Mahalia Jackson live in Chicago a favorite of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Mahalia sang this at the march on washington just before King gave the I have a dream speech
Like someone said... those handclaps were when the Holy Ghost was coming on her. You can feel it! They had power. No riffing and over done hairdos with bling and low cut blouses. No praise team behind her with blue jeans and coordinated shirts and blouses... Just the voice that God gave her. Piano player playing to accompany her. Nothing orchestrated. People appreciating that an angel is singing. Not needing all the theatrics. This is how I have patterned my gift of music. Thank God for my mother encouraging me to just sing for the Lord and nobody else. Thank you Mahalia.
Whoever reading this, God never sends you into a situation alone, God goes before you, He stands beside you, He walks behind you. Whatever situation you have right now be confident. God is with you. Amen 🙏🙏❤❤
Over and over again! Am I the only one who turns away from imitators? They may imitate her voice but they can't touch her genuine passion. The difference in genuine black gospel music is that it is sang from the heart and soul. Performance is not a concern. It's all about the message. You can sit in the poorest of black churches, some still wooden and perched on concrete blocks and listen to the old folks who never went to school pat their feet to the beat and rock the church! Today's Kirk Franklins and Hawkins and nobody else can touch'em. As the old saying goes, they've been immitated but never duplicated. Let the old school church say Amen.

I was watching a mother play with her son on tik tok one day I cried and screamed to God "God please give me a child!!!!!" that same day something in me told me to take a pregnancy test... it came back positive! I couldnt believe it I was in tears and in shock!I took more pregnancy tests and they all came back positive! A week after I found out I was pregnant I found a cross necklace a few steps away from where I worked at and I then knew it was really God all along and never left my side. I now have a 11 month healthy beautiful baby boy. He's turning 1 in a few days! God is good!

God is good and his presence is EVERYWHERE, and Mrs Jackson was truly given a gift with her voice, and WE are all blessed to see/hear a masterpiece like this!!!!!!!!!👍👍👍👍

praise jesus for helping my forefathers over the red sea praise jesus he will do the same thing for us don't worry so called black and african he will deliver us again on his time not ours as it is written Are ye not as children of the Ethiopians unto me, O children of Israel? saith the LORD. Have not I brought up Israel out of the land of Egypt? and the Philistines from Caphtor, and the Syrians from Kir? as it is written 13 And it came to pass, when I prophesied, that Pelatiah the son of Benaiah died. Then fell I down upon my face, and cried with a loud voice, and said, Ah Lord GOD! wilt thou make a full end of the remnant of Israel? 14Again the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, 15Son of man, thy brethren, even thy brethren, the men of thy kindred, and all the house of Israel wholly, are they unto whom the inhabitants of Jerusalem have said, Get you far from the LORD: unto us is this land given in possession. 16Therefore say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Although I have cast them far off among the heathen, and although I have scattered them among the countries, yet will I be to them as a little sanctuary in the countries where they shall come. 17Therefore say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; I will even gather you from the people, and assemble you out of the countries where ye have been scattered, and I will give you the land of Israel. 18And they shall come thither, and they shall take away all the detestable things thereof and all the abominations thereof from thence. 19And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh: as it is written 2 When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee. 3 For I am the LORD thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour: I gave Egypt for thy ransom, Ethiopia and Seba for thee. 4 Since thou wast precious in my sight, thou hast been honourable, and I have loved thee: therefore will I give men for thee, and people for thy life. 5 Fear not: for I am with thee: I will bring thy seed from the east, and gather thee from the west; 6 I will say to the north, Give up; and to the south, Keep not back: bring my sons from far, and my daughters from the ends of the earth; 7 Even every one that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him. 8 Bring forth the blind people that have eyes, and the deaf that have ears. as it is written For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. 25 Behold, I have told you before. 26 Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not. 27 For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. 28 For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together. 29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: 30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. like i said before on his time not ours
And she's the one who said to him "Tell them about your dream Martin" as he talked. He then veered from his prepared remarks to give one of the greatest speeches ever. A woman behind the man.
Not talent Gift from God You African Americans only believe in talents in vocal ability This woman was a treasure from God who was spreading the gospel with her God given gift. We as Christians have gifts not talents. Talent is for secular artists.
@camp Rich "You African Americans..." immediately tells me where you are. Generalizing any group of people is racist and you seem to fit nicely. You should be better than that!!!! We, as a group, don't think in a monolithic fashion except when it comes to our natural rights as humans and, since I'm an American, as American citizens.
This was one of the first gospel videos I ever saw on youtube. 16 years later and it's as powerful as the first time I saw it. I love how it slowly rises in intensity as Mahalia and that woman in the audience have a little friendly tug-of-war back and forth. Mahalia asserts herself, drowns out and eventually overwhelms the lady. Not even tape warble can hold back the power of this perfect performance.
I have heard it say that there is a difference between religion and relationship. Religion is a set rules that no one can live up to everyday. Relationship...... Now that is different. It is talking and walking with God. Getting to know him. Mahalia Jackson knew God. No one sing like that and not know him. Just my opinion.
I just came across this lady by chance on RUclips. I had never heard of her. I don't have the words to describe how her singing is effecting me. I'm somewhat familiar with the great jazz, blues, and soul singers - gospel, not so much. It's kind of silly of me posting this comment, because obviously you've heard her sing - you understand! I am moved to tears. Oh, and by the way, I'm an old white man. Her singing touches the divine. To me, it goes beyond all the worldly strife and division that is tearing us apart. If more people could be moved by her singing the way it has moved me - we could be healed.
Same here. I saw a friend post her friend singing "Take my Hand Lord" on her whatsapp status and I went searching to find that song on RUclips and came across Lady Mahalia singing that song. Then, I found a clip of her singing this song (How I got over) at Sir MLK's rally. I looked up her name and it means "teanderness" and "affection". I believe this will be the middle name of our daughter when she is born hopefully this year 2021. Jahnaya Mahalia (God's grace is tenderness and affection). Help us pray that God will grant us our Jahnaya Mahalia
I was in broadcasting for 30 plus years. My first "gig" was for a radio station in Rawlins, Wyoming. At that time, it was the only radio station in a 100 mile radius. On Sunday mornings I was the "jock" on air - responsible for making sure that we played nothing but spirtual music for around 90 minutes. No talk, just spiritual music - and of course, commercials for 90 rather slow - forgive me Father - rather boring minutes. With knowledge mostly of the Beatles, Stones and the "British invasion" only, it was a challenge to find something that wouldn't put folks back to sleep. But then I discovered a couple of Mahalia Jackson vinyls. From that point on the Sunday morning broadcasts, that I spun records for. always had something from the other worldly Ms M. Sunday morning radio in Rawlins, Wyoming was never boring again.
This singing comes from a relationship built on prayer n spiritual living...living 4 God n not the devil...Real Christian, Sing from a heart that real ...That's real ANOINTING, dedicated to God...🌹🌹🌷🌷🌸💐💐🎆🎆🎊🎊🎉🎇🔥🔥🔥

