Lovely to see these bridges actually working being either raised or swung as most people who see them, unless operated on a daily basis, would probably never guess that they also move. Also a testament to those who built them that they are still working, absolutely brilliant, thank you forsharing.
That eerie mechanical noise throughout the video was very familiar from my time spent in downtown Tampa, but it took me a few moments to remember it was cars driving over the metal deck of the other bridges in the area.
I have witnessed the freight train crossing that bridge many times since I was a kid! I also like it when the train crosses the intersection of Kennedy Boulevard and Willow Avenue! It is the only four-way railroad crossing here in Tampa! After the train passes, the traffic on Kennedy usually gets the green light!
This is an important video capture! Poking around this bridge on 02/13/2023, I spoke with multiple locals (including a City of Tampa employee) who said that CSX no longer uses this trackage and thus the bridge is permanently locked in the up position.
Nice video. There is a similar type of bridge in Port Huron, MI and every time I go to that city it breaks my heart to think about the past railroads in that location. I always wanted to see that bridge operate, but never got a chance as the line was removed over 20 years ago and the bridge sits there rotting away along with the old ferry docks. Heartbreaking to see the loss of railroads in Michigan as it still continues with CXS removing another line out of Flint, MI, I enjoyed and thank you for posting this video.
When I was a kid in the 90s my dad would take me to the adjacent Curtis Hixon park (formerly part of the site of the old Tampa Art Museum) and we got to meet and sort of know the bridge tender. He was a very elderly fellow who I only knew by the name of "Brown" and he would park his truck in the gated pen.
Over a century old and still functional because; A) it was designed/built well and B) was properly taken care of. The latter is significant given the bridge's location on the Florida gulf coast. That humid salt air eats metal, especially the old iron and steel of a hundred year old railroad bridge. A salute to those who designed it, built it, and took care of it.
Awesome Video Alan! Glad to see that bridge still in use. I noticed there is a restricted speed across the span. Seagull at 4:30- "Look at me, I'm in Millenniumforces movie! Now i'm gonna make sure he hears me!" either that or he was telling trains not to cross because the bridge was going up. The seagull made me laugh!
+Freedomtowerman Productions I was thinking something along the lines of the seagull was stoked on the bridge raising. Like: "YAY! Humans come up with the coolest stuff!" ;)
BTW. I like that you show idiots running around crossing barriers in your intro. People think this is a joke to do they...but it's deadly serious ! I am a retired police officer from Florida (not that far from Tampa , as a matter of fact) When I was still working, the fine for going around a barrier, where you could either hear OR see the train, was $1500.00. No questions asked. It's probably more now...our state is broke and always trying to gouge the taxpayer....but that's another issue all together. Thanx for your videos !
thats true, but i guess they also wanted to put new rails in cuz the rails were getting outdated and the track itself was lifting up, the line is also used for Freight from Boston to NY
Very cool. I see the bridge tender only has to show up when needed. In the old days....the hay day of that bridge, I bet they had a tender there 24/7. What a dull..but important job.
here in sacramento ca we have 2 bridges that move #1the tower bridge that is a lifting bridge ,#2 the Ist that swings open and there both pretty to watch in action
Title: "CSX Train Crosses Historic Drawbridge Then Raises After" I watched the video several times, and I ever saw the train rising after it crossed the bridge. ;-)
Excellent video footage. BTW, what are those ghostly sounds? Oh! It must be the sounds of vehicles running on a steel meshed bridge floor, something we've long ago dubbed a "tickle bridge" because of the sounds it makes when crossing it.
Question:Why are so many semi's get smashed at RR crossings? Because they are driven by complete idiots as we see here. Don't try that stunt at home kids
The old bridge could use a coat of paint. Doesnt look like its been painted since 1915. Many years ago the A.C.L. had a railyard & freight depot on the Hillsborough RIver, on the other side of the bridge.
6:39 There is a counterweight on the far side of the span, near where it pivots, so that relatively little force is needed to raise the bridge. The rocker on which it pivots is also visible, as is the tower where the bridge operator works. 6:24 is a closer look at the rocker.
All that for one stinkin hopper. Hopefully it'll return with more cars. Allen you need to talk a street runner crew into giving you a cab ride. That would make an interesting video! Do it... that's your 2014 mission!
Charles Vanhoose What do you mean? The video shows what happens, the bridge is opened and the boat proceeds through. I'm sure the bridge operator knows when trains are due so won't open the bridge if a train is coming, so any boats wanting to go through will have to wait. The adjacent road bridge is also a drawbridge so it also opens to let boats through.
All that for a one car train, I've seen bridges that swivel 90 degrees to alternate between trains and water craft. That seems a whole simpler than this type of a drawbridge. Think of all the horsepower it takes to lift such a heavy load and how complicated it would be to maintain all the moving pieces. That's quite an achievement to keep it going after so many years. Any replacement parts forget about it

