I usually wait until a season is finished before starting it so I can watch at my own pace, so I appreciate you sticking with the show when so many other reviewers seem to have bailed early on. The main thing that made me interested in the show was Travis Fimmel, since I was a big fan of his work on Vikings, so I'm glad to hear he was a highlight of this.
Excellent point you made is that rewatching gets you more involved, Easter eggs all over the place. Possibly that is the reason for high streaming numbers, repeated viewings. Like they are shifting to Arrakis!
"Dune Prophecy" was definitely more of a sequel to the BH/KJA "Great Schools of Dune" book trilogy. The oldest Javicco was in any of the books was roughly the same age as Pruwet Richese in "Dune Prophecy". The flashbacks were adapted from the "Great Schools of Dune" trilogy, though. The most referenced portions were actually from "Mentats of Dune" (not "Sisterhood of Dune"), funny enough. Check the Synopsis: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mentats_of_Dune. Yes, there were some changes (in the flashbacks), but nothing out of the ordinary for book to screen adaptations. If we claim this series so far has been a radical re-write of BH/KJA lore, then Villeneueve did the same by writing out Paul's first son (before the twins), eliminating Jamis' wife, changing when Paul learned he was a Harkonnen, keeping Alia as a fetus, and etc.
For me as a book fan, it was great from start to finish. It needed some more work with the pacing in the first episodes, where I agree the episodes should have been longer. The ending was a bit rushed imo, but consider just 6 episodes its understandable. For normies I do understand its a slow burn in the beginning, and dvelve into the deeper Dune lore. Wich is why it needed to be longer and more episodes. Certainly people should give it 3 episodes to see if it catches your attention, theres alot more to explore :)
I tried watching this show but the costumes (mainly the male ones) and most of the sets were legit early 2000’s sci fi channel level and I just couldn’t handle it. So I left at episode 3! 😂
Didn’t know this show was happening until you started reviewing it. I’m super against film/tv show shared universes. I don’t really watch shows but love movies and don’t want to feel like I’m missing out on parts of a story because I didn’t want to watch a whole tv series as a supplement to a movie series. I think it’s strange that the industry is moving in this direction. Do you think it’s a bad thing for the movie industry?
I reeeally hate when there is “homework” outside of a film series. I don’t necessarily think it’s a bad thing for the movie industry, but definitely a concerning symptom of the shift towards steaming & how studios will churn out low quality content for money
I mean it's not bad, but it's nowhere near Denis's 2 films! No emotional depth, disjointed & weak screenwriting, sloppy direction, not many genuine character writing, abrupt flashbacks here & there and many more mistakes. But yes ep 6 was really engaging and Emily Watson was phenomenal!
I haven't watched the show. Not in any hurry. I can always watch them before Season 2 comes out. This wasn't appointment Television like House of Dragon or The Penguin. I have been enjoying Skeleton Crew.
I love the Dune universe, its the star wars for adults I crave. The Series was OK but I feel empty, I'm not quite sure what they were trying to say or to get to. The Expanse kinda "ruined" things for me, making watching these shows very hard to appreciate as I keep wanting similar level of quality. Dune: Prophecy is fine, but again not much effort is placed in character building and motivations, its all very hidden and obscure. I also found there were too many pointless characters with little to no character development, like the Atreides Sword Master that is basically a mcguffin to be used, even the princess is mostly an insert, but we know not much at all about most people, which is my main criticism of this shows since I dont really care about anyone, making it hard to be invested.
The Finale didn't win me over. For me it continued the middling quality with some aspects of the episode being great but most being boring or poorly presented. The action sequences are staggeringly amateur for an HBO production. I also really wasn't a fan of the implication of where fear is the mind killer derived from. However the sequence on the ice was depicted well. Overall a season 2 could certainly improve what they have built, but as a massive Dune fan this was a dissapointment. 6/10 show for me. Coming off two 10/10 films that's a massive drop in quality.
Great review Sydney! I think this season sure is some hits and some miss but nowhere terrible. Definitely the weakest comparing to the recent Dune films but I thought it was ok. Have a happy and healthy New Year!
Watched it and can't recommend it for anything. It's slow, characters are thin and unremarkable, no world building, no gee wiz future stuff, and as far as I can tell there's really no point in the story at all. Seems like 10,000 years of seperation amount to nothing in the Dune universe as nothing looks to have changed.
Might have to pick this back up when season two comes around. I didn’t feel engaged after the first few episodes. Time might change that Thanks for the reviews🫡 hope you do them for season 2
Couldn’t watch anymore after episode 1, that ish was GARBAGE and way too slow lol. Hope it got better but I was out unless I heard some hype and I didn’t hear anything
the series is alright to good, but there are some dumb decisions like all face dancer build up to nothing, that was soo stupid, or when the princess and the astraides are fighting and than they exchange a look like "wohooo" and i was, really? a more serious show would never do a corny thing like that, and another thing i am not big fun of old valia, idk why tbh, its personal, i dont like that actress, the young valia is awsome but the old one.. meh... i think it lacks charisma
I did feel a bit conflicted about how “evil” Valya is supposed to be. She does some really irredeemable things but i get the feeling they want us to sympathize with her in some small way
The Sydney Dune recap finale….ill miss this
😭 thanks for humoring me lol

I didnt watch the first season I.m debating more learning towards not watching but I might trying to take your advice
Very tired of these 6-8 episode seasons of shows that take 2-3 years to make

Agreed!! I didn’t get all the way through The Expanse but what i did watch was really great.
Correct me if I'm wrong but has a Dune Messiah movie been officially confirmed for 2026?
Im not sure if its 2026 but its definitely confirmed!!
@SydneyVolpe 2026 is what I've heard though. Specifically on December 18

HNY 🎉 Nice to see a sci-fi show get renewed. What was your fave tv show in 2024?

They spend money on this shit but takes 4 years for one season of house of the dragon😂
