I didn't go home for the holidays two years in a row. I have NO regrets. Unfortunately I live alone so I spent christmas day in bed. But I'm happy to work on the holidays. That's all I've been doing, working and chillling.

I didn't go for christmas this year. I was tired of feeling lonely and out of place with my husband's family, fed up of the snide, disrespectful comments and unloving atmosphere. I gave myself permission to stay away this year - and I loved it! And in future I foresee many more holidays being spent away from them.
I feel like they don’t have time to really gather their thoughts and say things that make sense. There are TONS of reasons why people wouldn’t spend the holidays with their family and the most obvious reason is that some family members are toxic and they can and will ruin the whole vibe. I would rather stay my ass home and watch Christmas movies then be with my “family” or people that I share the same blood with that mistreated me(I’m not saying this happened to me lol)

Yolee Rodriguez-Ray same here. My mom passed two years ago, also, and that was my holiday comfort home, so now it’s just spent in my home with my husband and three kids. What hurt the most was that there was two big holidays back to back, Thanksgiving and Christmas, and it was extremely hard to get through 😢

I actually have a cousin who didn’t see her grandparents for years bc they’re racist, and she was dating a black man. They were very nice to his face, but behind closed doors they were themselves. She said it didn’t matter that they were “nice” to him, knowing it was all fake she just didn’t wanna be around that.
A G you have to live for yourself. If she wants to date a black man because he is good to her then she should be able to do that. Not carry her racist parents views with her as she goes through life.
@Adrienne.. sometimes the dysfunction in the family becomes too abusive to where there is no respect when you get into the household still as an adult.. so you just have to step away and create your own wonderful family and choose the decision of not going anymore. I relate on Adrienne on this one. I'm Filipino and we have hispanic tradition on our blood. I can't imagine being away from my family on a holiday. Family matters to us and even tho there are those "annoying family" members it just wouldn't be the same if you spend it with your friends or other people.

My husband & I are military and we are in Hawaii. we are also from 2 different states! It’s so hard to pick where to go with out hurting the other ones families hearts. It’s been 1 year since we seen my family but his family has came to visit! But it’s our second time not spending holidays with any of them! We don’t necessarily “don’t want to go home” plane tickets are so expensive and picking where to go is so hard with such short amount of time the army gives him! So we just choose to spend the holidays together in Hawaii alone as a family of 3- our dog💗
Just cause they’re family doesn’t mean they care about you. Some people have really toxic families and they have every right to not want to go home for the holidays. I know for me I dread going just cause of my anxiety. I don’t mind my family but I can’t do parties. It doesn’t matter if it’s with friends or family I cannot do parties. Its always only been my mom, siblings and myself so we absolutely always love getting together every single time! But I feel like Mexican/Hispanic families are more thankful and loving than American families. We wouldn’t ever put an elder in a retirement home. They get taken care of in a loving home because they took care of us!
I’ve stopped abusing alcohol for 3 months now and my family is a trigger so I did not come home for the holidays and it was one of the best decisions I made this year.

I have NEVER enjoyed the fakeness of family holiday gatherings... When I was younger I had no choice, my parents dragged me to two households for 2 dinners for Thanksgiving, Christmas, & New Year's Day... It was not fun at all so I vowed "when I grew up" I was not going to celebrate all the holidays with both families... I put them on rotation...lol..🤣. One side of my family on one holiday, the other side of my family on the next holiday, & the last holiday BY MY DAYUM SELF.... That all changed when I got married... Now, If we don't get an invite from friends (cuz you know family ain't gonna extend an invite), we spend the holidays together...just the two of us & we are just fine with it 😎

This was one of my worst Christmas ever. All because my cousin decided to yell and attacked my sister and I minutes before everyone else had arrive. And we all had to sit there and act like one big happy family for the next several hours. I always knew my extended family wasn’t perfect but I pushed through cause “it family” but that was the limit. Still a few day after Christmas and I’m still shaken up my all that my cousin said to us (in our own house, none the less). Set boundaries, set them soon and don’t be afraid or feel bad to do so. 28yrs married and I love both our families. But we decided from the start Christmas day was ours. We're not travelling Christmas and our children when they were little were always going to wake in our own home on Christmas day. We'll see them before or after, but not on Christmas eve or Christmas day. My sons are men now and I have always said if you marry make Christmas day your own and don't be pressured to travel back and forth. It's stressful. My mum found that hard at first because we are close, but she understood.
I used to look forward to sharing life updates from and to my uncles, aunties, nieces, nephews, cousins and etc coz I'm in school and don't have much time to call or text them more often, but rather the older folks in my family look forward to all the negativity that has happen with everyone to talk about. So now I just stay in our apartment with my dad and brother cook whatever we want to eat for the holidays and each of us invite few of our friends who doesn't have their families overseas with them to our home and it has been peaceful 🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏

This is a topic I can totally relate to. I grew up in a home where I had a mom and a dad who argued a lot and there arguments seem to escalate even more around the holidays. Since moving out years ago, I have come home for the holidays and I remember my parents arguing then too. The second reason why I don’t go home anymore for the holidays is because not once since I moved out have my parents ever attempted to visit me. And I think of all the efforts that I made by taking leave and spending my hard earned money on plane tickets to go visit them. I think the last time I went to visit them for the holidays was maybe Christmas of 2011 or 2012. So that’s my reason for not going home for the holidays.
when i don’t make it .. i feel like i am missing out but when i am there i feel like i have forgotten over the year why I actually chose not to go. My family can be toxic and my peace of mind is super important to me.

