    You missed something very critical though...you looked at the surface reconditioner as a metal working tool only. That's where it outperforms others the most is the fact that it can also be great for wood, fiberglass, and plastics....stuff that can easily be destroyed by an angle grinder.

    • @IronHorseGarage
      @IronHorseGarage  Год назад +4

      It would probably work great for that stuff. Thanks for watching!

    • @mikemosley77
      @mikemosley77 Год назад +6

      @@IronHorseGarage Also, one other thing to take into consideration...the angle grinder strip disc only did one job....stripping. The surface conditioner did 2 jobs at once....stripping, PLUS a clean ready-to-go finish. No real metal worker is going to call a job complete with angle grinder streaks and stripes all over a project. So the time you clocked on the angle grinder would literally be 2-4 times longer after finishing passes to make it match the conditioner surface...unless we're just talking about something the size of a welding coupon or something small like that.

    Honestly I think the drum has a better finish, on thin flat surfaces, pretty useless on most other surfaces, the disc is a lot more versatile for any surface, great video thanks, all the best to yous and your loved ones

    I’m a woodworker who uses mine restoring old tools. I like the scratch pattern better with the SCT (for example, on vintage handsaws, where you see the scratch pattern long term).
    As you guys show though, angle grinder is still very versatile and plenty for many (most?) applications.

    So it’s literally called a Surface conditioning tool. Not a paint stripper.
    It can do both, but it’s for a different application imho. I want one for cleaning up metal and giving a smooth satin look. Not gonna be stripping paint.
    Nice video, guys. I love the commentary and music!

    Thanks for posting the comparison. At retail, I'd say it's definitely not a winner, but on sale, I could see adding it to my collection of tools. While I do work with metal, I also work with wood and could see this being helpful in some situations.

    I think you're missing the purpose of the drum style machine, it's to achieve consistent inline abrasions like satin finished stainless steel or aluminum, but can also strip paint as a plus.

    • @IronHorseGarage
      @IronHorseGarage  Год назад +2

      That is not how it's marketed. Eastwoods version is marketed for stripping rust and paint. In our industry you don't want smooth shiny steel to lay paint over so that type of purpose is of no use to us.

      Hi friend, it doesn't surprise me that they market it to the public that way, he'll they market grinding disc's for drills...lol.
      like I said "it can also strip paint as a plus", but its original design is for burnishing metals, my personal machine is a $1200.00 Metabo burnishing machine, but in the past I've also owned stationary machines for burnishing large panels.

Curious about fatigue if you actually did the whole bed. Those grinder strip discs can work really well. Not a good sign the drums sander died so quick. I got it for I think 109 or 119 on coupon a month ago. I guess I better use it a bit to see if it will fail. I think both types will have a place. Thanks for the review!

    I see both having their use! The SCT seems to flat rip off paint rust U name it...yrs worth...and at warp speed on flat surfaces like hoods cab tops roof tops trunks etc....But the grinder is gonna do better on like the side of the vehicle I think or in tons of spots where the big gaulky one ain't gonna ever fit!!
    But the SCT one is pretty awesome when u can bare dn on it put ur weight on it dn on top of it on any surface like I said such as hoods cab tops trunk lids...nice large curves on older antique cars etc!?
    But again the grinder with the rt grit?? Etc...is smaller!!! MUCH more LW!!! Easier to hold move around...get into much better much smaller places...
    And I MEAN U CAN GET A PERFECTLY GOOD BAUER GRINDER LIKE I JUST DID FOR 19.99!!! AND ANY WAY U SLICE IT THAT PRICE IS PRETTY GD HARD TO FN BEAT!!!!😮😊
    19.99+1.40T+8 for 2yr War!! So under 30 w a great 2 yr on it!! U just can't beat that!!!
    And Metabos runs like 39.99+ with a 3YR WAR?? AND LIKE 6 WHEELS!!! GREAT QUALITY FOR AROUND 40!?
    FOR SAME PRICE AS THE METABO U CAN PICK UP A.LITTLE BIGGER BETTER GRINDER WITH THE NICE TAIL AND TIGGER ON IT BY BAUER! CM MAKES ONE AROUND THE SAME PRICE!?
    And the Herc wheels r pretty damned good! Though I do with HF would carry and sell a lot of stripper pads with the Grits on them like the rollers on the SCT!
    SO WHERE DID U GET THOSE PADS AND HOW MUCH NOW?? LOVEEE THOSE BLUE ONES U GOT ON UR METABO!!! I NEED THOSE AND OTHERS LIKE THEM FOR MY NEW 19.99 BAUER GRINDER SO I CAN BEGAN STRIPPIN DN MY OLDDDD 88 CHEVY SILVERADO K2500!!?? MAN O MAN DOES IT LOOK LIKE SHIT!!! TONS OF RUST AND MULTIOL COLOR ETC.... WANTING TO FINALLY DO SOMETHING WITH THE CRAPPY BODY SHIT AND PUT SOME KINDA PAINT ON IT JUST TO MAKE IT A NICE COLOR AND GIVE IT A NICE NEWER NICER LOOK AND SOME UNIFORMITY!!??

      Great point. Just like anything the longer you hold something in place the more heat it generates. The stripping discs won't warp the steel as long as you keep them moving. Thank you very much for watching!

    Thanks & well done. I appreciate that you start the video with almost obligatory return of the defective HF tool. I like tools that just work right out of the box and keep on working. I also hate Communists and what they're doing to our country.
    Those Eastwood drums are spendy compared to the discs. I do like the brushed finish of the drums better for exposed stainless.
    I've looked at the Makita 9741 Wheel Sander, but at $700 +$240+ per drum, it's WAY out of my price-point. It's a specialty tool, for sure.

    How hot is the angle grinder disc getting the metal? In certain conditions it can warp.

    • @IronHorseGarage
      @IronHorseGarage  Год назад

      Not very hot, but yes it can warp the steel no matter which tool you're using. You have to be careful and keep it moving so it's not in one area too long.

      The commenter always has something to say, but usually has zero experience. The Bauer is a piece of garbage and this style of grinder is a gimmick.

    • @BigBear--
      @BigBear-- 2 месяца назад +1

      Take that grinder and come strip prep my wood deck. I want it ready to stain after you're done. 🤣
      Also would love to see the quality paint job you get on that streaky surface after the grinder.
      Would also be fun watching you prep some fiberglass or plastic with the grinder.
      See we can all sh-t on various tools. Doesn't necessarily make it a bad tool. You tried it on one very specific application. Didn't really even prove the point, cause you'd still have to go over and smooth the finish with a bunch of passes if you want to lay a quality paint job down. So all depends on the use case. The drum sander/resurfacing tool is great for certain jobs. Also...who pays full retail at HF? They have sales every day of the week...
