My sweet late Mother dearly loved Sis Mahalia and played her recordings in our home back in the day repeatedly! Yes, she played others, but Sis Mahalia was her favorite! I am still watching and listening to Mahalia!!!!! (she still has some Bessie Smith in her!) I love this. Her "timing" and vocal delivery!! Her true gospel singing is from the SOUL. Those runs that ONLY she could! That FULL OUT sangin!
My father used to sit in his big recliner and listen to this great singer.He died 1979 I was in the USMC and had to fly home from California for the funeral. My Stepmother had these songs playing on the HiFi. I miss him so much.
Man I tell you I'm 21 years old and I listen to what I call great music as far as jazz, R&B, Soul, Gospel, Country even classical and I tell you she's the greatest AND she only sang one genre of music (Gospel) and she's my favorite singer then there's everyone else no questions Asked!

Mahalia had an anointing in her singing and one can experience that anointing still today just listening to her. She is a blessing. She sang as unto the Lord, her love for the Lord is obvious.

I'm pretty young, meaning I was born as she was dying, but looking at these concerts, it seems like may have been the 1st or one of the 1st to bring black gospel to a white audience and make it popular without it being altered. Sure she may have sung songs that a white audience could appreciate easier, but she was still unapologetically her. As a singer to mostly white audiences, I am grateful.
God's music in and through His so loved Mahalia, as in Fats Domino, did more to break the color barrier between blacks and whites than any other thing on the planet ever could. That's it. That's all!
She was the most noted; however, the traveling gospel shows were well received, by all audiences. Granted TV and the Ed Sullivan Show has earned a high seat, in the History of Gospel Music of Black folks.

God gave Mihalia to us for a short time so we could know what is meant by "angelic choirs". She was needed back as the primary soloist.