Alan, people built things to last, and this bridge is a testament to that very thought. Great video capture, Alan, you get to see that very often. :o)
Larry R Wendell Jr they sure did.
If you like bridges and trains, which I do, this video is a major win. Excellent capture and attention to detail. :)
Thank you
+Millenniumforce No, thank you! ;)
@@Millenniumforce did you know your wanted by the RUclips police
@@MillenniumforceWhy does this video also show the truck hitting the gate?
Nice shot Alan, the lift bridge over Delaware river was built 1896 and sees both freights and NJT Atlantic City trains 24/7.
Michael Williams Is it in IL?
That's a really neat bridge Alan. Good to see an old railroad drawbridge that is almost 100 years old still in use today.
Beautiful bit of engineering, Great vid, thanks very much.
Thank you for the comment.
This is an important video capture! Poking around this bridge on 02/13/2023, I spoke with multiple locals (including a City of Tampa employee) who said that CSX no longer uses this trackage and thus the bridge is permanently locked in the up position.
Great bridge and nicely put together video!

I clicked on your advertisement for the Days Inn. I didnt know they had one in Scranton. I am going there this summer. Good place to stay.

Nice, there are some old ones like this in Buffalo
Wide World of Trains NS has a 100 year old N&W bridge in Roanoke VA
Bufflao ny rocks
Beautiful bascule bridge
What a neat old drawbridge!!! Not many of them around anymore
Very cool video. Thanks for posting and have a nice day too.
Thank you you do the same
I'm fascinated by the resonance in the structure!
Awesome Video Alan!

Laughing Gulls are quite funny birds...
That's the second shortest train I've ever seen.
I've seen shorter

At that point, it is called an engine.

I got you there! Fun for all ages
Beautiful rolling lift bridge my favorite!!!
I sure am hearing cars running across the bridge so loudly like that.
Thx Alan I appreciated I love ❤️ your videos
Great video!
Thanks Tommy
Those counterweights are massive. Pretty funny the one car being pulled over.
What car being pulled over? I didn't see it. Time reference?

8:10
s0nnyburnett LOL! The video only goes to 7:15.
At 3:40 did anyone else see a person start to walk across the bridge? I wonder what their reaction was when the bridge started rising LOL
JJRicks Studios That person you see is probably the operator of the bridge.
Kaustin Manary that makes sense
Since the guy walked out of the control building it's a safe bet he's the operator. DOOHH!!!
JJRicks Studios as others have said he would be the operator also known as the tender
At least give the old Gal a paint job
"We did, we got a tanker full of rust color"
here in CT Amtrak just put in a whole new drawbridge in Waterford CT because it was around 100 years old and it broke down alot
Not taking care of it properly will do that.
thats true, but i guess they also wanted to put new rails in cuz the rails were getting outdated and the track itself was lifting up, the line is also used for Freight from Boston to NY
Love your videos
Awesome video as always!
Thank you as always
Plenty of these in New Jersey, nice film work.
The audio makes it sound like a dinosaur is coming after the train
Its cars going over a metal draw bridge I am on
Nice video Allen

wow that's a really rare find good job
Nice.
love the videos man keep up the awesome spotting and ive Subscribed
Did u ever go to horseshoe curve
Its awesome
4:45 the engine still could have made the hop "safely" till this point. I've done the trial runs using my model trains as a kid.

