Over and over again! Am I the only one who turns away from imitators? They may imitate her voice but they can't touch her genuine passion. The difference in genuine black gospel music is that it is sang from the heart and soul. Performance is not a concern. It's all about the message. You can sit in the poorest of black churches, some still wooden and perched on concrete blocks and listen to the old folks who never went to school pat their feet to the beat and rock the church! Today's Kirk Franklins and Hawkins and nobody else can touch'em. As the old saying goes, they've been immitated but never duplicated. Let the old school church say Amen.

I suffered from infertility tried for so many years to get pregnant. I always prayed to god to please bless me with a child. I was watching a mother play with her son on tik tok one day I cried and screamed to God "God please give me a child!!!!!" that same day something in me told me to take a pregnancy test... it came back positive! I couldnt believe it I was in tears and in shock!I took more pregnancy tests and they all came back positive! A week after I found out I was pregnant I found a cross necklace a few steps away from where I worked at and I then knew it was really God all along and never left my side. I now have a 11 month healthy beautiful baby boy. He's turning 1 in a few days! God is good!

Once when I was singing at my church my pastor likened me to Mahalia Jackson. I was shocked because I didn't think I sounded like her, but I always liked her style of singing. When she sings I feel the Holy splrt on me

I recently had a major heart attack October 5, 2017 and I laid in my apartment for 2 days because I was afraid to call 911. When I look back, I wonder how I got over. God must have sent an Angel to watch over. I want to thank God this morning for sending his Angels to watch over . I am so blessed to be in the land of the living. We just lost Della Reese and I love hearing her sing the song, 'I've Been Touched By An Angel'. Both Mahalia Jackson and Della Reese are singing in God's heavenly choir.

This is the gospel we grew up with. My mother would walk around the house singing how we got over. It was her faith as a single parent that got us over.
Clara Ward wrote this as an upbeat song but Mahalia claimed this song when she slowed it down....one of the best remakes ever made.
I love Clara's version, but Mahalia is the queen of gospel.
Actually Rev William Herbert Brewster Sr wrote this song and Clara Slapped her name on it.

This was one of the first gospel videos I ever saw on youtube. 16 years later and it's as powerful as the first time I saw it. I love how it slowly rises in intensity as Mahalia and that woman in the audience have a little friendly tug-of-war back and forth. Mahalia asserts herself, drowns out and eventually overwhelms the lady. Not even tape warble can hold back the power of this perfect performance.

I just came across this lady by chance on RUclips. I had never heard of her. I don't have the words to describe how her singing is effecting me. I'm somewhat familiar with the great jazz, blues, and soul singers - gospel, not so much. It's kind of silly of me posting this comment, because obviously you've heard her sing - you understand! I am moved to tears. Oh, and by the way, I'm an old white man. Her singing touches the divine. To me, it goes beyond all the worldly strife and division that is tearing us apart. If more people could be moved by her singing the way it has moved me - we could be healed.

Same here. I saw a friend post her friend singing "Take my Hand Lord" on her whatsapp status and I went searching to find that song on RUclips and came across Lady Mahalia singing that song. Then, I found a clip of her singing this song (How I got over) at Sir MLK's rally. I looked up her name and it means "teanderness" and "affection". I believe this will be the middle name of our daughter when she is born hopefully this year 2021. Jahnaya Mahalia (God's grace is tenderness and affection).

I was in broadcasting for 30 plus years. My first "gig" was for a radio station in Rawlins, Wyoming. At that time, it was the only radio station in a 100 mile radius. On Sunday mornings I was the "jock" on air - responsible for making sure that we played nothing but spirtual music for around 90 minutes. No talk, just spiritual music - and of course, commercials for 90 rather slow - forgive me Father - rather boring minutes. With knowledge mostly of the Beatles, Stones and the "British invasion" only, it was a challenge to find something that wouldn't put folks back to sleep. But then I discovered a couple of Mahalia Jackson vinyls. From that point on the Sunday morning broadcasts, that I spun records for. always had something from the other worldly Ms M. Sunday morning radio in Rawlins, Wyoming was never boring again.
There were lots of great Gospel groups back then- Sis Rosetta Tharpe, Dixie Hummingbirds, the Sour Stirrers, and Golden Gate Quartet to name a few.

joe ferguson my goodness the great Mildred Falls is tearing that piano up , when it gets good like this it must be God holding them both from just going holy ghost crazy and just running and just leaving the piano, Ms.Falls piano playing is complimenting the heck out of Ms. Jackson's vocals I remember seeing this as a little child and it moved then & it still moves now after all this time. I remember as a little kid we would hear Ms. Jackson singing early on Sunday morning without the music with her window up just tear up the place singing her songs , singing so forcefully it would bring me to tears I would just stand there In total awe of what I was hearing ,coming from a human being I was so taken by this lady singing , and she would see me & wave at me then I would go on to the corner candy store.

When I passed out at work and with a fracture my skull and bleeding on the brain and a stroke this song how i got over came to mind for some reasons. It goes to show I don't care if one is a sinner or not God always got his children back through anything. Again, it cause me to think how am I going to make it through my health issue. To me listening to Miss Mahalia Jackson song How I Got I Over on you tube over and over again to me the song just bring one from feeling down to feeling upbeat in a second it something about the words Miss Mahalia Jackson sang I cannot fully explain but the song just simply lifts one's spirit to the upmost high and also let one know God is surely real and God is no joke he is the real deal and that what I think about Miss Mahalia Jackson she were the real deal and she wasn't a fake either in my opinion.
