MAHALIA JACKSON Live late 1960's We shall overcome

- We shall overcome--very moving she gets totally saturated with the song, even at the end as she walks from the mic the power of her voice is still overwhelming. This song was a staple of the civil rights movement, Mahalia worked closely with Dr. Martin Luther King. She also sang Precious Lord at his funeral in 1968
To walk away from a microphone like that, and still be heard so powerfully is beyond belief. How blessed those people in the audience were to be present at this performance.
Yes oh yes! I wasn't even born yet ( born in 1982) and if I was born and fully grown before she passed, I WOULD HAVE WENT TO SEE HER IN PERSON!!!! IN FACT I WOULD OF TRIED TO WENT TO EVERY LAST ONE OF Miss Mahalia Jackson performances!! I LOVE HER SO MUCH! RIP BEAUTIFUL SOUL.
You are absolutely totally right. I was young when she was around. Did not know then but I sure do know now. When I am down, I play this. Brilliant she was. Elvis too with his gospel songs.
love you. miss jackson mary betts pa.
love you. miss jackson mary betts pa.
Martyn W I know right!! Powerful voice used by God in such a crucial time!!
GREATEST WALK OFF EVER FROM A MIC AND STILL HER VOICE EHCO LIKE THAT. SHE'S THE G.O.A.T!!!!
"Such an anointed voice of all times indeed Mahalia Jackson " Google : Patti Labelle - Forever Young (Live)
I am so thrilled that my grandmother introduces me to Ms. Jackson and her music when I was very young and today, I'm going on 71 years of age and when I listen to her my soul is at peace. In 1999 my only son was killed by gun violence in Washington DC, and for an entire year I listen to her singing It Is Well with My Soul and understood a lot more about death she did not worry about dying, and today I know it's well with my soul.
Trying time and life happening to all of us it going to be alright one day. Sing Mahalia, I know you keep the souls in heaven entertain and the angels rejoiced to have you around the throne. When I hear the younger folks say Aretha Frankling Queen of Gospel, please don't think I'm disrespecting her NO! Mahalia Jackson was Queen of Gospel because she was guided by the God and sang to his glory.
I am so sorry for your loss. 😥
My pastor at the time and Mahalia Jackson were friends and from the same hometown. while traveling to another church, we met her at a rest stop on the turnpike. She sat at our table and had a meal with us. I was mesmerized...beautiful personality, pleasant, smiling and making jokes. I was pregnant with my twins at the time and she rubbed my stomach for good luck, said a prayer and sang to my babies! I will never forget that wonderful experience. She is truly the absolute best gospel singer ever!!
the blood of Jesus ,uau, what a blessed for you, It sure is something to never forget!
I would have never washed my belly again🙏🏾😄
Microphones didn’t do her voice justice to me. Once her voice caught the acoustics of a room or stage you really caught the beauty of her voice. That chesty, throaty, powerful contralto was truly a gift to humanity from The ALMIGHTY GOD!
Yes indeed Mahalia Jackson is the greatest not only gospel singing But the greatest singer of all times. I thank God that she chose to sing gospel and give him the praise. There has been many and will do many gospel singers since you went on to Glory. Yet Mahalia Jackson is it a class completely all by herself. Thank you Lord for blessing the world with Mahalia Jackson
Sister Mahalia had a calling from the Lord in song. Even as a child when I would listen to her, it seemed as though the Lord had brought heaven down to Earth.
I was paralyzed in bed last year and I heard Jesus say out loud to me - If you believe in me get up and walk💜🕊💜 I got up and not only walked but went for a walk outside. Praise God!!!!! GOD IS ALWAYS WORKING!!!! ✌💜🕊🙏
To me she STILL is the Queen of Gospel..... NOBODY sings Gospel like Mahalia.
Dear lady if there's a way you can hear me...you touched my heart ever since I was a little girl...and I thank you for your sharing your wonderful gift ; Your angelic voice. May this pass on for & to generations to come.
Angel Quest To Mahalia As Well She’s had that same effect on me Also and lately it’s more Transparent, I Pray that your Slumber Be Ever So Peaceful/ I Thank God For sharing you with Us🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾❤️
Queen Mahalia was beautiful and what she attempted to affect was important.
Please take strides and do the best with those.
Mahalia sing that song, today gospels singers can't come close to the feelings that Mahalia put in a song.
2:45...that's real singing when you can walk away and still project your voice like you havent stepped away from the mic
Not necessarily
she had a real powerful voice
r. i. p Mahalia Jackson.
