That was a perfect example of bureaucracy, passing the buck resulting in a total Charlie Foxtrot. Shows also how important money is more important than human life. Sad n disgusting. I can't imagine how disappointed and dismissed the crew felt at scene.
I will tell you if these guys asked for a helicopter. There is a good reason. I have worked with hotshots, repell teams and strike teams, and they are some tough individuals. They will leave nobody behind and if they could have packed him out they would have. Tough situation.
Is there something i’m missing? For a sprained or possibly fractured ankle, why not carry them out? They already had built a litter, (or could have had one hiked in) and had one team on the trail and four repellers who were about to leave. Just Leave your gear behind pick it up tomorrow. That heli costs about $24,000 per hour to run. 2-4 healthy men in good shape should be able to carry a litter just take turns and breaks. Probably would not have taken more than 8 hours or cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Was an atv not an option? I am not surprised no one wanted to be responsible for risking a 30 million dollar heli and 4 crew lives to fly into a smoky fire at night for a sprained ankle
They are three miles up a trail in rough terrain with a possibly fractured ankle and no pain management. According to the Incident Response pocket Guide (IRPG) "In rough terrain, at least 15 workers will be required to carry a stretcher" (p.114). While possibly a borderline case, calling for a helo is certainly within the guidelines they are trained to.
you have obviously never carried a litter with an actual adult on it. it's extremely exhausting on just flat open ground. I can't even imagine doing it up hills and over obstacles. I can tell you that 4 healthy men is not enough. Those guys will be absolutely smoked in a very short time.

If this is abbreviated, I would hate to see what a full length version is. Very slow moving.
Appreciate the feedback. I get it. Help me out. What would you leave out to help move things along?
Lane Lamoreaux crickets....................

How horrible. I hope ALL you dispatch centers Have Learned your Terrible SHORT COMING, "lazy buck passers"
8+ hours for medical.... wow.

Thank God, the injury was minor, if a roller or a snag had caused a crushing injury, the patient would have been in dire straights.
Proof that if your cell phone doesn't work your screwed... learn how to deal with those problems before you have them
