  • Remember my Starry Nights short film? No? Well, it's here to watch (after this video): • Starry Nights, A Short...
I made that short film using the Hoya Sparkle filters, both 4x and 6x variants. These creative filters from Hoya make for very interesting results. But more importantly, they provide consistency and reliability to every image where you want to add a starburst effect (and maybe some soft diffusion). Something that is usually achievable with just a camera and a lens, but with much less control.
So, here's my review of the Hoya Sparkle filters (not sponsored) along with photo samples of course.
The very surprising thing is that these filters also work brilliantly for video. It's like creating the anamorphic flare effect but in a star shape rather than a line, which I think can be really cool.
And let me know what you think about the filters here in the comments section. I'd be very curious to know your thoughts.
Also, if you require any help creating this starry effect, I'll be happy to respond. :)
See you in the next video! Or in the previous one if you keep watching my content ;)
    Cheers!

Cheers David! I had seen something similar in the past but it looked a cheap gimmick. These are actually pretty cool, you only need to find a balanced subject so the image doesn't look too much "in your face" with all the stars ☺️ Of course I went a but overboard sometimes in the images shown here just to highlight what the filters could do.
Now I want to try them with portraits as well!

What would you suggest if I wanna achieve similar results while shooting from my phone?

Hey Ana. Apologies for the late reply.
There are options to mount a filter to smartphones too. They are often a combination of a case and a screw-in adapter to which you can plug the filter. Normally these adapters are small, I don't think I have seen any that goes wider that 52mm, so in order to use a filter like this Hoya Sparkle you will need another adapter ring from 52mm to whatever size you buy. So, there is an initial cost, but when you have such system in place you can use any filter on your smartphone, including the ND filters that always so important when you shoot video for example. Companies I trust that make this sort of system are Moment, Ulanzi and Smallrig.
In relation to the Sparkle, you get the best results in combination with a wide-angle lens, which should now be available in most smartphones. But it also benefits from the sensor size, so I'm not entirely sure this will get you the ideal results with the 1-inch sensor (or smaller) of a smartphone. It may be worth a try. And remember that the system I talked about above still works with any filter :) Hope this helps

Hey, no problem. I wish I had seen the question sooner but I haven't done many updates to my channel lately so I missed this completely, sorry
