I've been looking at the Eastwood one for several years and never pulled the trigger on one. I happened to be at HF today for some ZipTies and saw it. Had no idea they had one. So I picked it up here in AZ for $149. (Nov '23) It's good to know that the Eastwood one works so I can grab some of their different drums that HF doesn't have out. Thanks for the vid!
The truck ya see in my profile was done with so many tools from harbor freight. I had to drive an hour to the closest store. As soon as I finished it… they opened a store just across the street. Lol.
I almost bought the Eastwood last year but went with Restorer instead. Mine only has a 3.5 amp motor but it works great. I believe the drums are actually the same size and yes, they are interchangeable between MOST tools of this type. I bought mine to remove the rust and scale from the chassis of a 1994 Ford Ranger that has been through 26 Northwest Ohio winters. I used the stainless wire drum first, then the stripping drum that's shown in the video. A few hours later, I was left with shiny bare steel ready for chassis paint. A friend recently borrowed it and used a nylon "wire" brush to give some new lumber an aged look for a bar that he's building in his basement. After some dark stain and semi gloss clear poly, it looks awesome!
I don't have a use for that tool but I love that Heart collapsible table. I bought it last year on close out after you featured it on deals of the week.
Great tool to have, a huge time saver for complete surface stripping, especially in comparison to sand blasting.
I've had an Eastwood for 3 years, used it a lot. Still works well. I'll stick with the Eastwood.

I'm loving mine. It did in an hour what it would have taken many many hours with brushes and sanders etc. Empire Abrasives also has a good selection of different drums and brushes as well.

I love mine. Bought it to help make lighter work of restoring the grilltop on a 36" blackstone griddle and I was able to get it to a smooth, level finish with about an hour of work broken up with plenty of liquid refreshment. Wire wheel and flap disk for small areas, all in all the grill is fantastic now. I'll be finding other uses for it from the comments, but it performed great for what I needed. Aftermarket polishing drums also might be on my list soon.
I have rhe porter cable version. Picked d it up ar lowes on close out for half price before porter cable crashed and brunt. Good tool. Waiting for hf to come out with air powered version. Shine on bear.
I was about to try to get one today, but when realized it has no dust collection option decided to wait+do further research on the other similar tools available. Not sure why they wouldn't have done dust collection; for something that you know you're most likely going to be kicking up some messy finishes with. The Bauer random oscillating sander, for example, has a port you can connect a shop vac to and plastic collection cup for if you're shop vac-less.. I feel like they could've added a similar design here. I'm mostly looking at these types of tools for shou sugi ban clean up, quickly cleaning/stripping repurposed wood, and removing old furniture finishes. Things that can kick up lots of mess everywhere, lots of little particles, +I feel is important enough that while I'd hoped it would be as simple as picking up one of these a few blocks away, no dust collection option is gonna be a deal breaker for me :(
Off topic but for your benefit. My Drill Master side grinder was making some awful noises and was not going full speed. A little grease in the gears and bushing in the gear case solved it for now. Thought it was a goner. Not too much play in bushings.
I had been looking at the Eastwood SCT for about a year, and then Harbor introduced their version of it. I did visual comparisons "Cleveland OH has an Eastwood Brick and Mortar store" I opted for the Bauer based on the $$Math$$ Eastwood SCT non sale price 229.99 Tool + 120grit drum + 53.99 40Grit Drum + 19.99 240 grit Drum total $302.99, Harbor Freight: Tool and same 3 drums $129.00. I've used it to strip down 2 door skins, and some bar stock that was covered in rust scale. The 40 grit drum shows virtually no wear yet. I intend to use it for the floor boards in a car that need patches welded in, the Frame on my truck and the frame of my car trailer in prep for paint, and for those of you that say Blasting would be faster, yes it would, but have you priced blasting media lately, not to mention I don't need a coal dust beach in my backyard...

I've had the eastwood since it came out 3 years ago...i can't imagine this hf model holding up for the long haul.at least the drums are cheaper.....but not available now...
These are great for auto body part stripping. Did my whole hood in an hour using the Amazon cheapo. I did modify it by adding set screw to guard, adding spacer washers and longer bolt. Wear an apron unless you like rusty crotch