If you're reading this with tears in your eyes, know that GOD is speaking directly to your wounded soul through this message. You didn't just happen to stumble across this message.GOD led you to it.He wants you to know that He is making a way for you right now!He is healing that sickness. He is going to give you an opportunity that you've never had.He is going to heal your strained relationships.Stay in faith, bcos your breakthroughs is coming.🕊🕊🕊
Unlike some gospel singers today, Mahalia actually believed in what she said! Mahalia didn't sing gospel for fame she sang for God. pray that God blesses you and keeps you.
She is the greatest gospel singer
Everything going to be alright someday .....
I guess not!!
The second coming
The thing I respect about this woman is that she allows the Spirit to guide her and she aint worried about what other people think. You have to feel "something" when you watch this.
There will never be another Mahalia Jackson.
SHE WAS A GIFT FROM GOD !!!!!!!!!
The "Queen", "Voice", this is an Angel singing!!!!!!!!!! Listening in supernatural realm

Mahalia Jackson truly the first greatest gospel singer of all time
Mahalia you existed way before my time and I feel like I have known you all my life. I miss you dearly and wished I could have been able to just hear you live. You are truly missed by all. For you are the Original and Only Queen of Gospel!
Mahalia makes me long for heaven, yet at the same time realize how wicked and sinful my own heart is, longing for a savior. Thank God for His grace and mercy, ad willingness to look upon such a sinful soul with kindness and mercy.
Thaila why black folk always gotta bash another black folk. She says she cares for EVERYONE Jesus died with 2 thieves hanging beside him and they went with him. You forgot? The world will always be corrupt. Pray
James , Let is all be bone-deep grateful for God’s infinite mercy to all us undeserving sinners.
the lord was with this lady all the days of her life.
It is good you admitted your sins and wicked ways and I going to admit my wicked ways too. Pray for me my name is Tameria Diane Jones.
It wasn't about racism. The song was a gospel song about "overcoming", or going to heaven. It became a civil rights anthem much later. Mahalia was talking about salvation. By truly being a Christian (Christ-like) and not simply taking God's blessings. But rather extending these blessings to others around us. And if we fail, we can apologize to God, and try again the next day. We're human. God doesn't expect perfection. But He does want us to strive to become better Christians. This was during the Vietnam era when the world was full of turbulence. And yes, the civil rights movement was warming up. But Mahalia is speaking about our actions today, so that we may all overcome, to heaven together.
I was born in 1977 so I only heard about how heartfelt this song was amongst my people during the Civil Rights era. This is the first time I actually heard this song and FELT what they must have felt singing it. She really believed this for her people, you can tell.
@Thalia T. AWESOME! Thank you for sharing!
that's remarkable that you come from a civil rights background and only heard this for the first time in 2015.
Not to offend you but I'm from Europe from a communist /catholic background and I've known this song all my life.
know you're history uncle (it's black)
@@1969TheGreat I'm not exactly offended but I didn't say that I had never heard the song. I've been a musician almost all my life. I have played this song for many a singer. What I said was that I was born AFTER the Civil Rights Movement and never got to hear it sung LIVE during the Civil Rights Era so when people talk about the song and the power of the song, they're talking about something they experienced in real time. I can't go back to the 60s and re-live the song with them. What I said was that the power of THIS rendition gives me a clear picture of what the song must have done for people in the 60s. History is one of my best subjects. Read for comprehension before checking people.
this womon can sing she is my favorite singer and i am 16 year
Every gospel singer today owes a lot to this women. Before her, there was no such thing as a professional gospel singer. What a woman.
She was the greatest gospel singer of all time since her death over 40 years ago no one has come along to replace her. I still miss her. May heaven always be her dwelling ground.
Humanity won't witness an artist of your caliber for another millennium.. and even then if human kind is lucky enough
Very touching! My mom used to listen to Mahalia Jackson when I was young.
Lloyd D Tinsley My mama did too. Mahalia Jackson is my mother’s favorite artist.
What a exceptional lady of christ, 🙏♥️ truly anointed 😇🙌🙏♥️
I CAN'T STOP CRYING, I JUST CAN'T 😭SHE JUST BRING THE TEARS THAT WANT STOP. QUEEN OF GOSPEL.
Just know in my time of sorrow burying both my children that I can play this & her powerful voice gives me some guidance & comfort..thank you Mahalia
So very sorry for your loss. No one should have to go through that. This song is magical. Just know they are with you always.
Yes I lost a son last year and this brings me comfort even through the tears!!!
Everything will be alright! Sorry to hear about your loss
I am deeply sorry you had to bury your children the grief sorrow and sadness is incomprehensible. I don't believe that god wanted parents to bury their children but rather the children bury the parents I never had a child of my own to me it would just be unbearable.
Mahalia was anointed by God
Reminds of my mama, who died 51 yrs ago! She sang Miss Jackson to me all the time!😢
She was absolutely sublime. What a great artist. Astounding voice, and such warmth, radiant and deep - one of a kind.
