Japanese hiphop from the 90s is the coolest thing ever. Japanese is not as easy to rhyme as English, and we don't have a rhyming culture. Furthermore, people doing HipHop in Japan had the image that it was just an imitation of America, and a lame one at that. They thought it was a clone of America and that the real thing was cooler. This was a generation that did not pay attention to such criticism and stuck to what they thought was cool. Because of them, HIPHOP took root in Japan. Especially in the 90's, there were many questions about how to reproduce overseas RAP in Japanese. It was a time when people were trying to figure out what kind of HipHop would suit Japan. It's imperfect, and yet it has its own Japanese quirks, which is really great.

@@claudiaficicchia446 I was hesitant to write this, because there is nothing but good vibes in these comments... but Nujabes is nothing special and fairly boring in terms of Japanese artists; songs like Luv(sic) have a bit of bounce to them, but people who listen to, "Japanese music," (ie: friendly for non-Japanese speakers, of which I am too so I'm not discriminating) like him for, "the mood he sets." People talk about how he's this, "Lo-Fi Master," which is almost depressing and again, boring. If you want actual great JAPANESE rap, where they rap about things that were important to their lifestyle and the country around them (and in their language, which even spit with anger/protest, still is a beautiful language), anyone on this playlist is great, King Giddra is excellent, basically aim for the kings of the 90s: they all worked together, they all were friends and they all tried their own style of things... and when they came together for something collaborative (like Shogen, the second track on this video), well, just listen to it: it's arguably the best Japanese rap song ever.

its tradition to come back to this video every few months
I’ve been listening to old Japanese hip hop and this is by far my favorite playlist of songs. I can’t find a better one

The golden generation of Japanese hip-hop.
I'm from LA grew up in 90s , this is so great, I'm so excited! Also being part asian grew up in LA this is so great. Imagine them doing the freestyle street rap back in the day then organizing to record.
This got me through work @2am
38:45 song I love, I have been hearing and loving these guys for years. NAOHIROCK AND SUZUKISMOOTH
Got love from philippines 🇵🇭
Old school is the best
I wonder if they found the samurai who smells of sunflowers.
I’m in a sort of Japanese Phase right now, so I am getting interested in different aspects regarding Japan, including music and I found this! It’s wonderful, blissfull
Respect to you Japan!
From Italy 🇮🇹
then you should listen to Nujabes and SCHA DARA PARR they are both on spotify
@@danteb3737 I’ll give it a try! Thanks
@@claudiaficicchia446 Yes, Nujabes would absolutely be a great place to start. Talented guy, may he Rest In Peace.
If you want actual great JAPANESE rap, where they rap about things that were important to their lifestyle and the country around them (and in their language, which even spit with anger/protest, still is a beautiful language), anyone on this playlist is great, King Giddra is excellent, basically aim for the kings of the 90s: they all worked together, they all were friends and they all tried their own style of things... and when they came together for something collaborative (like Shogen, the second track on this video), well, just listen to it: it's arguably the best Japanese rap song ever.
damn i remember the 4th song. used to listen to it from a cd i borrowed from tsutaya, but i can't remember what album it was. i believe it was a yamada-man album? not sure though.
its crazy how i was able to rediscover a song i liked with a total coincidence.
thanks for the upload.

I’m black and I love this music, the closest thing I have to be in Japan and you have delivered.
6:55 "Sora ni, sobieru, kurogane no shiro" Mazinger Z opening song reference
Mazinja Zetto!
I downloaded a bunch of these songs from Napster around 2000/2001. Haven't listened to them in years but still remember them especially the first one! I used to burn them to CDs before iPods came out! 💿

Thank you for the re-upload! I lost my shiee when I couldn't find it on my playlist! 😷
We dont understand what they are saying nothing, but we understand the flow, the intrumental feels, the smooth… we have the hood in the hearth, in da blood… thx Nicola

If this is actually from the 90s then I'm impressed. Absolutely legendary.

Shakkazombie is the winner for me, buddha brand comes second. Man these japanese rappers are so talented, i am a avid hip hop listener and i never knew there was japanese hip hop in the 90s. Now after listening to this it just made my day. Every single one is the winner and shakkazombie's beat deserves an platinum award
