Maurice Sendak. Wow, where do I start? He is an amazing inspiring man, whom is on of, if not THE, best authors of all time. Without him, I would not want be a a author. He really understood what childhood is, sometimes happy, sometimes mysterious, and sometimes dark. He is a great, good hearted man. He is up there with Shakespeare and Edgar Allen Poe. Rest in peace Maurice, one of the best people on earth.
He gives very good advice on how you can be creative by following Schubert's example of finetuning and putting boundaries on how you can express yourself, and then creatively getting the most out of it. Chomsky makes a similar description regarding human creativity, or what it is that humans "do" that makes them so unique and interesting, and one of them is constraints - if you imagine a completely plastic environment, that adapts to its surroundings completely, it would be nothing but an imitation of what is around it. There must be some built-in constraints, restrictions, in order for what we would describe as creativity to occur. You have to understand that Sendak himself, who wanted to be a musician, had to fight all the way to find his way of expression given that he was crippled (in his mind) with being unable to express himself in precisely the idealized way that he would prefer.
What a great interview of a great children’s author. What a joy!
Yeah, Maurice Sendak is one of the very best authors and also one of the best creative minds and people of all time...