I just see how much she loved the Lord when I hear her music and words.
I heard her sing this in person! Amazing….Grace….personified!
When they say the world's greatest gospel singer it was given to the right person, and at forty five I haven't heard anyone in this world today with this amazing voice like hers. This is what I call a true singer, and I know God gave her this amazing voice to touch so many lives.
Tears... This reminds me of my childhood sitting in church at the age of 5 with my Grandmother.. Oh how I wish she was here to guide me in all this racial turmoil. How did she ever live through it? And I know it was worst for than it is for me. I didn't experience discrimination while she was alive so those was the questions I didn't know to ask. The pain my grandparents must've endured.. Nana , Pop Pop I miss and love you.
you are so right Syd and this music and the belief that things would be alright and be better helped them endure it all!!
When she backs away from the mic, her voice still concusses the arena. That's how powerful and soulful and holy her voice was and is. I tear up every time I see this, and I've seen it over 20x.
Microphones didn’t do her voice justice to me. Once her voice caught the acoustics of a room or stage you really caught the beauty of her voice. That chesty, throaty, powerful contralto was truly a gift to humanity from The ALMIGHTY GOD!
PRAISE GOD FROM WHOM ALL BLESSINGS FLOW.....
The Queen, the Voice literally an Angel singing!!! We have tapped into the Supernatural realm!!!
I am so thankful to have listened to this moving and powerful voice in our home when I was a young boy.Mahalia was "on loan " from Almighty God to testify in his name and inspire people like me to "believe"!
If we could all invite Christ to be our Lord and Savior, invite Him to dwell within our very spirits, and then yield to Him, ... O What a Wonderful World this World Would Be! RIP Sister
It amazed me that kids took a field trip to go see her... Nowadays that probably would NEVER happen. That shows how much respect they had for her.
Bravo! It's making me cry 😪😔
I am sitting hear in tears so power her words and belief!
This lady is one of the worlds GREASTEST FEMALE VOCALIST its a pleasure to hear her voice .......just listen
She was so amazing. I'll always love Mahailia Jackson and she will always be my favorite gospel singer
She is beyond...and to exit the stage like she did and still be heard...sheesh! GOD bless!
That leaving the mic was POWERFUL...it was almost prophetic when u keep lookin at it she waving to the crowd and saying children everything gonna b alright and when she sang the last part "one day" it was like an echoing to it like she was gonna b leavin to go and be with the Lord but it was gonna b alright powerful
I got the same feeling!!!! So prophetic in the way this song ended!
Rip mahila Jackson we love you so much
This is literaly a 'chills down the spine moment' - fantastic
The Queen of Gospel..................Unmatched.
I love her performances so much. Such an inspiration!
Let me translate for the sweet babies we raised:
Love, love, and more love.
That's ALL: LOVE.
this woman gives me chills up and down my spine. it gives me the lift, makes me smile and want to do better.
like a mighty wind, indeed. she's blessed.
A careful research of her biographies will reveal that this was not her last concert, although much misinformation is out there. This was 1969. She lived 3 more years plus a few months. Her final concert was in Germany in 1971.
I cried as if I lost my grandmother ❤
STILL GIVE ME CHILLS!!!
DANGGGGGGG! OH MY GOD!!!! LEGENDARY!!!
🙏🏾👑🙏🏾

#GRATEful1967🍀🙏🏾
#BLESSed1967💎💎💎🙏🏾
I thank God for you, Sister Haley! You are one of the reasons why I keep believing and one of the reasons I know I will overcome when I make it to heaven. Thanks for the post.
If there's one song that can make me 'tear up' instantly it's Mahalia Jackson singing We Shall Overcome
When she sings heavens open and angels rejoice
When the late "Mother of Gospel" sings; she truly makes you feel something - even if you don't have the spirit within you. My God, created someone who was different and there is no other like this woman. What a beautiful song. It touches my heart deeply. Peace!
Only one MahaliaJackson only one
Thank you for downloading this. Words can't really express how powerfully gut wrenching this singing is.
@mallcolmx well.a white man here...one who was brought up listening to black music in the 1950s...played on my father's wind up gramophone...Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Bill Broonzy, many others.
I love Indian Music too, and Arab Music, ... I too have a heart, I too have been through hardships........ poverty....
Wow! What a performance!! There'll never be another Mahalia!! Not in this lifetime or the one to come!!
At the end it seemed as if she was saying a final Goodbye! Very heartfelt 💞
This is a treasure, thank you for posting this elfeco. It really shows the spirit of the Civil Rights Movement. That Mahalia could go to a foreign land and sing this song baring her soul, and have it translate through language and culture is a testament to the commonalities we share as humans -- very powerful. I hope we can stop finger pointing, and debating about who's at fault and just concentrate on how we can improve the world and make it better, so that we can overcome one day.