Cool. Of course I want one, but I don't do enough things like this to require more than an angle grinder and those abrasive stripping wheels with the nylon fiber stuff covered with silicon carbide. But maybe someday...
I use my Eastwood to the max getting old now. Do a lot of body and wrought iron work.. Might try one
I saw very similar tool as this by Metabo a few years ago in a shop that made custom paint booths. I recall they used Sait and Metabo for the abrasive and they said they were paying 30 to 85 bucks for each one even in carton quantity. I will be giving this a try when I can get it at local Harbor freight. My guess the Metabo version is well north of $600
I actually went to get one of these this morning after dropping the kids off at school but the price has already went up to $150. At that price it's so close to the Eastwood I would prefer to buy the Eastwood and their drums even if not as much is included. Proven track record.
I could see someone making a winch drum for light duty. Or making a v belt/old fashioned leather belt drive pulley for projects. Chainsaw attachment or wood carving adaptations (maybe not enough power).The six speeds make it versatile enough for unique setups.
The Eastwood looks like you can access the brushes more easily with those external screw covers.
Ah the sound of noisy bearings. Some day we'll look back fondly on those old HBF tools... :-) Seriously though, I'm excited!
I restored several old, large woodworking machines, I found using the "non-toxic" chemical stripper ($25-$30/ gallon at HD) worked best and fastest over sanding/ mechanical stripping. The trick is after scraping off the bulk of the paint use a steel wool soap pad (brillo/ SOS) and water for the rest. If there is any paint left a random orbital sander should easily handle it. Disclosure: This method really worked well on really old machine paint, I did not try it on automotive paint.
Super late in getting it, but I just picked one up today on HF’s Black Friday Spring Sale for $108. Thought it’d come in handy for a solar trailer build we’re doing for a neighbor. Trailer is 2nd hand and needs all of the old paint and surface rust removed. Nothing but steel square tubing, angle iron and I-beams. Takes forever with the grinder and wire wheel/wire cup. This might help cut down on the time for sure!
I was at the Eastwood store in Alsip Illinois ( Chicago) this morning and can tell you that the 4 1/2" drum from Eastwood will fit the Bauer model, however, it only leaves a 1/8 to 1/16 space between the fence and the Eastwood drums.
Just buy the Vevor for $100 and you can use any standard size drum on the market. There are hundreds of 3rd party drums out there that are very versatile that will not fit the Bauer.

Interesting, I wanted the Eastwood version but didn't need a tool that expensive. I am only going to use it for a couple projects. I might have to run over to HF.
Vevor. $100. Uses hundreds of standard size drums (like the Eastwood), and not just the 3 HF drums.
Pretty nice tool. I could do some serious damage with that thing lol would be cool to see a follow up video on some more material.

I’m not excited about those grinding noises it was making on startup and when it took on the load. Think I’ll stick with my Roloc pads and bristle disk for now. What do the consumables cost on that booger?
Would this work well for removing mill scale from steel? I’m new to welding and already tired of cleaning scrap with grinding wheels and flap disks.

I've been looking for this at my local HF for some time now, and found one this morning. I purchased the only one they had and added the extra 2 year warranty was only $1 a month, $24.00 that's a no brainer. Now I have a 27 month warranty. I'm going to Eastwood this weekend and will report back if the drums are interchangeable. Keep up the great videos.

Is it powerful enough to use as a medium duty shaper for wood when using something like a 40 or 80 grit drum?

@@ameswt I didn’t find it awkwardly large. I think it would work well on axe heads (at least the larger faces). Probably not the best choice for chisels and other small tools.
Looking at it now. About to start restoring a 1952 Ford 8N tractor.
Looks like the gearbox having the corners on the front will limit how much life you get out of the drum itself. maybe if it had a more round form factor who knows.

I like this tool I build live edge furniture and considered the restorer but this seems better and lower cost would like to see you test it on a piece of live edge with the bark off and clean the edge up.
You don't want the Bauer or Restored (brand) because you will be stuck having to buy their drums. And for live edge work, you cannot manipulate Restorer into concave edges--it's designed mostly for flat-ish work. For $100 you can get a Vevor with 4 drums, and you have access to hundreds of standard size, 3rd party drums. The flexible, nylon brushes in various grits are probably what you want.

Eastwood's SCT needs an eraser drum option for badge adhesive.

I have the Porter cable restorer , I also have the Craftsman version . I have to say the Porter cable has more power than the Craftsman version. I purchased the Craftsman at Lowes on clearance for 50 dollars I couldn't pass up the deal ....

The Eastwood was my choice by force because they did offer what I wanted, but last year when Harbor showed what was coming, I said goodbye Eastwood, Hello Bauer.
1. Less expensive and if you get the extend warranty is still cheaper than Eastwood and almost match the 3 years that Eastwood offers.
2. Anything wrong with the tool just walk in and get your replacement at the spot.
3. This tool is better to remove paint from a car. Paint strippers are expensive and need a lot if you're going to do the whole car.
Can you put Bauer drums on the Eastwood srt?

Worked ok for me. Dropped the thing on to the concrete out of the truck and its fine. Did a bunch of steel and fiberglass and it worked well. Its not my $850 Metabo but close enough for 129.

I usually spend at least an hour with an angle grinder and what we call a cookie trying to remove a plastic grocery store bag from an exhaust. I wonder if this would make it easier or would it just require me to remove the exhaust in order to clean it
I got this today at my local Harbor Freight store. I had a 25% off coupon so it was $89 plus tax. I was suprised how big it is. It is 2 times the size I imagined it would be and that 40 grit drum is an absolute monster!

Will it remove paint from concrete without self destructing?
It's important that if you try this, you clamp your work to your table saw so that when you need to put a slot in your metal you can just raise the blade into the stock. Easy peasey.

I just picked up the Eastwood Contour SCT a few days ago and I'm loving it! More expensive than the Bauer and don't get me wrong I love Bauer products but the Contour has a 3 year warranty

Yes. Many people use them to strip paint, stain and varnish.