Yes shes gone, but her music and inspiration lives on....HOW I GOT OVER.... Rebecca Mwafulirwa has this ladies inspiration indeed... One day we gonna surely sing around God's altar together
joe ferguson my goodness the great Mildred Falls is tearing that piano up , when it gets good like this it must be God holding them both from just going holy ghost crazy and just running and just leaving the piano, Ms.Falls piano playing is complimenting the heck out of Ms. Jackson's vocals I remember seeing this as a little child and it moved then & it still moves now after all this time. I remember as a little kid we would hear Ms. Jackson singing early on Sunday morning without the music with her window up just tear up the place singing her songs , singing so forcefully it would bring me to tears I would just stand there In total awe of what I was hearing ,coming from a human being I was so taken by this lady singing , and she would see me & wave at me then I would go on to the corner candy store.
Wow Brian! What a blessed and treasured experience you’ve had to live near and hear in person the great Mahalia Jackson singing through her house window! Man!
When I passed out at work and with a fracture my skull and bleeding on the brain and a stroke this song how i got over came to mind for some reasons. It goes to show I don't care if one is a sinner or not God always got his children back through anything. Again, it cause me to think how am I going to make it through my health issue. To me listening to Miss Mahalia Jackson song How I Got I Over on you tube over and over again to me the song just bring one from feeling down to feeling upbeat in a second it something about the words Miss Mahalia Jackson sang I cannot fully explain but the song just simply lifts one's spirit to the upmost high and also let one know God is surely real and God is no joke he is the real deal and that what I think about Miss Mahalia Jackson she were the real deal and she wasn't a fake either in my opinion.

I'm a Muslim and cook, and I play this song before i start ANYTHING, everyday is smooth as glass with the first M.J. Lacing my kitchen with this song. God is good and his presence is EVERYWHERE, and Mrs Jackson was truly given a gift with her voice, and WE are all blessed to see/hear a masterpiece like this!!!!!!!!!👍👍👍👍
Amen brother

the way she’s walking down that song is something too behold
Listen to that pianist!!!
+Dawn Jones her name is Mildred Falls.
+percy thrillington she was a famous jazz pianist famous in her own right
Diane Ruhl
yes, she was great.
My Lord, My Lord! Nothing like it! Skill and anointing!
Black Obsidian , Mildred Falls was one of greatest pianist that ever played! Sadly she passed away in 1973 a year after Mahalia
All by herself! No mixing, no back up singers, no choir! The power in that voice will never bee matched! You can feel her singing!
That piano player is unassumingly BA. Though. I know what you mean though sorry for being G@y lol
My sister used to play this song like everyday and it was also her ring tone. I used to get upset because i wasn't saved. I'm here singing along to the song thanking my God for salvation. I'm saved
They don't sing like this anymore, I have to watch this often. Her voice was one of a kind!!
Makes me cry like a baby. One of my grandma favorites, soul touching