This is the day the Lord has made let us rejoice and be glad in it! I love you lord, I thank you Lord for all that I have, all that I am and all that is to come. I was a stray but now Im found. Amazing grace, you name oh Lord is so sweet to my ears!amen
wooooooo felt this in my veins!!!!! awesome
Hearing Mahalia sing songs like this just about brings tears to my eyes just about every time
To: Mahailia Jackson, "HEAVEN" has pro-claimed it's "ANGEL" within you; and the world has lost, but gained [A] "BLESSING" from GOD!!!" "...R.I.P. Mahailia Jackson, you've earned your "CROWN" and "ETERANAL LIFE" with GOD"
I like to listen to this song when I'm feeling down because it really encourages me and I feel that everything is going to be OK. Thank God for Mahalia Jackson
We are all sisters and brothers. This sister was and is the largest of the largest. Amen.
This has to be the most powerful interpretation of this song...it's just incredible how moving it is.
Today she is still vocally unmatched. You can tell this concert took a toll on her health by the end of the song by how she walked away, waving to the audience "Chulrun Everythang's Gonna Be Alright (walk's away like the true Queen she was) Some-Day" Now tell me what artist can pull that off
Q.C. Chieftain Uhhhh 🙄 None👊🏾🙏🏾🙌🏿
AnnetteWhat a Blessings Mcintee Exactly!!
I love this woman and the song of light she shines on us all.. she's been a strength for this weak man who types to you now.. God bless her and you... love and peace..wa11ace.
60 years later we still haven't overcome....!
The world is more vulnerable than ever!
we shall overcome.
OMG IS THIS SERIOUS??
IS THIS SERIOUS MAN??!!! she's 5 feet apart from the mic and still so powerful
Mahalia's voice was so plain and clean and beautiful that she didn't need any extra notes or flowery runs for you to feel her. Just pure power and beauty, and she completely fills the room even as she moves away from the microphone. Just a one of a kind performer. Only Aretha at her best compares to me, although Aretha was totally different in her gospel style.
THANK YOU FATHER FOR YOUR DAUGHTER, LOVE ❣️ ALWAYS YOUR DAUGHTER, LINDA SUTTON
Thank God for all the people who faught to be treated equally! No one should have to fight for that, this earth, land, oceans, etc was made for us all no matter the color or region! I thank God that African Americans knew that, and some didn't!
Will meet her in HEAVEN ONE DAY Such amazing lady That LOVES Our Lord Jesus Christ
i love her so much she could sin R & B i will still love her. she is the QUEEN and can't no one touch i love her.
I had to watch this again today, with the services for George Floyd fresh in my mind, I remember listening to Mahalia singing in the 60's, with that magnificent voice helping us get through similar dark days. God bless you, Mahalia, for your inspiration. I was a little boy when I first heard you, I'm an old man now but your voice still makes strong. God Bless.
Wunderschön danke
this lady is THE BEST. God please send another mahalia
she was the last angel on this earth !!! hope she lives in piece now
Mahalia was all heart...this version of "We shall overcome " is the best I have ever heard....the emotion speaks to all mankind
59 years old... Today it has all its Sens💕💞🙏💖💖💖. the audience was as hypnotized by that voice these words.
At 3:13 proves to all people that Mahalia Jackson was and truly still is the Queen of Gospel of all time, because of her booming and anointed voice of God. She truly was about her father's business.
Mahalia's message is universal...so sad the world forget so many times the rights for equality...
No One but No One could sing the Gospel like Mahalia. If you don't know the one she sang about, get to know him, Today.
There aren't enough stars to give this video! Amazing.
When, I listen to this late great singer "Mother of Gospel" sing this song. It makes me think of what this country is in today. Yes, we shall over come! And I say this to say, no matter what obstalce we face, "GOD" has the last say so. I love to listen to "The Late Motherof Gospel" sing. What a true legend she was.
I am crying. a river right now. My eyes are swollen. I am. so blessed
Everything’s Gonna Be Alright...... Someday 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
When I hear her sing it gets down ...way down in my soul. It's like being nearer to my ancestors. The ones that put their life on the line for my freedom. Then I go back into the world and I see that freedom ever so slowly being taken away. By my people and the ones that diligently and deliberately work to oppress us as a people. I live and Chicago and I have to wonder if Jesus, Martin, Mahalia, Malcolm, and the other great prophets lived what would they say to us now.
i like how she changed the lyrics to say "IF IN OUR HEARTS, WE WILL OBEY, THEN WE WILL OVERCOME ONE DAY" love it