I relate on Adrienne on this one. I'm Filipino and we have hispanic tradition on our blood. I can't imagine being away from my family on a holiday. Family matters to us and even tho there are those "annoying family" members it just wouldn't be the same if you spend it with your friends or other people.

I've been out the country for 3 years now & I miss my family. I sat in a room upstairs in my house & cried on Christmas.
My husband & I are military and we are in Hawaii. we are also from 2 different states! It’s so hard to pick where to go with out hurting the other ones families hearts. It’s been 1 year since we seen my family but his family has came to visit! But it’s our second time not spending holidays with any of them! We don’t necessarily “don’t want to go home” plane tickets are so expensive and picking where to go is so hard with such short amount of time the army gives him! So we just choose to spend the holidays together in Hawaii alone as a family of 3- our dog💗
Just cause they’re family doesn’t mean they care about you. Some people have really toxic families and they have every right to not want to go home for the holidays. I know for me I dread going just cause of my anxiety. I don’t mind my family but I can’t do parties. It doesn’t matter if it’s with friends or family I cannot do parties.
It doesn’t have to be a financial or schedule conflict. If people simply feel it’s unhealthy for them to be with their family they have every right to do that and shouldn’t be judged for it
Its always only been my mom, siblings and myself so we absolutely always love getting together every single time! But I feel like Mexican/Hispanic families are more thankful and loving than American families. We wouldn’t ever put an elder in a retirement home. They get taken care of in a loving home because they took care of us!
I’ve stopped abusing alcohol for 3 months now and my family is a trigger so I did not come home for the holidays and it was one of the best decisions I made this year.

I have NEVER enjoyed the fakeness of family holiday gatherings... When I was younger I had no choice, my parents dragged me to two households for 2 dinners for Thanksgiving, Christmas, & New Year's Day... It was not fun at all so I vowed "when I grew up" I was not going to celebrate all the holidays with both families... I put them on rotation...lol..🤣. One side of my family on one holiday, the other side of my family on the next holiday, & the last holiday BY MY DAYUM SELF.... That all changed when I got married... Now, If we don't get an invite from friends (cuz you know family ain't gonna extend an invite), we spend the holidays together...just the two of us & we are just fine with it 😎

This was one of my worst Christmas ever. All because my cousin decided to yell and attacked my sister and I minutes before everyone else had arrive. And we all had to sit there and act like one big happy family for the next several hours. I always knew my extended family wasn’t perfect but I pushed through cause “it family” but that was the limit. Still a few day after Christmas and I’m still shaken up my all that my cousin said to us (in our own house, none the less).
Set boundaries, set them soon and don’t be afraid or feel bad to do so. Good luck everyone.
28yrs married and I love both our families. But we decided from the start Christmas day was ours. We're not travelling Christmas and our children when they were little were always going to wake in our own home on Christmas day. We'll see them before or after, but not on Christmas eve or Christmas day. My sons are men now and I have always said if you marry make Christmas day your own and don't be pressured to travel back and forth. It's stressful. My mum found that hard at first because we are close, but she understood.
I used to look forward to sharing life updates from and to my uncles, aunties, nieces, nephews, cousins and etc coz I'm in school and don't have much time to call or text them more often, but rather the older folks in my family look forward to all the negativity that has happen with everyone to talk about. So now I just stay in our apartment with my dad and brother cook whatever we want to eat for the holidays and each of us invite few of our friends who doesn't have their families overseas with them to our home and it has been peaceful 🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏

This is a topic I can totally relate to. I grew up in a home where I had a mom and a dad who argued a lot and there arguments seem to escalate even more around the holidays. Since moving out years ago, I have come home for the holidays and I remember my parents arguing then too. The second reason why I don’t go home anymore for the holidays is because not once since I moved out have my parents ever attempted to visit me. And I think of all the efforts that I made by taking leave and spending my hard earned money on plane tickets to go visit them. I think the last time I went to visit them for the holidays was maybe Christmas of 2011 or 2012. So that’s my reason for not going home for the holidays.
when i don’t make it .. i feel like i am missing out but when i am there i feel like i have forgotten over the year why I actually chose not to go. My family can be toxic and my peace of mind is super important to me.
Woooow! I'm happy for Adrienne who has fomo of not spending the holidays with her family. I wish that was my case. They just need to find negative reasons why I don't go home instead of genuinely helping me to try opening up to them. I just don't feel happy and comfortable at home and sometimes I'm just busy in school. I don't know what I do wrong.
They’re blessed to love going home to their families. A lot of my relatives are toxic and mentally draining and unfortunately I don’t enjoy visiting them 😕
