This would've been great if you had headset audio!
Yes we need headset audio
Also if they had a door gunner with a mini gun.
Yes!! Take another ride and add the headset audio. There are few videos out there with police helicopters, and this just rocks!
@@GeorgeCostanza_ the mini gunner would be awesome !
lol love the star wars Rebel sticker on the helmet
when I was a teenager I was in the LAPD Explorers and we got a chance to go wash and wax the LAPD choppers and go on a fly along. It was fun until We all started getting a bit nauseous from all the tight turns, but it was amazing and I still treasure that experiance to this day.
This seems like really cool job to fly around LA and LB all day that low and this also shows the scope of how large widespread LA truly is. Thanks for posting
I agree
Man the new GTA V mod is v impressive. Almost looks real

From the days of the tv show Adam-12 till now, the airship program has been a success, not only in L.A., but all over the country.
The LAPD Helicopter Division is stationed on the roof of C. Erwin Piper Technical Center. The police heliport was brand new back in 1983, when the movie Blue Thunder was shot.
It´s an old movie but a great one. In preparation for the 1984 L.A. Olympics, the LAPD receives an experimental new helicopter with a lot of
high tech gadgets and weapons (for that time) built in. Near the end of the movie are fantastic helicopter Vs. helicopter chase/combat scenes.
I was born and raised in LA and although I don’t live there anymore I don’t hate the place like a lot of people do. My one wish before I go to the other side is to take a a flight on a LAPD copter around the west side of LA and/or ride with the mounted unit down Wilshire Blvd 😀
Nothing like a spectacular view of L.A., particularly the Downtown area.
Reminds me of Blue Thunder! :)
Great footage! Thanks for uploading!
Thank you! Stay tuned (subscribe) for more aviation videos!
I was thinking the same thing, JAFO. 😊
Astro Division!
Good old Roy Scheider and Malcolm McDowell.
Better count down 25 seconds on my watch to check my sanity
Love the Rebels sticker
This has got to be one of the ultimate jobs... Keep up the great work Blue.
It can’t be as good as beating up people on the street for no reason at all. Keep up the good work blue.
It IS the best job! Speaking from experience. 😉
@@mr.wilson8340 you mean like this Mr. Wilson??? I don't think that's great at all... ruclips.net/video/H0KWPqUBGUQ/видео.html&ab_channel=EyewitnessNewsABC7NY

