    a lot of people say 'tron looked good... for it's time' which kinda bothers me. tron looks good, period. a good special effect is not just about cutting edge technology, but about beauty and design. the tech can evolve and 'inprove', but if an fx it's well designed and aesthetically pleasing, it will never look outdated. this film is as beautifull today as it was back in 1982.

      Hence why I often love cartoony looking ed video games more than realistic looking ones regardless of when they were made. The most low poly cartoony graphics on a playstation or n64 can still look good from an aesthetic perspective. A lot of it has to do with color choices, camera angles, all that sort of stuff from film making. Same goes with movies. While you can sometimes see how low resolution the textures in the first Toy Story are, it still looks good, especially the lighting. One of my favorite parts of that movie's look is just how warm the scenes look during sunset as well as the character designs. I think I'll stop here because I could go on about this all day lol.

    TRON was spellbinding to me as a young teen seeing it inside the movie theatre. I sat there absolutely hypnotized by it and when it ended I was literally unable to move and so I just sat there and waited for it to start again. I have never forgotten that and it is by far my most favorite film of all time. When I turned 18 I left Texas for Hollywood with my own vector drawings of ideas inspired by TRON and a dream of working at Ables and Associates. I had spoken on the phone numerous times to them as well as Magi in New York and was sure I understood what was needed to get hired as a computer graphics artist. I had even contacted Steven Lisberger's office and was going to show up there as well. Long story short, it was an adventure with a girlfriend that ended up becoming more of a comical farce with us trying to navigate Hollywood and find an apartment and temporary jobs. We were very naive and ended up running out of money and returning home before I ever made it to the doorsteps of anyone who worked on TRON, but I was a dreamer and the intention was certainly there... we just had no idea of how hard it would be to set ourselves up in Hollywood and we didn't have enough cash to see it through. I'll never forget that adventure and how much this film influenced me as a young man. It's a brilliant piece of art. Thank you for posting this for others to see. I love this film so much :-)

      you aren't alone. many of us went through the same things. couldnt just sen out an email with a link to your reel. had to sit there and make each one, one after the other for an entire day. go to siggrapph and see them toss your VHS on top of the pile.even on the later days when the industry started breaking up in California for the tax breaks. some people even got caught up in the DD studio in Florida and packed up their lives and hit the road, just to get a call halfway there that the studio shut down. there goes your moving expenses and your future. then make the decision to work in Vancouver or keep traveling all over the world on contracts. Then dipping my toes in the commercial scene and it rocks your soul. crushing deadlines, extreme pressure and surprises around every corner (as in 'we lost the client, youre fired'). hope you settled into something though.

    One of my favourite visual aspects of the original Tron digital world - and it's something many digital worlds did back in the 80s - was to have the 'sky' look permanently like the kind you see at dusk on a clear summer evening. Mostly dark, with that subtle glowing line at the horizon. I just thought that always looked SO magical and wonderful.

      @MadameSomnambule 10 месяцев назад +2

      That's something I often noticed in tech-centered imagery and computer graphics alike that were made in the 80s. If it wasn't a clear dark blue sky, it was a star field, like you're in a digital version of outer space. I imagine there was a lot of inspiration from the space race era from the 50s and 60s involved in all that, especially if the designer grew up in those eras. The futuristic = outer space theme was still kinda there in those days from the looks of it. And yeah, there is a very magical feel to those kinds of aesthetics from the 80s.

    I love Tron when i was a small kid. Was just so impressed with the visuals. Now who would of thought that I'm now a VFX artist myself haha. I can tell you this much, i'm much more impressed with how they achieved the visual effects shots with the technology they had back then than now. Now i'm pretty sure the execution is fast and even more pretty VFX. But back then, it was quite a struggle but they managed to create some awesome stuff and did the best they could and it's still a beautiful film to me. It was inspiring and It was super under appreciated back then. I think the new generation now will dig this movie or at least more understanding of the plot more because the terminologies of the computers is much more known now in us then the general people back in the 80s.
    And I'm still mad that Academy Awards that year disqualified the film in the visual effects category because to them, using computers for films back then was considered as 'cheating'. It was just ahead of its time that no one could fully grasp what the technical achivements it was doing at the time.

    In today's world of films where every shot has CGI and people just take special effects for granted, it's hard to look back and really see how brilliant this movie was for its time. They invented rendering techniques that are still used today, and spent hours and hours rendering single frames that could be churned out by today's computers in seconds or less. Given what they had to work with at the time, the resulting film that Tron became is an absolute marvel. These guys all deserve huge kudos for pulling it off so brilliantly.

    Computer simulation, three-space -- fun to see the lack of standardized terminology. "Simulation" is used far more frequently than "render". Also amazed that the motion trajectories were not computed at keypoints and interpolated in between with a simplified schematic view of the trajectory (e.g., 2D top-down and side views, or even a basic 3D wireframe with cubes as stand-ins for objects). I would imagine that even back then, this would have been simple to produce and worth the time-cost trade-off to implement on an 8-bit PC.

That statement was a true statement of the golden era, now money is thrown at "the best solution" instead of each company having their unique "hot rod" that set them apart from the rest. I really hope one day media starts to steer back toward that direction

    I loved this movie as a child (and still do), and to this day still know the exact moment I'd have to get up and flip the video disk (CED) to side two any time I watched it. I'm so used to it that it's weird to not have that break in it when going back to it now. (it's not all that long after breaking out of the light-cycle arena during the escape, when all three come to the sudden stop just before the 'cliffs' edge)
    Looking back on it now with a better understanding of the limits of rendering at the time, I feel "pushing the technology to it's limits" is an understatement.

    I was 12 when I saw Tron in the theater. I was confused through much of the movie. I wanted to like it because I loved video games and it was hyped so much on tv. But the story was too complicated for me. There was a disconnect between the medium of film, and the overwhelming amount of CGI that the actors and the script couldn't overcome. I appreciate what they tried to do and what they accomplished though. It's worth revisiting for a bit when it comes on tv.

      Bill Schlafly I was 13 when Tron came out and it was my first experience with “the book was better.” It was the first time I had ever read a novel based on a film. And throughout watching it for the first time, I kept thinking “but they left out the part where...”. The movie felt like it was rushing the story in parts and I was glad to have understood the plot better having read the book. Still enjoyed the movie, but could have been lost too, without the background. Same thing happened more recently with The Martian.

    When I listen to what they say, back then as much as now people don't grasp the possibilities of parallel computing. Your graphics card is a computer. Even if it doesn't have a 3D engine of its own, you can load one on there. Your network card can also is a computer. It can run your Internet server without issuing any delay when you do other stuff with the rest of your computer.
    People teaching computer science have no idea of what their computers can do and with the lack of proper scheduling algorythms, instead making use of semi-random intercutting between programs, even make sure you can't read out your device manuals that are actually on your devices. It's stupid.
    For video-games the programmers get that it needs to be realtime 3D rendering, but artists have to be patient, as if it's okay to make you wait for half an hour before your stroke materializes on your canvas. It's just stupid.

    Ten minutes to render a frame! Based on what I read about this one cg artist (can't remember the name, but the same one who made the album cover for Rockit by Herbie Hancock) and how long it took for 3D imagery to render on the mainframes he used in the 70s, I figured it'd take a long time to animate the graphics from TRON as you had to photograph each frame, animating computer imagery like you would with cels in a sense. From 45 minutes to an hour in the 70s to 10 minutes in the early 80s in a time from shortly before real time cg animation was possible. Pretty amazing stuff here. Watched TRON several years ago, and I loved it. The atmosphere, the music, everything! So it's real nice to see a behind the scenes look at it. ^_^