The Restorer, the Craftsman and the Summit all have a vacuum adapter. That could be a big deal if you want to use this tool for shou sugi ban wood burning. The fine charcoal can make a real mess and it's not great to breathe.
That is precisely why I held off buying one today; the realization there is zero current option for dust collection.. seems kind of a big deal for a tool like this!

Yes it's real and it's fantastic works really well ...the need to start carrying the sanding drums as well!
Bauer only accepts their very limited drums. Get an Eastwood ($200) or Vevor ($100) and you can get rubber drum with sanding sleeves, wire brushes, buffer, or hundreds of other 3rd party drums. Sucks that HF wants to limit you to their drums.
It seems decent but I like my Walter better because it has more power , it has a 5/8 11 threaded arbor, the case is awesome, and it has the inflatable drum sander.. the only down side is the the Walter is double the price

I'll tell you where this fits into the Hercules line up, is in 2-3 yrs, they'll remold it in blue, slap 50 extra bucks on it and some hercules stickers. And then say whaaat? It's a new tool? (Just going off their previous record...)
Oorrr they discontinue this one, find whoever makes the smaller cheaper ones you showed, and then, that's when the rerelease this in blue. They may not do hercules though. They don't have a Hercules buffer either. So their nicest buffer is a Bauer.... Maybe some top of the line tools aren't gonna be Bauer. 🤷♂️

Maybe it's just me, but the bauer motors on this and my angle grinder sound like they are in bad shape out of the box. bit rattly. I do like the feel of the bauer grinder though better than my dewalt.

Herc will probably drop a 15 amp version. I'll stick with Bauer. Bauer hasn't let me down yet.
Do you think this would be good for stripping paint for a wood deck?
I bought a Vevor (very similar) to remove LOOSE paint after stripping most of what would come off with a pressure washer. The Vevor has access to more 3rd party drums that are too big around for the Bauer. There are a TON of drum options for removing loose paint: flap drum, nylon bristles with embedded grit, special paint removal drums, wire brush drum, ect. You can even get a rubber drum that accepts sanding sleeves. Although it did a great job removing loose paint, smoothing rough areas, and sanding patched cracks, you are not going to be grinding thick paint down to the wood. Even my belt sander belts would clog up too quickly for doing much of that. For loose paint or feathering well-adhered paint edges it works great.
Since it's a drum and round. If you're trying to fit a four and a half inch diameter. You would need an extra quarter of an inch clearance on the tool.
Not sure if it's a stupid engineering move, or to force you to buy their (very limited) HF drums. Insted it forced me to buy a Vevor on Amazon with 4 drums for $100 that accepts any 3rd party drum.
It totally sucks that the Bauer forces you to stick with the smaller diameter, very limited HF drums. It's why I just bought the Vevor with 4 drums on Amazon for $99. If you don't mind the offset spindle, it's cheaper and uses any of the dozens of 3rd party drums. The offset can actually be better if you are sanding between wrought iron rails, etc.

It makes me wonder if they took grinder components and made them into this. I wonder how long it holds up until it gets too hot like the 4.5" angle grinders. This might be worth the cost in order to make some of the previously mentioned hashtag style of wood projects!

YES!
From the demo, I wasn't too impressed.
The disk grinders seem to remove rust and scale faster/better.
Looks like the tool I need to refinish my 29 Ford. Better price point than Eastwood, just wish it had a better warranty.
I'm not sure a belt sander with coarse grit and 8" of surface area on the material wouldn't be 16X faster than the drum with 1/2" (at best) contact with the material.
I don't see me ever needing this. I'd just use my angle grinder with a wire wheel or my belt sander.
This is probably less likely to maul you or skewer you than an angle grinder with a wire wheel. All the exposed spinning bits are pointed the same way, unlike a grinder, so hopefully it's less likely to kick in random directions. And the drums are safer than wire wheel. A lot slower too (rpms)
Yeah but do they make belts for 8" belt sanders that are compatible with metal? As far as I know the selection for belt sanders is pretty much limited to aluminum oxide.

I have this tool and tried ordering some of the less expensive 120mm wheels sold on amazon. got a pack of 7 and half of them barely fit, the other half were too big. obviously the measuring tolerances of the wheel manufacturer wander to say the least, but I'd stick with 110mm or 100mm wheels . Or you might want to look at a similarly priced tool that can handle slightly bigger wheels, since there seem to be a lot of 120mm wheels on the market. I would love some links to inexpensive polishing wheel kits that fit this machine if anyone comes across them
I bought the Vevor with 4 drums on Amazon for $100 for that reason. I can put any 3rd party drum on it. Eastwood is also universal fit, but costs twice as much.
Would this be ideal to restore an old cast iron wood stove? It's a cylindrical type
"Ideal" is buying flap discs for the angle grinder you probably already have.

I do some builds where I lightly burn wood and scratch out the softwood before stain and finish . Has anyone used this for that? I been using a drill and wire wheel but this looks like possible alternative.
I use a Porter Cable Restorer for that. It has dust collection that actually works. Although the wire wheels tend to shed and don’t last a long time. I haven’t tried the nylon wheels yet.
