  • Testing out a drain cleaner that I picked up at Lowe's. I wanted to clear a clogged drain without taking the pipes apart or hiring a plumber.

Damn good job and explanation brother. You’re saving people lots of money with plumbers wanting to gouge your eyes out with an expensive bill, just for an easy fix. Great explanation and it worked great for me too, thank you.

Thanks for your comment MrCarlitosway713. As long as you follow the directions on the bottle you are golden. I've had some plumbers trolling the video because people could potentially damage their plumbing if they go nuts.

Small technical critique which doesn't really have any effect on the quality of the video - the drain cleaner that you have used only contains potassium hydroxide (KOH) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH), both of which are strong *bases* , not acids. Although they are not acids, they are also corrosive and need to be handled with care, which you did. Cheers

I had half a jug of the hair clog remover by instant power (red bottle) but I have no idea if it was actually the chemical, or if i just poured regular water down

200 for a drain company or over 2,000 for a plumber, decisions decisions, what to do. I wouldn't ruin my house to send someone else's kid to college.

    They can melt plastic pipes

According to Al's Plumbing. A chemical drain cleaner is safe for all pipes with the exception of Copper. The solvent will not immediately damage copper, but allowing it to sit idle for long periods of time in copper pipes has shown to speed up corrosion. When it comes to PVC or other types of pipes it is totally safe as long as it is used as directed. In this situation, allowing it to sit for 1 hour is totally harmless.

As a plumber- acids are fucking horrible for pipes. Lye is 1000 times better as it doesn't damage the pipe. Also drain cleaning chemicals only work to a certain degree. Pipes also aren't rated for the temperature of boiling water!

Thanks for your feedback. We always appreciate a "professional" opinion though your tone is a little harsh.
The goal of the video was to determine if the drain cleaner would resolve a clog in our home, and it worked.
According to Al's Plumbing and the PVC Manufacturer Roscom there is no detrimental effect from drain cleaner on PVC or other types of pipes if used correctly. (Anyone with Copper drain lines should be cautious though).
As for the excessive heat from boiling water. You are correct. Most PVC is only rated to 70° C which is what hot water typically runs at in a home. Boiling water at 100° exceeds that and will cause the pipes to soften a bit. Fortunately the water drained immediately and no harm was done.

@@ThisGuyProductions im not to worried about tone, i worried about people pouring a ton of this crap down their drain and damaging copper or cast iron pipes as i see it every day. i also see constantly the issues this kind of chemical creates when it doesnt work and leaves pipes full of acid that a plumber then has to take apart getting on himself and other surfaces. the drain cleaning manufacturer can make any claims they want but when your a plumber and youve seen pvc melted by drain cleaners, copper pipes damaged aswell as cast iron and stainless/chrome surfaces in lav/k.s's you kind of dont believe it anymore. pro tip- water also doesnt run in a home at 70c it should cap out at about 60 tops. scalding is a thing we work to protect home owners from, thus thermostatic shower valves being the norm today.

@@MrCarlitosway713 that's cute because i charge 99.50/h. if $100 to have your drain cleared without damaging your pipes is too expensive for you, you're not the type of client I want anyways. Not every plumber is a sleeze bag but nice try. I also said use lye instead, can you not read? clearly not.