what about the crossing gate laying on the Truck trailer at the crossing ?
Title: "CSX Train Crosses Historic Drawbridge Then Raises After" I watched the video several times, and I ever saw the train rising after it crossed the bridge. ;-)
That's because it happened off camera ;D
Great piece of history. Hopefully someone thought to give it a coat of paint for its centenary.
The old bridge built in 1915

Bobby Paluga OMG I thought I was the only one who thought that!
It’s now 2018 so the bridge now is 103 years old!
what is that noise? sounds like somethings crumbling or breaking of
is Anita highway bridge and out those are tractor trailers going down the road making that humming noise
Doh. ugh well good and thanks!
Ching chung chang It’s another draw Bridge, that’s Cass street. It’s the sound that’s made when cars go over the metal grate portion of draw bridges

Wow good vid
What was the annoying creaking sound in that video
The bridge is not been taking care of
Millenniumforce Typical of CSX.
Raise your hand if the ‘tism brought you here! Question… when there’s both a train and a ship, who has right of way?
HOW DOES A RAILOAD DRAWBRIDGE WORK?
How often does this train run?
I would love to know how this bridge operates.
6:39 There is a counterweight on the far side of the span, near where it pivots, so that relatively little force is needed to raise the bridge. The rocker on which it pivots is also visible, as is the tower where the bridge operator works. 6:24 is a closer look at the rocker.
Verner Hornung HMM OK
The cars on the bridge sounds like the hoax videos of the trumpets in the sky all around the World :D
Isn't this the same bridge that a trespasser fell from because it rose while she was still on it?
No, it's the one in South Florida
Oh ok, I'm only familiar with the Orlando Metro Area.
That semi...was it that serious?
Hey Alan where are u from?
Allen, do you live in Florida by any chance
I think he lives in dover florida correct me if im wrong allan
Yes he does. Plant City, Florida
All that for one stinkin hopper. Hopefully it'll return with more cars.
Allen you need to talk a street runner crew into giving you a cab ride. That would make an interesting video! Do it... that's your 2014 mission!
CSX won't do that
...that's only officially.
What days does the CSX street runner go through Tampa??
Sunday through Thursday 5;30 PM and 10:00 PM
what happens when a boat tries to come threw?

Seriously Conway?
what was that noise
Is that weird ghostly noise the bridge?
thats what i was wandering
Cars going by on the metal bridge I was standing on
Cool thanks. It just sounds really weird. :P
What's the speed restriction on that!?
I think it is 10 MPH
ah thanks!
Wtf? Are monks chanting through this video? Lol
It's the cars on the road bridge behind them.
What is that weird noise?
Why are the street runners so short?
Not many shipments left on that side of the bridge. The most cars I have seen was 13
Is this on Cass Street?
Yes

Skyquake?
what is that sound
+Squid Slaya a car drawbridge next to the train
wow i am actually surprised that you responded
+Squid Slaya Itry to respond to all my 100 comments a day but when it reaches 200 I can't or I will have to hire a secretary.
lol
+Squid Slaya - cars passing over an overpass.
Why did it raise? there was no big boat?
+Dorian Its a rule if there is no train then the bridge must stay in the upright position.
Millenniumforce oh ok I get it
Millenniumforce good answer Alan Uploader
Rail Road Crossing
What is that dying whale sound also posted this comment at 2:00am a railfan joke XD
LOL It's cars going over a drawbridge that I am standing on
Goddamn! 👏👏👏
Erie sound
Train was tiny so should have gone faster
Speed restriction on the old bridge 10 MPH any faster it could end up in the river
Millenniumforce Time for CSX to do some bridge maintenance.
Millenniumforce Yeah
0:14
It's a disgrace! New paint please.
lololol
2:19 Thank me later.
There's nothing there
its a troll
That's where the trains shows up, so you don't have to look at the bridge for 2 minutes.
Ohhhh. now I get it.
Very bad
