From what I understand, the AF motor will move faster, the step motor system is able to run in a faster polling rate, and the processor in the lens is helping to do some data processing for the AF and OSS.

I just bought a 5T that has this lens but it didn't come with the usb to micro cable... would a generic one work? Also, it states on the Sony page that Win7 isn't supported... what could happen if I try it anyway? In addition, if I also intend to do the 3/19/14 NEX Camera Firmware on the same Sony website as well, which should I do first? Thanks
Hi, thanks for your comment. I couldn’t you that. What I could tell you is that After the firmware update, I haven’t seen any big improvements. My opinion is if you use this lens as your Main lens, then I don’t think it’s necessary to update it.
Hi, thanks for reaching out. Do you have the camera connected and in “USB Mode Mass Storage” and that the lens has Ver. 01 (for it to update to Ver. 02)? If not, it will not continue on the updater software. And also at the time of making this video, it worked on Windows PC only. Mac had some compatibility issues.
If you a have mutiple lens are you able update each lens? For ex. I have 3 lens. Will all the lens 3 lens firmware updates be saved on the camera or saved directly on the lens.

Hi, thanks for your comment. Yes, it should be perfectly fine with any Sony APS-C camera. On the Sony support website, there’s no mentioning of a specific Sony camera when updating the lens. So yes, it should be fine. Let me know how it goes.

I personally have owned Several cameras and lenses (from Panasonic to Olympus to Sony), and I’ve update their lenses and cameras without any issues. But if you google you’ll find cases of bricking too. For me, it’s like updating my iOS on my iPhone. Even though I know there is no bulletproof way to update, I just accept the process.

So, I have noticed that when zoomed all the way to 60, then switching focus (center focus) from foreground to background is a little bit faster even without half-pressing. This could just be me.
Hi, thanks for your comment. That’s strange, normally any lens update would be above 1.0. This lens update is 2.0. You may have something else going on with the camera which I don’t know. I don’t know if this would work, you could try to reset everything on the camera and see. Then try the firmware update again, if needed. But you’ll be losing all your camera settings. Do be aware. Again I’m not sure if it would fix the lens for sure. I just think it’s strange that you have a number less than 1.0. To initialize all the settings to the default settings: MENU → (Setup) → [Setting Reset] → reset or initialize.

how I press NEXT at the very first step, lens system software stops working. I tried multiple cables but nothing. I guess I will never update my lens!

yeah it wasn't working for me on the mac either so I just did it on my windows PC and it ran smoothly

I think this firmware tells the lens to also use the phase detect AF because there was only contrast based AF back when it released.
mine shown lens Ver.17. is it version 0.17 ?
