plant' in my sainsburys food shop and I got very sad and soggy alocasia 😂 it's leaves are browning. I always loved these guys but never bought one as I'm happy with my calathea being my problem babies 😂 I took it out of its pot to check the roots and they seemed mostly fine, I repot and it's drying up nicely but it still looks sad with the leaves browning more. I would really like to save this baby because it is absolutely stunning so I am watching your video and so far you seem to go into way more detail than anyone else Ive watched so thank you!

    Mainly orchid grower, transitioning into other tropicals;
Misting is very good for most tropical plants. Rot and fungal problems are the bane of an orchid collectors life. Small fans that don’t push leaves around but just move air change your grow space drastically. Plants can’t have the same single water drop sitting on the same exact spot for a day without consequence. You know this obviously (pathogens, fungus, edema...). I also use an aerosolized water sprayer (we barbers and stylist use them) it’s a gentler, finer mist. You could mist 5x a day inside and it would dry between each time and the plants love this! Also if you use 0 TDS water “pure” water of course this most closely simulated mist, and rain... Your channel is the best! Please keep sharing and thriving!

I'm afraid I might be cursing myself because I just purchased a rare Alocasia and I hope my experience continues to hold true, but I currently have four Alocasias and have not found them to be particularly difficult. My first one - Alocasia serendipity - was a bit frustrating at first to figure out, but it seemed to appreciate smaller, more frequent waterings and never letting the soil dry out, and now it's thriving and I can barely keep up with its growth!
Good luck to future growers! I find them to be a super rewarding plant because it is a lot of fun to watch the new leaves start to emerge!

I have shared my flat with a group of Alocasia Portodora for a year. They each are at differing stages of maturity in the same pot, which provides a great show. The older plant produces a leaf just under 50cm along the spine. In summer, I can enjoy up to 3 leaves per plant at one time, which I am very proud of. The best thing I have done is potting them in a tall 75cm self watering pot with a 7.5 litres storage. This type of Alocasia is very forgiving and can thrive in direct sunlight provided you keep the tank full. Its like having a little bit of Amazonia in your living room!

Just a different point of view here. I found for both alocacia and calethea if they don't do well in soil, take the out put them straight into water for a couple of weeks and then move them to semi-hydro leca. I have had to rescue a pink dragon alocacia, white star calethea and calethea ornata due to spider mites, over watering or not enough humidity. They are now thriving. I do have 4 other alocacia in regular soil (Chunky well drained mix) in Bright northern light (I'm in Texas) and one under a covered area outside facing south. All of them looking good and loving life. So far, no casualties and hope to keep it that way.

I’m pretty sure they came in that way because my zz plant also got them positioned in another room with the window facing the same direction . I had my frydeks near a humidifier too. My point being the first thing I noticed were yellow spots scattered over some leaves. Later I saw webbing. They’ve been treated and quarantined. I must say this is the most helpful (and inspiring) video on alocasias I found so far. Thank you! ☀️ My alocasia curly bambino died almost two months ago 😢 (initially I thought it went dormant, but it turned out that I overwatered it after it lost its leaves and it simply rotted away...), and I decided to wait with getting another alocasia until spring comes. Now - I'm tempted to try again, this time with A. Polly. I've never had any problems with my marantaceae plants so far * touch on wood * (I have 2 calatheas, 2 ctenanthes, 1 stromanthe, and 1 maranta) even though they're known for being difficult and finicky. Maybe I should give alocasia a second chance...

I almost killed my huge alocasia zebrina that I bought in a multistore for 12€... It had like 12 majestic leaves and one by one they became yellow and I had to remove them. There were only 2 leaves left. They where the center ones and the bigger. Now I'm having a little baby leave from that one and I just bought a Amazonica and a Lauterchiana. I hope they survive! Thanks for your tips!

Thanks for making this video. I have what I believe is an African Mask alocasia and I’ve nearly lost it a couple of times now. I seems my house is just too cold and they go dormant in winter. I did have luck with planting it in a upright 40 gallon fish tank as an indoor terrarium. It really thrives in there. I moved it out because it got so big but I guess it’s time to move it back

I'm amazed how well my Maharani is doing. I found less is more. It sits in a bright corner of my bedroom in a self watering pot. In fact, it's doing so well, it now has at least 4 flower buds busting from the center. Not the prettiest of flowers I have to say. Almost alien looking. But it's telling me it's healthy. My Q is, what to do when the flowers have died off? Should I cut the stem back? I don't want to hurt the plant as a whole. Yet, I feel if left alone the plant itself and leaves will suffer. I'm also not sure if it's gotten to big for it's pot. It was mentioned it likes to be confined. But how confined? When is it time? I suppose, if it's do well, I should just leave well enough alone.

