    How dreadful those glass monstrous structures that have been allowed to be erected in London which should have listed building status for whole of inner London.

      But they probably kept the shoes and clothing clean and so did their job.

      Only used for walking short distances over the top of a soft,leather shoe,similar to what was called (around 100 years ago) a 'house' shoe.
      For longer distances everyone wore boots, with a thick leather sole.
      Or, if very young,elderly or infirm,were carried by relatives,servants or in a cart. Even possibly paners on a horse/donkey/ass.