Hector Sanchez God Bless You......YOU DISCOVERED A JEWEL!!!!
Amen☝🏽🙏🏽
Lord! She could sing!
This is the gospel we grew up with. My mother would walk around the house singing how we got over. It was her faith as a single parent that got us over.
Clara Ward wrote this as an upbeat song but Mahalia claimed this song when she slowed it down....one of the best remakes ever made.
I love Clara's version, but Mahalia is the queen of gospel.
Actually Rev William Herbert Brewster Sr wrote this song and Clara Slapped her name on it.
Mother Jackson sped it up once at The Lincoln Memorial for Dr King’s, “I Have A Dream” speech.
praise jesus for helping my forefathers over the red sea
praise jesus he will do the same thing for us
don't worry so called black and african he will deliver us again
on his time not ours
as it is written
Are ye not as children of the Ethiopians unto me, O children of Israel? saith the LORD. Have not I brought up Israel out of the land of Egypt? and the Philistines from Caphtor, and the Syrians from Kir?
as it is written
13
And it came to pass, when I prophesied, that Pelatiah the son of Benaiah died. Then fell I down upon my face, and cried with a loud voice, and said, Ah Lord GOD! wilt thou make a full end of the remnant of Israel?
14Again the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
15Son of man, thy brethren, even thy brethren, the men of thy kindred, and all the house of Israel wholly, are they unto whom the inhabitants of Jerusalem have said, Get you far from the LORD: unto us is this land given in possession.
19And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh:
as it is written
2 When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.
5 Fear not: for I am with thee: I will bring thy seed from the east, and gather thee from the west;
6 I will say to the north, Give up; and to the south, Keep not back: bring my sons from far, and my daughters from the ends of the earth;
7 Even every one that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him.
8 Bring forth the blind people that have eyes, and the deaf that have ears.
as it is written
For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.
29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:
30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
Yes, I remember that she was the one who urged him into that I Have a Dream speech. Two anointed dynamos on one stage. Wow!
Wow. Spirit led.
You can feel her spirit & strength in all her singing. praise God for her talents
Not talent
Gift from God
You African Americans only believe in talents in vocal ability
This woman was a treasure from God who was spreading the gospel with her God given gift.
We as Christians have gifts not talents.
Talent is for secular artists.
@@camprich6768 ...lol i mean if u wanna get technical
@camp Rich
"You African Americans..." immediately tells me where you are. Generalizing any group of people is racist and you seem to fit nicely. You should be better than that!!!!
We, as a group, don't think in a monolithic fashion except when it comes to our natural rights as humans and, since I'm an American, as American citizens.
That’s my Miss Mahalia Jackson, it is such a Blessing just listening to her Praise our God, thank you Mahalia, Gone but never forgotten!
Hello Mary
How are you doing today?
As 2023 is about to end I've been listening 5 or more times daily...I hope it is a sign of transformation as I will be 60 in April
That gave me chills and brought tears to my eyes
Me too!
Taylor downing, I've got the chills and tears also along with the shouting and my own praise break.
Same here Taylor!
Yaaaay God! Soul stirring!!
Taylor Downing me too
She caught the spirit....and so did the crowd. You just couldn't help but being drawn in. Powerful singing....from the soul.
This is not of this world it’s pure divine 🙏🏻
This was one of the first gospel videos I ever saw on youtube. 16 years later and it's as powerful as the first time I saw it. I love how it slowly rises in intensity as Mahalia and that woman in the audience have a little friendly tug-of-war back and forth. Mahalia asserts herself, drowns out and eventually overwhelms the lady. Not even tape warble can hold back the power of this perfect performance.
Today is my 50th birthday 🙏 Thank you God 🙏🙏🙏
Happy Birthday 🎂🎉🎈🎊🎁
More blessings on you
"I feel like shouting, I feel like SHOUTING!!!"
This woman was truly a woman of God, The world was Blessed by this Legend!
There isn't a religious bone in my body but I LLLLOOVVEEE her music. What a great gospel singer!!
I have heard it say that there is a difference between religion and relationship. Religion is a set rules that no one can live up to everyday. Relationship...... Now that is different. It is talking and walking with God. Getting to know him. Mahalia Jackson knew God. No one sing like that and not know him. Just my opinion.
JESUS fought religion! HALLELUJAH! 🙏🙌
❤❤❤
Amen. Thank you.
Amen 🙏💯💓
@@popsannfrancis8665 Jahnaya Mahalia, what a beautiful name. May she be blessed of Yahweh Elohim, God Almighty.
How many of us look back and wonder just how we made it over?
My soul looks back IN wonder how I got over.
when Black Folks do gospel you can feel the spirit
There were lots of great Gospel groups back then- Sis Rosetta Tharpe, Dixie Hummingbirds, the Sour Stirrers, and Golden Gate Quartet to name a few.

The great mildred Falls on piano
Amazing! Just anointed!
joe ferguson my goodness the great Mildred Falls is tearing that piano up , when it gets good like this it must be God holding them both from just going holy ghost crazy and just running and just leaving the piano, Ms.Falls piano playing is complimenting the heck out of Ms.
Man!
@Brian Woods
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The power in her voice makes me so excited to see what praise and worship will be like in Heaven!