I have an Alocasia Cullculata and I don't know if I just got a super resilient one but the one I have is impossible to kill. I had it growing in pure water for a few years when I first got him. I then put him in a super dark corner (he was fine). I transplanted him to soil (which led to a bunch of yellowing but he recovered), then moved him back to my window with a bit more light. Didn't water him for 2 months (vacation + friend not watering properly) and his leaves started yellowing and drooping and eventually fell off. I've put him outside in the summertime and his leaves burnt pretty badly from the sun (oopsie), he was again severely under watered (another vacation + different friend with equally bad watering habits) and started drooping, lost leaves and then completely "died". After his "death" I said a prayer and put him in my unheated garage over a full Chicago winter thinking I would recycle the soil come springtime. When spring time came, I picked up the pot and was surprised to see shoots growing out of the bone dry dirt. I re-potted him in a pot WAY too big with bad potting soil and no drainage hole (was all suppose to be temporary) and he started growing very lush, green and very tall. Last year I completely decapitated his 3 inch diameter stalk in the Fall and left him with no leaves, just a stump. He started growing again in the Spring. It's been 3 years and he's still in the horrible dense soil that I overwater (sometimes he just sits in wet, muddy soil) with a big pot and no drainage hole. It's been 3 years since and he's never looked better. Huge leaves, lush, deep dark green, shiny, plump, no brown or yellow anywhere. I've had this plant for about 15 years in total and nothing I've done to this plant has made it skip a beat. Never had any bugs, no diseases, nothing. He just grows and is the easiest plant I've ever owned.

Hi! I have an alocasia polly that I've recently repotted, and I'm sad to say that she's no longer doing so great. All foliage was green prior to repotting, but since repotting, several leaves have experienced browning/yellowing around the edges. I thought that this might be a symptom of root rot at first, so I ended up removing it from the pot once again and examining the roots. (I believe that at least a solid month passed between this and the initial repotting.) I removed all the soil. To my surprise, the roots looked entirely healthy. I divided the plant during this process as well because I wanted to have another plant incase this one didn't make it. This was about 3 weeks ago.
The plant hasn't looked any better since, and in my panic and frustration, yesterday, I repotted my plant once again into a slightly larger pot. It was extremely root bound (wrapped around the outside of the soil several times over) so I thought that maybe I'd finally found the solution to the problem. It has now occurred to me, though, that what the plant might really be experiencing is transplant shock. The roots were tampered with quite a bit, especially when I divided the plant. I feel very bad about the ordeal, as I've realized that in my efforts to help my alocasia, I have probably hurt it.
Anyways, do you have any recommendations for helping alocasia recover from transplant shock/root damage? Do you think that my plant might still recover? Sorry for such a lengthy post. Thank you!

honestly just leave it alone 😭 it def sounds like transplant shock and every time you shocked your plant without giving it time to recover you prob made it worse. i’d water it one final time after repotting and leave it alone, even if every single leaf drops, and water carefully while you wait bc you def don’t want root rot and have to repot again😭 as long as the root system is still alive she’ll reproduce new leaves 🕺🏾

My first alocasia was a Silver dragon. I bought it last year, in between there was winter, drop in temperatures, long periods without heating (because the landlord seems to be incompetent). It had one leaf unfurling as I got it, and it stuck there.
But as the building started to warm up again, the leaf opened finally (like in February this year). Since then I bought a black velvet, a cuprea red and a dragon scale for a bit longer. And now I also have an Azlani, a Polly and the tiniest frydek variegata that I hope to be able to grow.
The 4 that I have for a bit longer are all giving me new growth, they don't seem like they're suffering of anything at the moment (although I just sprayed them with neem oil because a calathea that was pretty close to them got pests, so to be sure, even if I didn't see any, I sprayed them too).
This morning, as the sun shone on the window, I had 30°C where they are, now we're back at 23°C. And I have an humidifier running all the time to keep the area humid (when it stops, it drops back super fast to 25% )
I guess there are plants that suits a person better. I mean, I managed to kill a philodendron scandens brasil, without any pest involved. But my alocasias are fine.

I have one Alocasia and that's the Grey Draonscale. I personally found him super easy to care for.... It gave me three baby corms and I've since then propagated them and threw them into moss. One has finally unfurled a baby leaf and looking gorgeous!
I did have a fungal issue months back because I sprayed it quite often when the weather was damp and cool in my room. I had to cut off 3/4 leaves. I think by doing so my plant went into a good kind of shock and actually the newest leaf is MUCH bigger than the old one and has three new growths as well! Overall, very simple. I find they are thirstier than other plants, but so important to give them a good aroid mix. Their roots will be happy. Ive a Insta if anyone is interested in seeing the progress!

I have a polly/amazonica in a shallow pot and it's pushing up shoots like my sansevieria. And I made the mistake of thinking the polly was easy because they are so abundant in nurseries here in U.S. Almost lost it until I added the humidifier and watering more. It's a happier plant now. I've always considered myself a relatively successful grower, but the secrecy and need for fast turn over with weed has created a completely different method, having said that, all of the new techniques I've discovered in relation to house plants has drastically modified the way I go about growing my weed. Hi Kaylee and all.
I live in Scotland and I’ve just pruned 2 leaves from my Alocasia zebrina. It seems to be doing very well. There are 5 stems and a new shoot coming through, now but I don’t know whether to re-pot or not. The plant is nearly 2 foot tall and the 2 biggest leaves about 10 inches long. I’m wondering whether it will be okay and what to do since the bigger leaves are straining a bit, bending towards the floor. This might be a silly question but I am new to plant care, generally speaking.
    Thanks for your help
