  • 03-22-2024 I was very lucky I caught this "RARE" MD Helicopters MD600N.
    The MD 600N is a stretched version of the icon MD/Hughes 500. Has a 6-blade main rotor system & is powered by a Rolls-Royce turbine jet engine and a helicopter with no tail rotor. Thank You for Watching & Please Subscribe.
    The NOTAR (NO TAil Rotor) system is a helicopter technology that provides directional control using the Coandă effect1234. The system employs a variable pitch fan within the tail boom to draw air in and expel it through two primary outlets: the direct jet thruster and the Coandă slots2. A large fan at the rear of the fuselage blows spent air from the main rotor down the tail boom. Slots along the side of the tail boom and at the end of the boom allow this air to escape, creating a sideways force that counteracts the main rotor's torque3.
    The MD Helicopters MD 600N is a light utility civilian helicopter designed in the United States. It is a stretched eight-seat development of the five-seat MD 520N helicopter.
    McDonnell Douglas Helicopter Systems (MD Helicopters since 1999) first announced it was developing a stretched MD 520N in late 1994, at that time designated the MD 630N. The prototype, a modified MD 530F, had made its first flight on November 22, 1994. McDonnell Douglas gave the go-ahead for the production aircraft, redesignated the MD 600N, in March 1995.

    Extremely lucky to have one of these flying regularly in my area. It is an amazing sight to behold, so much bigger than a base 369, and the sound! Nothing else mankind or nature has ever devised sounds like the 600. It is an unforgettable experience. There are only about a dozen registered in the US. HIGHLY recommend seeing one if you have the chance.

      @@EdWhisenantAviation There are only about a dozen registered in the US, but I only see about half that many regularly in use. One N-number is in the UK and seems to get regular use. MD will build anyone a brand new one. Minimum order is three, I believe. What is that, about $10 million or so? If I had the money, hell yes.

    Nice one again Ed, thank you! I heard an interview with the new boss of MD helicopters and was surprised to hear him say that the MD notar models were not as good as expected, and are discontinued. For now MD helicopters restricts itself to the models with the conventional tail rotor.

    • @EdWhisenantAviation
      @EdWhisenantAviation  11 дней назад +2

      I have heard a lot of great things from pilots over the years who have flown or still fly them, I think what the issue is on the down time for maintenance and getting the parts, and cost is just to overwhelming so the conventional tail rotor has worked all these years so if it's not broke don't fix it rule. I've flown in several MD520N's and one MD600N and they are incredible machines. They will be missed when they are all gone 😢😢

      @LatitudeSky День назад +1

      I know I heard someone from MD say they would build new 600Ns and possibly the Explorer as long as the buyer wanted a minimum order of three. That's not too steep, if true.
