M8 you're an absolute legend! The wind took my camera and I thought the lens was smashed but thanks to this video I managed to get it working again. Really agree to the "no fun" part :-D Thanks!
This is what I needed - I looked all over my disassembled lens and couldn't figure out which piece was broken. Now that I know I can order the replacement ring. Thanks!
Thank you for this step by step video! I have no experience with cameras. I bought mine cheap at a garage sale and I think they sold it because they couldn't get the lens to work. I took the whole thing apart, found the broken piece glued it back, put it back together (which by the way, was incredibly hard!) And now it works. I'm so excited!
6:00 remark (when one need to sway a cog of zoom gear) was the most important in my case and helped to pull lens out of little barrel. When nothing has been broken, but camera can't recognise lens, almost surely the problem is in cogs between zoom gear and the motor. Jammed gear can be fixed by swaying it after you have already removed the controller and the motor.
This was really useful. I Found that the small black lugs that were not holding the lens in place were not working so I used a spacer made from a piece of aluminium foil to fix the ring in place.
Mine was jammed, and crooked at the front, I opened it up, took me like 5 minutes tops, got to the stage of removing the outer barrel, turned the lens upside down and I gave it a shake, a small clip fell out, put the lens back together and its working fine now. I urge you to give it a try, especially with how cheap this lens is, Sony repairs cost a fortune!
This is a great tutorial, and it helped me to understand the lens and feel more confident taking it apart. Quick question - what do they call the first part that you removed? The piece with the ribbon tape that mounts lens. Thanks!
Hi Eric, I have just done the operation :) ! 1. Remove the little sticker ring of the rim of the focus ring, revealing three little holes and the plastic lock-ring it sits on. 2. On this inner lock ring there is a 1cm piece which is a little more flexible. There should be a little gap to the left and right of it 3. Align one of the three holes of the focus ring with the left gap of the inner lock-ring, and use a small flat head-screw driver to lock the two in position. Then twist counter clockwise on focus ring for about 1cm 4. You will now be able to detach the focus ring + lock-ring. You should now be able to proper see the small little 1cm piece holding the lock-ring in place. This itself is detachable and only held in place by the same felt-ring like the rest of the lock-ring. 5. Simply flip it off gently and get in between the lock-ring and the focus-ring with a small flat-head screw driver. Not bend the plastic lock-ring gently and get it out. Make sure you don't break the little felt ring it is attached to. 6. Now you can clean both surfaces from sand. Use a Q-Tip. After re-grease slightly to assure proper motion. 7. The little black marks you see on the inside work together with an optical sensor. On my lense, half of my marks have been worn off because of the sand! I simply drew them back on with a marker pen. 8. Put everything back together. Clean the rim of the focus ring from any grease to make sure that the sticker ring will stick properly after. Took me about 20mins to figure out the mechanism and another 10min to clean the ring. Good Luck.
Wow, thank you for the Tutorial! This will definitely help someone else in the future! I sold the camera on Sunday, so I don’t have to do it anymore haha 😂
Great info, thx. At the 2:15 mark, the ring with the contacts you're removing is what I need to repair my EP Z 18 - 105mm G lens Model # SELP18105G. Any idea where I can purchase this part?
My kit lens makes a lot of grinding noise while zooming. Do you think if I replace the plastic ring that will fix it? It zooms fine and it focuses fine. It’s just noisy when zooming in or out. Thanks.
Nice attempt, but sadly it's almost impossible to see what you're doing even when fullscreen (I was looking for the rebuilding part). Next time better! Still appreciate your voice / commentary in general :)
thanks, heaps i will endeavour to do another take on this lens with a better setup for the camera i have built a rig that can sit above me while i work so that the camera is secure and i can just work. while i do more repairs i have 4 more lenses i have bought to do plus camera and more
Hi, thanks for your video -I've found it really useful. I've got stuck on the part at 7:20 minutes in - my ring doesn't seem to turn then stop like yours did - it just moves about 3 mm then stops. It doesn't look broken. I'd really appreciate any ideas!!
Hey i know its been a while since you made this vid. im wondering if you still have this lens or a broken one lying around if you could do me a solid. my lens's zoom switch assembly recently came apart. im unsure of exactly how to put it back together since i havent seen any videos with people repairing the little zoom switch. i have a spring and a contact metal switch type thing and i have no idea how they go. all i need are some reference pictures.
Thanks for the video, hell of an effort! ;^) All and all I did learn some good info so, thank you! please tell me, what exactly did you search for on ebay to find just the ring you needed for this fix?
i tear down my lens and up to 05:11 cant go any further because the ring is stuck. i give up and put everything to it's place and to my surprise my lens is revived. sometimes i'm amazed with my self
I don't get it. You also said that you replaced the ring. Like video clips, I ordered the internal tab and I would like to exchange the rings on the outside. I couldn't understand the ending of the tap. This is to remind you to replace the ring.
It's hard to follow, i didn't try it anyway, i don't have the ring to replace. But now i know what it is, the mistery is over, and thanks for that! Now try to find someone here in Chile who could help me. Be cool! Keep up ;)
Followed these directions; at the point where you apply pressure on the barrel sides to disengage the three pins, I wound up shearing off a ribbon cable aside from the one on the lens connector and the motherboard one that was attached to the barrel. Free advice on RUclips; you get what you pay for, alas.
sony PZ lenses are piece of shit. Lasted exactly 1 year, broke right after the warranty ended. I exchanged the plastic ring that broke, it made it work again. But lens would reinitialize itself every 7 seks, even if i am in a menu. The inside of it almost entirely PLASTIC (!!!wtf?). 400 usd for plastic?? + no support in Norway. To reapir it i gotta send it to other countries, and it costs a lot. AND you can not even update firmware on MAC... Cuz it is not compatable. Why? Cuz Sony does not give a fuck. I shattered the lens upon the concrete, with great delight. Almost did the same to camera house, but spared it due to the fact that i own 55-210 lens. If this one will malfunction on me too, i ll shatter it all at once. I m not dealing with Sony anymore.