I was a TFO for the Fresno Police Aviation Unit for 12 years. Best job in the department I ever had.
I can imagine
Air ships are the best..
I have had the opportunity to do a ride along up in the helicopter.
On our shift we observed the suspect hiding at the end of the building, he had a knife. We observed many suspects and was able to relay to ground units making it safer for the officers responding!!
Thank you for the eyes in the sky
Sounding like a true wanna be cop.
When I was a kid in the late 70’s my family lived in LA. I remember one night hearing a helicopter hovering above our house so my brother and I went outside to see what was going on. It turned out to be an LAPD helicopter. They shined the night sun spotlight on us and then yelled on the PA to get back in the house. The only time in my life I’ve ever been yelled at by a helicopter lol
Lol!
God bless you for your great work and air support and thanks for sharing this flight moment ❤
The view from inside the Ghetto bird is always more impressive.
Excellent name.
They should number them like that, "This is ghetto bird 1 flying over sector 3 all is clear over"
Blue Thunder (Roy Schneider)1980s movie 😸👌
Aaaaa man that would be a life dream to be on board thanks for everything you helo people do for us down here.
Aww man! Thank you for taking us along!!! I LOVE to fly and this video is so much fun! Let's get the bad guy and thank you for watching out for us!
Great 👍 video to all the Women and Men of Law Enforcement thank you for your service! 🙏🇺🇸
Nice video, that was a view I had when I was an Air Medic in the Southern California area Loved hearing the aircraft spooling up.
does the department know how much of our tax money goes towards refueling one of these?
@@Belchmaster41 Yes it is called a budget and each operational division has one as well as a general budget for the entire department. What is your point?
She's a Rebel! 🤟
Nice to see things from the Ghetto Bird's perspective 🚁
Dumb question!! On the left side of the helicopter cockpit, it looks like binoculars. Is that what they are? That Hollywood pass is incredible!
Dream of the day I could do a fly along like that. Is the hard turns out wrenching? The talent of the pilots of these helicopters is amazing. I love watching them.
They are “stabilized” binos. You push a button and the internal gyro stabilizes the image you’re looking at. Made by Canon.
Utmost respect for law enforcement!! As a long time pilot; rotor & fixed wing, this brings back years of memories flying in the LA Basin.
Also reminds me of all the noise complaints from citizens from the "news helicopters". It's not the news, or VIP, or tour helicopters making the noise... It's the daily (and nightly) low-level flight operations as highlighted here that create the continuous noise problems. As an ex-military pilot and pilot that flew in the LA Basin for over 30 years I still ask myself the question, "Is there really a need to fly at 200 to 500 agl to conduct these operations?
Uhhh, yes! No matter what camera system or moving map we have in those aircraft, nothing beat working a call at 300’ agl, with eyes outside. Nothing. We catch more badguys that way than flying at 1000’ looking at a stupid camera and with our head ps “inside” all the time. …It’s how we roll.
the rebel logo on his helmet is SICK
Great footage that officer Jim reed and Pete malloy..
LAPD regularly flies over my place rattling all my windows. It's nice to know that at least someone up there is enjoying the view...despite the choatic noise it creates for me. Haha. Great sweeping shots of LA. 👏
Way back, I remember calling it the ASTRO division.
Air Support To Regular Operations
Looks like that is where they filmed Blue Thunder.
@@greyhound-t3k They DID use that location ("Hooper Heliport") in the film, "Blue Thunder".
Ahhhhhhhh reminds me of good ole San Andreas... you know with Franklin,Mikey and we can't forget Trevor... LOL...
This is a perspective not many get to see. A view from high in the sky. Man (or woman), I would love that executive suite. Stay safe everyone. Great vid.
Always love seeing these ride-alongs. This particular ship is now in Chicago, serving as WLS-TV’s “Chopper 7” with registration N871AD… wonder if someone will post a ride-along from its new mission.
A siren on a helicopter.... what a time to be alive
I like the Star Wars Rebel insignia on the back of the copilot's helmet!
Hello Airfighter videos,
Thank you for this video! LAPD ASD please be safe and Thank you for your service!
Hope you, Airfighter Videos, your families, friends, fans are having a wonderful New Year!!
Take care, be safe, and peace out!!
Thank you! You too!
Love the star wars helmet logo 👌😸
flying helicopters are very different from fixed wing aircraft. Your feet and hands are always on the controls and you become one with the machine. one hand on the cyclic, the other hand on the collective and both feet on the anti torque pedals.
In the ASTAR, you can keep your feet flat on the floor flying all day, including landing without using the pedals. (Run-on landing with a tail rotor control failure or tail rotor drive failure, as the ASTAR RFM calls it). It’s really a non event once you know how to do it and practice it almost daily)😉
@@colt10mmsecurity68 these must be modern helicopters. Do you know if helicopters have auto-pilot features ?
@@spankyharland9845 LAPD does not. LA Sheriff ASTARS do with about half of their fleet at the moment. They’re converting over for instrument training of all the pilots.
@@colt10mmsecurity68 yes, because of the ever changing flight characteristics of a helicopter, they only have auto-hover in some helicopters, but no auto pilot.
@@spankyharland9845 No, not exactly. We have Garmin full 3-axis autopilot for helicopters! The system you’re talking about was “Helisas,” made by companies like Genesys (formally “Chelton”). Garmin has developed a full autopilot (GFC 600H, Google it) for certain helicopters and the ASTAR is one of them, I fly and instruct with them in ASTARS for a living. You can load up an instrument approach and the autopilot will fly the helicopter down to minimums. You can set it up to orbit over a location and go hands free. Garmin also has a “leveling” feature that in the event one goes inadvertent IMC, a push of the button and the helicopter will right itself and fly straight/level in the clouds and without the use of hands or feet on the cyclic or pedals. The only control that at this time is NOT controlled by the autopilot is the collective. However, Garmin will be coming out with that next, within a couple of years. They are working on that as we speak.
I loved the video & just found your channel. Great pilot & co pilot.
Cool video..San Pedro with Saint Thomas Bridge & USS Iowa..
so amazing, never been in a helo. that would be so kewl to do. seeing Cali from that view was awesome
The model name of this helicopter - Écureuil - is one of the hardest French words to pronounce correctly! lol.
That's why we just call it "A-Star".
*Very cool. Thank you for sharing this.*
FASCINATING!! Great tour with some action!
What was the siren for? 🚨
Yeah what was the siren for cause it is loud for those who wanna ride in LAPD Helicopter
I used to live and fly in Los Angeles, watching this video brings back me good memories, One thing that I used to hate was the terrible traffic. Good video, but if you can stabilize the image would great. Greetings to Ya'll from North Carolina.
This footage is at least 10 years old as evidenced by many features seen on the ground. In particular at the Port of Los Angeles.
You could have know if you had read the description of this video. 🙂
Man I thought they stopped doing airship ride alongs!! I went up with them in 2017 and had a blast. We had a 211 where a lady armed with a knife robbed a chinese restaurant and then hid in a parking garage across the street for half an hour haha. They showed me dicaprios mansion as well. Cool group of dudes!
That’s great fuel time… wow… definitely a great watch… also difficult job to do… kudos
Multiple shootouts in one mission? Man LA is a dangerous place😂
I tried to get a ride along with SSD aviation, but they don't do ride along any longer. Lost a few deputies in an accident a few years back and the liability was too great to let civilians go up. Instead, I went out with a K9 unit!
Sweet.. more lost deputies plz🙏🏾