I have the same problem. Any luck finding parts?
Thank you soooooo much!!!!!! I thought my lens was done when I dropped it, but I managed to fix it!!!!
You just saved me $900. Thanks!
This video gave me the guts to fix my own A5000 lenses that otherwise would've cost me around $ 350 CAD.. Thank you.
Lovely Brother :) I just fixed mine after sony service centre said its unfixable. Thanks a ton
2:35 how could you pull the lens that easy? mine is really stuck, the lens just won't extend before and after I disassembled it.
I just repaired mine!!!! Thank you so much for this

SO THE RING HAS TO BE GLUED TO THE BOTTOM PART? CAN YOU TELL ME PLEASE?

Thank you very much! You saved me a good chunk of change!

Great video. After reparation. No calibration needed?
Thanks for that! Helped me a lot!
I can't remove the lens from the ring, my lens is stuck. I can't extend as much as you.
This is a great tutorial, and it helped me to understand the lens and feel more confident taking it apart. Quick question - what do they call the first part that you removed? The piece with the ribbon tape that mounts lens. Thanks!
Thank You, you saved me a lot of stress
Do you have any information on how to remove the focusing ring from the barrel? Mine has a bit of sand in it from a fall which I'd like to remove.
Any idea How to Remove the Focus/zoom Ring? Got Some Sand Stuck behind it -.-

@@Eric-pi2rn I hope so :) ! If you happened to sell the lens together with the camera, maybe let the buyer know about the fix. Sure he'll be happy!
Good job
helped me out big time!

Thanks for the video and the link to the part. Bit ordered.
I have a question, my lenses has the same problem but I cant push it out like you have @:38 seconds.

Thanks for the detailed video - had the exact problem. Ring would just fall off due to broken tabs. Found on Amazon for $8. Works great now.
I dropped my camera yesterday and now it wobbles like crazy, moves on its own and doesn't work 90% of the time, so this will be a very helpful video.
thanks