What a cool way to keep your head-on-a-swivel. 🚁
most nurses should know it's NEVER a good idea to load the patient head-first unless the Tail rotor is protected by a cover.
I’d like to see them behind another helicopter with the siren on trying to get them to land. 😂
Nice. Cheers from Brazil. Btw I live next to a local police department that operates the as350.
Thank you!
Super awesome video...thx for sharing..
ASD! Best Division I worked at!👍🏻
Thanks for the Griffith Park Observatory flyover.....I grew up in Glendale.
I'm sorry..🙄
Why sorry!?
@@leechjim8023 Glendale sucks.
I’m not. It was a nice place in the 60s.
8:17 we also have to be careful of the siren cause it’s loud once your with it in the helicopter so for those who wanna ride in the LAPD Helicopter hold your ears of the siren cause it might be loud once they do it on the fly by
This is great 👍.. I'd love to go up with these guys.. 🚔👮🇱🇷
Choppers are an invaluable asset to a city like LA they are fast and can give different perspectives to those units on the ground. For anyone who has never flown in one They are very noisy and vibrate a lot so not ideal camera or gun platforms. Most of my flying was done during cold war exercises in West Germany and operational tours of N Ireland but they are great fun but freezing when flying without doors on lol.. great vid by the way
Now I need to visit USS Iowa on my next LA trip.
FYI: I don't know who put the info up about the aircraft, but "N230LA" is not the serial number. It's the FAA Registration number (similar to a car's license number) and is commonly called the N-number for obvious reasons. The serial number is assigned by the manufacturer, the N-number by the FAA. Thanks for putting in the blurry stills. They really clarified things. Also, this is America. There's no "u" in "harbor".
BE 🙂 NICE!
I love flying helicopters more than driving a car. No gridlock, stop signs, or rude drivers.
How cool that is going the city good Job LAPD keep it up
Does anybody remember Roy Scheider's sidekick in the LAPD Cobra chopper flick, "Blue Thunder"? The younger cop was given a helmet that had the word "JAFO" painted on it. Anybody who knows the four word meaning of the letters on that helmet all these years later, kindly reply.
"Just Another F***ing Observer"
this should of been record at nigh when they use the light
I love you guys, you do a vitally needed job with a bird flying in nasty conditions. And it's really a dangerous job. The bottom 10% of my USAF class went for helos. Sleep well.
Yo! That don't sound reassuring!
Took off from the same building the T800 was crushed in by Sarah Conner in Terminator 1
This was really fantastic needs audio. Awesome.
Thanks! I enjoyed this ❤
It just me or the blue and silver lapd helicopters flying more aggressive than the black and white ones because I see one today and look like they flying 290 mph

4:06 Griffith Park Observatory in the Los Feliz neighborhood
Great video.
is this the same platform as in the movie "The Blue Thunder"????
Man, that was scary to fly that low and close to tall building with all those tight turns. i would rather be in a patrol car or foot pursuit any time.
LAPD doesnt patrol Long Beach harbor, that was actually San Pedro....
I would always be thinking the helicopter is gonna break.
The same heliport where Blue Thunder was shot!
Yes, it is.
fabulous!

I admittedly know nothing about helicopter operations, but it is normal for a helo pad to be almost surrounded by tall power lines?
Under the wings of God you will find refuge his faithfulness will be your shield around you God is with you in the Air
Damm this video is old because the intercontinental isn’t there yet
Does anyone have any insight as to how SoCal approach handles them? Obviously they'll sometimes be VFR underneath and sometimes will need a clearance into the bravo... Are they just treated like any other VFR helicopters? What if they need to immediately enter a surface area?
Blue Thunder and Star Wars rolled into one.
Are the LAPD choppers equipped with cameras?
